I am nearly 60 and play competitive tennis at a 4.5 USTA level. I tore my medial meniscus while playing, and Dr. G was able to schedule me for a partial meniscectomy less than 2 weeks later (on 1/29/25). I expected a 4-to-6-week recovery (which Dr. G said is typical), but was back to playing tennis just 5 days after surgery (with Dr. G's authorization) with essentially no discomfort, weakness, swelling or instability. For context, the MRI report characterized my tear as a "horizontal tear involving the entire thickness posterior horn medial meniscus surfacing on the tibial side extending to the adjacent body," with the medial meniscus "extruded underneath bulged MCL." Everyone from the front desk to the surgical team was great. I had a fall and busted up my knee pretty bad. By bad I mean, I couldn't get up for like 10 min. I thought my knee would just get better if I just wore a brace. (I forgot how old I am, so that didn't happen) I had a trip planned so, I went on the trip. I don't think my knee got worse but it definitely didn't get better. When I got back from my trip, I called the Newport Orthopedic Institute and they got me in the same day. I was surprised, I'm not sure if that's the "norm" so that made me happy. I met Dr. Gazzaniga and right away liked his bedside manner. He's kind, to the point and has a good sense of humor. Turned out, I needed surgery asap. His staff got me in for surgery in two days. His surgical center is in the same building as his office. That was awesome. Convenient and close to home. Communication was thorough from beginning to end. Day of surgery, everything went smoothly. EVERYONE from nurses to the anesthesiologist was perfect. Dr G came in to check on me and let me know what he was going to do for surgery, chatted for a little to let me know everything would be fine. I don't remember the name of the anesthesiologist but he was the best, reassuring me that I would be fine and in good hands. Both he and Dr. G explained how I may feel after surgery and what to expect at the surgical site after surgery. Hopefully you never need him but if you do...I would definitely recommend Dr Gazziniga. read more

Care quality and office experience both poor. Quality of care has continued to be misleading, and my doctor has not appeared for any post op appointments. Every appointment I am waiting in the front office for OVER an hour to not see my own surgeon. They left a suture in my leg leading to potential infection that has not yet been addressed 6 weeks after the surgery. It has taken over 6 weeks of calling to request medical record release although forms were filed on the day of surgery for records to be released. My surgeon took over a month to file the operative report, creating delays in my ability to receive physical therapy from my insurance and further impairing my recovery. Outstanding physician, with an ability to clearly present treatment options. I'm an 80 year old male who recently fractured several bones in my right foot. I was referred to Dr Gazzaniga who reviewed my xrays and outlined several options, including surgery as well as careful shepherding of my foot in a simple recovery boot. We chose the boot solution, which has allowed me a good deal of movement while I'm recovering. Dr Gazzaniga is a careful listener, with a great range & depth of professional experience. I was told by Doctor's Gazzaniga office that he can only accept pacients under a certain age. Never heard this before in my life., considering his an Orthopedist and not a Pediatrician. I wanted to have a second opinion on my knee issue after a ski lift fall and even though I'm always told that I'm in great shape and look 20 years younger than my age, due to consistency on my workouts and active lifestyle, this doctor can't have me as a pacient because I'm older than his protocol accepts. I scheduled a second opinion appointment with Dr. Gazzaniga to evaluate my ongoing continuing knee pain, as I was not on board with my first original Ortho Doc's conclusion. And, so glad I did, as Dr. G.'s evaluation was also completely different as to what the first Doctor had said was causing my issues. I feel so grateful for Dr. G's expertise, confidence and kindness in truly wanting to make me feel better, listening and trying to honestly wanting to help me to get back to my normal physical activity level as soon as possible. As an athlete my entire life...I do know what an Orthopedic evaluation should like. I waited 1-1/2 hours to see Dr Gazzaniga which is ok if you get more than a quickie exam. Well I got the 15 minute quickie which is not adequate when evaluating for surgery or developing a treatment plan. He only glanced at my MRI report and looked at 1 scan. When discussing surgery he mentioned my age!!! Totally shocked as they are doing replacements on people 10-20 years older than me. Im very active and in better shape than people half my age. Interestingly enough I noted another reviewer got an "age" comment from this doctor! So he does discriminate! Told him cortisone shots were not working anymore yet that was his recommendation. Also long term use of cortisone injections can cause cartilage damage and death of nearby bone. Today got a second opinion and underwent a full 45 minute exam. They also took additional X-Rays (which show things MRI's don't), and discovered why steroids were not working. Then setup a game plan. Very happy to find a doctor who is interested in helping me regain function and maintain my health goals. Remember no matter what the doctors credentials are...Always get 2nd and 3rd opinions!! Dr. Gazzaniga and the Surgery Center made me feel super comfortable and loved going to my appointments. I was originally referred to a different surgeon in Irvine, but after my first visit I never wanted to return. The surgeon who I shall not name and his office receptionists made me it clear to me that he doesn't like taking HMO patients. So I requested for a second referral, and that's how I found this awesome Newport facility. I'm stoked on the people at this location, it was always easy receiving immediate answers. I never had surgery before so I was nervous and didn't know what to expect. I finally had my ACL reconstruction surgery a few days ago. Dr. Gazzaniga diagnosed and treated (surgery) my knee issue (meniscus tear) and he was great from start to finish. He took his time with me, did not rush me, did not jump to conclusions, and did a great job on the surgery and explaining what he did and why he did it. Dr. Gazzaniga is the best! He is so nice, and very knowledgable. He listens to your concerns, and also makes you feel comfortable to be at the doctor's office. I recently went through my first surgery about two months ago and it was on my hip. I have not visited the practice. I called because I saw Dr. G's reviews. Got a mega voice mail system that had my head spinning from all the options. After several minutes on hold a recording asked me to leave a message which I did. They returned my call and it went straight to my voicemail so I called back and decided to just wait. 8 minutes later a fairly Gruff girl comes on the phone not terrible, professional, a bit rushed, just came off as a bit Gruff just not super sweet or Pleasant, probably due to how slammed they are. I asked her if I was an existing patient and I called in would I have to wait in that same phone cue and she said yes we're a big practice with 27 doctors which was a turn off. Mega voicemail system, 8 Minute hold times, 27 docs, etc. not what I'm looking for. read more

