The menu is very simple, either chicken or beef. The staff is confused by these choices and finds it difficult to put these ingredients together into the simple bowls described in the electronic menus/ordering tablets. The one worker in the front on our visit today was most certainly high as a kite, they were hyper focused on filling little cups with chopped green onions. This effort appeared to take every ounce of concentrations available! Then there was the food. Chicken thigh saturated in sugary sweet nondescript sauce and fatty beef that was so old and grey it was probably too late for the mortuary to accept. The sticky white rice was exactly as one would expect for sticky white rice (there, I found something good to say!) My opinion and advice is to stay away from this restaurant. Couldn't have survived my college days without Hana Kitchen. When you're balling on a budget, getting lunch in between classes, just know Hana is there to provide at least 2-3 meals. I've ate at Hana and craved it on so many occasions, whether I'm hungover or leaving the Rec den for a workout. There's outdoor space to dine and eat with your friends, conveniently next to Blenders 8in the heart of IV. It's healthy and affordable, what more can you ask for. Stock up on your side sauces, add pickled vegetables, and you have a bomb ass meal packed with flavor and protein. It takes meal prepping on another level lol. Came back to visit and try Hana Kitchen again, and boy has it declined since I attended sb five years ago! The workers truly hate their job! When I worked here, it was all like a family--we were all having so much fun just working together at our local boba/asian food shop! Anyways, the cashier was some guy wearing a chain who reallllllllyyyy did not want to be there. Took our orders and I think the only time he said something was to tell me my order total? The very first time I went here was my first year of college at UCSB. I remember that time being super delicious and flavorful. However, every time I go there now, I am very disappointed by the lack of flavor in the chicken and vegetables. It is a great price though, especially for the portion sizes! You have to get the creamy Sriracha mayo and teriyaki sauce on the side! That is what gives the food the flavor, plus it's just super tasty. I personally recommend getting the mini size. Just kidding, here are the details: if you order a fruit-flavored black tea, it automatically comes without milk. Then you can add options ranging from boba to lychee or mango jelly. I had a lychee black tea with lychee jelly and boba and it hit the spot on one of the first really warm days of spring. It cane to $5.15 total. I've heard that the boba balls can be hit-or-miss, so I must have been there on a good day. They were perfectly chewy, cooked through, and deliciously soaking in the lychee tea. Other tea flavors include raspberry and honeydew. The location's big, wide open front kept me feeling pandemic-safe, and staff were wearing masks and gloves. Plus there was a container of hand sanitizer in the pick-up area. I was there early in the day so it was pretty much empty. My only wish? Disposable instead of plastic boba straws! read more

As someone who tried Hana kitchen years ago, I can tell you the quality of the food has gone down & it doesn't taste as good as it did before. It's flavorless, but once you add spicy Mayo, siracha, & the cucumbers it's a lot better, I definitely could not eat it without the toppings. Management also changed not sure what they've changed in the food process but they need to work on it. I used to love coming here as a freshman, but in the two years since then the quality has gone significantly downhill. The chicken in the chicken bowls is extremely dry and overcooked, the beef in the beef bowls is salty and overseasoned, and the rice is often mushy and overcooked. Also DO NOT GET THE BOBA HERE. I've tried it a couple times but the boba itself is always too soft and mushy or hard and impossible to chew. The drinks themselves are nothing special (I've tried a couple of the slushees and the ice milk), and the ice in the drinks is a very "icy" consistency that's more like shaved ice than how I'd imagine a slushy. My experience was the opposite of some other reviewers. The young woman serving was pleasant and helpful. But the food was not to my liking. I asked if there were any choices that would avoid a lot of fat. She said that the beef is boiled so that would be a bad choice. And the chicken meat is from a fatty part of the chicken. So, I opted for the vegan version. The vegan "chicken" managed to have the flavor and consistency of chicken fat! The only way I could eat it was to remind myself that it is really just tofu with that horrid texture. The vegetables were mostly just overcooked cabbage. No broccoli or any other tasty vegetables. Under that was white rice. If you are desperate for food in Isla Vista you might be OK eating here. Right now many of the restaurants are closed so I was desperate for something new. While the taste was certainly what we were craving, the portions and prices were definitely not top notch. First off, the prices didn't match the menu. The prices were $0.50 more for the 'Regular' size. For the $10 we paid for a vegan Regular bowl, the portions were ridiculously small. We were really surprised by the portions, as we have read reviews raving about how much food you get for the price. Taste wise, the vegan bowl was amazing. Tasted light, was super flavorful, and the vegan chicken was perfect texture wise. The rice and veggies were perfectly done, too.
