Super flavorful and filling dumpling & noodle dishes served at a casual, small store front. Service is super friendly and there were plenty of seats available on a Friday night. The dumplings are the star of the show here & as someone who doesn't eat meat I can tell you that both the shrimp and vegetable dumplings are a hit. They are stuffed to the brim and full of flavor so you don't even miss the meat. I also tried the vegetable noodles and it was really tasty. I ordered the shrimp har gow ($10) and the double happiness fried rice ($15). The har gow was just ok, not super flavorful, the shell wasn't as fresh and bouncy as I'd hoped. It came with an interesting fried frame. The double happiness fried rice was definitely more worth it for the price and yummy. There were 3 big pieces of tender pork belly, a flavorful green sauce, and a big portion. Glad one of the two items I ordered was worth the visit. Not sure if the other dumplings live up to the hype. It's a cute little place, and the staff is friendly. I ordered the pork and chicken buns which were both very tasty. To drink I ordered the mango boba and while it's alright, it definitely leaves something to be desired. I want to start off by saying that I am an impatient person, and I realize that. But because I realize that, I try to be more patient with things if that makes sense LOL. Anywayssss, you'll see why that matters in a bit. My friend and I came here last Saturday around 5pm. I went up to the counter to order to-go because we have a Shihtzu with us, and restaurants typically don't welcome dogs. They didn't have a problem at all with us sitting near the front door where there were two chairs meant for people waiting, which is definitely a nice touch. I waited about 15min before I decided that I've been patient enough. I asked one of the waitresses about my order. She asked what I'd ordered and came back 2min later saying that it will be another 5min. Ladies and gents, I know my dumplings and they typically take 5min to cook. So this tells me that in the 15min I've been working on my patience, they hadn't done anything for my order... (I was FUMING.) Also I don't want to claim that I know how to run a restaurant, but I've eaten at enough places to sort of know their inner workings. Typically carryout orders aren't placed in the order of arrival, rather they're typically moved up in the line because people aren't there enjoying the ambiance. During my wait, I saw multiple tables get served. I understand that they placed their orders before me. What bothered me a bit was that they already had food. I personally wouldn't have had a problem if they were empty handed and were served first, but because they already had food, my understanding is that restaurants typically wouldn't mind having them wait a bit while they fulfill takeout/carryout orders. I guess I should speak a little to the flavors too. Because it was carry out, it wasn't as crispy which is no ones fault. The filling had a lot of meat, I ordered the dry beef one which tasted almost a little like lamb? It was $8+tax+tip for 5. I wouldn't say it should be considered a cheap eat but it is on some cheap eat lists. The sauces were all standard out of the bottle stuff like Siracha, nothing home made which was disappointing. Overall, it could hit the spot if you're starving, but nothing to rave about. With the service I had, I doubt I'll be returning unless one of my friends really wants to try. The beef and Chinese broccoli was watery and soggy and had 4 pieces of fatty inedible beef. The dumplings were incredibly oily and that's sort of all you can taste when eating them. My pitstop snack at East Wind Snack Shop was a pure delight. I have been meaning to try it since it is a new addition to Smith Street. I wasn't aware it was table service so when I arrived, I was greeted and told to take any table. The menu included a variety of dumplings, rice dishes, beverages and snacks. Since I only wanted and craved dumplings, I selected the Vegetarian. They seemed busy and must take pride in preparing the dumplings as it took some time to make its way to my table. But when they did, my eyes looked at them dreamily. They were perfect and colorful, garnished with scallions and I think, edamame paste (not entirely sure). When I placed my order, I was informed that the dumplings were pan seared but with a steamed finish. A variety of hot sauces and soy sauce were on every table. As I took my first bite (5 dumplings for $7 and prices/portion size varies according to meat or seafood), I was in heaven. I loved how the dumpling was filled with lots of good veggies (red cabbage, carrots and scallions) from one end to the end. They were stuffed! The flavors were excellent and one side of the dumpling had a seared/crispy texture. I observed that the dough was ever so slightly thick/sticky. East Wind Snacks is a perfect place to get your dumpling fix without trekking to Chinatown. I'm so excited. I'm so excited...and I'm only a little scared. Here's why: 1. Anything new that opens on Smith Street gets me going. It's my backyard, and I love new places that will serve me food. 2. Anything new that opens on Smith Street that isn't Thai or sushi is to be celebrated. It's not that I'm opposed to Thai or sushi, the market is just oversaturated and we need variety. 