I cannot recommend this practice based on my experience. During my last visit, the physician did not perform an eye examination. A technician performed retinal imaging and a vision test and told me there were no changes from my previous visit, when I had been examined by a reputable retina specialist who no longer works at this practice. I was not examined by the physician, Dr. Benjamin, who was on site that day. Afterward, I obtained my medical record and found multiple diagnoses that are incorrect and would require an eye examination to diagnose. The chart also documented symptoms and conditions that I did not have. What alarmed me most was that I was provided with a tear duct scan that did not belong to me. The scan was timestamped after I had already left the office, and the patient's name appeared to be handwritten rather than printed by the imaging system. This raised serious concerns for me about the practice's recordkeeping, patient privacy, and the accuracy of my own medical record. The practice also refuses to produce the native imaging with patient PII embedded in the images. read more

Avoid at all costs. Inaccurate, snake oil salesman Dr Benjamin tried to get me to do an expensive and unnecessary cataract procedure. He looked at the results and tried to convince me to pay $15000+ for an unnecessary surgery. He even had a non-medical patient therapist on hand to help me decide and schedule it. He had availability less than a week from my appointment (which is a huge red flag. Good doctors are booked months out). I first came to Benjamin Eye Institute for a routine vision and eye health check, and I was very impressed by how welcoming and professional everyone was. My review of LASIK after one year I told Dr. Benjamin I would do this a while ago, but I kind of feel like it says a lot I have kept this on my checklist for a year. I feel like a year is a good amount of time to review a procedure like this and give my honest thoughts and recommendation. So, let me tell you about my journey to getting LASIK and how I ended up in the amazing care of Dr. Benjamin. After going to an optometrist for years and him advising against LASIK because of my genetically dry eyes, I finally got a second opinion from an ophthalmologist (Dr. Benjamin). I didn't know the difference between an optometrist vs. opthalmologist, but once I learned it kind of made sense why my optometrist didn't want me getting LASIK lol. Because he couldn't sell me on contact lenses or glasses for the foreseeable future if I got my vision corrected :) I mean, who knows, but I am glad I got a second opinion. I figured being in Los Angeles with some of the best doctors in the world... if anyone is going to touch my big, blue eyeballs, might as well get it done while I'm here. I found this business due to the reviews and they seemed to really know what they were doing and how to talk to clients. Upon meeting Dr. Benjamin he told me that I wasn't a candidate for LASIK with my dry eyes, but he could put me through treatments for dry eyes and reevaluate after; and that these treatments had a good success rate for most. So, I started doing two treatments every other week for about 2.5 months - IPL laser treatment and Lipiflow. Lipiflow, especially, was a weird painless experience but highly recommend anyone with dry eyes to ask about it regardless of LASIK. I could tell my eyes felt way less dry a couple days after each treatment. There are videos on YouTube that talk about this treatment... Who knew this stuff existed. I'm not gonna lie, it's an investment to do all these treatments on top of LASIK, but my eyes rarely feel dry anymore so if you're going to get it done - do it right. Finally, I was approved for LASIK. I ended up waiting until the end of year to make sure I saved up the funds to do it and had some time to heal. I also took advantage of an end of year deal they were offering. $1000 off was a pretty nice forcing function to get me to finally do it after prepping my eyes with the treatments. The procedure itself I couldn't feel anything even though I was awake the entire time (medicated). Even the scary part when bubbles form on your eyes Dr. Benjamin let me know about in advance so when it happened I just went with the flow. I think the worst part was the recovery the few days after and coming home drugged up lol. I remember day 1 thinking omg what did I do to my eyes. My eyes just hurt and felt weird, but omg I could see 20/15 immediately. And then, day by day it gradually got better. It took a few weeks for my eyes to heal, but after 1 month you couldn't even tell I had surgery. One eye was a bit more bloodshot than the other. I can see 20/15. It's been life changing for the past year not having to worry about contacts or glasses. I just got married and was able to walk down the aisle with clear vision. I only wish I had the means to have done this earlier in life. If you're considering it - do it! And definitely consider Dr. Benjamin to do it right. Lastly, to continue treating my dry eyes, Dr. Benjamin gave me an extra LipiFlow treatment, and also recommended I try punctal plugs (painless plugs inserted into your lids that help your tears last longer). He placed the plugs in my eyes under 5 mins. Wild. I heard from people during the LASIK process they have been nervous to get the procedure so I wrote this to help and because I think highly of this business for changing my life. And, some of the dry eye treatments I would've never known about had it not been for them. Again, I wish I would