If you've been around the diving scene for any amount of time, you already know about Hanapa'a. These guys are the OGs. I've been dropping by every time we're back on the islands for over 20 years, and it's still the first stop off the plane. I will say though, service can be a little rough sometimes. Some days are good, some days not so much. But honestly, that's never been the point of this place. You're not coming here for some polished haole sales pitch of some sort, you're coming because these guys know what they're doing and they'll get you what you need so you can get back in the water. And that's where they really shine. Need a j tube? They've got it. Need a new band? They can fab it up in like 5 minutes so you can still make it to the spot on time. They almost always have exactly what I need in stock and at a fair price. You'll see some of the best divers in the islands and honestly, some of the best in the world just casually stopping in. The shirts and designs are also totally underrated. They've got their own local style and I've of course picked up a few over the years and they hold up good. Hanapa'a is one of those rare functional places you can always rely on. it's rooted in the community, and it delivers when it counts. If you dive, you already know. If you don't, this is where you start. Just don't be a Karen and you'll be good. read more

This was the first time that I visited this fishing store. The clerk was very friendly and polite. He was very knowledgeable of his stock and my needs. It took him a couple of minutes to find all parts to repair my fishing rod. I had all my needs filled and on my way in 30 minutes! The most important thing was the parts were very reasonable. Located in the industrial area of Kalihi off of Dillingham which the back side of the shop, but the entrance and parking is on Colburn street. They carry everything you need for fishing from hooks, leads, nets, lures, fishing lines, etc... Staff all had mask on and hand sanitizer located as you enter. read more

Came here a few times now and they always have what I need to gear up to do a little bit of fishing with my son. The amount of hooks and led were lost while we were whipping and dunking off the shore. They have everything I needed from poles, reels, lures, hooks, etc. They even provide repair services, but I've never used them yet. The staff are friendly and helpful. The parking lot is small. I was on a search for a new pair of tabis when the ones I currently have started to separate at the seams. Walked in to Hanapaa and there was a lady at the counter and a younger gentleman, both behind the counter. Both saw my wife and I walk in (store was empty) and both didn't even look at us or even greet us. The size tabis I was looking for was empty on the shelf, so my wife asked the lady if there is any in size 10, she shook her head no. I went there today to buy a reel. The young Filipino KID that was working there was rude, spoke under his voice where I had to repeat the question until I got a coherent answerand didn't make eye contact all the while I'm assuming that was his boss was to my left feeding his face. I'm hoping he took him upstairs after i left and either reminded him of better customer service or gave him a spanking and made him stand in the corner with both his shakas in the air. Regardless I purchased the reel anyway. Just a warning to other customers. Just hope whoever is behind the counter got laid before they come to work. Hanapaa second floor has basically everything we need. Their mask selection is the largest and they can find your fit. Our experience in service here has been good. Stopped here to compare prices to other fishing stores we visit. First we came on a Sunday which is great cause a lot of their competitors are closed on Sundays. They have their own parking lot which is good cause it's in the business area of Kalihi so I imagine it gets busy in this area during the week. The store has a lot of selections from diving great and light weight/big game fishing items. The customer service is okay. The young boy behind the counter was friendly and helpful, the older lady at the register wasn't. Some of their items are priced competitively to other shops and some are way higher so do you homework and shop around. read more

I am not quite sure why Hanapa'a has such a low star count.... My husband is an avid skin diver....with that being said, hes still relatively new to the sport. We have gone to many many stores on the island but this is the one we will make the trek over h3 just to go to. We have never shopped on the bottom floor since that is more for regular fishing, we always head straight upstairs and while the staff is usually busy or nonchalant, once you start to talk to them, they are VERY helpful, engaging and funny. From our first time here, we were treated like we were the only ones in the store and ended up talking to the employees about diving for over 2 hours. On other occasions they have sharpened my husbands spears for free, gave us great recommendations and are significantly cheaper in price than the base! We also went to the ocean expo and met Lance Ohara by chance. He was just casually talking to my husband about tricks, tips and the best gear for him to move up in the fishing game. Lance was so sweet, friendly and really helped my husband look at fishing from a different light. I love Hanapa'a and we highly recommend this store to all our friends and family. read more

So I was looking into starting to skin-diving again. I haven't done it for almost 8 years now. So after reading up on the forums and reviewing some of the equipment I was going to purchase I started to visit the various dive shops around town. Hana pa'a was probably the most helpful. I got to ask questions about the various equipment and the clerk gave me some honest answers. He pointed me to the gear he uses and not the uber expensive ones I was looking at. Came here looking for some reliable, yet reasonably priced reef tabis for some intertidal zone research I'm doing here on island. Looked online and found their website, but I was so glad to see they had a Dillingham location nearby! Called ahead just to make sure they had, and they were super friendly on the phone so I decided to drive there and check it out. I was surprised to find a wide range of style and sizes ranging from $35-80~. It was super organized and easy to find what I wanted (and I found that smaller sizes did cost less money, yay!) Overall would definitely recommend here if you're looking for some good reef tabis, and not those cheapy Walmart kine. read more

First let me say I am no fishing guru however I have spent many hours sitting in this place waiting for someone who is. I have also gone in to buy presents for which I had virtually no education or idea about products to be purchased and the staff here was really helpful! The staff is generally friendly and very knowledgeable. They are always willing to "talk story" and share their recent dives or recommendations on products. They have really been a great help purchasing presents. Their selection appears to be really good and is usually pretty consistent. One draw back? The store itself. It is old and looks like it could use a little renovation. It's a dive store though and in all honesty the divers/fisherman that come here don't care that much, so I guess neither should I. If you need diving or fishing stuff support the local economy and small business in Hawaii and come here. read more

We went in to get some spear fishing gear. It is on the top level accessed by stairs toward the right of the entrance. As soon as we walked in we were greeted and asked if we needed help looking for gear. Jordan and Ryan were awesome and helped us in getting a wetsuit, light, and other gear. Ryan is so knowledgeable and knows his products. Both were extremely friendly and helpful. We will definitely come back. They offer a good selection and these guys will guide you to what you need. Staff seemed nice and assisted in finding just the right product at the the right price. Just got into Diving this year and I am thankful for braddah Brad upstairs who always helps me with any questions or gear knowledge! He also does his best to save me money which any local braddah can appreciate. Recently I had a bent tip and went in to get a new shaft, Brad jus cut and sharpen the tip so i didnt have to get a new shaft.. BAD SERVICE!!!!!! If you're not a regular they will not help you. I heard so many good things about their products and figured we'd go and check it out. We get there and no one bothers to say hi or bothered to see if we need any help. When we finally asked for help they looked at us like we were amatuers. Time 0810, store opens at 8, sweeping the floors and keeping a clean store is fine, but between three workers and the owner not even a hi, hello, or good morning. I was the only customer in the store, was going to pick up a few items, but after standing in front of a display case wanting to purchase some items, and getting an occasional blank stare from one of the workers as my only acknowledgement, I put my other items back and left.
