(I am utilizing their free WiFi while typing all this up) At Hanco's they make good bahn mi, good bubble tea, and they can make me an order of summer rolls. Sometimes I order all 3. Sometimes I bring my laptot and browse the interwebs. Sometimes I yelp while I sip bubble tea and shove pork in my face. While for some reason I've liked my sandwiches better at the original Hanco's location on Bergen St., the bread here seemed fresher and tastier. I like this Hanco's much better because it's a nicer space. Their setup is smart, and I've been able to sit on my computer here for a few hours at a time before without any trouble. There's even a decent number of power outlets for those patrons who don't forget to bring the power chords for their computers. The staff is friendly and generally fairly quick. They are so nice, in fact, that even though they close at 9pm, I had been sitting and typing away for a while, and they closed the door and started cleaning up without making me close my laptot up and head out. I was there until 9:20, oops. I wish I lived a little closer so I could get my pork on here more often. read more

I really like the strawberry bubble tea here. However, one time I saw an old strawberry bubble tea sitting on one of the prep tales and was wondering if they would try to pass that off to me after I made my order. A few minutes later, my tea was ready and that old one was gone. When I asked if they gave me the old one, they said no, but as I drank it on the way home, I could tell the tapioca balls were soggy. Otherwise the drink tasted fine until I got about halfway through when it got really weak. Apparently, it had separated from sitting too long. So I was pretty miffed about that. I am going to ask for a free tea next time I go in. Still, I would recommend that tea, just make sure they don't give you an old one. I also have tried the vegetarian sandwich, which was pretty bland. Someone else there has the vegetarian soup and also complained it was not good. I am guessing this place probably has pretty good meat sandwiches and they don't know how to make good veggie versions. It's not an uncommon problem, so if you are a meat eater, I'd check out some of the other reviews. As far as service, the staff has always been very friendly. They do make all their orders in the exact order they get them, so even if you just order a drink, you have to wait for them to finish all the proceeding food orders. Really solid spot for Banh Mi. I ordered the original, based on the reviews on yelp. The bread is nicely toasted so that it is crunchy on the outside and soft and warm on the inside. The meats were nice and tender. The pickled vegetables were just right - still crunch but still nicely pickled, without too much pickle juice. Would absolutely come back next time. Hanco's reminds me of some eatery you'd find in a student center. It's got free wi-fi, table arrangements perfect for studying, reading, writing, or surfing the web, and a few couches in the back thrown in for good measure. Not to mention, it's super clean. Hanco's is more functional in its demeanor than other cafes of this nature as its basic layout allows for less distractions if you've got work to do. And they happen to make a mean banh mi - probably my favorite in the area. I'm no Vietnamese sandwich expect in any regard, but what I know is that the spicy Shredded Chicken does the trick every single time. The baguette has the slightest bite of crispness to it, the meat always tastes fresh and delicious, and the chili sauce kicks it up to another level. It won't be the spiciest thing you've ever tasted, but make sure you've got at least a water on hand. I'm not a huge fan of the whole meat at the bottom / veggies on top construction of the sandwich, because then it forces each bite to be one or the other, but you could do much worse in the complaint department. When I feel like going the extra mile, I order the Summer Rolls, mainly because the shrimp and peanut hoisin sauce combo is sometimes that irresistible. Even if they're closed I can smell the aroma while I'm walking home. Sandwiches always have fresh and hot bread. Cold noodles and noodles salad always fresh. Summer rolls also fresh. Never tried the pho as I'm Vietnamese and dunno how it would hold up against my mom's. (Heads up this place is Chinese run but is pretty authentic tasting still.) Lychee bubble tea is my go to. I seem to get delivery from here at least once a week. It's not the best banh mi I've ever had, but it's cheap and convenient. If you want to warm a banh mi after it's been in the fridge or something, here's a tip: take the pickles and cilantro out, bake the bread and meat in the oven for a bit at 350 degrees until it's warm, then reassemble. read more

