It is extremely rare that I write a review without actually visiting in person. My sister somehow got my hooked on this small, local sandwich chain. I had seen its various locations (Isla Vista, Santa Barbara's Mesa and Goleta) and always wanted to check it out; yet leave it to my sister from out of town to introduce me to it. Twice she has ordered take-out sandwiches at lunch time for us. Their sandwich menu is nutso with 36 creations to choose from, including several that are vegetarian. Of course, the options are endless if you choose to build you own! I went with the #14 (a turkey BLT) and #2 (turkey and cheese) which are simply basic yet tasty. I have no idea what they do to their bread but is addicting. Slight crunch on the outside, yet soft to the squeeze and full of gummy flour flavor! All of the ingredients appear fresh and nothing special--which I appreciate when I want a deli sandwich. I love the fact that you can purchase your sandwich in a variety of sizes including a "mini" for if you need a snack to hold you over and not a full meal. I also think of children, those who are on a lower carb diet, who have had bariatric surgery, or are limiting portion sizes. I personally go for a "small" sandwich. However, if you want to go all out, choose the "medium" or "family" size. Even better, if you're hosting a party, order a three to ten foot long sandwich (requires a day's notice). I will be back to check out the actual place--third time's a charm they say. I've heard both their chicken salad and tuna salad are both delicious. That's next up! P/S: According to Yelpers, they do not accept the Check-In Offer for a free soda with a sandwich purchase. They should really remove this from their Yelp page... I bought two (already overpriced) medium-sized sandwiches for $36.38 including tax. If that was not enough, I was actually charged $37.56, due to paying with credit card. I have no issues with credit cards needing extra 3% charge itself, but the real issue was that I was never told about this extra credit card charge in advance. Nor was there any indication in the store or on the website that credit card payments incurred this 3% surcharge. Finally, upon asking for a refund of $37.56 - $36.38 = $1.18, the manager actually yelled at me, saying that this 3% credit card charge is "commonplace". This is bullshit untrue across the country, as we all know (especially if not told in advance). Thus, long story short, this store simply aims to earn as much money from consumers as possible, even if this means overstepping the bounds of ethics. read more

This little sandwich shop is in the strip next to K-Mart. They have a few outdoor tables, and inside there is a small seating area with booths and a few tables. This is the kind of place with a newspaper lying on a booth for customers and Kill Bill playing on a little TV. It is super laid back and no one is trying to impress. Every day they do a $5.99 combo--it's the regular size sandwich of the day, chips and a drink. We enjoyed the #23 (turkey, ham, roast beef and cheese) and the #11 (salami, martadella, capicola and cheese). They are generous with the meats and you can choose from several cheese options. Each sandwich comes with the works--mayo, mustard, lettuce, onion and tomato. The bread is kind of a wheat/whole grain and it's super good. You can add oil and vinegar in the station by the table. They carry several chip varieties including Miss Vickie's, they have fountain soda and they also have lots of cold drink options (Snapple teas, beers by the bottle, etc.). This shop features on Groupon every week with high reviews which is puzzling. Tried to use a Groupon but the server said they didn't take the coupons and tried to send me to the other Sam's to Go in IV. After showing him the Groupon with his shop's address listed on the coupon, he said he would accept the Groupon, as if doing me a favor. The food quality was below average, with cheap tasting ingredients. The turkey/roast beef sandwich was almost tasteless and the burger made my mouth taste like an ashtray afterwards. The owner is absent and it appears does not take active interest in the business. Will not be coming back here. read more

I used to go to college in SLO and my folks were living in Orange County. Been to Sams on Milpas trying this one today during work lunch. As usual reasonable prices on good sandwiches! Got a hot pastrami with avocado... only part that was hot is the meat. Oh, man...Sam's used to my go-to. I'm heartbroken. They've gone WAY downhill, in both customer service and quality. BEWARE...every time the owner rings me up, he overcharges by one or two dollars.
