Loved this place! I was camping with a friend who's in a wheel chair and this place was perfect for her. The handicap site has a tent site that's built up a couple feet to make it possible for her to be slide out of her chair into the tent and back without help. The flushing bathrooms and pathways worked out well too. And the campground host was super nice! Great blend of nature and amenities needed for handicap person. Two thumbs up! read more

The hosts was very friendly and extremely helpful wich made the experience much more memorable. THANK YOU! Will definitely be returning. Would definitely recommend! There is a train near by but was not frequent nor bothersome. The river was low and slow enough the kids could walk around in it. The rocks hear are beautiful. Family had an amazing time! Not one complaint! While hosts are busy running the campground and helping all there the hosts always left a note so you knew where they would be.As well was available to help you even if they were busy. Stayed here for 2 nights in spot #2. Even though I've been pretty lucky with first-come-first-serve campgrounds, I like that Hallsted has reservations online. The site has a picnic table, bear box, a fire pit, and space for 4 tents. The potable water pump was close to our spot as well. I appreciated that the flush toilets were clean, although at one point they ran out of toilet paper, so remember to bring your own just in case. They have some hand sanitizer in the bathroom, so bring your own hand soap. I didn't check out the showers but it seemed they were still open. Bring bug spray as there is some mosquito activity in the morning and afternoon. read more

We had a great two night stay. It was very warm summer day, but the river is just a five minute walk from our site. Not deep, but good enough to cool off in. The bathroom and shower was very clean, our site was spacious and filled with trees to provide shade. There is no grafitti, nor trash anywhere- a clean site, including fire pit, table and bear box. The host, Joe, seems to be everywhere, and makes sure that our experience is a good one. There are trains, frequently, and even helicopters for a project down the river, but we didn't mind at all. it's a really peaceful spot! There is a small store up the road, in Twain, but our favorite eating spot is Gigi's, in Crescent Mills... You have to try their BBQ. read more

We camped here Aug 6-12. Beautiful campground but there was NO potable water or showers! There was no warning until you reach the campground and see the signs in the entrance message board. VERY disappointing! read more

Beautiful, clean and freshly remodeled. Very well maintained. The convenient little market/deli that is right up the road has all of the essentials. Be aware that they close at 5pm.The town of Quincy is only 15-20 minutes away, and you can find most everything there. On the far side on Quincy is a Savemor grocery store (and cheap gas station) and a Dollar General (like a small Walmart). As others have mentioned, the freight trains that go by are certainly loud. The engineers ride their brakes all the way past. Bring mosquato spray for the evenings. read more

We tent camped over Memorial Weekend 2021. The campground was clean with flushing toilets and showers. The sites larger than typical, shaded and spaced well with easy access to the feather river and a smallGeneral store 1/4 mile walking that had basics and as a bonus served food if you wanted to take a break from cooking breakfast or lunch! There was a mix of tents and rvs. Most campers had families with an easy loop for scooters and bicycles. We were pleasantly surprised. A highlight off the campground was the camp host, Manny! He was actually stationed at Spanish Creek campsite but came around in the am and pm to check in with campers and sell firewood. He was pleasant, approachable and helpful. He clearly enjoys campers and being a host. read more

I would love to give this site a better review but the trains that run right along the adjacent mountain side 6 or more times a day, all day and night really hurt the experience. Also, some of the camp sites are to close together and have little coverage. This leads to very limited privacy. One of the most surprising things was, not all camp sites have a bear locker, ours being one of them. This is an issue that can and should be addressed fairly easily. Also, the showers are the highest priced of any grounds I been to yet, 2.00 for 4 min. The good things about this campground is the ease of access, the low camper count ( witch helps negate the privacy issue), and brand new facilities. This camp ground is vary clean, no graffiti and no trash anywhere to be seen. read more

Joe is an amazing camp host & human. He welcomed my group warmly after a nearby camp host cheated me out of my group spot for a birthday celebration. I had a group coming from very far and he accommodated us and for that I am grateful. Not only did he accommodate me but he really tries his best to accommodate everyone. He even lets people set up next to his bus if necessary. What a great guy! The campsite itself offers nice shade. The river is refreshing and not very far away. You can float which is super relaxing. The bathrooms and site were very clean. The Twain store is less than 1 mile away so you are close to ice and things you may need quickly. Thank you Joe for being a gracious camp host. We loved this campground! I don't like giving good reviews for little gems I want to keep to myself, but this was truly a great experience. We stayed in spot park 17 which is close to the restrooms. The park was tucked back and close walking to the river. The campground and the restrooms were kept super clean by Manny the camp host. He was beyond friendly, welcoming and just a joy to be around. He checked in on everyone continuously and made sure there was no unnecessary riff-raff going on. Most hosts are not very friendly and mostly keep to themselves...we were extremely grateful to meet Manny and will definitely be back to visit with him again!! read more

I've camped here three times in the last two summers and I love it. The water isn't very deep, but I am from the city and being in such a quiet, serene place is so worth it to me...even with the train barreling through several times a day. When I'm there (Plumas County) I feel like I'm in a movie and I am able to reflect back to my time there throughout the rest of the year. There are tons of things to do in the area (fishing, hiking, swimming, rock-climbing, kayaking, relaxing, etc) and it feels like heaven. I caught my very first fish ever, a blue something, at a lake that's located about 30 miles away (Round Valley Lake). The campground itself is average. There are no showers, and a community, co-ed bathroom with 2 stalls and 2 sinks. I went twice in this last summer of 2010, once in July and again in August. The difference was that it was hotter and crowded in July, and cooler in August. Also, there was the addition of food lockers and several noticeable bear droppings later that summer. read more

