Oh my gosh, I just took the protective shield off the eye I had done yesterday (the first eye to have the cataracts removed and a new lens put in that replaced my 69-year-old biological lens)...And everything is so crystal clear!!! I mean, I knew I would be able to see at a distance, but I had no idea that colors had become so muted and that -- even with glasses -- things were still "not looking as they really are." I walked into my bathroom and I saw how beautifully blue and bright-white my bathroom rugs and tiles are! Then I walked into the kitchen and saw that there was gorgeous bougainvillea across the street and It was bright-bright purple. Oh my gosh, everything in the house is just so beautifully VIVID AND CRYSTAL CLEARLY DEFINED!!!!! I just can't believe what a drastic change...I mean I don't even remember seeing like this as a child and I had perfect vision!!! It's just everything is crystal clear bright colors. Went to this office to see if I could redo my LASIK procedure since I just turned 40...and my eyesight was reflecting my age. The recommendation was to do RLE surgery instead of LASIK as it would also prevent me from ever having to do cataract surgery. While I imagined the process would have felt like LASIK, and it was a little more intense than I anticipated so I recommend some conscious sedation, my life changed again for the better like it had with LASIK. Everyone was professional and nice. 100% recommend. And btw...having already had LASIK makes these types of surgeries more complicated, so I recommend you go to the best. If I could give more than 5 stars for Dr. Hamilton and his entire team I would! If you're not a candidate for Lasik (I was not), don't be discouraged. There are other alternatives out there like SMILE. This is the procedure I did with Dr. Hamilton. I waited almost two months until I wrote this review to see the true results. About the procedure, was less than 10 minutes for both eyes. Painless and no downtime for recovery. I gave myself the weekend to relax. I was literally able to see the same day of the procedure. There was a lil fogginess as Dr. Hamilton explained but as long as you remain religious with the antibiotic/steroid drops, it will clear up as it did for me. I did see halos at night; however, this also cleared up for me after about 2 weeks. I had preexisting chronic dry eyes. The procedure did not make my dry eyes worse or any better. My dry eyes remain the same. I'm a first time mom and registered nurse. I was so tired of my glasses fogging up, wearing a mask at work, and my baby snatching my glasses off my face. I'm sure others can relate. It's the best investment I've done for myself and my quality of life is so much better. Big shout out to Mayra! This place rips off its customers with their outrageous contact lens "fitting fee." Last year I paid $70, which itself is outrageous. Today I went for my yearly exam, spent about 20 minutes with the doctor, get my prescription and checking out they tell me I owe an additional $150, more than DOUBLE last year. Same lenses, same script, no problems whatsoever. Folks buy their lenses elsewhere so this is a nice little scam for the eye care industry to rob customers of their hard-earned $$$.​ read more

I am a professional pilot, and therefore my eyesight is critical to my career. I am also an attorney, which means I paid a boatload of money to learn how to perform accurate, in-depth research. I spent a lot of hours over the last ten plus years determining what it would mean to get Visian ICL, and whether or not it was safe enough and accurate enough. I also spent a great deal of time researching which surgeon I could trust with such an important procedure. Dr. Hamilton's name came up again and again. My normal eye doctor, also a pilot, recommended him highly and after I realized he was the cream of the crop, I made the appointment. Dr. Hamilton, Mayra, and the rest of the staff listened, made me feel cared for, explained in detail what to expect, took any concerns I had seriously, and gave me all the tools I needed to make a decision. I went ahead with the ICL. The day of the surgery went smoothly, as had all my appointments. The anesthesiologist took the time to speak with me and explain more about what the day would be like. I went in, was sedated, apparently snored so... there's that. And woke up with amazing vision! Of course, right after your eyes are ready to rest and it's not til a bit later that you get to experience the full incredible results, but you can tell right away that you are about to have an extraordinary experience. His price was right in line with what I found online, and more importantly, worth every penny! He wasn't the most expensive but not the least expensive. But you don't want to cheap out on your eyesight! You'll pay the right amount and probably giggle like a school girl for days after, if you are anything like me. As a healthcare provider, I hesitate