This hotel was irreparably bad, though not much worse than you would expect for a hotel at this price point. Its location is bizarre (on a road that barely is a road), and I felt the bed was lumpy. The shower was peeling in places, the carpet was stained, the walls were thin, and the cleaning service was unresponsive. The elevator was broken for a night, and the signage that was on it even when it was functioning was very unnerving. Pros: cheap, not terrible, spacious room, very kind front desk staff. There are nicer, newer hotels in El Centro but the price point is unreasonable; if it's just for a night or two, you couldn't do wrong here (unless you died in an elevator crash, of course). read more

Checked in and was given our room keys. Walking to our room, I noticed the hotel smelled a little musty and looked a little worn down but no biggie since we're only staying one night. We get to our room and open it via the card key, AND THE ROOM IS OCCUPIED. The tv is on, clothes all over the floor. We quickly closed the door and returned to the front desk where they apologized and we were given new room keys. With the new keys in hand, we go to the second floor and attempt to open the door to our new room. We try and try and try but the lock won't open, the light doesn't even turn on to say the key has failed. So we go back downstairs to return to the front desk once again to let them know that this door doesn't even open, let alone have guest in it. To which they said, "yeah we forgot that that door is broken." We then get a THIRD set of keys after returning to the front desk for a 3rd time. Finally, we are able to get into a room. The room smells even mustier than the halls. I also found a piece of CHEWED GUM sitting right on top of the nightstand table. How does someone miss that? There was a little card in our room that said it was cleaned by "Miriam" but clearly it wasn't cleaned at all. Shower also looked dirty and paint was chipping off like crazy. In the AM, we let the concierge know about the gum and the check in fiasco and all she said was "sorry, I'll have to tell my manager." Anyways, two stars instead of one because at least the sheets were clean looking, no bed bugs, and the AC was nice and cold. I would not recommend staying here if you can help it. read more

This is the worst holiday inn we have ever stayed at. Upon checking in front desk asked if I was okay with the 3rd floor and I said sure not knowing what was in store. As you walk out of the elevator you are welcomed by all the renovations that are not even closed off. Our bed were decent but the bathroom tub was disgustingly dirty so I had to lay down a towel on the floor. I asked the front desk to have them clean our room and we came back with it exactly the same. The hotel smells moldy as soon as you walk in. Everything is stained in the room from the carpets to the window curtains. We will never stay here again. This is the worst holiday inn we have ever stayed at. read more

My partner and I have stayed here on two ocassions. It is by no means a fancy hotel of course. The place is outdated and the smell of farmland is strong both outside and inside the building. There are 3 floors and a small elevator that works fine but hasn't been inspected in a couple years according to the documents posted. The rooms are relatively clean and the amenities are decent (Dove shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand soap bar). Our bathroom had two shampoo containers and no conditioner unfortunately. The towels were clean but many had stains. Our bathtub was worn but the water pressure and temperature was good. The king bed was comfortable and clean and our standard room had a refrigerator and a microwave. The complimentary breakfast is pretty good. There is coffee, tea, milk, and juice. Bread, bagels, muffins are available next to a pancake machine that I have never tried. There were pre-made omelettes, sausages, biscuits/gravy, and oatmeal. I liked how they had hardboiled eggs available because I wasn't a fan of the salty omelettes and were not made with fresh eggs. They also have a few cereal options, Chobani and Danimal yogurts, and bananas and apples. Overall, a good option in Calexico. There is plenty of parking in the lot. The front desk workers are fluent in English and Spanish. You can expect to pay about $125/night. read more

Decent for Calexico outside the Mexicali border. Staff was very kind and helpful. Lots of storage - a closet, a wardrobe, and metal hanging areas. Blackout shades are nice. The carpet was very dirty and I agree with other patrons, why charge me a $100 deposit on top of my room charge? Need to clean and replace the carpet stat. Fitness center was closed. Coffee and breakfast were not great, small cups and small snacks, but the fridge in the room was a good size if you wanted to shop and bring in water or drinks. Vending machines are also available. The tub wasn't very clean, and there were 2 body washes, no shampoo. Bed was hard, pillows were ok - you get soft and firm. TV didn't work. read more

