I went to Hamburgão in Kearny, I ordered a strawberry smoothie. The strawberry tasted awfull, it was spoiled.

The food was really good and the price is very affordable. Just be wary that there is only street parking.

This is where the original Brazilian burger began in Newark (not counting the Silver Bullet truck at Penn Station). If you must pick one, pick the most popular burger: the X-Tudo. Not any regular burger - but a burger stuffed with everything you can think of: cheese, ham, bacon, egg, potato sticks, lettuce, tomato, and corn. The sauce on the burger (mix of ketchup and mayo) gives the burger a great taste! Burgers are a little messy, but oh so good! I am still new to the Brazilian food scene but I decided to go here instead of snack Mania because they had a vegetarian option for their coxinhas. I got the Brazilian cream cheese with corn and it was fantastic. I also picked up a dessert for my wife and Will a day later of you for it. I am not sure of the Spanish name but it was a chocolate ball with chocolate sprinkles. This place has a bathroom and the line moves quickly. Those Brazillians, with their kinky ideas of how American food should be presented... they've brought us Hamburgao. The creators of the Brazillian hamburger definitely saw pictures of a lot of hamburgers, and they read about them, and then they designed their own. There's meat, yes, and a bun, yes. After that, all bets are off. Your sandwich can be chicken, steak, or burger (or fish, I think?), and toppings range from lettuce and tomato to potato sticks and 1000-island dressing. It's a bit nuts. The menu has combinations I would never have imagined, but all seem... kind of... tasty. In my opinion, there are a few too many combos, and the menu can be a little overwhelming. It might be better to have a few signature selections, and then a basic build-your-own type menu with all the options. The restuaruant itself is pretty stripped down, fast-food type, and the service can be spotty, but the food is clean and if you don't care to be waited on, they don't really give you too much grief if you get up to order for yourself. I can't decide between 4 and 5 stars! We'll call it 4.5 stars rounded up. So my boyfriend lives in Newark (I know.. right?!) and takes me on near-daily trips to Pathmark (why can't men do all their grocery shopping in 1 trip??).. he lives down in that area, and we always pass Hamburgao. We like to laugh at the name and joked a lot about getting food from there, but neither of us dared to seriously suggest it. And then one day this past weekend we sat around trying to figure out what to order after a particularly draining 4.5 hour visit to a car dealership. No chinese food. No pizza. What the f else can we get? "Let's order hamburgao..haha" I said.. only half joking, but wanting to gauge his response. "You want to?" he responded, with a hint of seriousness (is that a word?) "Well... I did happen to fall upon their menu and bookmark it to my blackberry internet...." So we chose to go. We got there around 7ish on a Friday night and were the only ones in there besides a group of like 13 year old boys. I doublechecked their paper menu again to make sure I was ready for my order... "I'd like the cheeseburger.... no corn, lettuce, tomato, or mayo though please." The counter girl eyed me questioningly, and I slowly shook my head yes. I like my burgers plain. But I was willing to give the potato sticks a chance. My bf got the same thing but less obnoxious by not asking for any substitutions (gotta give him credit for putting up with me), and we ordered the large fries to share. I realize this is a long review and I haven't even reviewed the place yet. The backstory was essential though. I had yelped this place and saw the great reviews. I even heard it could very well be the best burger in jersey. And well.. it did not disappoint. I was hesitant about the mozzarella but it tasted awesome. We saw this place on the Travel Channel and decided to hit it up since it's close by. The place is small and nothing fancy, it was clean though. My dude got a hamburger and I got the Tilapia Sandwich. My sandwich was 2 decent sized pieces of nicely fried tilapia with lettuce and a TOTALLY rotten tomato. The bun that it was on was HUGE and there was no sauce to go on the sandwich. My dude said the burger was good but mostly because of all the toppings that they threw on it. We didn't get any shakes or desserts, I would have loved to but we were a little disappointed with our meal and just wanted to go. Sometimes Travel channel benders can impair the senses. After two hours of Burger Land, the woman and I decided to try the Brazilian sensation that George Motz raved on about. Turns out Motz was as fried as we were. You could hear the record come to a hault as the faux-hawked gentleman at the counter greeted us with a cold stare to to the tune of "go F yourself". As we ordered our food, he talked down to us like his two unwanted children. But I'm not there to make friends. I'm there to eat a burger that this "expert" recommended. How does one qualify to be a burger expert anyway? Can I review him too? But I digress. So when the burger came (15 minutes after the woman's grease bathed fish sandwich arrived), Wendy's suddenly appealed to me. The burger was obviously something frozen, lacking in flavor and appropriate amount of fat. When I think Brazilian, I think foxy women and juicy red meat. Not freezer burnt Bubba burger. As for the other crucial ingredients, the bun overwhelmed the burger (pillow fight!), as did the soggy tomatoes. The egg was tough, and the potato sticks, well I guess they added a Brazilian flair. I also think there was cheese on the burger, but it could've been the sauce. Or it could've been both. I came across this place as I searched on my phone for a place to get lunch in the area. After we found the place, it took us about 15 minutes to find a parking spot. Hamburgao is a small cafe style restaurant. It has less than 15-20 small tables. They have a menu of sandwiches and burgers as well as a whole section for these "finger foods" and pastries. The waitress didn't speak much english, so I pointed to #1 which was Hamburgao which I believe (it's been a while so I don't remember completely) had a thin steak, egg, potato fries (those thin shreds), tomatoes, lettuce...and i think a bit more... I also ordered this "sausage" from the appetizer menu. I don't recall the name exactly. The food came out and the burger was huge. I wasn't expecting it to be that way. Each table also has a squeeze bottle of this mayo-like sauce/spread. I put some on my burger before eating it. The burger was delicious. It had a different taste....unlike traditional burgers (beef, american cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion)...but that different taste was a good taste. I definitely enjoyed every bite of it. Also, that sausage I got was basically a corndog without the stick. But, it was the best corndog I've ever had in my life. Hamburgao is definitely worth stopping by if you're in the area. I would like to try more of their "finger foods" since the "corndog" was extremely satisfying. This is a really great place if you are looking for lunch or a light supper. While there are 12 different burger combos, there are also sandwiches, salads , and fried pastries filled with stuff like ground meat, chicken, or cheese.I had a delish burger that had corn and those potato stick things on it and lettuce and tomatoes. This is a wonderfully diverse neighborhood, and most of the clients here were Brazilian. The help was able to understand me with little effort. The prices are VERY inexpensive, but everything seemed fresh and the service was great. I will be back. While you're there, go down a block or two to Seabra's supermarket. The North Ironbound is a great place to have Portuguese cuisine. Unfortunately, when you arent that big a lover of large slices of meat with almost no sauce or dressing on them, you end up having few options of where to grab a good meal. Here comes Hamburgao and the rest of the similar style eateries. The Portuguese burger is unlike any other burger I tried because of the toppings on it, which can include almost anything you can think of. If you are trying to gain some weight, this is definitely the place for you. I usually do not eat cheeseburgers because I am not a fan of yellow cheese but here the cheeseburgers come with mozzarella (which I have grown to love) in addition to potato sticks, lettuce, tomatoes, mayo and corn. The patty itself was pretty dry and the taste was not one I was used to, but all together the burger was really tasty and left a good impression. The prices here are more than reasonable and the fries were not an afterthought either. This might not be a place to eat at on a daily basis but definitely a nice option if you want to diversify your meals a little bit. read more

