The Jitney is just great. I ride often and look forward to the ride. It is comfortable, the driver and host professional and friendly. I can't help but feel that the people who complain here about Hampton Jitney being late expect some sort of traffic miracle on the Long Island Expressway (eg: no traffic). Reports of buses being rickety or reservations being difficult to make, are NOT true in my experience. It's EASY to reserve on-line and I've never had a problem with a bus being late or breaking down. The drivers are masters at navigating Manhattan traffic. Also, recently I left an item on the bus and assumed - as one does generally reporting to any Lost-and-Found - that I'd never see it again, but a women in the Calverton office personally tracked it down for me. How can this company sell reserved, prepaid tickets and then not honor them at the pickup? Was told that our bus was full and we had to get on a different bus that wasn't stopping at east Hampton. Drivers and staff were rude, unprofessional and completely disorganized. What a mess! read more

These buses are just getting worse and worse with no end in sight. The bus I took this morning from Bridgehampton to New York was $33. That is $11 more than the Hampton Jitney from the North Fork and in the winter I frankly find this to be price gouging and offensive. During the winter there are the same amount of time option for leaving but not for coming back. I had to wait an extra 2 hours for a bus or cancel for $10 (!!) At our stop at Southampton, it was taking forever for us to leave the stop which is directly outside of their offices. Five minutes into waiting, I noticed our driver was leisurely smoking a cigarette right in front of the office door. The buses smell weird and gross like the bathroom is dirty...additionally the seats are scratchy and old. The bus does not have the amenities nor timeliness of a $33 bus. They give you a snack and water which is costing them probably 50 cents. The snacks are Chex Mix or stale cookies and the water is a 8 oz bottle of warm water. The bus has wifi which is beyond slow and is not a secure network. There is always a weird smell and the staff acts weird. On my bus home which I prepaid for $29, the woman attending the bus was counting out loud the number of patrons on the bus. She also did not have anything to say about the gross smell of the bus, or have any reasonable way to close the bathroom door! This is a review for the Hampton Ambassador. Yelp scared me away from taking the "regular" Jitney, so I reserved a seat on the Ambassador from Manhattan to the North Fork, paying $55 which included seat selection. I took the train at 5:30 pm on a Thursday and was ready for something insane and terrible based on all the scary reviews here. Likely because I left on a Thursday (and not on a Friday), my experience was incredible: 1) The bus pushed off at 5:35 pm on the dot. 2) Reserving my seat (paying $5 extra) was worth it and meant I could sit alone in a single seat, and not rush to get on the bus (as some others did) 3) We were immediately offered warm towlettes, ear buds, and the Wall Street Journal. Attendant was very good. 4) I was ready for some crappy wine to be served, but it wasn't bad!! I had a chilled white wine that was the correct temperature. 5) The rest of the passengers were respectful and not the obnoxious type I was expecting. There were a lot of solo travelers who kept to themselves. 6) The driver was steady and solid....ride was very comfortable. 7) The bathroom was shockingly clean. Again, this may have something more to do with the passengers being respectful, but I actually was not disgusted by the Bus Bathroom. 8) Despite the expected traffic, we arrived right on time to Greenport. I would absolutely take the Ambassador again. I used to take the LIRR but the need to transfer trains and fight for seats became too much. Yelp has sufficiently scared me away from taking the regular Jitney, so any sense of civility is welcomed. The Ambassador would be pricey if traveling in a group, but ideal for a solo traveler or couple. read more

So you're going from the city to Long Island (i.e. Hamptons, etc) or vice-versa are you? Well if you.... A) don't have a car B) don't have a license C) are crazy/ weird D) are cheap E) enjoy convenience ...then the jitney is your BEST bet, my friend! This isn't like some senior citizen charter bus to Vegas or even a booze-filled, topless college girl party bus (sorry skeevy pervs), but a nice mixture of the two. Ok not really, but it's clean, inexpensive, quick and super easy to get a spot onboard. It's best to reserve a seat online in advance but of course, if you like living on the edge, you can just show up at any of the stops and hop onboard since there's *usually* extra space (not so much in May-July). You can even reserve a spot and pay via your smart phone... yes, there's an app for that! (called Portafare). You can buy a one-way ticket or roundtrip to save a few bucks. There are several stops in Manhattan as well as in the Hamptons AND since they have so many buses, there's always one scheduled to arrive very frequently. It's super convenient wherever you are and whenever you need to go. There's plenty of room for your luggage/ bags, free Wi-Fi, snacks and the majority of their fleet is in great, new-ish condition (however there is at least one bus a little on the old/janky side that creaked and cracked the ENTIRE trip and made me want to jump off). I've taken the jitney plenty of times and highly recommend it to those of you that meet any or all of the above-mentioned requirements. Safe travels! read more

THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER!! I had a package being delivered from NYC via East Hampton at 7pm. Hampton Jitney deliberately did not communicate their bus was running early and was told the bus will be there in 5 minutes (7:15pm). After waiting for an hour and speaking to their office 15 times, they demanded that I drive all the way from East Hampton to South Hampton to pick up the bag. It's now almost 9 PM (office closes at 9 PM) and I'm still waiting for the package. The office tell me there is nothing they can do, they don't call customers to let them know the buses are early or late because is company policy. I wasted time and money chasing this bag around and the companies reaction was that it was not their problem... wasn't it? As I kept going to check on the status of the bus, the lady at the counter at SH office continued to crochet and dismiss my concerns. I've taken the Hampton Jitney for over 15 years now with my family, having grown up in Eastern Long Island and have lived in the city 10 years now. On overage, I probably take the bus 20 times (20 round trips a year). The service from the employees is always great but they are constantly late. They used to be on time to the minute. Not anymore. Expect to be 30-60 minutes delayed. Their WiFi is sorely limited too. They also run a stupid JFK/airport connection that adds on at least 45 minutes. On a bus that holds 65 people when full, what sense does that make when only 1-2 people get off. During the summer, their busiest time, they optimize load factor (filling up bosses from Easthampton / Westhampton / North Fork lines)...over customer experience and getting there on time. I get trying to make a profit. But it's bad now. If you're going to Sag Harbor or further east (East hampton/amagansett/montauk), what a nightmare. At least 4-4.5 hours. For the first time in 10 years, the train looks like the better option. read more

The jitney refused to honor the ticket I had purchased for a certain time, because it was raining, and the bus was full of other people. Had it oversold tickets or what? At any rate, I was stranded in the middle of nowhere, and with no prospect of a bus accepting my ticket if the rain was still pouring down. Their attitude was: sucks to be me. If my son had not got on the phone and yelled until he was blue in the face, I would probably still be out there, waiting in the rain for a bus to stop for me. And why do the ticket takers not speak English? Are the undocumented workers? I am certain they are horribly compensated. Someone should investigate. No real complaints! For $30, it's totally worth it over LIRR insanity (unreliable schedules, funky transfers and Red Bull/vodka infused yells of "Hey bro!" for three hours? Thanks, but...). You can make your reservation online (or through the Portafare app). The morning buses hook you up with your choice of muffins or granola bars, as well as water or orange juice. Free wi-fi, but I think you need to take the Ambassador line for power outlets. Easy boarding, and thankfully, I was lucky enough to get a row to myself (I'm bad at sharing). Plus, I can set my bags next to me without storing them overhead (at 5 ft high and not rising, overhead compartments are, um, "challenging"). The seats are roomy and you can recline like you're at a Passover Seder or one of those jerky guys on a crowded airline, but on here, it's not jerky. Also, LOVE LOVE LOVE the anti-talky cell phone policy. 3 minutes for emergency calls and that's it. Any longer, and your rudeness is cut off. Take advantage of the fancy Southampton Press newspaper they hand out--human interest stories about the moneyed to satisfy your inner voyeur. The only irksome part is the very narrow aisle--I may have taken out a few 8 year olds with my stuffed to the gills gym bag (bikinis and wine take up more room than you'd think). On future excursions, though, I may splurge and pay the extra $15 for the snazzy Ambassador...what are the extra amenities aside from the personal power outlet? If you tell me strippers and booze, I'm all over it. read more

