My girlfriend took me out to Haluwa for a special evening and some Chinese food. She'd been there before their flood (around 2019 or so) and the restaurant has just been recently "renovated" and reopened. We thought we'd give them a try. Upon arrival, we were escorted into a dining room that felt like being brought back to 1976. Painted plywood booths, apparently recently reupholstered, but old well-worn painted walls. The "silverware" was cheap metal, terribly flimsy and thin. The dishes were mismatched old heavy ceramic. We were given an old-style "plastic sleeve with paper inserts" menu. Trying to make the most of it, we decided to try several dishes, knowing we'd have plenty of leftovers to take home. We ordered: chicken wings, chicken fingers, chicken lo mien, chicken fried rice, chicken chow mien, and lemon chicken dinner. The waitress had to come back and ask about the lemon chicken because she said "the kitchen never makes that" (it's listed 4th on their dinner menu...) Chicken Fingers - probably the best food we were served - cooked as you'd expect from most Chinese restaurants - tasted good. We had to ask for duck sauce to dip it in. Chicken Wings - looked good but a bit undercooked - expected somewhat crispy but they were not. Overall, they tasted alright. Chicken Lo Mien - VERY dark in color - not much taste. Chicken Fried Rice - VERY dark in color - also not much taste. Chicken Lo Mien - NOT EVEN CLOSE To what we expected! If you Google pics of chicken lo mien, you'll see noodles with chicken and veggies. This was just some cabbage with a couple of bamboo shoots and some rubber chicken. Tasteless... Lemon Chicken - fried chicken with not much sauce - rubbery chicken, very little taste. Overall, we were very disappointed. Looks and feels like a cheap restaurant surviving on their lounge regulars to keep the doors open. The food is a second thought. If you're looking for Chinese food - this is strictly a last resort! The Haluwa is back!! Our favorite Chinese restaurant for years, waited a while before returning. Just like it always was, everything was great. Ravioli ( fried dumplings) were presented piping hot with a delicious filling. Next we had pineapple chicken, again served on hot dishes with vegetable fried rice. Some jerk here at the bar was so interesting in trying to get in some womans pants that he kept leaning into me. Despite moving over a bit, and trying to get his attention unsuccessfully, I decided to be the better man and move to a table. After the dude left, I ended up back at the bar. I griped a bit to a friend, the bartender, and let it go. Fine. Someone must've said something to him because about a half hour later he stumbled back in with some half assed apology. To which I just said fine and wanted it to end. He persisted for whatever reason and then puts his hand on my shoulder in some attempt to amplify his position. After asking three times to get his hand off me, I told him that it would be either him or me who removes his hand, his choice. Sure, I could've been more cordial, but I don't want some strange asshole touching me. Not at all. And if that sentiment doesn't resonate after three attempts, then we're going to try a different route. Turns out that this guy was a friend of the bartenders. So apparently because of that, it's my unknown responsibility to treat him with kid gloves. Despite the fact that his initial consideration was nonexistent. So the bartender starts yelling at me. Not because of the interaction, but because it was her friend. And I'll tell you this. I don't owe anyone anything more than the respect they give me. This jerk had zero to begin with and wanted a second chance. Sorry bud. Sorry bartender. If that's where you want to start then it's where I want to finish. Sad thing is, for as long as I've gone there, getting the bartenders attention for anything at all is a battle. Consistently hanging out with her friends, smoking butts, or just disappearing. Located next to Shorty's in the Nashua Mall, this place is similar to the Jade Dragon in Merrimack, where they serve up a Chinese menu and offer live entertainment, DJ and karaoke in the lounge. The dimly lit lounge has a full cocktail bar, comfy seating, and performing area. I stopped here for a late Thursday night dinner on the way back home. The place was fairly busy because it was karaoke night! On Fridays, there are live bands and there is never a cover charge at the Haluwa! This review is for the food. I asked to be seated in the dining room, which was empty and has plenty of booth and table seating. The menu offers a good selection of Chinese dishes including Polynesian and Szechuan dishes. 