If you want semi decent Asian food in IV, look no further. Hana kitchen has some pretty dank chicken and beef bowls (never had the vegan bowl so I can't say) with authentic seasonings and cooking styles. I do have to warn anyone that orders boba to ask for 50% or 75% sugar as the default drinks are super sweet. Now onto the bad part: The prices and the wait. I've been told that back in the day, Hana kitchen was quite cheap, making it quite the bang for your buck. However, it seems that every quarter the prices have increased (now it's almost $6 for a mini chicken bowl and over $11 for the super chicken bowl after tax), which means that Hana kitchen is no longer the cheap little eatery it was in the past. On top of the constantly rising prices, another problem is the obscene wait times for food. Went here the other day for the first time and ordered a standard chicken bowl. It was 8 dollars so I guess my expectations were a little high. The chicken itself was pretty standard, well cooked, juicy, not too much fat on it. The bowl also came with rice and some odd looking vegetable cabage concoction which didnt look or taste particularly fresh. I've been to and worked at boba/restaurant joints, and I have to say that this one has a few major flaws. As many of the other reviews suggest, the customer service is just not there- with employees neglecting customers in order to chat and gossip amongst themselves. I went at lunch time, about 1pm, and it was obvious that they were understaffed in the back. Food took up to 30-40 minutes to come out when it was not even that crowded. As for the food itself, it is ~okay (in a meh way) For a person craving asian food, I would recommend seoul food (2 blocks away) to Hana Kitchen any day. read more

Typical American Chinese food. Price is good for the quantity they offer, but not for quality.

I ordered a chicken bowl with ginger. Instead of red ginger, in my delivery order, they gave me Sriracha. Mind you, condiments cost extra here. Furthermore, both my condiment tubs were only filled a 1/4 of the way. The Sriracha was not capped, and ended up all over the bag, my utensils, my box, and the napkins. All of my chicken was burnt. I ordered a vegan chicken bowl and they gave me a bowl with a few pieces of vegan chicken, then filled to the brim with ACTUAL chicken. As if I would not notice. They didn't say a word. I even checked to make sure it was the right order. The workers are lazy and have absolutely terrible customer service skills. It takes up to 45 minutes to get your food on a regular day, sometimes they do not even warn you of this before you pay. Food is good but they should care more on customer service. Today, I was very exhausted after midterm and looking for something quick to eat. I chose here because I have been here before. I got my receipt and wait for about 25 minutes. I started wonder that why my order still not came up. The only reason I am giving Hana Kitchen two stars is due to the fact that for the 4th time this month they have run out of beef and its becoming more and more frequent, isn't that WHY we have a handy tool called inventory? Not only that they cannot seem to get my order right. Here's a cherry to top it all off, I order in advance on purpose... but to take an hour to get my food when I ordered 30 mins prior to arriving is absurd so a total of 1.5 hours to get my food? Great Food. Horrible Service. They just stared at me instead of taking my order. When I asked if I could get the order to go, the girl lazily pointed to some bags in the corner. When you asked them to do something for you, its like pulling teeth.There is not one time I have been there that they got my order completely right. I like Hana a lot but the Isla Vista location takes FOREVER compared to the downtown location. I ordered 35 min ago and still waiting for the second part of my order. I'm not sure why it takes so long for them to make the food considering every order is the same - rice and chicken. Pretty good for when you're drunk or high and want food, but if you're sober, it's not worth, unless you don't mind waiting a fucking year to get your food. How long does it take to throw some chicken on rice, forreal. Actually tho, expect to wait like 30 minutes. Go to Panda Express or something. Great atmosphere. Astoundingly bad food/service. I asked the person at the counter to extrapolate on their menu items. All she could say was "I don't know." I asked her how it was possible that with six people working behind a counter five feet from the cook, no one knew what was in the mango taco. She didn't seem to understand. However, 2 of my friends and I have gone 3 separate times (days, sometimes weeks apart) and got extremely sick afterwards. Wish I could recommend this place. While ordering my food, a worker arrived for her shift (pink hat) and when a co-worker asked her how she was doing she gave her the hand and said try again in 10 hours. Incredibly poor attitude and implication of poor service. Who wants to talk to someone after they told a co-worker, sarcastically or not, that they didn't want to talk to anyone? The wait time is pretty extreme for food: I waited 25 minutes for a mini chicken bowl and boba. Beyond that, while I was waiting for my mini-chicken bowl, my order was called and as I walked up I saw the same pink hat worker take my mini chicken bowl and tell her co-worker that it was hers (mind you, that's pretty unlikely seeing as she arrived as I was ordering). She then continued to eat her food while taking orders; pretty unprofessional to be choosing down and taking orders literally in between bites. I proceeded to wait another 15 minutes for my food. Lastly, when I got my food, there was a heap of jelly looking substance on my food. My assumption it was a jelly form of teriyaki, but regardless it was not appetizing to see a blob of jelly on my food. And to top it off, I got incredibly sick from the food. Unbelievable! This place is amazingly..... BAD. And when i mean bad i mean ill rather grab something from the dining halls or a soda machine than here. I don't know why but i went there and no one was going to serve us and help us? When someone finally did, maybe its the manager or whatever, just had a sweaty unhappy look that just brings all our apetites down. Food and drink was just barely edible i would say. I haven't been here in over year, but haven't been able to write a review because I recently made a yelp account. My reasoning for not returning to this horrendous establishment is based on many visits and horrible experiences. The many times that I did get food from Hana, the chicken was usually burnt and unappealing. The side of vegetables is a sad excuse of "vegetables" and the rice was so sticky and unpleasant. With such a limited menu, you would expect them to put more effort into the food they have to offer. How hard is it to mess up chicken repeatedly, apparently not hard at all for this restaurant. The boba is sub par. Coming from the bay area and its plethora of boba shops, Hana's boba doesn't even come close. The reason why I haven't returns since my last visit over a year ago is because of the absolutely terrible customer service. My friend and I were in a rush and ordered boba hoping it would be ready in a little less than 5 minutes because of the short line. But to our horror, it took them over 20 minutes to give us our drinks. Boba doesn't require any cooking time, all the ingredients should be ready and poured into a cup and given to the customer. Not only did they take forever, they messed up our order and when we asked for a refund they refused. We asked to speak to the manager and he proceeded to throw the money that we had paid at me. The audacity of this man was astounding to me. Customers should be not treated like this at any restaurant for any reason. After this experience I have told my friends and made sure to let people know about how terrible Hana is. I will never return even if it was the last restaurant standing in IV. read more