They're on time and they give you snacks, but the bathrooms are DISGUSTING. Whenever anyone tries to use it, the smell of sewage wafts throughout the whole back area. Also they don't turn on the TV's, which is a major buzz kill. But if you sat at the front it might be okay. Just STEER CLEAR of the back of that bus. #nasty read more

I'm sorry about the negative experiences other reviewers had. I usually steer clear of businesses with bad Yelp ratings/reviews, but in this case, I did not want to rent a car or take the train to/from the Hamptons. I've taken the Jitney several times to and from Manhattan and within the Hamptons. This is a good option, as renting a car is pricey in peak season and I don't like the traffic stress if I'm driving. On each occasion I've used the Jitney, I've been satisfied. First, I call their information number as many times as I need to to ask questions. Tip: Do this to conform your name if you reserve online. Also, call them if the jitney is running late. The operators at their number have been nice and helpful with scheduling and in assuring me that the bus is on its way but stuck in traffic at such and such stop 2 miles away. The price is affordable. The buses were not packed even in peak season. I got a window seat, and although I can get carsick on long rides, I was very relaxed with water and snacks and with the air conditioning and fell asleep. There are some reviews about awful toilet smells in the entire bus, and I was very worried. I did not use the toilet, but there were no smells on the bus. There were also no animals/dogs, as a reviewer has written. Attendants were professional. they seemed very young, like they were working a summer job while in high school/early college, but they weren't there to party. It was very quiet on the bus, and there wasn't any noise or partying. In contrast, the train to the Hamptons can feel a little spring break and is super crowded and sweat/food smelly. The train also has a very limited schedule, and makes only few stops in the Hamptons. A good tip is to maybe take the train there and take the bus back to Manhattan. A few negatives 1. Yes, the bus can be late, but this really cannot be controlled with the Hamptons traffic. 2. They did make a somewhat long stop, but I slept through it. 3. The AC can be very strong. Bring a sweater. One major area for improvement: Please, please have better lighting at your stops. I've taken the jitney back to Manhattan late at night, and there was no light by the stop. The jitney was late, and had there not been one other woman passenger waiting, I'd be uncomfortable late at night. There were bushes and trees, no light, and no sidewalk at the stop, it was kind of in the bushes. There is enough money in the Hamptons to take care of this. read more

The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round, round and round And the money on the bus goes, Clink, clink, clink, all through the town. It's a fine ride out to the North and South Fork, just make sure you don't have any special requests (like being let off a mile further down the road from the Jitney stop in Aquebogue and the bus driver rudely says no, even though you are the only person on board getting off or being picked up in Aquebogue) The bus drivers and attendants can be weird and rude, but also nice and normal. Depends on who's working that day, what they put in their coffee, etc. It can also get a little cold, so girls, bring a sweater or a blanket if you're one of those two-seat hoggers (and I will probably ask you to move over if the bus is full, so get ready). It's always been clean, haven't tried the restrooms yet, but can you blame me? Who hasn't had a traumatic sensory experience in a bus restroom? I rest my case. After two hours or more because of the traffic, a long bus ride is still just that: a long bus ride. And so we sing: "Your name" on the bus says Let Me Off! Let Me Off! Let Me Off! "Your name" on the bus says Let Me Off! All through the town. read more

Awful, awful service. Took bus and it broke down at the side of the road. Company handled this poorly. Didn't keep passengers informed. Eventually took us to Manorville to wait longer. Four hours after the breakdown I was forced to arrange my own transportation. Worst of all, company didn't return 3 emails seeking a refund/compensation. This used to be my favorite go-to, easy, convenient way out to the Hamptons every wknd. This year however, I have yet to have a hassle-free ride. Every single wknd there has been some sort of issue. The buses are NEVER on schedule anymore, and even if they leave on time, I've now sat on the side of the road for 20-50 min every time for different reasons. I don't know if they just got too big and can't handle it, or what, but for close to $30 a ride each way, and having had good experiences in yrs past, I'm VERY disappointed. Really wish somebody would launch a better service that would wipe them out. The Luxury Liner does not have enough buses. 6 hrs to cancel a reservation is a lot but that's the least of it. Working with the Hampton Jitney was smooth and easy when arranging transportation for some of our guests between their hotels and our venue. They were quick to respond with the initial contract and always answered our questions quickly. They were also very helpful when we decided to add an additional stop on our route just a few weeks before the wedding. Everything went great and we wouldn't hesitate to use them again! read more