Arrived at 8pm to the hotel. The elevator up to the room is ancient and extremely slow. It smelled like mildew upon walking through the hotel. Stains all over the hotel carpet. Now lets talk about the room, the horrid smell continued in the room. Found several long female hairs on the bath towels. Black mold spots all over the shower. The place is unsanitary and I am surprised the Ihg corporate allows this franchise to operate. I highly recommend you find another location. read more

Truth be told kindness is everything. The staff at this hotel goes above and beyond for its guest. I was having a long day and specifically Ricardo and Jennifer knew how to make the day better. It was a joy to be in the presence of truly kind souls. The hotel follows guidelines to make guest fill safe during the pandemic as well which is really important. If you are staying in a hotel and looking for not just a night of sleep but people who truly care about the guest happiness stop by this hotel. This is without a doubt the most disgusting Holiday Inn Express we have ever stayed in. The entire property smells like mildew and manure. The outdoor pool area, pool, pool chairs and jacuzzi is DISGUSTING. The jacuzzi is also broken! The washer and dryer is broken! The gym is closed. The breakfast area is closed. The tv in the room is the size of a regular computer screen! LOL On top of it all they have the audacity to charge you a $100 deposit! For Calexico - this hotel earns four stars. On the plus side are clean comfortable modernly appointed rooms (we got a nice sized two room suite for - compared to hotels in L.A. or San Diego - about nothing), and very friendly efficient service. Like the divan in the suite living room and the foot stool like cushioned benches in both the bedroom and living room. The free hot breakfast downstairs is actually quite good and served by a very friendly efficient server named Carmen. The minus are - the dated small single elevator that can take a bit of time to reach you even though it has only three floors to travel, the small sparsely equipped fitness facility (one "machine" for leg extensions, some light dumbbells, couple yoga pads and foam roller, an exercise ball, two treadmills and a recumbent bike), and the small (seem to be only 32") flat screen TVs in the suite that look out of place as in disproportionately small mounted on the walls. In all though, probably the nicest place to stay in Calexico and on par in many ways with the Hampton Inn in El Centro. read more

My daughter and I stayed 2 nights in this hotel. We felt ripped off due to the renovation that was taking place as we attempted pretty much just sleep at the place. We've stayed at this place in the past and it's been fine, but with the renovation going on, Holiday Inn has no business checking in guests. We were scheduled to stay 3 nights but couldn't take the filth and noise and a dust filled "breakfast". When we complained about the conditions, the staff did their best to offer apologies, but not much else. After leaving we were informed that someone in management would call. It was a lady called Ingrid. After all the complaints were discussed she offered a 20% discount for our troubles. We did not accept as we are requesting a full refund. Even after discussing the list of problems they would not agree to refund our money. Even after we couldn't sleep past 6 am due to the yelling of profanities by the workers and their noise, even after the elevator not working, even after no water, which was shut off without notice, even after a breakfast not fit for consumption. Holiday Inn should not be open for business during renovation.. They are robbing the guests that unwittingly check in. All anyone has to do to verify my review is read all the others' complaints outlining how they have been duped my Holiday Inn and the case for full refunds is supported. I also suggest that future unsatisfied customers call their IMG corporate office at 888-465-4329-and obtain a case number so that you can get your money back. The people at the hotel have no decision making power, thus don't waste time with them. read more

I stayed in room 103. While I was sleeping, I started hearing a buzzing sound the entire night. The buzzing would stop for short periods of time. It was still going on in the morning. When I told the front desk man, the sound had stopped. Also, my mom had added creamer to her coffee and it tasted awful. She saw that the bottle was expired and informed the staff. The creamer had an expired expiration date (Sep 2017). The man working the front desk said that they keep the same bottle and refill the creamer. When I had arrived, I had planned on giving this place a high rating. The staff seemed friendly and the rooms were nice and clean. I don't plan on returning. read more

I will have to say that this was the worst experience that I have ever had with a hotel. I had set up the reservation for my husband that needed a place to stay close to the job site that he is working on. I was looking for a place that he could stay at week after week. I spoke with the manager Vanessa and worked out a rate of $96/night and she would waive the early check in fee since my husband is working from midnight until 10 AM. He would only need an early check in when he checked in after getting off work at 10 AM on Monday. When he arrived at the hotel, after working a 10 hour overnight sift, Vanessa told him that it would be $96/night plus $45/night for an early check in, plus taxes. Vanessa was rude and made him stand there and wait while she was on a phone call before she ever acknowledged that he was there. I would NOT call that great customer service! She proceeded to tell my husband that I had made the reservation online when I clearly followed her instructions from her email to call the front desk, that she had already spoke to them about the details from our conversation. On top of all this my husband said the hotel lobby was very dirty and could only imagine what the rooms looked like! Vanessa is not a good hotel manager and please do not take her at her word because she makes up things as she goes along! read more