This 5 star rating is honestly based on the vietnamese sandwiches that NY has to offer. Of course, it doesn't stand a chance against the Banh Mis in California so don't think I am a banh mi newbie! I've had banh mi saigon before and nothing was too special for me. Not so special where I wanted to come back and get another one. In my opinion, Hanco's is way better than Banh Mi Saigon. It's way more flavorful and even has the option of spiciness for you if wanted. Both times, I have ordered the Traditional Banh Mi, which I absolutely love. I mean, the meats that they use are definitely not the traditional meats that are usually used for banh mi's. But I guess their compromises and flavors in the sandwich makes up for it. I mean the pork is like ground pork instead of the hammy, pink fatty slices that are usually used. Other options are also available even for vegetarians such as veggie pork, veggie chicken, and sardines! Boba is definitely on the expensive side compared to Chinatown. I am so happy these guys have opened by me and completed my culinary collection with some awesome Vietnamese! I'd been itching for some bubble tea for a while and after a long day of wandering around Gowanus, my friend and I were ready for a snack! Pretty ill. I had the shredded spicy chicken sandwich - which between chicken, a crusty baguette, shredded carrots / cucumber and cilantro - covered all of the food groups in one meal. I will say - the only difference between "classic" and "spicy" is their addition of some Sriracha. Just order the normal one and add it yourself. Didn't really understand. The bubble tea was good, if not a bit overpriced. I tried the taro flavor, which can often taste kind of powdery and synthetic - but Hanco's pulled it off. I've only had drinks here; the bubble tea and the egg yolk soda (yeah). The soda was actually pretty good. A frothy combination of egg yolks, condensed milk and seltzer. It's sweet and certainly eggy, but beyond that I can only say it was tasty...if you're the kind of person who doesn't mind taking down some raw egg yolks and sweetened milk. On a personal note, my egg soda was partially ruined (okay, not ruined) when this guy I used to know walked in (with his old roommates girlfriend, hmm) and ordered some food while I was waiting for my soda. There is no debate for me, this is the best Viet sandwich in the city. PROS: -Amazing classic sandwich! -Also a green light on the summer rolls. -Solid vietnamese iced coffe. -Service always efficient, even when the lines get long you don't mind waiting a bit because you know they are working on it! CONS: -wish they did a chicken version of the summer rolls like Baoguette. -not the most ideal place for wifi work, but it is free. I'd say go for wifi only when it's not peak lunch/dinner rush, as tables get dirty from all the delicious food and turn over is high so you may feel guilty for holding a table too long. The pho is ok, but pricey. Skip unless you really need that soupy fix. The magic is all in the sandwiches! read more

It's pretty rare that I don't feel like cooking myself dinner to the extent that I actually succumb and get take-out, but last night i was taking an after-work walk around the neighborhood, was hit with a crazy craving for a really good sandwich and the recollection that my fridge was fairly empty. i decided it was finally time to check out Hanco's. When I arrived, it was delightfully uncrowded (i hate having to awkwardly linger while waiting for my order) and i could take my time pondering what to order without feeling like i was in the way. Though I was momentarily tempted to go with the rice vermicelli salad (didn't know they'd have that--so excited b/c i frequently crave it!), I decided on a spicy grilled pork bahn mi and an almond green team bubble tea. less than 10 minutes and 10 bucks later, I giddily walked home with my to-go bag with a huge pink straw sticking out of it . The meal was perfect (at least perfect at fulfilling my craving). I was in love with the balanced flavors of sweet (pickled carrots and radish), savory (delightfully seasoned grilled pork), fresh (cucumber), and spicy (jalapeno) all sandwiched between crunchy, but not unmanageably-so, bread. The bubble tea provided the perfect fodder for the considerable but not unpleasant spice-factor of the sandwich (note: i was asked if i wanted my sandwich to be spicy, so if you're jalapeno-adverse, don't fear), as well as served as desert. I've been here once so I'm starting this place off with 3 stars. I usually get my BMs in Chinatown. Banh Mi So #1 was a lunchtime staple when I worked in SoHo and I exclusively go to Paris when I'm closer to Canal now that A Chau closed down. The grilled pork sandwich was pretty good but it was way too spicy. Too much jalapeno and/or Sriracha. I prefer nuoc mam. I also had a Vietnamese coffee but they added too much condensed milk. There were 2 kids