The busses are ok, but I give a one star because they frequently arrive late (not the Jitney's fault, traffic) and there is no way that you can be notified that the bus is arriving late. Why not an app that shows the location of each bus or a web site that simply says that the 4:45 bus will be arriving at 5:05? This is a simple thing. Even the LIRR and NY Transit have these things. When I suggested this improvement, management was dismissive. Also the web site is annoying and out of date. You can spend a few minutes trying to make a reservation (Ambassador) and the the site will simply not go forward. I am told that this is because when only a few seats are left, they want you to make the reservation on the phone. Why not inform the customer of this situation on line at the appropriate time, i. e., "Bus almost full, please telephone to complete your reservation."? Seems simple. The Jitney sucks. Having taken the train out and the Jitney back to the City, I can say without question that the LIRR is far superior! On the ride back to the City last night the temperature in the bus was easily over 80 degrees. When people (everyone!) complained to the attendant, she just said it was an "old bus" and that all we could do was to "call the company" and complain to them. Well, I've called several time today and just gotten voicemail and left numerous messages but, not surprisingly, haven't heard by from Hampton Jitney. read more

Bus is sitting for the last 20 minutes at 41st and 3rd. No announcements; no idea why. No A/C, and it's 87 outside. At the boarding point on 96th, there were 4 Jitney busses. One after the other, you get in line, get to the front of the line, say where you're going, and they tell you if this is your bus or not. We finally won on the 4th one. No customer service; no apparent organization. More later, if we ever start moving again. read more

I took the Jitney to Montauk and couldn't believe how miserable the experience was. The driver got off the wrong exit on the LIE and next thing I know the bus is in reverse turning around on a residential street in Shirley. This 'detour' added about 45 minutes to the trip. As for the conditions on the bus, I'd imagine they're comparable to how steerage was on the Titanic. There is hardly room for two adults to sit next to each other. The fat person sitting next to me was half in my seat so I couldn't even open my computer. Every time the bathroom door opened the whole bus smelled foul. I didn't bother asking the attendant why the bus was going the wrong way because she barely spoke English. Do yourself a favor and pay the extra $15 to take the ambassador, which I'm sitting on right now sipping wine and writing this review with my phone plugged in. read more

On Wednesday, August 24, 2011, I had two reservations for a 10:00AM Hampton Jitney from 40th Street in Manhattan to East Quogue. When I arrived with my 90-year-old mother in her transport wheelchair, there was no formed line or supervisor present. As the scheduled bus parked, a mob crowded around the doorway of the bus. Removing my frail 80 lb. mother from this scene placed us on the periphery of the crowd. As the group dwindled to around a handful of passengers, I folded up my mother's wheelchair and placed it in the luggage area. Her wheelchair is 15 lbs. and folds easily by pressing the arms together. While holding my mother's arm I assisted her towards the bus door. Reaching the door, the bus driver declared, "No more passengers, I need a count." I asked if my mother could sit down while the count was conducted, and the driver's response was a terse no. I pleaded that she HAD TO sit because she would fall and again I received the same response. A kind gentleman held my mother upright while I retrieved the wheelchair from the luggage area. With the count completed, I wheeled my mother towards the door, helped her stand and continued to semi carry/assist her up the stairs of the bus. A woman seated in the first row behind the driver, gave my mother a seat, while I continued down the aisle to find a seat in the back of the bus. The driver mounted the stairs to the bus, closed the door and started the engine. A passing pedestrian started to bang on the bus door before the bus started to move. The driver opened the door to hear that my mother's wheelchair was left on the sidewalk. The driver got out of his seat, stood and announced to the entire bus that it was not his job to fold the wheelchair and place it in the bus! I walked off the bus to fold the chair. I was so disheartened that the driver, who refused to give me his name, would leave a wheelchair on a Manhattan sidewalk! Heartless! My mother and I ride all over Manhattan on public buses and are treated with sensitivity and respect. I felt mistreated and disrespected, as did my mom. I was certainly expecting more from your company. The disregard for the elderly and the disabled was truly disappointing. read more

