**CASH ONLY** I do appreciate that's the first thing they tell you as you walk through the door so you don't have to waste your time eating and then doing that awkward dance of asking whoever came with you if they have cash or having to go to the ATM, etc. However, it's very unfortunate they require that to begin with, but that seems to be the general consensus on all the reviews. Packed on a Sunday night, cozy - tight space, with about 8-10 tables (2-4 config) and high tops, a few seats at the bar. We lucked out with a table for 2, and quickly ordered our food. Friendly service and food come out quick. Friend had the pork chop pho... and I got the classic banh mi, pork spring rolls and shrimp chips. The banh mi was ok, the baguette was not the best version I've had.. it didn't have the crunch, it usually offers. It's skinny version. The fillings were good tho. Spring rolls were delish! One of which is a Vietnamese coffee, and it's not filled with ice like some other places. I actually use it to make 'espresso' martinis at home... The Banh Mi is great, a good balance of pickled veg and meat, and the paté is decent (my fave part). The pho is also very good, with the meat being well cooked and flavourful. I have tried a couple of their fish dishes also which I thought were fantastic, so I must order those again if I can stray from my regular order. However, this location has a few different offerings than that location. The restaurant is cash only. The service is okay. Sometimes, they kept coming over to take the order when we just sat down and plop the check down before we even asked for it. Other times, they would just disappear and not even check in. I am upset it took me so long to try 5ive Spice after a lackluster takeout experience. But our recent in-person dining experience was fantastic. The place is small, busy, and cash only, but service and turnover is quick. Our bowls of pho were phenomenal, super rich and tasty broth with perfectly chewy noodles and the right amount of beef and garnishes. We will definitely return to try other items on the menu. My sister was so excited to share the tacos at this spot. She had been raving about them and how everyone she's brought over to the restaurant loves the food. There were many thick strips of grilled Chicken---all severely overcooked. Another strike was the inclusion of just one small dressing which meant the entire bowl was dry. With very little dressing and overcooked chicken, this was a huge miss. I thought some of the flavors were pretty good and it could have had potential. I know from Vietnamese friends and many people online who all lament the lack of good Viet food in NYC that this place is probably not it. I'm almost certain 5ive Spice wouldn't pass muster for any of them, but for me and my plebeian palate, the banh mi, pho, and noodle bowls here taste pretty good. Another thing to note is that I don't eat red meat, so just chicken and seafood and vegetarian dishes for me, and that definitely affects how much I can comment on the restaurant's ability to execute well on the cuisine as a whole. All those caveats aside, I've dined at all three locations, and find this one (the original) to be a bit annoying because they only take cash, and who among us is carrying enough cash to pay for dinner? I'd come in here for convenience, and needing to take out cash inconveniences me. I really like that they offer crispy catfish as a protein option, which I've happily gobbled down in their banh mi and bunh vermicelli bowls.
