I came on July 4th around 3pm and was happy to see that they weren't very busy. We were seated right away by our server who was very friendly and helpful. I ordered the spicy maki combo which was 18 rolls consisting of spicy tuna, spicy salmon, and spicy California. The tuna in the rolls was nice and had a good flavor; it was spicy and yummy. The salmon was alright, not my favorite flavor wise lacking a bit. The California roll was not very good, bland, and had a poor flavor. The rice on the outside of the rolls tasted old and stale and ruined the rolls. Above all that the server rushed us a bit to get out and brought the check out before we even asked for it or were done with our food. This felt strange as the restaurant was fairly empty and we had only been there for around 25 minutes. Would maybe try again but for the future would hope the rice was fresh and the server would allow us to finish our meals. read more

(It seems like a safe place, it's just an area with high activity) Luckily we came for lunch so we got the last parking spot in front of the restaurant Greeted and sat as we entered in, not many people during lunch time but it was also the weekday so not too much going on. Had my eye on this before coming to Duluth for a weekend trip. My family and I drove downtown and were initially a little weirded out at the location. Fair warning - the restaurant is located off a side street in a sketchy area and it fairly inconspicuous looking from the outside. We decided to give it a chance - and boy am I glad we did! The inside is very clean and modern. It has a sort of nightclub vibe. Happy hour prices were super affordable and we got a lot more bang for our buck than at other sushi restaurants in MN. Don't judge a book by its cover. Hanabi Japanese Cuisine sits on a somewhat sketchy block with a street-facing front that gives zero indication that what's inside may be any good or even that it's a restaurant. We parked a few car-lengths away and as we approached the entrance my friend gave me one of those looks that can only be interpreted as "are you sure?". It's fair to say that Hanabi's outside doesn't match its inside in the least. Inside, one can imagine how hopping his place might have been pre-Covid or might still be, post-pandemic. The bar area is big and stunning. The restaurant itself is filled with trippy artwork that causes a double-take. The staff - well - some might've been hired right off that dicey block; quirky, but fully capable. One orders off a menu here, while sitting at a table, so we did. My eyes bugged out when my Sushi Deluxe ($20) arrived at my table. Ten pieces of wonderful sushi plus a Tekka Maki at that price? I'm betting that Hanabi is the best choice for sushi in all of Duluth. As if to confirm the above statement, my friend (a recent transport to Duluth via NorCal), subsequently sent me a photo taken at her birthday celebration. And they messed up my order (I asked for no cucumber in my rainbow roll - there was quite a bit of cucumber in it). Avocado was brown spotted as well. Very disappointed. We went to Hanabi after a very disappointing recommendation from a local. I had been to Hanabi before and convinced my husband to go there despite it being Valentine's Day. We knew it would be busy, and it was and they were doing the best they could. We decided to order online and take it back to the hotel which we did. Their sushi is so impeccable and over-the-top great. I have been eating sushi for over 40 years and this is right up there at the best I have ever had. We've ordered take out from here twice and overall it's good for sushi in Duluth. It is a solid place. Portions are good and food is alright. Nothing that will blow your mind. We've gotten around four different rolls and the stir fried udon twice. The neighborhood felt sorta shady around the time we went and I would zip in there super quick because it felt unsafe. The inside felt fine. The only thing is every time I ask if they can add hot sauce (sriracha) on the side, they charge $.50 for a little capsule. I had just stopped at another restaurant before that had no problem adding sriracha to my takeout for free. It just seems unnecessary for a sushi restaurant. Oh my gosh..SO GOOD! We have always had bad luck finding good food in Duluth. Man, we have given up and then we found this gem! I LOVE sushi! I lived in Japan and I can't get enough Japanese food in general. We started with the age tofu and tempura veggies and I was in love! Everything came out fresh and super hot! So good! We also ordered a number 9 roll, yellow tail with scallions roll, Alaskan roll and some sake. All were fabulous! The sake (salmon) was divine! I usually order two and let my husband have one but he totally didn't get one. The look of disappointment on his face didn't even make me feel bad-order your own! Hahaha! The 9 roll was perfect! The spicy Mayo on top just really kicked it up. We ate every last piece and if I wasn't over the top full at that point I would have ordered more. Our waiter (Hey Tyler!) was fantastic! Love the food. Frequent stop when in town, have been here 30+ times over the last year and a half. But tonight was the worst service I've ever had at this establishment. Having worked in the food industry I'm aware of the job tasks and expectations. The edamame appetizer came out after my sushi. My water was empty most of the meal despite the fact that there were 3 of 20+ tables taken in the restaurant. I tipped lower than I normally do, and the server commented "very rude" on her displeasure on my out of the door. I heard and went back in to ask "excuse me?" And she responded "sorry, nothing." Tips are earned, poor service equals poor compensation. Too bad because it's such good food, hope the service tonight was an anomaly. read more

I am, in all fairness, a bit of a sushi snob. I felt like Hanabi was passable and definitely scratched my sushi craving itch. The ingredient quality was good and the rolls were made properly. There were definitely some creative rolls on the menu, which I appreciated. That said, I felt like this sushi was just kind of average overall. I certainly would come back if I was absolutely craving sushi in Duluth. But for the money you drop on really good sushi, I'd probably choose other dining establishments in Duluth first. FWIW. So what did we order. We ordered our standard sake (salmon) and ikura (salmon roe) nigiri. They were fine, though I felt like the cut on the salmon was a little thick and a little less refined than you get at other sushi restaurants in other locations. For rolls, we ordered the North Shore Roll, the Duluth Roll and the Superior Roll. By far my favorite was the North Shore Roll, which was a really unique roll hands down in all of my sushi-eating adventures. It had tuna, avocado and salmon, pretty much my three favorite sushi ingredients, topped with seaweed salad and five different types of multicolored caviar sprinkled on the top. It tasted delicious and it was really interesting texture-wise. I would definitely come back for that roll by itself and maybe a bowl of soup as a quick snack. The rest of what we sampled was fine but not as remarkable. Overall - fine sushi. Recommendable? Sure. But craveable and something I would make a point to have when we visit Duluth? Maybe less so. But if you are craving sushi while in Duluth, this will surely hit the spot. read more

The restaurant was not busy at all, yet our waiter seemed not to be interested in taking care of us. One time I had to wave at him as he walked by. His response was, "do you need my attention?" and said in a way that made you realize he's having a bad day. My friend ordered a sushi plate that was supposed to have 15 pieces, what he got was 9. I came intending not to order any (lil iffy about freshness), but when I got here the place was jam packed and things looked ok so I gave it a try...If I ordered rubber it would have been ok, not fresh at all! The baked mussels were meh - different. The Angel roll was the bomb tho! I would have gave this place a higher rating but we didn't get acknowledged when we came in, ran out of cups...so didn't get drinks for a while. Prices are high, and area and parking isn't that great. I recommended Zen House unless you came for the bar or something.
