My name is Stan Winters and I had surgery done by Dr. Mir on 7/1/13. Dr. Mir saw me about 2 months before the procedure and indicated that I had severe stenosis or narrowing of the openings where the nerve roots exit at the L4, L5 and S1 level. He reviewed my MRI and without wasting any time, asked if I wanted or was considering surgery. I told him yes and he proceeded to request some more x-rays for a follow up visit where he outlined my surgical options. He was extremely clear and answered all my questions. I had the procedure done at the Disc Newport OP surgery center and was cared for by an incredibly competent, caring staff. I'm a 31 year old who has suffered from severe lower back pain for years caused by extreme sports. Hoping to avoid surgery I had tried everything from epidural injections, to chiro, to PT, to inversion therapy. Not being able to take it anymore, I had an initial consulation with Dr. Mir. Quickly he recommended surgery but pointed out the pros and cons and chances of recovery with/without surgery. Within 30 days I had a lumbar diskectomy of my L-4/L-5 and L-5/S1. I have come back from ACL reconstruction so figured this recovery was going to be similar. The downside to the disk recover is it's very slow and tedius. At least with ACL your doing weights, balancing, light workouts, strengthening, etc. With the lumbar surgery it was simply "rest" and "relax". For someone who is very active, being patient was the toughest part. after 3-4 months I was hoping to be back to normal activity but residual pain was still bothering me. Dr. Mir reassured me that this was normal, even for patients who abide by their PT routines. Sure enough, around 6 months later the pain went away completely. I was in a very bad situation herniating a disc in my lower back so I made an appointment with DISC and Dr. Hamid. The Doctor was very professional and made me comfortable that he understood exactly what I was going through and was able to communicate effectively exactly what it will take to get me on the road to recovery. It took several months as my injury was severe however I always felt I was in good hands under Dr. Hamid's supervision. When I was in a lot of pain and really couldn't walk Dr. Hamid treated me and I forever grateful. I highly recommend his office including Jamie who helps with scheduling and administration. Dr. Mir is a very honest doctor. I suddenly had real bad back pain and I couldn't move. I went to another doctor and took an MRI, he recommended surgery for me. I wanted to get another opinion and a friend recommended Dr. Mir. I am so thankful I saw him. He suggested I bed rest for four or five days and gave me some anti-inflammatory medication. After resting for four days and taking the medications my pain level went from a 9 or 10 to a 3 and now I am pain free!!!! I am so glad I saw Dr. Mir he changed my life I am back normal. Not only did he seem extremely well educated and qualified, but he took his time with me and genuinely seems to want to help. This is a lengthy review but I wanted to share my experience with back injury and decision to have the fusion (dual level) surgery. I hurt my back in November of 2016 and decided to go see a doctor about 2 months later because I the pain was constant (especially with certain movements). I went to my chiropractor who tried physical therapy with no improvement. I finally had a MRI and x-rays which revealed 2 ruptured discs (L4-L5 and L5 - S1) and misalignment between the involved vertebrae. My chiropractor recommended I see a specialist and he recommended Dr. Mir because Dr. Mir is very good and conservative with his treatments. I took my x-rays to Dr. Mir and he explained the problem and why I was experiencing the constant pain. I had two much space between vertebrae which caused them to shift and put pressure on the nerves in that area. During that first visit Dr. Mir explained my options - I could have an epidural to relieve the pain or have back surgery to fuse the vertebrae together. Dr. Mir warned me that an epidural would more than likely be a temporary fix for me - I am a 48-year-old woman who is very active. I work out 4 days a week and do numerous physical activities with my family. An epidural will relieve the pain but would not correct the shifting of the vertebrae. Dr. Mir recommended I have the back surgery which made me VERY nervous and upset. The fear of being laid up for weeks or months at a time scared the hell out of me. Dr. Mir must have seen the look on my face because he sat with me and explained the modern procedures that are used for the surgery. He really didn't put me at ease cause all I could think about are my friends and relatives who had back fusion surgeries and the pain/ mobility issues they had after (years) the surgery. Dr. Mir took the time to calm me down and assure me the techniques used for this type of surgery is much different than what was used 10-20 years ago. Dr. Mir explained the surgery is a minimal evasive surgery with much better recovery times. I still wasn't convinced. My husband and I left his office, wondering what we should do. My husband spent the next few days researching the modern techniques. My husband showed me different testimonials from various