managing the counter so I'd like to believe that they screwed up the order rather than the regular, adult staff. PHO in PARK SLOPE?! PHO SURE! As a self-proclaimed pho phonatic, I was elated to hear that Hanco's is now serving the Vietnamese beef noodle soup!!! And since this is the longest winter known to mankind, I decided that tonight was the perfect evening to get phonky. To my surprise, the pho at Hanco's is not all that bad. Especially when you weigh the lack of options of any decent/authentic Asian soup noodles in the area. My biggest complaint is that the broth was too salty, but other than that, the hearty soup was pretty spot on, and the noodles were fresh. This doesn't beat any pho, say, in Chinatown, but it will satiate your pho cravings. Hence, I am inflating this review from 3 to 4 stars given the lack of options in the area. The reviews here seem kind of all over the place, which I guess is to be expected from a new place. I ordered delivery, and was pretty impressed. I'm no bahn mi expert, but the bread seems to be crucial in the sandwich. And despite the fact that I ordered in the rain, it still came to me a bit crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. I ordered the classic, since it seemed like a good place to start. It was fairly, but not overly spicy. The pork actually tasted like pork. I know pork should always taste like pork, but a lot of places kind of cover up good pork taste with condiments and stuff like that. The veggies added a nice kick to it as well. The summer roll was also pretty big. And there were six shrimps in it total, which is pretty good. Yeah, cash only sucks, but I'll be ordering from here again. read more

Okay Asian girls living in Park Slope, bring your yuppie white-boy boyfriend in here for some Brooklyn Asian fix, right in your hood! :) I was surprised at how good it was! The classic sandwich was my bet (first time in here!) and it made me think about it for a long time after! The ground pork was seasoned very well...and it was not messy. All packed tight and neat in the baguette! I'm no colonial apologist, but the shredded chicken sandwich--a blessed congress of French staple and southeast Asian garnish--is the apex of cross-cultural scrumdiddlyumptiousness. As much as I hate paying a premium for banh mi here when you can get a cheap and tasty banh mi in Chinatown for a fraction of the price.... it's pretty darn good at Hanco's. The Classic is the way to go. Perfect amount of pork, ham, pate and excellent pickled veggies on good bread. What more could you ask for besides a cheaper price? So my two Filipino homies Jon and Carlos are working at Lutheran Hospital & living in BK. They were both raving about the bahn mi @ Hanco's. They made it out to be so good that I found myself going all the way to BK to get a sandwich. It was me, jon, bob and peter and we showed up around 7PM. The place wasn't that crowded. We all got the classic sandwich, extra spicy. There was indeed a lot of meat. I thought the carrot/daikon relish was great. So refreshing. The jalapeno was not enough, considering I asked for extra spicy. Sriracha was readily available however, but I'd much prefer Jalapenos as my source of heat. The bread was good, not too chewy and it didn't mess up the top of my mouth. Me and Jon both went to UCI and Westminster is right next door. So I figured he knew a good Vietnamese sandwich. I think maybe I was expecting too much since these guys I respect were hyping it up. It was a good sandwich and good sized, but for $6.50 it better be. super average viet place... I definitely had better! I had the Grilled Pork Viet Sandwich and Match Green Tea Bubble Tea. The viet sandwich did not taste authentic at all. The grilled pork tasted like pork I can easily grill at home - they also do not give you a lot of meat - most veggies. The bubble tea was actually pretty good! I liked it because it was more tea than milk. Price here is a bit above average price. Their viet sandwiches are $6.75!!!! You can get a viet sandwich for $5.00 around 8th Ave or Chinatown. The bubble teas are $4.00 for a small and $4.50 for a medium. Overall - I probably won't go back here given that the price does not match the quality of food. I live in Park Slope and I eat out a often. This is one my favorite quick stop, inexpensive spots for lunch or dinner. Hanco's has consistently good, traditional Vietnamese sandwiches. They also have vegan options. As a vegetarian, I love their vegetarian pork sandwiches... extra spicy! Their Vietnamese coffee is great too. I eat here at least once a week. read more