I had to stay here for work and I had a surprisingly a pleasant stay! The sheets were clean and soft and I did not get dry skin from too much bleach. I loved how they used Body Bath Works lotion, shampoo & conditioner. I liked how they had USB outlets by the beds and desk. Spacious room. The AC needs updating, but it was nice & cold when I got in, so it was perfect! Front desk was helpful as well and gave me complimentary water during my stay. I must travel to the Imperial Vally from San Diego to work for a week at a time(M-F), once or twice a month in the winter months. I have stayed at this Holiday Inn Express several times in the last 3 years. My employer is able to get a corporate rate. So, my review is not based completely on cost. As Joseph S. said in his review on 10-4-08, the hotel IS conveniently located right off Highway 111 on the north side of Calexico. The hotel is 3 stories with about 28 rooms per floor with about 8 rooms per floor set aside as smoking rooms. An Applebee's Restaurant is a few steps away just across the parking lot. The Calexico 10 theater is right next door to the south (excellent prices!). A good size shopping center with a Super Walmart as the anchor store is a healthy walk to the other side of Highway 111. Also located nearby, are Wells Fargo, a credit union, Dollar Tree discount store, a sit down Mexican restaurant, a Family Buffet, and a Denny's down the street on the corner. The rooms are fairly basic with wi-fi internet available, new flat screen color tv w/ remote, a small fridge, and small microwave. The beds are pretty comfortable and the linens simple and plain. They provide 4 pillows with covers listed as soft or firm. Each room is comfortable for 2 or 3 people. A King or two Queen beds are available as well as smoking/nonsmoking rooms. An extra roll away is $10. This last visit, I was not able to get a completely smoke free room (something big going on in Brawley & El Centro I was told). The front desk told me that it has been used as a smoking room when they've run short of designated "smoking only" rooms. I'm a nonsmoker and could tell that smoking had been allowed in my room-especially at the end of my work day when the a.c./heater had been off all day. It had a noticeable stale odor for a while until I got the air moving around with the Ac's fan. In some rooms, the a.c./heater fan was noticeable each time the unit came on, but not to the point where I had to turn up the volume on the radio or TV. The a/c works excellent, cooling down the whole area in just minutes. The rooms are insulated well against noise and weather conditions outside. The times that I have stayed at this location (I've stayed on all three floors), I have rarely heard any noise from other rooms or the hall way or noise from outside traffic. I don't know if I've just been lucky or not been around during those possible times. I have not stayed at this location on a Friday-Sunday. There is a small work out room on the 1st floor, and vending and ice machines machines on each floor(3) near the elevator. The halls are not too lengthy to get to the elevator or vending machines. I would rate the free breakfast a 3 of 5 stars. They change the items around daily. One day it'll be cheese omelets & ham, or scrambled eggs and biscuits with sausage gravy, or french toast & maple syrup, sausage patties, pastries, iced cinnamon rolls, and 3 kinds of dry cereal, Milk(2 or 1 percent), orange, grapefruit, or cranberry juice are available as well as 3 kinds of coffee(avail. 24/7). A hotel provided computer is also available 24/7 in the lobby area next to the front desk. A large flat screen television is also located in the dinning/lounge area if you get cooped up in your room and need some space. A pool and a whirlpool hot tub are located to the back of the front parking lot. I have made use of this a few times, as weather permitted. However, my stay in mid January 2011, I found them both with dead leaves and dirt debris floating around and on the bottom.(It gets windy and dusty in the area during the winter months). The pool area is comfortable and protected by a push button code lock for obvious reasons. I was somewhat difficult to open due to having to push 2 buttons at the same time. A room door card swipe lock would be more convenient. Overall, I would stay here again-even outside of work. The front desk and various other staff members have always been very friendly, well informed, knowledgeable and eager to make my stay comfortable and pleasant. DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED.... UPDATE: Nov. 17, 2011 I've stayed a few more times since the last posting. Still getting great service. The staff have greeted me each day with "Welcome back" and are willing to carry on a friendly conversation ask how your day went. Departing to my room they always inquire or ask me not to hesitate to let them know if they can do anything or get something for me. I'm torn. It's a Holiday Inn folks, not the Ritz Carlton! They do a good job at what they are but do I give them 5 stars? I do volunteer work in Mexicali and stay in Calexico from time to time. Otherwise, I'd have no reason in hell to come to this god forsaken corner of the earth. Usually we stay in a roach motel called Holies but they are remodelling and we are looking for options. I had previously stayed in the Marriott, Farifield Inn in El Centro which is a bit nicer but decided to stay a bit closer to the border this time. Holiday Inn Express in Calexico is on the main drag about three miles from the US border with Mexico. The structure looks fairly new from the outside. The place is clean but basic. The rooms are kind of cheap looking but clean and the beds are comfortable. The air conditioning works well-essential in "Hell Centro". They have a pool and jacuzzi though heaven knows why anyone would want to use the jacuzzi in a place that is typically 80-120 degrees. The room rate includes free internet and a quasi continental breakfast. I say quasi because they offer the typical continental stuff but also scrambled or hard boiled eggs and bacon. They took good care of me but next time I'll either stay with the rest of the group at the luxurious Lucerna Hotel in Mexicali or back at the Marriott Fairfield in El Centro. read more