Kindest and most competent surgeon I've ever met who is willing to spend the necessary time to answer question & not pass you off on a PA which is a rarity in this day and age. I first met with Dr Gazzaniga back in 2017 when I developed pain in both shoulders over several trust his recommendations implicitly. He is a nice man but just specialized in Surgery. And I am sure he is a good surgeon. But as soon as he saw my xrays he said that you don't need surgery and he lost interest to find out why I have pain. He wasn't even interested to look at the MRI which I paid a lot to get. I had to ask him to look at it. He didn't give me a straight answer or diagnosis as to what could be the problem. So if you don't have a substantial injury, don't go there. read more

Broke my tibia plateau and tore my ACL off the bone in a simple fall. This, per every professional PT or doctor, was a very difficult injury. Dr. Gazzaniga did a great repair. Later after everything had healed I had a manipulation to break the scar tissue. Although Newport Orthopedics is a large group of doctors, Doctor Gazzaniga always remembers me and specifics of what is going on with my aging body. Although I have arthritis in both knees, Dr. Gazzaniga is prudent with surgery. Most honest surgeons will tell you to put off surgery if you can for about as long as you can. Dr. Gazzaniga has a great bedside manner and takes time to listen. read more

After a torn rotator cuff, I was operated on in August. I was told no golf or tennis for 6 months. While I agree with another reviewer that going in to the office is like an assembly line and quick I am sure Dr.G is busy. he is a nice guy as well. That being said he did a great job diagnosing my torn shoulder labrum and scheduled my surgery pretty quick. He was a surgeon for pro-sports teams so he has probably seen plenty torn of labrums. Took a while for it to heal and i thought a few times something had gone wrong but I stuck with physical therapy and my shoulder is great now....Much better than before. If i have another injury I will definitely see Dr G again. No doubt about it. read more

I was told I needed surgery by Dr. Beyer (from the same medical group) following an MRI on my right knee for a torn lateral meniscus. Not having more than 1 minute to ask him questions before Dr. Beyer left the room to "get the ball rolling" on surgery, I decided to get a second opinion and thankfully chose Dr. Gazzaniga after hearing of his background as being the head surgeon for the New York Jets and Islanders. Very glad I did. I actually got to review the MRI images with Dr. Gazzaniga and he told me that if it was his knee, he wouldn't opt for surgery, and the tear was so minor/microscopic that surgery could actually do more harm than good. Instead he prescribed physical therapy to strengthen the knee. Very pleased with the time he spent to discuss my results and answer my questions thoroughly, and now I have a non-surgical option to recovery. read more
