If you're an amateur radio operator or thinking about becoming one and you're in the SoCal area this is an excellent first step for you. They can diagnose most equipment problems. Suggest people/companies to give you a better analysis. And even suggest organizations to join or interact with to learn more or to join and enjoy the camaraderie. Recently, I came in to purchase a rotor for my Hex Beam antenna. I already knew what I wanted since I looked over their website. HRO Denver, CO A decent place for amateur radio phone orders. Only a couple complaints from me: 1. The online catalog is a royal pain in butt to navigate. Plus even if designated a specific item, the catalog throws in things "related to" but not what you want. 2. Be careful of whom you are speaking to. Most of the time the phone sales persons are very nice, willing to help identify what you are seeking without being a you're-an-idiot salesperson. I've been shopping at HRO Denver for many years. I always get great service from all the staff. I live an hour from Denver so sometimes I order by phone. They always ship the same day (most times free of charge) and I get it the next day. If they don't have it in stock, the find it at one of their other stores and it ships from there (again, same day and most times free of charge). I always shop around for the best price and it's rare that HRO isn't the best deal. I also appreciate their military veterans discount. read more

I have spent well over $1000 at HRO in Denver, including buying a Yaesu FT-857D and a RigExpert AA-170 Antenna Analyzer online that was fulfilled by the Denver store and until yesterday, never had a problem. I drove 60 miles to look at a particular transceiver (Yaesu FT-DX1200) and talk to their people for their "knowledge and experience" with the product. I was in the store for about half an hour and neither employee acknowledged my presence in the store. I browsed for about half an hour, and the one employee that was helping a new ham got on a phone call with another new ham, and the other kept talking about the past with who I presumed to be a friend of his. They WERE NOT busy and there were two employees in the store; one that was helping a new ham and the other who sat next to someone talking about their military history. I knew he was an employee as he had an HRO shirt on, and so there were 5 people in the store; me, two employees, one other customer, and one of the employee's friends who he was reminiscing with while ignoring a customer who was ready and willing to spend about $1500 on the spot. After a half hour of walking around and looking at the transceiver I was considering buying, and being completely ignored, I left. Needless to say, they lost a sale and a customer. They ARE NOT the only game in town, as you have AES, DX Engineering, Universal Radio, Amazon and Gigaparts to name a few. I wrote the store manager about the experience, but really expect to hear no response. I would think that brick and mortar stores with an online presence would go out of their way to help customers who actually show up at their store, but though I have been at their store a couple of times before and got so-so service, all it takes is one bad experience like this to lose a customer for life. Maybe if I went up to the employee who sat for the whole time I was there BS'ing about the past with someone and ask him if I could interrupt his conversation to trouble him to help me, but WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO??? "Excuse me, I hate to interrupt your personal conversation, but could I trouble you to sell me this $1500 transceiver?" Why should I have to??? With all the online retailers competing for my business, many provide OUTSTANDING customer service, HRO IS NOT the only game in town any longer, and they will never see another dime from me! read more

Recently re-tested and obtained my amateur license back. The store is well equipped and staff are always friendly and super knowledgeable on radios and related electronics. Staff also helps you understand positives and negatives of equipment. Even after you buy equipment, they still answer questions and help with set up and programming as needed. I never feel pressured by these guys and always learn something new when I visit. Prices are competitive with on-line. Great customer service. read more

Picked up a flyer at HRO for an appointment to take the tech test. Passed the test and HRO became my new "toy store". The team in the Denver store are extremely knowledgeable and happily provide you with pros and cons of your planned purchases. They are patient with newbies and help anyway they can. I do QRP and SOTA (not mainstream) and these guys always nail it. They even helped me create a stealth HF antenna that hasn't been noticed in the last 4 years. If they don't have it they know where to find it. I'm always a newbie in some area, and the staff's patience and enthusiasm are a really supportive. Worst customer service...or should I say NO customer service. I visited this store 2/11/14 at approximately 3:00 and during the 15-min or so that I was in the store not once did any of the four employees even attempt to acknowledge my presence. While I wasn't expecting to be pounced upon the minute I entered the store I do expect some interest in what I may be looking to buy after I have browsed the shelves for a few minutes and am obviously interested in a few radios. I stopped at the display of HF rigs and spent time looking at a few different models, one of which had a price tag in excess of $10,000 no interest whatsoever from anybody working in the store. I acknowledge that one of the gentlemen was on the phone helping somebody and the others may have been helping one or two other customers, but even then it would have been nice to at least have my presence acknowledged. That's okay though. After leaving the store I found one of the HF rigs in which I was interested for less money at another dealer. I will never again stop by this HRO store as they obviously have enough customers and are not interested in cultivating any new customers. I travel to Denver quite often and was hoping to finally be able to shop HRO in person and not just via the website. Looks like that's not to be the case. Maybe the fact that I am younger than 50 years old made it look like I wasn't a serious ham radio shopper? read more

Wanted to come in to a storefront to check out a external GPS for my new scanner and some units. One older guy greeted me and tried to locate the model # unit I wanted (and called in ahead of time) and could not find it. He asked another associate and found it. I asked if they could answer a few questions about programing and The nice older gentleman had no idea and directed me towards Jerry. I asked him my questions and he never directly answered me. He couldn't make eye contact. I get I'm a new enthusiast but, I'm also a customer who will be potential return customer. He then made me wait 15 minutes as he helped consignment customers and walk in right in front of me never asking me if I mind waiting while he helped someone else. I asked if they did local in house programming for San Diego and he answered no but the older guy said they do to come back a different time...I ended up just walking out, awkward experience but they did have my part.