Found myself stuck in Calexico for a week and this Holiday Inn Express was the best/most expensive hotel in town. Overall service, cleanliness and amenities were what I would expect from this type of a budget hotel. No complaints there. The location felt pretty safe and had plenty of parking. The hotel is situated between an Applebee's restaurant and a movie theater. Theres very little going on in Calexico so that might be your best entertainment options. Slight complaint is the overpowering smell of cow/horse manure outside. Not the hotels fault of course but the area does smell! Overall probably the best lodging if you find yourself in Calexico. read more

I have stayed at this hotel several times during business trips to Calexico. Sure it is not a resort hotel but for the price, it is great! My rooms have always been clean and the staff have been wonderful. They even remembered me from my last visit four months prior. One nice feature is that they have a washer/dryer for the hotel guests which was very helpful for me as I usually stayed for 5 days. Having clean clothes on the return flight makes my arrival back home a little bit easier. There is an Applebees and movie theater right next to the hotel and Walmart is nearby as well. read more

He had a million things going on but had a smile on his face the whole entire time and made sure to make us feel at home. He answered all my questions and was very knowledgeable. Everybody that works there gives A_1 service. They are very service oriented and I will say it is the best service that I have ever had at a hotel. I only gave 4 stars because the hot tub runs cold. It was chilly in the early evening and I could not wait to get into the hot tub and it was cold. I asked the girl at the desk if she could turn it on and she tried but all she was doing was flickering the lights in the hot tub. Clearly she did not know how but was willing to try. The only reason I take the kids to a hotel is for the hot tub and pool this is why it was important to us but the service is the best! read more

There were bugs around the A/C unit. The management did not honor my request to check in early without having to pay for a full day. I was willing to pay a prorated price but they repeatedly told me their system would not allow it. The pool was dirty and there were no pool towels available. None of the housekeeping staff spoke English. Breakfast ran out pancakes and the prepared food was not hot and lacked any resemblance of flavor. Being IHG member did not mean anything to the management. I will never stay at this Holiday Inn again. read more

Checked in for 1 night for business. Room was clean. Pulled back covers and checked mattress for any signs of bed bugs. NOPE not a one. King size bed was very very comfortable and had 4 pillows ranging from very soft, soft, medium, and firm. which I loved, felt like I was sleeping on a cloud. Breakfast was very good. Hot ham and turkey sausage patties, scrambled eggs, small veggie omelets, warm biscuits, variety of breads, bagels, danish & muffins. Hot coffee. flavored creamers and regular creamer. Variety of cereal. Cartons of milk, chobani yogurt, fresh fruit and juices. Front desk staff very friendly as well as housekeeping. Food server always checked and made sure there was always plenty of food, and was very friendly...Everyone that worked there spoke English and Spanish. They have in the front lobby as you walk in to your right a computer and printer if you need to use at no additional cost. Daily paper. There are many places around to eat. There was an Applebee's restaurant in the same parking lot as the Hotel. They will give you 10% off when you show them your room key. For me Applebee's was a bit pricey for the portion you received, I would go elsewhere. But that is my opinion. I would definitely stay at this Hotel again. read more