have had been able to do this years ago. It is so, so worth it! The Benjamin Eye Institute is an in-network provider through my PPO, I verified it on UnitedHealthcare's website before scheduling my appointment in November. When I walked into the appointment after sitting down at the retinal scanner I asked, is this extra? The medical assistant said no, I said great, please let me know if something is extra and she said of course. The Dr. was in for only a few minutes and then told me that I should consider artificial tear ducts due to my eyes being dry and laser to clean up the old veins that had been created to get oxygen from too much contact lens wearing in my past. He then referred someone into the room to discuss a laser option for $5,000 dollars to get rid of the old no longer used veins--of course not covered by insurance. I said not right now, but thank you. Upon checking out at the appointment I ended up with $652 as the amount due. I literally couldn't afford the whole amount, so the receptionist allowed me to pay $152.91 of the balance and she said when can you pay the remainder. My office co-pay is $60. How does an in-network provider cost a patient for a contact and eye exam to the amount of $592? There's no contact lenses, frames, or lenses in that amount. On December 21, I went to LensCrafters with my VSP and walked out with an eye exam, AVP Progressive Lenses w/Transitions, and a 6-month supply of multi-focal for Astigmatism contact lenses for a total of $730. I feel the Benjamin Eye Institute was just trying to sell me expenses services and see no value in the appointment I had. read more

Dr and his staff sayeverything is covered to get the surgery and procedures. Second year this happened to me. Last year they said my procedure was fully covered by my insurance. I ended up having to pay them a lot of money out of pocket. I gave them the benefit and I thought it was a random mistake on their end. This year I asked 3 times if something was covered because they kept pushing me to do the surgery. They said it was 100 %per covered. They said they even called and checked with my insurance. My insurance said there was no inquiry. They say whatever to get you to do the surgery. I I asked them to discount the bill and they gave me a minor discount. This is the worst Dr. I have ever been to in my 50 years of life! At check in I was told how much my appt would be, then I was told - If I needed another type of exam I would be told before it was performed so I could okay it. I was never told but I was charged $70 additional for it, I still don't know what it was or why I "needed" it. The procedure I made the appointment for was for a diabetic eye exam. After the assistants performed the exam, the Dr. came in, spent 5 minutes with me, he did not give me much information, said a lot of really big words I did not know and left, sent in another woman who then tried to sell me a $3000 package of treatments to "fix" my eyes but of course, eventually I would need more treatments. I was so upset and felt like a number, not cared for at all. When I asked for my diagnosis paper work I was told I could not have that for 10 days! I had to sign up for a patient portal and wait. I was never given any prescriptions or told to take any medicine. Eye drops & hot compresses were my option or $3000, or as low as $300 and something...I finally got past my 10 days and signed on to the portal! Boy was I shocked to see all of these things wrong with my eyes!! Glaucoma Suspect, Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, Dry Eye, Blepharitis, Floaters, Rosacea!! I don't have any floaters, and to my knowledge I don't have Rosacea - Google says some of this stuff needs antibiotics! Paragraph after Paragraph this Doctor said he counseled me on all of these things - He must be a fast talker because he literally spent 5 mins with me. I'll be getting a 2nd opinion and be more careful of my next choice in eye doctors. I recommend you do the same, readers! Hopefully my endocrinologist can explain some of this to me. I should have gone to UCLA! "Diabetic diets, regular exercise, stopping smoking, and regular check ups with primary care doctor or endocrinologist are very important. After counseling the patient, we decided on the following plan: Diabetic Control and Observation" This statement made me so mad! My Diabetes is under complete control! My A1-C is 6.5, I see my Endo Dr every 3 months for weight loss care - and take Insulin and eat healthy & clean food and I have recently lost 40 lbs and go to the gym 2-3 x's a week and walk almost daily, and I have not smoked in 2.5 years! Dr. Benjamin is a very smart doctor. No doubt he is skilled. But so are many doctors. If, however, bedside manner is remotely important to you, he will not be a good match. After he diagnosed both my glaucoma and cataract issues he wanted to perform surgery, but passed me over to his surgical assistant to discuss details. She quickly told me the sum and then walked away. Both insisted my insurance would never cover it. I then emailed him, saying it never hurts to ask. But after I explained my insurance company needed the specific codes for each procedure, his staff refused to provide them. Dr. Benjamin was forced to write a detailed email and then advised me he had never done that before and that I should look elsewhere for a doctor I would find more amenable. But then Dr. Benjamin's office played delaying games releasing my medical records. What could and should have taken about 10 minutes took months, even when my own primary care doctor got involved (they hung up on him). I found a different doctor who does not act as if he is God. My insurance covered the procedures and I had my surgeries. There's no need to put up with this kind of treatment. read more