I love hana kitchen for the affordable prices and large quantity but the wait for this place is insanely long. Is there only one cook doing everything? Ordering through SB Menus is the worst thing because I've had to wait an hour and 45 min to get my mini chicken bowl. i called and they said it's because they're busy but if it was by priority and if there was a good system in place, it shouldn't take an hour and 45 min to get my food. I eat a lot of rice bowls and this place served me one of the worst beef bowls I've had in my life. Fatty, small portion of beef, mixed with onions to make it appear to be more than what it was. the manager has a bad mood all the time doesn't make me want to go there again and plus my friends who work there told me that the kitchen is unhygienic and dirty. the kitchen is really small and they only have one table and limited cups to make the boba. their ingredients are also very inconsistent because the workers and managers just decide on the spot for what to put in the drinks. they don't inform other workers from other shifts about their changes in ingredients, that's why the boba can taste so different each time. the manager doesn't care who works there either. he just wants people to work for him. he doesn't even interview or get to know his workers, nor does he teach them how to make food, how to treat customers, and how everything works in the store. no wonder so many workers are clueless about the menu when you ask them something. read more

I went there yesterday for the Mango Boba. I have to say I was disappointed because they didn't have the Strawberry Slush on the menu, but they just opened and are still developing so I have faith. Their boba is the REAL boba, chewy and delicious, unlike the tapioca boba which is overly soft and has a weird texture (served at other Asian places). The guy at the counter was super nice, and when there wasn't a line, he went around to ask people how the food and drinks were. My boyfriend became sick with Campylobacter (a bacteria most often caught from eating undercooked or mishandled chicken) several days after eating a chicken bowl here.