to leave reviews for medical practices but I feel compelled by the excellent care I am receiving from Dr. Hamilton and his team to share why you should see Dr. Hamilton for eye surgery. I work 12+ hours rotating shifts and my eyes are sensitive and susceptible to seasonal change and dry weather. Prior to surgery, I was constantly using lubricant eye drops at work and purposefully not wearing contact lens on my days off to rest my sore eyes. Today, I am 6 weeks post-op from SMILE surgery and my quality of life has improved for the better. While I was a candidate for Lasik, I was also a candidate for SMILE and after having several consultations with eye surgeons in the Los Angeles area, I was comfortable having Dr. Hamilton perform my surgery. Simply put, Dr. Hamilton is a wizard. He is not only highly skilled, he understands how to operate the VisuMax femtosecond laser well and recognizes the different progression of recovery each patient has. He is the first surgeon on the west coast to perform SMILE surgery and routinely teaches other surgeons how to perform SMILE. Dr. Hamilton is also very kind, easy to talk to, and I knew I was in capable hands. I had a longer course of recovery, as I am dealing with dry eye syndrome (another reason why I opted for SMILE and not LASIK), and my vision is still improving. On post-op day 1 I was seeing 20/20 bilaterally but my left eye regressed to 20/25 two weeks later. My right eye recovered much quicker than my left, and text was blurry in my left for about 3-4 weeks--as it was crystal clear in my right eye. This obviously made me panic even though Dr. Hamilton reassured me that my left eye would eventually catch up. He saw me right away on week 3 and week 4 when I noticed this regression and he did not hesitate to professionally address my concerns - he assessed my eyes, performed corneal topography scans, went over the results in detail with me, and inserted plugs in my eyes. The halos were initially pronounced and then drastically faded over about 30 days - a month and a half later, they are absolutely minimal, especially since he started me on Cequa to help inflammation in my eyes. So far I am very happy with the results and the close communication that I have with him and his team, even though recovery took a bit longer than expected. I also want to thank his generous staff, Mayra and Jasmine. They are exceptionally friendly and accommodating, making me feel comfortable and informed throughout the entire process. I never felt rushed. They patiently answered all of my questions and addressed any concerns I had, which greatly eased any pre-surgery anxiety. Mayra was present with me through the day of surgery. She has a wealth of experience caring for surgical patients and she treated me like family. Long story short, I had an initial consult and Dr Hamilton pushed SMILE. I called him later as a follow up to ask if he would consider doing LASIK given several factors specific to my situation. He said Absolutely and to come for a second appointment (cost is $500) to discuss further and decide on the right surgery. I paid $500 for the 2nd appt because I felt he was the right choice. However, during the second visit they tried to get me to pay $4,500 to lock down a promotional rate before I had even finalized the discussion with Dr H on what the right surgery was. When I asked about financing they started treating me differently and dismissing any discounts if I use financing. I felt the treatment turned disparate as soon as I brought up financing and felt pressured to book a surgery date asap. I know this business is about making money, but was shocked at how ugly the entire situation turned out and decided not to proceed with the surgery even though I paid $500 for the second visit (only thing they did different for pre-op was dilate). Since I'm so nearsighted (RX is about a -10 in glasses), I'm not a candidate for more well known surgeries such as LASIK, PRK, and Smile. The option I had available to me was Visian ICL. As it's not as common of a procedure, I wanted to make sure I was getting it done by the very best. My ophthalmologist, who knows Dr. Hamilton from his days at UCLA, basically said that if she were to get Visian ICL, she'd only go to him. The procedure itself was easy peasy. I felt nothing and I honestly don't remember most of it (I was under IV sedation)! It took a day for the dilation to wear off. My vision was perfect by day 2-3. I also had minor headaches and minor sensitivity to light that went away after a few days. Finally, getting corrective vision surgery is a dream come true for me and I'm so thankful that I met Dr. Hamilton!!! He is detailed in his work and has a relaxed and upbeat disposition. I would like to say that Dr. Rex Hamilton has changed my life completely and improved my quality of life so so much! I had so many vision issues since I was a child and I was a fairly complicated case. I had a VERY