Great sandwiches when they are not out of white bread. Last 3-4 times have been the same story. I don't get it.

It is extremely rare that I write a review without actually visiting in person. My sister somehow got my hooked on this small, local sandwich chain. I had seen its various locations (Isla Vista, Santa Barbara's Mesa and Goleta) and always wanted to check it out; yet leave it to my sister from out of town to introduce me to it. Twice she has ordered take-out sandwiches at lunch time for us. Their sandwich menu is nutso with 36 creations to choose from, including several that are vegetarian. Of course, the options are endless if you choose to build you own! I went with the #14 (a turkey BLT) and #2 (turkey and cheese) which are simply basic yet tasty. I have no idea what they do to their bread but is addicting. Slight crunch on the outside, yet soft to the squeeze and full of gummy flour flavor! All of the ingredients appear fresh and nothing special--which I appreciate when I want a deli sandwich. I love the fact that you can purchase your sandwich in a variety of sizes including a "mini" for if you need a snack to hold you over and not a full meal. I also think of children, those who are on a lower carb diet, who have had bariatric surgery, or are limiting portion sizes. I personally go for a "small" sandwich. However, if you want to go all out, choose the "medium" or "family" size. Even better, if you're hosting a party, order a three to ten foot long sandwich (requires a day's notice). I will be back to check out the actual place--third time's a charm they say. I've heard both their chicken salad and tuna salad are both delicious. That's next up! P/S: According to Yelpers, they do not accept the Check-In Offer for a free soda with a sandwich purchase. They should really remove this from their Yelp page... Note: Only the Milpas location offers chicken sandwiches, burgers, french fries and chicken nuggets. Note squared: They charge more for credit card payments. This place can either make your day or break your heart. There's a lady who is absolutely awesome and makes awesome sandwiches and I would happily buy three sandwiches from her to eat over the day and regret nothing. And then there's the man. He's nice enough, but he will make the most under-made sandwich you will encounter. He skimps on the protein, skips on the toppings, he just...skimps. If the woman is working behind the counter it's great. If it's the guy then...it's gotten to the point where I might just turn around and leave. This little sandwich shop is in the strip next to K-Mart. They have a few outdoor tables, and inside there is a small seating area with booths and a few tables. This is the kind of place with a newspaper lying on a booth for customers and Kill Bill playing on a little TV. It is super laid back and no one is trying to impress. Every day they do a $5.99 combo--it's the regular size sandwich of the day, chips and a drink. We enjoyed the #23 (turkey, ham, roast beef and cheese) and the #11 (salami, martadella, capicola and cheese). They are generous with the meats and you can choose from several cheese options. Each sandwich comes with the works--mayo, mustard, lettuce, onion and tomato. The bread is kind of a wheat/whole grain and it's super good. You can add oil and vinegar in the station by the table. They carry several chip varieties including Miss Vickie's, they have fountain soda and they also have lots of cold drink options (Snapple teas, beers by the bottle, etc.). Stop in for a quick sandwich and check it out. This is way better than Subway a few doors down. read more

We've gotten subs from this place before and liked them. Today was a real disappointment, with a sandwich that didn't have all the listed ingredients for a '#13,' and was just skimpy. The lady who usually has made our orders was busy with a very picky customer who ordered multiple sandwiches, while kibitzing the prep, so a gentleman came out of the back room to help. Unfortunately, he was also cooking on the griddle while he tried to put my order together, and missed a few steps. At least at Subway you can see what they do. read more

This shop features on Groupon every week with high reviews which is puzzling. Tried to use a Groupon but the server said they didn't take the coupons and tried to send me to the other Sam's to Go in IV. After showing him the Groupon with his shop's address listed on the coupon, he said he would accept the Groupon, as if doing me a favor. The food quality was below average, with cheap tasting ingredients. The turkey/roast beef sandwich was almost tasteless and the burger made my mouth taste like an ashtray afterwards. The owner is absent and it appears does not take active interest in the business. Will not be coming back here. read more

The two workers messed up our order and overcharged us. When we asked them to fix the order, they refused and also started arguing with us about the price. They had the receipt and when we asked to see it they crumpled it up and threw it away and said no. I used to go to college in SLO and my folks were living in Orange County. Once, when driving between the two with some friends, we had to emergency stop at the Kmart (now Target) nearby to use the restroom. Seeing the name of this place, I thought "Hah, thats my name! Been to Sams on Milpas trying this one today during work lunch. As usual reasonable prices on good sandwiches! Got a hot pastrami with avocado... only part that was hot is the meat. Oh, man...Sam's used to my go-to. I'm heartbroken. They've gone WAY downhill, in both customer service and quality. BEWARE...every time the owner rings me up, he overcharges by one or two dollars. No exaggeration here, folks...please be carefull if the older gentleman rings you up. After 3 times, the intention appears obvious. Depending on who works there, the service is terrible. Had a groupon deal and the guy working didn't know how to scan the barcode so I had to pay the full price. Extremely overpriced, very average quality food. I was disappointed I did not receive whole wheat bread and I paid $6 for mostly a white bread sandwich. I got the turkey, bacon, avocado which had next to no flavor and very very little turkey breast. Not sure if they toast bread here, but this sandwich was less than what I could make at home.
