As we were finishing our drinks, the staff informed us of the basement lounge seating. When we headed down, we were pleasantly surprised by the moody speakeasy feel and could see ourselves coming back on another day to relax in that space. It's been on our list, so we tried it last Saturday. We were greeted and seated promptly. The seats and tables are comfortable. There is a bar area with a flat screen TV set, and there was a good crowd at the bar when we arrived. Our server passed out the menus, which took a minute to take in. Do we go with a cocktail, or wine? We decided to go with red wine. For the wine, we went with two different glasses (one for each, but we shared). My wife went with the A & D Merlot, which was very bright with a surprisingly smooth finish. I went for the Ivory & Burt Cabernet, which was a good cabernet. The charcuterie is named, so we went with The Frank. It came with a good selection of sausages, cheeses, and mustard, along with dried blueberries, dried plums, and crackers. The selection and flavors worked well with the red wines we had selected, and the wines did a nice job of clearing the palate before we dove in on another cheese or sausage. I noticed they had a wine club - you can sign up for $35 a month (month by month charge, cancel anytime). If you are a wine club member, you get 20% off your purchases. We joined on the spot, got 20% off our ticket, and the two bottles of wine from this month. This isn't your usual DeKalb bar. This is a nice place with solid service. The art on the walls in some cases is for sale, and the owner's personally curated wines for sale are stocked on the back wall. We wrapped up with desserts - my wife had their Chocolate Mousse, and I had their Strawberry Cheesecake - these are served in small glasses, and are just perfect for finishing up. If you are looking for an interesting place to visit, this is a place you NEED to visit.

We sat at the bar and the one bartender tried his best to keep up with the drink orders for the whole restaurant & the bar patrons drink & food orders. As we approached a wait of 1 hour & 35 minutes, we asked the bartender to have the meals placed in to go boxes. 10 more minutes go by without our meals and we asked to speak to a member of management. What was concerning was the restaurant manager on duty only came out when we requested to speak with a manager. In a calm tone, asked the manager on duty if a 1 hr 45 minute wait for our meals was reasonable. He tried to tell us that they were very busy and the kitchen was behind. Agreed. When asked if we should pay for a meal that was severely delayed he agreed the wait was excessive and he would cover the cost of the meal. I appreciate this reaction from the manager on duty. Unfortunately, when we took our meals to go, we didn't have a good experience with the meals. Received one chicken breast grilled and one breaded for the Portofino Pollo dish. Looked like they grabbed what was up at the time in the kitchen and placed it in the to go containers. Flavors were bland, likely a result of being rushed after a 1 hr 45 min wait. This might be coincidental but being short staffed at the Compton Hills location when they are opening a new location in Geneva is probably what led to the severe delays from the kitchen in servicing meals. Hope the opening of the Geneva location doesn't adversely impact the Campton Hills location beyond our dining visit experience. I gave a rating of 2 as the Manager on Duty did agree to cover the meal cost. The bartender tried to keep us from leaving by offering us a drink on the house to stay after we asked for the meals to be placed in to go boxes to take home at that point versus staying and dining. Proactive customer support would've helped versus a reactive attempt of customer support. Didn't penalize the bartender and provided a cash tip since the kitchen's delay was not his fault. Let's hope Portofino Trattoria does better in the future.
