First time I have ever had curry and I was not disappointed one bit, I expected a weird flavor because I was experimenting and I was not left dissatisfied. Im going to come back and ensure I try their chicken rice bowl. 9/10 only because I was suggested to trying the rice and I wish I had tried their noodles. I am a ramen fan. So happy that someone recommended Zen house, being frequent Duluth visitors we tend to always go to the same place and sushi never comes to mind but zen house was great! I loved the wasabi wontons, thin crispy and perfect ratio of wasabi & cream cheese. All of the rolls were delicious but man I was really digging the fried rice with the pork fried cutlet, so simple but a solid choice for comfort food. Our server Jason was awesome, well apparently he's normally the sushi man but he was put to the test to help out the team being short staffed, he did great he was super friendly and attentive and pointed us in the right direction when it came to the menu. read more

Staff is super friendly, the food is amazing, and this is a don't miss place to be in Duluth if you like Japanese food. Our friend took us to dinner here and he got his regular bento box which looked awesome beautiful and delicious. My husband had one of the best sushi rolls he's ever had it had a deep fried shrimp and was topped with tuna and spicy mayo and a bunch of fish eggs. Sooo beautiful and delicious. As a gluten-free person there were few options though I enjoyed the edamame, miso soup, and a fabulous rice bowl chicken danburi. This is a small place and I hear Monday nights are very busy but it is well worth a trip. I'm not a Japanese food fan but my two boys were and we all enjoyed the beautiful space, the welcoming staff, and everybody of the delicious meals we were served. read more

One of the best sushi's I've had in Minnesota! I'm actually very jealous Duluth has this gem, but also glad because I now have a place to dine when I visit. I ordered the unagi 'caterpillar roll' and it was amazing. I don't think I can ever have a sushi roll without unagi now, it was so good! Unagi is eel glazed in unagi sauce which is sweet/salty. I loved how creative they got with the presentation, it was adorable! I ordered edamame, takoyaki (so good!) and miso soup which tasted like comfort. My friend ordered a sushi roll and mentioned it was also very delicious and one of the best sushi's she's had. We were highly impressed with the quality, taste and prices. Service was also outstanding, our server was very polite, attentive and quick. The restaurant and dining area feels so cozy I wanted to stay even longer. We will be back! We went to Zen House because of a recommendation from a local. We should have known as soon as we walked in. It was Valentine's Day, and we expected a wait no matter where we went. There was none. We were seated immediately. We went there specifically for sushi, which they had, but the majority of it had tempura shrimp or crab, fried fish of sorts, and on and on. We decided to just ave a couple of appetizers there and head out for some real sushi. We ordered the Tempura Vegetables and the Tempura Softshell Crab. Both were large appetizers, but that is the best compliment I can give. The oil they used was old and lingered in our mouths for quite some time. I watched other people eating and it was all brown, fried food. Not what we were hoping for. Raw fish was very limited on their menu. If you are looking for real sushi, this would not be the place. This is a small place with a family feel to it. The service is friendly and we seated quickly and treated well. Lots of menu options so there's definitely something for everyone to enjoy. We really liked the tempura and the sushi was decent. The ramen was flavorless and there was cauliflower, and too much of it, in everything. When we were there, flies were a problem and that detracted from our enjoyment of the meal. Seems like a good place for a quick lunch rather than a night out. read more

Zen house in Woodland is just the place to wind down at during the workweek. We've gone consistently either every week or biweekly and it's always been a great time! A few of the times we ended up only being able to show up 30 minutes before close and we were still given plenty of time to enjoy our food and weren't rushed at all despite our visit carrying over partially over closing time. I ordered a bowl of pork ramen with pork belly and mushrooms. I'm only posting this because if you love ramen as I do you should know that you will be disappointed. The broth was flavorless.. watery with not an iota of body or depth. I've made packaged ramen at home with more character. The pork belly.. I don't even know why I ate it and I kept thinking afterwards.. what was that??! It was dark and for sure a few days old. Regret. I heard the radio ads some time ago and was in the neighborhood for a dinner option. Easy parking in back. Made entry and was directed to seat ourselves. Very uncomfortable chair at the wobbly wooden table. Server lady followed half an hour later. No beverage menu to be found, no wine to be served only several strange out of date imported beers. Semi enjoyed the poke bowl. There was something strange about the ambience as if it was a harboring place and priority for man buns and flip flops. Kudos to all those that gave it five stars and please enjoy your bliss, you need to travel more. Know that there is no standard for the five star rating system. I really love this place. It's so convenient; I feel we should dine there more often. The service is top-notch, and the sushi is wonderful. The green tea is fresh -- they make the green tea sachets themselves from tea ordered from Japan. You can taste the difference. I recommend the curry with vegetables ramen and the seasoned squash sushi (truly delectable). We loved this place when they were located behind the gas station near the mall, but their new location is so much nicer. We'd love to keep them in the neighborhood. 3 stars for food, a negative -100 stars for service. Yikes. Our server didn't talk. He muttered an "are you ready?" when he initially showed up to the table and didn't say anything else. Ever. He brought the food and check and that was it. Never came back to check on us. Never brought us silverware (kinda crucial since its impossible to eat rice with the provided wooden chopsticks.) Never asked if we wanted to-go boxes, even though we had 3/4 of our food left on our plate. The worst service I've experienced in a long time and the food isn't good enough to justify it. Veggie tempura is good, but it's hard to mess something up that's breaded and deep fried. read more

Sorry to say I've downgraded my opinion. For years it's been a regular place for me for the Katsudon, starting back at their Haines Road location. Unless my memory is failing me though, things have changed some at Woodland. On one visit I got the dish and it came with longer grained rice, like you would get in a Chinese restaurant. The waiter said they use that because people expect it (it's MN after all and all Asians eat the same food, right?) I have to specify sushi rice. So I started doing that. On my recent visit, even though I asked for sushi rice, it came with medium grain rice. The waitress said she saw the cook get the rice from the sushi counter. Either way, it was not proper sushi rice. The cook also put way too much sauce on it. The flavors are still good and I've always liked the large amount of onion. I'm tired though of getting Japanese 'style' food that isn't prepared properly. I'll probably stop going for a while. read more

We were looking for some good Asian food while visiting Duluth and finally found this spot! The food was scrumptious and the decor was nice and space was clean. The service was friendly . The only odd part was we couldn't figure out where to park because it's in a strip mall type thing. As a vegetarian it was super easy for me to find food and they had vegan options as well. I love this place! So many options, and everything I've ordered so far has been delicious. I'm obsessed with the north shore roll. I've never had a sushi roll like it before.