Brazilians seem to have a stoner's take on burgers. In essence the menu boils down to your choice of chicken, steak or a burger topped with any combination of ham, bacon, potato sticks and corn. It may sound odd, but it's a great treat when you're feeling indulgent. It's probably great as a hangover cure as well. The pastries at the counter look appealing but for some reason I've always been too shy to start asking what's what and try anything. I think this neighborhood is actually nicer than the one I live in, however my car did get broken into during the brief amount of time it took me to eat a sandwich here. I was able to finally cross this joint out from my "Burger Bucket List" last week. I needed to bring the ride to my auto mechanic in Newark, and Hamburgao just so happened to be nearby. I came here hella hungry, and I still wasn't able to finish this beast (ordered the #1 - Hamburgao) with a side of fries. It's not your typical burger... Yes, there's beef between two enormous buns... whoa.... that didn't sound right. FOOD I had the famous Hamburgao w/ steak, while my friend had it w/ chicken. They were both tastey because of all the awesome ingredients (potato sticks, corn, melt gooey cheese, some sort of mystery sauce, egg, back) They complimented each other =D The hamburgao was somewhere between $6-8, definitely worth it. In terms of drinks, they just have a fridge stocked with your typical sodas and a few beverages from overseas (I believe I saw spanish on the labels) I believe I also had a coconut flan, while my friend had a chocolate flan. Each slice like about $2-3, but the taste and portion was made it seem like it should've been more. They serve them in slices like from a cake, and they're massive. The flan isn't like asian flan that's extremely soft, it's more like the jello you find at chinese buffets, a firm gelatin. They tasted great, coconut tasted like coconut and chocolate tasted like chocolate ATMOSPHERE You go in and seat yourself at some simple tables and chairs, nothing fancy. However, it's really the people that made this place feel comfortable. From observing other customers, I could tell a lot of them were regulars and so they just treated the place like their home (in a good way) The staff emit a sort of natural friendliness, so all together, I felt very comfortable eating here. OVERALL Food 8/10 (because of the taste/serving size/price ratio) Atmosphere 7/10 (albeit nothing fancy, it was comfortable and easy to talk to people at your table bc it was't loud) Great place for any type of person really: if you're a foodie and want to try new things or if you just want to have a tastey inexpensive meal with your friends. read more