21 Luncheon Combinations ($4.75-$6.75) are offered 11:30AM-3:30PM (Mon-Sat) and as well as 9 Dinner Combinations ($9.50-$10.50). The Pu Pu Platter for 2 which offers a sampling of appetizers comes out to the table flaming. If you don't care for Chinese food, an American menu is offered including sandwiches, chicken, fried scallops, and more, all served with French fries and a tossed salad. An older waitress did a good job taking care of my table, who brought out ice water, hot tea, bread with duck sauce and hot mustard. I started with a bowl of Hot & Sour Soup ($3.75), which was very spicy, but good. For dinner I had the Dinner Combo 6 ($9.50): Roast Pork Lo Mein with pork fried rice and 6 chicken fingers. The pork fried rice was covered in lots of soy sauce, no good.The chicken fingers were greasy and fried golden brown and very crispy. The lo mein (medium wide noodles) was pretty good and tasty. While I was eating my dinner, I could hear the DJ and karaoke going on in the lounge. I heard an older guy croon the 1970s One Hit Wonder "Magic" by Pilot. It was sooooo bloody awwwful! I wish I could SOUND THE GONG! "Oh ho ho it's Magic....." Just imagine the character Bill Dauterive (the bald guy in the white tank) from "King of the Hill" singing drunk karaoke and that's exactly how this guy in the lounge sounded. We went for Saturday night dinner around 5:30 a couple of weeks ago. We hadn't been to Haluwa for a couple of years at least before that. The food was excellent--fresh, flavorful, no heavy dark sauces or mystery ingredients. Haluwa is old-fashioned, Cantonese-"Polynesian"- New England-style Chinese. So if you're looking for Northern Chinese gourmet, this isn't for you! We had Pineapple Gai Pan, egg rolls, and pork friend rice. The server was friendly, attentive, and expert. I asked for extra bean sprouts in the friend rice--no problem. The rice was a bit oily, but all else was perfection. Many more patrons arrived while we were there, too. Now, the decor... hasn't changed since the 1980s. The bar... is crowded and noisy. But the food makes up for this. One of my favorite things about this restaurant is that when I sit down, they never ask me if I want anything to drink. Then they proceed to not ask for the duration of my meal. I also appreciate how the chef makes his crab Rangoon with no crab at all, and instead doubles the amount of cream cheese. Definitely a bold move. I'm also convinced that this restaurant has thought of a way to save money by buying one bottle of soy sauce and then watering it down to fill every bottle in the building. Went today with a friend for lunch. They are still short-staffed. The poor woman was alone to serve everyone, and she was a new staff member, and learning on her own. They seemed to have plenty of cooks in the kitchen, but it took about a half-hour to get our food. The taste was the same as years ago, and was enjoyable, but was not hot - room temperature. Also, there needs to be some background music to drown out some of the conversations and noise from the kitchen. I would go again, but may wait another month to give them time to organize. This is strictly a review of Haluwa POST-reopening, and I'm willing to meet them halfway because they're probably still getting their footing after a time away. I can deal with absolutely nothing having been restored or renovated - that frozen-in-time motif was always part of the draw (hell, I'd like to see a payphone in the lobby, but I digress). But the food itself was just not what I remember from before. The egg rolls and wonton seemed almost reheated and left to cool for a time, and the wings, which used to be among the crispiest, most flavorful I'd ever had, were...well just Chinese chicken wings. So I know all the happenings that go on in the kitchen back there. So the negative comments about how this place is old school, blah blah. I actually thought it was awesome!! We came here on Saturday night after going to Fright Kingdom with about 13 of us and the food was actually very good. We had beef with scallions, fried rice, boneless spareribs and crab rangoon. I was pleasantly surprised of how good it actually was. Everything came out in the old style metal bowls with the metal tops. Just like they did when I was a kid washing a 100 of them! We ordered one frozen pina colada and it was very strong and very delicious! The place is totally old school. They still even give you pinapples at the end with toothpicks.