people who had the surgery. After a few days and a lot of discussion, I finally decided to have the surgery. SURGERY I had my surgery in March 2017 at Marina Del Rey Hospital. My surgery lasted about 8-9 hours and the nursing staff made me feel very comfortable through that first night. The next day, I talked to the attending doctor who checked my vitals etc., then I met my physical therapist. The therapist talked to me about getting out of bed and walking. The therapist helped me out of bed and helped me walk to the nurses' station and back to my room! Walking a day after having two back joints fused! By the second day I was getting out of bed by myself (very slowly) and walking with a walker! I was able to go home 2 days after having the surgery. Pain I went home 2 days after the surgery with directions to take the prescribed pain medication every 4-6 hours as needed. I took the pain pills as prescribed for about 2 weeks. After that, I noticed the pain started to drop off and I found myself taking pain pills 1-2 times a day for another week or so. It's now November 2017 and I haven't taken a pain pill in months! Dr. Mir What can I say.... Dr. Mir is fantastic!!!! HE was patient with me and my husband and answered all the questions we had for him. I've read that other have had issues with him but my experience was nothing short of amazing! I first saw him in Feb. 2017 and had my surgery a little more than a month later. Dr. Mir was always professional and knows his stuff! Some people called him aloof but I didn't see that in him. He always may me feel at ease which made me trust him before going into surgery. The staff was friendly and took care of everything. Bottom Line - I know back injuries are both painful and stressful. If you have a back/spine injury and have been putting off seeing a doctor, don't do it anymore! Today's techniques are much better than what was done 10+ years ago. If I could give zero stars I would. Too bad there wasn't a review on here before I went, otherwise I wouldn't have subjected myself to this horrible office. First of all, Gary (in the front office, if you can call it that) was rude & unprofessional from the start. I waited 1.5hrs in crowded, small dumpy office w/6 dining room chairs. I sat there observing his poor customer service skills & impatience. Then I finally got in the inner office (which thank God was larger). Dr. Mir seemed nice, but he didn't even bother to look at the previous physician's statement--maybe that indicates he doesn't really take his staffing seriously either. I never had this type of experience at any other spine specialist's office. It made me lose confidence; would you trust you spine to an office where you had a poor experience? It's his staff that's the crux of the problem. Respect for the patient doesn't exist here; I was actually told by Gary " don't you have anything better to do?" when I expressed my concerns. I asked, "Is there an office manager?" He replied "No." Then when I called back (after he hung up on me) he said she would call me back. He blatantly lied to me and I called him out on it & his poor customer service skills--in response he was sarcastic and offensive. I escalated to the office manager, Mylien, who was completely ineffective & defensive. I cancelled my appointment & she became rude--and I doubt I'll get the requested call back from Dr. Mir. It's very disheartening that she took no accountability for the way the office is run. Like the other review says: avoid at all costs. This isn't the place to go if you're looking for a professional office with a courteous staff. BTW, this is my opinion -- and even though Gary said I shouldn't have any--I'm posting it here on Yelp so other patients don't have to endure such an experience. read more

I have serious questions about Dr. Mir's ethical practices and patient care. Over the course of three months, his suggested medical care, for my herniated disc, kept shifting. First, he recommended a decompression. Shortly thereafter, he called back and said I would not be a great candidate for a decompression, but discussed a disectomy and a fusion. After finally agreeing on a procedure, I got another call, the next day, saying that he suggested we "hold off." Instead, he suggested pursuing stem cell injections and encouraged more epidural injections. Well, it turns out, the person he recommended for the injections is now in the process of joining D.I.S.C. So, while I am suffering, I have documented evidence that my protocol of care was motivated by potentially unnecessary procedures, that would just keep extending the process (I have been suffering since Dec., and racking up charges). Other examples include: when I told him that I was pursing stem cell injections for my achilles tendinosis, he called it "hocus pocus." However, recently, when his office started offering them, along with a trial, low and behold, he recommended stem cell injections. Also, CVS had to fax his office 4 times for medication refills. This week, I was scheduled to see Dr. Mir in the Newport office. I took time off of work to drive from LA to Orange County. I arrive, and find out that Dr. Mir was not even in the office! He was in the Marina. There are so many amazing spine specialists in our area. Avoid Dr. MIr. and his office. read more