I have been considering cataract surgery for some time now. I finally saw Dr. Benjamin to do the procedure. We did the tests, and then the Dr. came in . I said I wanted the laser surgery, maybe correct my astigmatism. He came in, said I could basically have it all done, but did Not go over each procedure step by step. He didnt say how he would address my astigmatism, or my glaucoma. Basically, he came in, said he could do it all, and then turned me over to his staff to go over billing. At this point , his staff went over pricing . They told me my insurance would Not cover laser cataract surgery, so my cost would be 2,500.00 per eye. They also said my insurance would not cover the astigmatism or the glaucoma procedure. in other words, the office staff told me I would have to pay for everything out of pocket. They said there was no reason to submit to my insurance because they knew nothing would be covered. I kept telling them that my insurance had told me, once I reach my out of pocket limit, they would cover everything at 100 per cent. And yet, the office would not even submit the codes until I got angry and told them to forget the whole thing. They then changed their tune and promised to submit the request to my insurance, and they would contact me when they heard back. I waited and waited to hear back from them. Finally , I called my insurance company ,and they told me that they approved most of the procedures two months ago! The only one they wouldnt cover , they said could be appealed by the Dr. Dr. Benjamin's office never followed up. They never informed me that my insurance approved the surgery, they never set up a date for surgery. They did NOTHING! As a result, I now have to wait another year to have the surgery. My first time ever driving 45 minutes in l.a traffic for a doctor's vvisit but his website assured confidence and he seems to be in to the care of the eyes. I have dry eye and I thought he will be the best person to help me The office is absolutely beautiful. The reception ladies are fantastic and patient. The nurse assistant (I think that's what she called) she was very gentle she explain each machine well to prepare me for the doctor.. i watch a video concerning dry eyes. And at this office you actually see the doctor. He's very patient , explains to you everything and it's no rush here. He looked over my chart and images. He explain to me whats going on with my eyes and He gave me some options but he suggested a treatment which sounds scarier than what it is. It was temporary eye plugs. I was frightened. I asked about how long will it take , is it painful, will I have black eyes , can i still wear make-up , do i have to take off work and etc.. doctors answer was NO to every question and he said it will take about 15 seconds I was at okay! He also suggested I use a oil-based drops for my dry eyes. He sprayed a samle in my eyes and it was instant relief. I decided that I want to give it a try and he said well If you like I can have the girls in the front check insurance and see about all that other stuff and you can let me know if you want to do it or not it's no pressure. He's not only nice, kind and considerate he's easy on the eyes too So overall I did get the plugs my eyes are feeling instantly better and I'll see him in two weeks to give him a update read more

What a wonderful and unexpected experience. Today I saw Dr. Benjamin for some eye trouble and was surprised at the office efficiency, the many languages spoken by the staff, their friendly demeanor, and most importantly --Dr. Benjamin's knowledge and patience. Once I booked the appointment I expected a nice office given Dr Benjamin's location on Sunset across from the Soho House. But when I opened the door and found a very large area with many treatment rooms, a wonderful waiting area, and a high end boutique for eye glasses I was more impressed with the facilities. In addition, the office had lots of technology at the front desk to aid check in and in the treatment area where your eyes are examined. What I found most surprising and what will bring me back was the amount of time Dr. Benjamin dedicated to solving my problems. He went through all the images with my, diagnosed my issue, and told me all the options and their costs. Not many doctors do this these days. And one does not want to shop around for some cheap ophthalmologist. One wants the best, and the best are usually very busy. Dr Benjamin's office was busy, but he clearly makes sure that he spends the right amount of time with the patient. I'd note that while I waited before seeing the doctor and while paying on my way out, Dr Benjamin often popped into the waiting room to make sure there were no problems or to just say hello to his patients. read more