high Rx, vision that could not be corrected completely with both glasses or RGB contacts. I had toric ICL lens implants in both eyes and LASEK in my left eye. It been several months since I had surgery and I don't have any complications. My eyes caused me frequent eye pain, severe migraines, poor vision, vertigo, nausea etc. I found working and driving difficult. It greatly affected my quality of life and I even had to shut down my plans of getting into medicine myself. As soon as my vision FINALLY stabilized in my 20s I knew I wanted to get surgery. I was turned down by the world renowned UCLA Jules Stein Eye Institute. They said I was such a difficult case ONLY Dr. Rex Hamilton could operate on me. They stated they got absolutely no referral fees etc from him but that he had a stellar reputation and was able to operate on difficult cases. I immediately looked him up and did my research and was impressed with his qualifications and experience. I booked my surgeries with him at the Santa Monica Eye Group. The surgeries were spaced out over a couple months. The left eye required LASEK even after the toric ICL surgery (included in the fees) , but that was not a particular surprise to me since that eye had been causing me grief all my life. The toric surgeries were done in a Beverly Hills surgical suite, the LASEK was done at UCLA. They explained everything clearly to me, notified me of possible complications, the likelihood of me developing early cataracts (likely to occur anyway due to my high Rx). I have a bit of a medical background and I was impressed with the professionalism & experience of everybody. After surgery I've never had such good vision my entire life! I've had no complications, no pain at all for the surgeries. All the staff was amazing, knowledgeable and there were frequent checkups to check up on my progress. Since the surgeries things are going amazing for me! For the first time in years I have absolutely no eye pain! My eyes used to hurt so bad I would vomit from the pain, this would happen as often as several times a day, it was that serious. I met Dr Hamilton about 14 years ago. At that time he was Head of Lasik at Jules Stein Eye Institute. He had just graduated in 1994. So he was already the best in his field. I told him I did not want the Lasik mono vision. He said he was working on a Cornea lens implant. My eyes were that of a middled aged man, but my pupils were that of a seven year old as they opened so wide. So he and his team came up with a lens just for me. The procedure was very quick and simple. For the first time in my life could see without wearing glasses. It was really a spritual moment of joy. I just had Dr. Hamilton perform SMILE surgery for vision correction in April of this year (2021) and I would recommend his practice for anyone in the Los Angeles area who is thinking about corrective eye surgery. I first learned of Dr. Hamilton when I was a student at UCLA and he was the director of the UCLA Laser Refractive Center. Since then, he's moved to a private practice just down the street and gets to focus more on performing surgeries. He takes the time to make sure you understand the different options available to you, answers every question you have to make sure you're comfortable with your decision, and walks you through the surgery that only takes a few minutes from start to finish. I had my appointment on a Monday afternoon and was back at work in the office Tuesday morning. There was a slight blurriness the first few days but my vision completely corrected to 20/20 in about a week. Some eye dryness and sensitivity to sunlight lasted for about a month but it's nothing a pair of sunglasses and some eye drops can't easily take care of. It's been almost 2 months and I can't thank Dr. Hamilton enough for an awesome job! Dr. Hamilton did not offer me the famous LASIK or the newer SMILE even though other surgeons did. He felt that PRK was the best option for my particular case, even though it automatically meant more checkups to monitor my progress. PRK Dr. Hamilton suggested, so PRK I got, along with a customized medication plan to accommodate an allergy. (An unusual allergy which most doctors ignore--I like breathing, thank you.) Dr. Hamilton and his equally exacting optometrist Dr. Roxana Khorrami were unstinting with their time. I reported dry eye, and they told me to come in and have it treated. When I told them my dry eye was better, they had me schedule another checkup just to doubly make sure everything was fine. I noticed my vision started fading almost a year ago. I went to my trusty optometrist who thought I might be suffering from cataracts. He recommended I go visit the Santa Monica Eye Medical Group as he said his other patients had had good results there. I scheduled my consultation with Dr. Hamilton. The wait was a little long (it's a doctor's office so that's expected I suppose) but Dr. Hamilton was very professional and nice