I take this bus a lot out to the North Fork especially during the summer. The only reason why I take it is because the bus drops off at really convenient places for me and it is reasonably clean inside for a public bus..but I have quite a few issues with it. 1. I don't like that they only give you a $2 discount if you buy a round trip, why even bother; 2. The snacks they give you on board, are so bad, especially the drinks...the water and lemonade are gross and how can they give you a drink that doesn't have a replaceable lid??!! which means once you open it you have to drink the entire thing; 3. The bus is sooooo coooollllld during the summer. I have to bring a sweater with me for the weekend just because of the bus; 4. And has anyone ever noticed that a one way bus fare from Manhattan to the North Fork or the South Fork is about a $12 difference?? Why is that? It's the same distance...I'm just glad I don't have to go to the South Fork 7/3/07 Update They have now started giving out little bottles of Poland Spring water instead of that nasty crap they were serving before so I'm upping their star rating from two to three read more

And, on the bus returning to the city...a 4+ hour jaunt from East Hampton, the hostess' announcements were unintelligible. And when we asked her if you could get off after their 79th and Broadway stop she scowled...NO VAY! NO VAY! So much for manners on the Hampton Jitney. And when you call to discuss with a manager the operators won't put you through to Dispatch until you tell them your whole arduous story all over again....and then they "un-plug". Unfortunately our options to come in and out of the city from home are very limited. I can only attribute the lack of customer service and professionalism to the founders and management. I've been riding this thing since I was in Kindergarten and the experience has slowly been declining. Perhaps it is due to the increased exposure of the east end paired with the entitled narcissists that come with it, or perhaps its due to the lack of competition. Probably both. Either way, they better get their shit together or free markets will prevail and they'll be scratching their heads wondering what happened, although it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone with half a head. Only take this bus if you want to get your stuff stolen and have a terrible experience. Zero luggage security and horrible customer service. The representatives literally told me that my suitcase did not exist, and that there was nothing they could do about the robbery of my valuable personal items. However, it did, in fact, exist, as well as enter the buses luggage compartment, which my accompanying family members as well as the jitney's own host recalled. While attempting to get information on my luggage, my calls were dodged for 3 days, I was hung up on, and laughed at. I would give them zero stars if I could. I am so disappointed, and will never ride with them again. I am not alone in this, apparently stuff disappears with them "all the time." read more

This Company has been around forever and the buses they use feel like it too. They are uncomfortable, very loud, and they squeek like hell which drives me Crazy. Do not take this bus if you want your luggage to arrive with you at your destination OR you would like any assistance tracking your bag when you discover the driver has left it behind. The people who work here are the least helpful, rudest, most inconsiderate people. They took my number down 5 times, never called me back and did nothing to try and find the bag - they left behind!!!!! They have not the slightest care for their customers or even compassion for a fellow human being who was seriously upset at having their belongings abandoned by the side of the road. #boycottjitney read more

Was supposed to take the 12:15 bus from Hampton bays to nyc & get in at 2:30. The bus never showed- they forgot. Meanwhile the customer service people are rude as all get out even though they company screwed up especially someone named "roge or doge" who's trying to tell me it was "traffic" when the last person said the bus leaving Southampton at 1:00 would get us. At 12:45 they have a poor driver that just got done on his east bound route swing around to get us to manorville to meet another bus. We get there & that bus didn't wait. So our driver was going to take us another 2 exits on 495 to meet it. At the light, our bus has the entire length of a trailer attached to a work truck plow across the right front of our bus and we pull over on the 495 on ramp. We then have to wait for another bus. Turns out some driver called out & nobody at jitney was proactive in rescheduling or contacting customers so they know & can make an informed decision. Estimated time just to get to the city is now almost 4. Patient visiting at Sloan will end at 6 & i have headache and back hurts. Should have taken the train which WAS an option. NOT the drivers fault but unfortunately the bus staff get bad managing. They made sure to get their money after all this though read more