This place is a delicious spot I go to whenever I am in NJ. Note that the burger is not your average juicy burger. It is thin meat and on the drier side, but still packed with flavor and a a huge soft bun. They put potato crisps and corn on top and their house sauce. Delicious. Their fries are crispy. Hamburgao - Burger with eggs, it was ok....no impressed - Burgers Near Me - Newark, New Jersey

My son and I went to our first hockey game at the Prudential Center this winter. I'd seen an episode of Burger Land: New Jersey Sliders on the Travel Channel. Since we were already in town, we just had to hit this joint. Ironbound section of Newark still has a bad rep with lots of New Jerseyans. Even locals tell me there's still a lot of crime. So I wasn't all that surprised that friends were texting me that it was a bad idea to take my kid there late at night. I'm an adventurist and believer that most people are inherently good. Bad things can happen anywhere. Be alert, don't act like an @sshole, and trust your instincts. I misread my gps and parked kind of far away. My son wanted me to repark but I was hyper and was needing to move my legs. "We'll do some evening time urban exploration by foot" but it was freakin FREEZING. Our brisk walk led us to this unassuming corner spot, totally unfancy, as is, gramma's dining room feel, with a few locals chatting and eating... could potentially make newbies a little self conscious. We were stared at a bit but in that curious friendly way. Portuguese (I'm pretty sure) speaking staff were friendly and some were more fluent in English than others. Our server took her time trying to answer my questions in a mix of Portuguese/English and hand motions. I wasn't in a rush and appreciated her efforts. This place is NOT for those who are clean eaters or dieters...unless it's a cheat day. There was a lot to choose from but we were both simultaneously drawn to the Cheese Tudo Burger: ham, cheese, lettuce, egg, tomato, corn, mayo, potato sticks and shreds of carrot. Yea. That's pretty much a party in your mouth. We both quietly chomped down and we'd give each other that nod like "mmhmm. yup. this is dang yummy." Juicy and full of texture. You'll need extra napkins.Next time, I'd ask for the egg to be less fried so the yolk can pop it's goodness all over the other ingredients. IF only this place stayed open late. They have very good brazilian style burgers, which has everything on it, including corn, eggs, fries and whatever else u can imagine. Like many of todays latest burger spots, they have an eclectic menu loaded with so many choices that you nearly commit to returning for a 2nd meal before you even try your first. This is one of my favorite places to grab a burger if I am ever in the Newark/Kearny area especially when I am with friends from out of town. The food is great but be warned it may be too much to eat if your not a heavy eater. I am a big guy and sometimes I feel challenged eating one of the bigger ones. The food is great but I highly recommend eating it asap after you get it otherwise it might become soggy. The combination of favors is great and one of my favorite parts is the crunch from the potato sticks. I am giving it 4 stars because two times I had called for pick up they messed up my order. One of those times I came in to pick up my order I paid, got home, started eating and my phone rang. They called me and were mad that I didn't pick up my order. They didn't ask for my name when I called so I just told them what I ordered and it was ready when I got there. Another time they straight up lost my order and I had to wait for them to make it. My favorite Newark burger place is now Brick City Bar & Grill. Their meat is of higher quality, but it's hard to beat the volume and price of Hamburgao's burgers. Humburgao is now a 4 to me. I realized that Hamburgao is Brazilian, not Portuguese. The place is small and gets crowded during lunch, so try to go a bit early, especially when going with a group. read more

I came here after my mom mentioned having heard that it was great & after asking a friend who lives in the area if it lived up to the hype. With her confirmation we came and were pretty disappointed. Now, it was good, but it was not great or delicious. I had the #3, and while it was piled high with toppings it lacked in flavor. Also as another reviewer mentioned, it was not as quick as I thought it might be and for four people the meal (3 burgers, 4 drinks and one dessert) came out to $32.