Dr. Mir is the first and only M.D. to order comprehensive diagnostic imaging to accurately pinpoint the source(s) of pain in my C-Spine. This is one of the worst doctors that I have ever encountered. All he cares about is getting paid. I saw him and he ordered more tests(MRI). He said he would call me with the results. It has been 14 days and nothing. I have called his office 8 times asking when he was going to call me. Twice they have made appointments and he did not call. Both times I waited at least 2 hours for the call. I offered to do it via email but he refused to reply. Apparently he does not really care about his patients...I am an out of state patient and because I will not be back to see him, he lost total interest in following through and giving me my results. I've always enjoyed an active outdoor life, including deep sea fishing, long walks in nature, yoga and other physical activities. I retired two years ago and was looking forward to enjoying my retirement. After reviewing the images with Dr. Mir and discussing my symptoms, I was also impressed when Dr. Mir suggested that we start with revised non-surgery procedures. If the symptoms continued or became worse, then I could consider having Dr. Mir perform a minimally invasive spine surgery procedure. I followed Dr. Mir's suggestions and just returned from 3 weeks in lower Baja California where I enjoyed four days of deep sea fishing in the Sea of Cortez. Dr. Mir is a godsend! I had a collapsed disc between L5 and S1 due to a work related injury. He saw my x-rays and medical file and immediately diagnosed me with the correct diagnosis (previously all medical professionals diagnosed me with several different diagnoses -all of which the treatments did nothing). So, Dr. Mir was the only dr that correctly diagnosed me. Then, he gave me 3 treatment options. He explained each one in detail and the probable outcomes. I decided on the lumbar fusion with a cadaver bone. It sounds kind of "Frankenstein-ish" but I had full trust and confidence in his abilities. Out of 200 orthopedic surgeons in Southern California that I researched for patient reviews, experience, expertise in available surgery options, and education Dr. Mir was by far the best at it all! I knew God had sent me the best surgeon and he was the best by far! Completely professional and a great staff. Worked hard with my billing in order to get the surgery that I needed. Surgery went perfectly and without problems during or afterwards. I was amazed that after the surgery my muscles did not hurt, then Dr. Mir said, "That's because I didn't cut them, I used a microscope to see where they naturally separated and went in between them." Wow! It's been 3 months and I am healed of the back pain! Pre-surgery it was level 6 to 10 post-surgery it is 0-3 if I'm really doing a lot that day. My workers compensation insurance sent me to Dr.Mir for treating my lower back injury and Hip joint fracture. I checked the reviews online before I see him, most were very in his favor as a Doctor, just one for staff which I do not care about. Although he looks very professional and a big shot in his field, I think he is an insurance oriented Dr not patient oriented. Dr. Mir did not really read or look at my MRIs, all he said is to go take care of my hip first and it was not work related issue(which turned out to be wrong) neglecting the fact that I had tones of issues in my lower back that even has a tear in. He did not even diagnose me or told me what I had and what kind of treatment I needed. He even denied my request for Ibroprofine for my pain telling me it was not good for the hip healing which turned out to be wrong. Dr. Mir decided to send me back to work knowing that my hip injury is still there and I told him that I still have severe pain in my lower back and both legs even my feet radiating from my back but he acted like he did not hear that and insisted that I should go back to work with restrictions and if I wanted I could ask my Hip Dr for a note which will stop me from getting paid by workers comp and he saves them what they pay me. In my opinion, this was an integrity and moral issue. dr. Mir was only worried about his bonus from workers comp not helping his patient or at least try to help. Above all, I had to wait more than two hours to see him in my last useless appointment, he rescheduled it and then changed his mind again and after driving to his long beach office, they told me I have to go back to my original appointment. I insisted to see him due to the fact that I can not even drive. After all, I had to look for another HONEST Dr. For treatment and thank god found one. If you have good insurance that pays well, you should be fine to see him, if not please do not waste your time and find another Dr. because he needs to pay rent for his Fancy office in expensive Long Beach. read more