The good: The location is beautiful. There are large bear boxes, clean bathrooms, and easy access to drinking water. Our sites (7 & 8) were very close to the river access where we lounged in the water in the afternoons to cool off on hot summer days. The store is a short drive and provides access to ice, food, and sundries. Also, it's close to Indian Falls which is also a great place to spend the day. Go in the morning before the crowds so you can claim a spot in the shade for your stuff. The pests: We had lots of flies and yellow jackets. Fortunately, we brought traps and that helped, but site #7 had a yellow jacket nest in the ground near the bear box! The trains: Freight trains come by several times a day and during the night. These are not the nice rumble and soft hoot, these are trains screeching while they break along curved mountain roads. The northbound are much louder. Our solution: When we were chatting around camp and a train came by, we started a story. Everyone took turns adding a few words to build a story and distract us from the annoying train noise. Too bad this wasn't an option in the middle of the night. We won't return to Hallsted. read more

Went up to Quincy for my brothers birthday I went to four different campsites before stopping at Hallsted and let me tell you none of them were as clean or as nice as Hallstead is when I first got there I asked the host (joe) if he had any available spots for us and there was two open he let me pick which one I wanted. We got settled down got all our gear out and started relaxing, there was a lot of shade on all the campsites and they mostly have a blacktop ground so there's not a lot of dust when you walk around but where you put your tents there is dirt and there is dirt around the campsite. The host came by and asked how we were doing if we needed anything. After that I walked around the campsite to see what it had to offer and what was around it the creek was about 100 yards from where were staying really close and there was a nice path that led to it from the campsite. I want to check out the bathroom see what they look like turns out they were really clean and they are flushable and on the other side of the bathrooms with showers they were also really clean. The next day we celebrated my brothers birthday with some cake and we had some left over so we gave it to the host. That's how much we really like him. On the day we were leaving we all wanted to go on a hike and come back and cook some food before we left so I ask the host if we could leave at a later date and he gave us an extra two hours for us to leave which is really nice and no other camp host has done for us. Not for me. Nothing to do here and river access is practically zero. I recommend Gansner Bar or North Fork or Queen Lily campgrounds down the road instead. Unfortunately none of those are reserveable, but there are lots of sites there. read more

Just spent 2 nites here for the M-weekend. It was a diff experience than Yosemite. This campground has only 20 sites I think and only 8-9 of them were filled the 2nd nite I was there, possibly due to the bad weather.Very tranquil and peaceful. Nothing much to do at the campground. You would have to drive to sightsee, which is what we did. We drove into Greenville (has a supermarket) and pretty scenery. Also drove to Taylorsville to Genese to Antelope Lake (it was snowing, so disappointing, took 2 pics and left Antelope lake). There was century bike event in town that day we explored, but the route was so quiet, there's hardly anyone on the road. Population in the nearby towns are like 100.We didn't bring our bikes. But if we did, we could have biked in some towns where it was flat. I actually booked the wrong place, intending to go to Oroville's Feather Falls Scenic Area but booked Plumas County instead! Oopsie. Abit of a drive from SF so I might only return one more time, and that's to see its fall foliage. A bit disappointed not to see too much wildflowers (too cold). read more

I would love to give this place a better rating, considering how beautiful the scenery is. However, first off, the camp "hosts" were completely rude to us the entire time we were there. We have small children and they were being kids and having fun, not screaming or running through other people's campsites, just doing normal kid things and playing in the wooded area and the host came over yelling at us that we need to keep our kids quiet. Then I went to take a shower, which you have to pay for, and he came banging on the door yelling at me that I needed to get out and that the shower was broken. I stated I did not know it was broken (no sign stating it was broken, the door was open, etc.) and would wait for the other one, then he lets some other guy in there and "fixes" the shower and gives him a free shower. But right after that guys gets his shower, my aunt goes in there and he goes ballistic stating the shower is broken and she needs to pay him for the shower before she can use it! My sister went and asked for the number of the forest service and he said, "why were you unhappy? Do you feel like we were harassing you? One complaint out of 1000 doesn't matter." Throughout the whole conversation his wife was standing behind him shaking her head and scowling at sister. I know that kids can be loud, but I do not feel we were doing anything completely out of line. They were excited to be out in nature and have fun. Taking our kids out to gain experience and have time with our family is the whole point of camping. We were not up partying or drinking and being loud at one in the morning or anything. We simply took our kids out camping to give the memories and experiences of camping with their family. I cannot believe the atrocious behavior from these hosts and have never been to a place that is so un-family friendly. The other down side....the train is so loud and runs numerous times throughout the day and the middle of the night. Got woken up about 3 or 4 times throughout the night. So I guess if you don't have kids or don't mind the train, it is a beautiful place. Beware if you have small children who make noise that most normal children do because the hosts obviously don't like them! read more

ok, i may be a little biased when it comes to this site. i grew up going to this campground when i was a...you guessed it...kid. i dont know about you, but i go camping to camp. not to stay in a cabin complete with bidet and look for a local michelin rated restaurant. part of the charm of this site is it is right on the feather river with train tracks all along it. who doesn't like to relive their childhood and count the cars. there is one train a year that is a passenger train that still goes along the feather river through Union Pacific complete with caboos. yes they do run at night, but if you sleep with someone who snores, you probably wont notice as you have ear plugs in already. i would give it a shot. plenty of bats at night. gold panning is always fun especially when you find a little flash...and if you must bathe, there is running water...THE RIVER. grandpa would just head to the river with a bar of soap...yeah, it works! read more