What an experience I was distilled for corrected vision.. but I was sharply let down by terrible customer engagement past the front desk.. absolutely paltry experience in every way; from the clinician lying to me stating that she had to legally take my photograph, then complaining when I called her out about it and showed her the law.. The doctor who came after 1.5 hours acted like a purely without cough. He was incredibly short and aggressive in his answers, after making me wait for an hour and a half to discuss getting the procedure... to them talking as I'm walking out of his office. I have been hopping around between 3 eye doctors in the last few years complaining of severe eye pain, redness - so bad I haven't been able to wear contacts for a year. Every other doctor made a diagnosis in 2 minutes, prescribed a few things and sent me on my way. Nothing helped and the doctors kept saying my eyes looked fine despite my symptoms. Finally I saw Dr. Benjamin, and he listened to my concerns from top to bottom and did tests the other doctors never did! He made a brand new diagnosis which finally makes sense and fits my symptoms. Dr. Benjamin is eye smart. Dr. Benjamin really knows his stuffs in terms of LASIK and Meibomian Gland Structural Changes and its surface illumination view of the meibomian glands. The result of the cataract surgery turned out to be successful. I see better at night. The biggest improvement is that I can see objects more clearly in a deeply-lit atmosphere. Now I can see the world in brighter ways literally speaking. That's a huge change that definitely satisfying result. It's not as gray as it used to. I've been a patient of Dr Benjamin's for several years now. There are many things about his practice that I like: his office, which I think is actually the bridge of a spaceship from the year 2025 (welcome aboard the USS Eyeball!); his front-desk folks, who are friendly and efficient and always greet me with a smile; and his medical staff, who are the most helpful and nice Russian supermodels I've ever met. But most of all, I like Dr. B. He's a gregarious, friendly, super-knowledgeable doctor who has a great sense of humor, and perhaps most importantly: he's patient. He explains everything fully and clearly and answers all of my questions without making me feel rushed or unimportant. In my experience that's mighty unusual with most doctors... !! So here are three quick stories about my visits to Benjamin Eye Institute. 1. Generally speaking, I like so much that Dr Benjamin embraces technology. His office is all tricked out and you sign consent forms on iPads. All the recordkeeping is electronic. They have an online patient portal that I can log into for appointments and to access my files. When I had an issue with my eye, as soon as the doctor figured out what was going on, he turned to the computer right there in the exam room and punched up a video that helped me understand what was going on-- and then he also emailed me the video so I could watch it again at home. (Cool!) The doctor himself has invited me to email him directly. All of this is great, and tells me that this is a professional who is interested in the latest technology and equipment to deliver great care. 2. A couple of months ago my eyeball pressure was a little above normal, which could be an early indicator of glaucoma (scary!). The doctor said he wanted to re-check my eyeball pressure using this crazy high-tech machine that measures eye pressure by watching your brain waves and reading your thoughts. (Or something like that. Check out the photo below... it's pretty wild, the sensors were on the back of my head and on my forehead and under my eyes, and it really did measure my brain waves. Normally for this sort of setup I have to go to Scientology and they want to charge me extra for thetan removal, but I digress.) I was pleased to find out that Dr Benjamin is one of the few doctors in L.A. to have this special (and apparently very new) machine. It's super reassuring to know that my eye doctor is using the latest-latest technology-- it's because of this new machine that we could accurately measure my eye pressure and learn that everything is okay, it doesn't look like glaucoma and I should be fine. PHEW, THANK GOD!!!! And I think: if I had been a patient of another doctor that didn't have this fancy new machine, would I still be wondering today if my eyes will be okay? 3. Finally, this morning I woke up with something weird going on inside my eyelid... it was scratchy and unpleasant and I was concerned that it could be messing around with my eyeball. (Hey, I only have a couple of 'em so I'm very protective!) I called the office at 8:30am and explained the situation and they said they could get me in right away for the doctor to see me... yay for being flexible and allowing me to come in for an emergency visit. As always, Dr B was able to treat the situation and helped put me at ease. Bottom line, I think Dr Benjamin is one of the best eye doctors in Los Angeles, certainly with the most up-to-date equipment, and the whole team in the office is universally terrific. I feel like my vision is in good hands with him and wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to others. read more

I wrote my first review when I was angry and being impatient. I had a long wait that day and in the end I was too harsh in my initial review. Yes, it took a long time that day, however... The doctor is really good. Dr. Benjamin knows what he is doing, and when I see him, he seems to genuinely care about my eyes. He's busy, but he remembered me and my treatment. His staff is great as well, and helped me with that pressure test I can never sit still for. So yes...I wrote a harsh review of a busy doctor's office, but in the end I can't fault a great doctor because the word is out that he's great and people want to see him. I've done my research, I don't think I want anyone else shooting lasers into my eyes. Pro-Tip: appointments toward the end of the day we're much quicker and the office was far less busy. read more