It's hard to write a review because I did not get great results from my microdiscectomy at L4-5. I was told that it may or may not help with back pain. (I did not have sciatica initially, which has a really high rate of success of going away with this surgery, but back pain is more of a gamble.) My experience at the surgery center was great- from the anesthesiologist to the nurses and other staff. I was taken care of very well, and I ended up with a very small scar. However, a piece of my disc somehow broke off after surgery and caused excruciatingly painful sciatica, and I had to have the same surgery again! Having two surgeries really slowed down my recovery over all. It's hard to tell if it was Dr. Mir's fault or just bad luck with my disc. It's been almost 9 months since the first surgery and 7 months since the second, and I'm still in pain and still not as strong as I was pre-surgery. Regarding Dr Mir, I am not a professional in the medical field, so it's hard to say really how good he is at what he does. But I had been told by many people that he is good. However, his bedside manner is really bad. I felt like he never did a good job answering my questions or discussing my concerns; he would interrupt me a lot and make me feel rather stupid. read more

Over a year and a half ago I developed leg pain which was believed by my primary physician to be sciatic nerve pain and was treated as such. The pain increased over time and along with the pain developed intense tingling in my lower calf and foot. With a high tolerance to pain, working out of town 80% of the time and being stubborn----ok----it was mostly stubbornness, I didn't communicate to my primary doctor that my condition had worsened. Once it got to the point where I had a hard time standing, I finally contacted my doctor who, justifiably, browbeat me for waiting so long, and ordered an MRI which reveled "Severe Right Lateral Stenosis". (Don't be hard on yourself, I had to look it up too). I never in my wildest dreams would have thought that my leg pain could be caused by a disk problem. I didn't have any back pain just leg pain. Even though my doctor referred me to a local neurosurgeon, Dr. Hamid Mir came highly recommended by a medical billing company executive. After my own research of both surgeons, as well as, a couple of others, it became evident to me that Dr. Mir was clearly the best qualified. In my research I discovered that Dr. Mir is authorized to perform surgeries at Hoag Orthopedic Institute which in and of itself speaks volumes about Dr. Mirs talent and professionalism. When I first met Dr. Mir, I found him to be focused, confident and a good communicator. He welcomed my many, many questions and answered them exhaustively. During my first office visit, I was very impressed with how quickly Dr. Mir was able to assess my situation. He informed me of all treatment options with surgery being one of them. My wife and I discussed each option and finally decided on surgery as the best course of action. The surgery I would undergo was right side L5-S1 discectomy, decompression. The surgery took place on November 07, 2013. Dr. Mir told me that the first thing I would notice when I woke up in the recovery room would be that my leg pain would be gone. He was not exaggerating, the pain I had tolerated for over a year was absolutely gone. As of April 24, 2014 I am still in physical therapy but that is about to come to an end because I have completely recovered and regained total mobility. I do not have enough good things to say about Dr. Mir and his staff. I went in after researching for a long time to specifically see Dr. Mir. I had a long term gymnastics injury that had become debilitating. I was having numbness down my leg, and some mornings could not get out of bed. It had taken me out of all the sports and activities that I was doing. When Dr. Mir saw me, I immediately knew that surgery was the best option for me. He carefully explained every aspect carefully and throughly. I knew I was in great hands. My surgery was scheduled just weeks after my initial visit, I met all my other doctors that would be assisting in my Spinal Fusion surgery. I felt extremely comfortable with everything. My recovery was extremely fast, I was up and moving in a matter of days. I had my followup appointments and everything was healing perfectly. For over ten year of worsening radiculopathy pain I had may x-rays, MRI's and seen many doctors. They all somewhat agreed that the pain was caused by some type of compression to the nerve. The location of the compression and the best solution varied from physical therapy to injections to surgery. The consensus of all the surgeons was to replace the discs and fuse my cervical spine. Although I was not apposed to surgery I was not convinced that disc replacement and fusion was best for me and I was never really comfortable with any of surgeons. Last year my new Internist highly recommended I see Dr. Hamid Mir. Dr. Mir looked at my images and knew instantly the problem was C3-4, C4-5 foraminal stenosis. Dr. Mir explained so I could understand why the prior treatment did not work and why he wanted to do a minimally invasive surgery to relive the pressure on the nerve without the replacing the disc and fusing the spine.This all made a lot of sense to me and gave me a great deal of confidence in Dr Mir. Dr. Mir did the surgery and when I woke up ALL the referral pain in my scapula and shoulder were gone and has never come back. I think it takes more than one quality to be a truly great surgeon.