and explained all of the steps involved with getting cataract surgery very well. Both of my surgeries went flawlessly. Dr. Hamilton is clearly highly adept at what he does and I'd trust him if I ever needed another surgery done for my eyes. My only complaint is that my medications got a bit messed up, but I'm not sure if thats the fault of the pharmacy or Santa Monica Eye Medical Group. I had my cataract surgery done almost three years ago. I am doing an update on where I am right now. I love Dr. Hamilton and so glad that I got the Toric lenses. It really has helped my every day life seeing more easily. It takes awhile getting use to driving at night because there are halos around lights. My eyes do water more when wind hits my eye, but that might have been because of my oil glands were clogged up. I also have had very dry eyes and for years sought to get several doctors to find what was wrong. It isn't the lenses. I finally found a doctor, Dr. Michael Regan in Camarillo who does a meiobian gland expression and this has been a game changer for me. It is a simple procedure and my eyes are normal now. I highly recommend this treatment. I think for the Doctors who perform this procedure should specify that with these lenses your eyesight will be much better but you will still need glasses for dim reading and-smaller print. My night driving I have pretty near perfect sight. I highly recommend Dr. Hamilton, he is truly a gifted Doctor! read more

Dr. David Rex Hamilton was part of a group recommended by my physician for cataracts. Looking into it, I saw that he had left that group and that his office was now at SM Blvd. near Westwood Blvd., about 5 min. from where I live. His office is easy to get to with easy parking. And not in one of those typical high rises with intimidating, underground parking. Dr. Hamilton is kind and positive. He inspires confidence and is calm, professional, and in no way, arrogant. He discusses procedures in a comfortable way. (For myself, maybe a bit squeamish, I didn't need a lot of real graphic description or photos. :) But am sure he would professionally explain ALL that anyone would want or need to know. He also did glaucoma procedures during the 2 cataract surgeries I had. Specialty Surgical Center, on Wilshire, where the surgeries took place was very good. And so was Encore Pharmacy, who did the eye drops. His office staff is excellent, none of that snipey, phone service one can occasionally encounter. I mentioned this to him. While he was at UCLA Jules Stein Institute he performed my cataract surgery absolutely to perfection and was incredibly patient, kind and informative. I chose Dr. Hamilton to do my LASIK procedure 10 years ago and am extremely happy with my results. My vision is still crystal clear and I have had no issues whatsoever. Best decision I ever made, and I can enjoy all outdoor activities from early morning to late night with no worries about contact lenses or glasses. I've been seeing an optometrist regularly for follow up visits but thought I'd check in again with Dr. Hamilton. His new office is in a great location with easy parking (hard to find in West LA) right out front. When Dr. Hamilton was at Jules Stein, he did my cataracts. It was a painless and almost carefree experience. My eyesight is great and I have no complaints at all. I then found out that he left UCLA and instead of finding someone else, I decided to continue with him. He's now in private practice and I went yesterday for my yearly check up. The staff was efficient and kind and when I saw him, he seemed very pleased to see me. I received the impression that Dr. Hamilton wants to be one of those doctors that you are "faithful" to because he knows you and whatever problems you may have with your eyes. The old-fashioned family doctor type -- not just a cog in a huge medical machine. Anyhow, I realize this is hardly an eloquent review, but I most wholeheartedly recommend Dr Hamilton. read more

I received SMILE surgery with Dr. Hamilton back in May '21 to correct my vision. It has been almost 3 months since the surgery and I have recovered well. I always tell friends & family - I honestly can't believe I didn't get the surgery earlier. It has been such a blessing, not having to worry about bringing my glasses/ putting on contacts on everyday. The surgery itself went so smoothly -- the procedure itself takes less than 5 minutes, Dr. Hamilton is a PRO. The recovery has also been great, I wanted to wait a few months so I could share an honest review. In the week or so after the surgery, my vision was just a little bit foggy. This did not impact work or life at all, I went back to work the weekend after and exercised as normal. Now it's almost been 3 months, I have a tiny bit of dry eye in the morning, easily fixed by some drops and I don't feel it at all by the afternoon -- all of this is to be expected and the dry eye has gotten better and better as time passes.