As I write this, I am SO MOTHEREFFIN HUNGRY!!! But - I am waiting for my third go with a Hanco's spicy Viet sammich as soon as it hits 12pm. That is how *addicted* I am. First off, let me just say that I am from the south bay and San Jose, CA is the Viet epicenter of banh mi. Back home you can get like a pound of banh mi and all the Vietnamese karaoke you want for $10. Okay, but really it's as low as $1.50 a pop and pho and banh mi joints are everywhere. I was a little suspect of a banh mi shop in Park Slope especially on 7th Ave but I was delirious after my 6 hour bus ride from DC (on Bolt Bus, and HA! that's another review) and needed food. I even complained bitterly about the $6.50 in my head (and no, I do not own a $650 stroller or even have kids to put in one) but I was committed! And DAMN, when I got home - this sandwich is GOOD!!! It's so good, I'll even call it a $6.50 'sandwich' and not an authentic whole in the wall $1.50 'sammich' I've never had banh mi with mayo before and I think that non-native cholesterol pumped component is making it extra addictive? I dunno. I do know though that it was so spicy the first time around that it burned the inner lining of my mouth and the crusty bread cut into the sides of my mouth. Eating this is kinda masochistic...I like it!!! I've gone at off peak times when the lines when I went were non existant and the wait was similar to Subway's but the pay off, of course, was MUCH better. One of my favorite little places in 7th Ave Brooklyn. I find myself visiting Hanco's all year around. In the winter I have to have their Pho or sandwiches. I, for one, ironically, although spent the past 6 years in Taiwan, doesn't like bubble tea, but is very bias against every Asian stores out there who are trying to bank on the bubble tea craze. Came to Hanco's one weekday afternoon to try a Vietnamese sandwich for the first time. The place did not disappoint. I had an amazing shredded white meat sandwich that melted in my mouth with every bite. The food was very fresh and I plan to come back when in the neighborhood. The place is a good size for eating and they offer wifi at no extra cost. Try their bubble tea for a unique taste. I took one star off because it's a bit pricey but then again you are in Park Slope. You know how Subway wafts the (fake) smell of delicious fresh bread onto the street to lure you in, and then leaves you with a big sandwich-shaped pile of regret? Hanco's does the opposite. It just smells like garbage from the street, but if you fight your survival instinct, the sandwiches will knock you down with awesomeness. Well on my journey I am always willing to try new places. So lets see if this place really makes a great Banh Mi. So I ordered the #1 or classic spicy. The baguette was nice and toasty, there was plenty of pickled veggies. I mean there was veggies overflowing out the top all over the table. The sandwich was different compared to my experiences other Vietnamese banh mi's. What got me was the meat filling, it was sort of like a sloppy joe consistency without the tomato sauce and some slice turkey I think. So with an open-mind it was okay really not the best, but okay. Now I had the Vietnamese iced coffee and this was terrible, it really sucked. It tasted watered down and was not made fresh like the traditional Caphe Den Da. If you are gonna charge $4.00 for a cup of coffee you can at least make it fresh. It only takes about a few minutes for the hot water to drip through the coffee grinds. I have been getting my grilled chicken Banh Mi at this location because it is convenient and service is fast too. But to my horror this time I got a grilled chicken banh mi that has snow white chicken meat cut up into 1/4" strips. If this is grilled meat than they need to use hot charcoal. The chicken meat is so pasty and anemic? Good thing I took a menu and discovered they gave me the wrong kind of sandwich. I have only had 3 types of items at Hanco's. 1. Banh Mi: These are good, bread is crunchy and has substance, but isn't hard or dry. The fillings are great; crispy and cool pickled carrots and daikon, fresh cilantro, and fresh sliced jalapenos when they remember to put these in. The veggie pork and the real pork are both great, all the other accoutrements are solid, good pate, good butter. 2. Summer rolls, the garden and the traditional are both good 3. Bubble tea: taro bubble tea is good but maybe a little too sweet. Why 4 instead of 5 stars? Sometimes the pricing I am quoted doesn't match what the board says, they also ALWAYS forget to put in spicy jalapenos to make my sandwich spicy, to the point that I have to check before I leave the store every time. And the sandwiches are VERY good, and traditional (I like that NYC has all these super fancy super expensive mash-up fusion Banh Mi but at the end of the day Banh Mi is a simple street food and nothing beats good bread coupled with good meat and veggies. There are definitely some fantastic Banh Mis to he had on the LES, but Hanco's is no nonsense and they really pile on the pork in their classic sandwich.