3. I've been hearing about East Wind Snack Shop's delicious dumplings for years, but for some reason I haven't made the arduous trek...like a mile away. 4. The rumors are true. East Wind Snack Shop serves delicious dumplings. I walked in on Friday evening after my fair share of happy hour beverages (and my wife's share as well, seeing as how she wasn't drinking). As I went over the (nice and tight) menu, I asked when they opened. The dude behind the counter told me it was just a few hours ago. I knew I wouldn't have let something like this slip by me for long. The shop is small, with just a counter where you order, and a few tables (although there is a backyard, and it is backyard season) to post up and eat if you're sticking around. We ordered the original Juicy Pork Dumplings, the Dry-Aged Beef Potstickers, the Incredible Har Gow Shrimp Dumplings, and the Housemade Chow Fun Noodles w/beef. Just a taste. There was a slight hiccup as they initially gave us the Double Happiness Fried Rice (with pork belly AND Chinese sausage) instead of the chow fun, but I think we can cut them some slack when they are hours old. In actuality, I wanted to order the rice anyway (so maybe the guy at the counter is telepathic), but my wife was all about the chow fun and she doesn't care about anyone's happiness being doubled, least of all mine. We brought our food home, and I must say...these are very, very tasty dumplings. They are clearly high quality, made with care, and I have no doubt that I will be eating them on a regular basis. I'm normally a classic pork guy, but the dry aged beef were the winner for me. All were excellent though, and I love that each dumpling is completely unique, with the delicate har gow differing drastically from the other two. If I could change anything,I'd just ask for the addition of a dumpling sauce instead of just straight soy and sriracha. I love the vinegary kick of a classic ginger/scallion dumpling sauce. The chow fun wasn't exactly what I was expecting either. The housemade noodles were indeed the wide, flat ones reminiscent of a pad kee mao, and in actuality it resembled a Thai dish in a lot of ways (topped with bean sprouts, chilis, and more). The portion of noodles was actually smaller than I would've guessed, but there was plenty of the tender beef included, and the overall effect was definitely tasty. All in all, I'm looking forward to working through the short menu (should only take another visit or two), and finding out what Hong Kong Hotcakes are, and whether or not they're as tasty as they sound. read more

Read about the restaurant in Grubstreet and the chef makes 'Dragon Beard Candy! What is dragon beard candy? It's sugar and maltose syrup that forms a ring. From that ring, one stretches the ring and twist to form a second ring. The ring turns into many strands of rings. The point is to generate 12,000 strands of rings. So why is it called dragon beard? After all the stretching of the candy strands, it look like a dragon beard when you hold the strands up. When we arrived at the restaurant, we read that the dragon beard's is only available on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays on the menu. It was Wednesday, so we were disappointed. The waitress was nice while answering all our questions and checked in on us. The place is not big about 20-25 seats. The kitchen is in the back and the restroom (1) is next to the kitchen. There is a lot of foot traffic considering the restaurant's grand opening was this past Tuesday. We decided to try the following: Appetizers: (small paper containers) - Pork Dumplings (5) - the skin is a bit thick but I liked the bite size morsels. - Beef Potstickers (4) - didn't find this as tasty which I was surprised but it could be the dry-aged beef - Pork Belly Bao - the restaurant modern take on pork buns - this is open face bun though I ate the pickled pickles separately since it didn't go together for me. It's pork belly on bun -- can't go wrong. Entrees: (large paper containers) - Happy Buddha Vegetables - 1 side is rice with furikake (rice seasoning) and the other side is mixed vegetables including string beans, leafy greens, mushrooms, and bean sprouts. This was a bit bland though with a bit of soy sauce it was ok. - Double Happiness - Chinese sausage, fried rice and pork belly - this is delicious that we ordered a second one. Dessert: - Dragon's Beard Cotton Candy - Guess what! The owner, Chris Cheung, arrived and the waitress asked if we are interested in the dragon beard. Yes! He told us how he learned the dragon beard from his wife's uncle and it's a street food. For me, making dragon beard is an item that is becoming a lost art since it's time consuming to make and inexpensive ingredients. This dish is a fancier version than I have eaten. After the dish arrives, you should eat it quickly. This version becomes hard pretty quickly when it cools down though considering he learned it one year ago it's not bad. The filling is peanuts and sesame. Chris adds coconut flakes, peanuts and another item on top of the dragon beard and includes lollipop sticks to make it fun and if you don't want to get your hard sticky. All the food is served in take out paper containers (see pictures). Thank you for making the dragon beard for us and bringing back the art to NY! I haven't had it in a while and it was a treat. Some of my friends never had it so it was new to them. Another learned the English name. One thing: if you are sitting at the table by the door, the door doesn't closed automatically so if it is a cool evening like Wednesday night, it can get cold since folks walk in but doesn't close the door. I love dumplings, and having heard so much about East Wind Snack Shop having some of the best in the city, I had to try them out, and he the chance to stop by in December. The dumplings were very good, but the dry aged beef dumplings were my favorite. They were juicy and had a lot more flavor than the other dumplings my friend and I tried. The Double Happiness Rice with braised pork belly and Chinese sausage was also delicious, and was my second favorite item on the menu, next to the dry aged beef dumplings. We tried a few other things, but those dishes stood out most. They also serve an interesting dessert at this location; Dragons Beard Candy, which is almost like cotton candy made from sesame seeds, filled with candied nuts. The stringy, fluffy outside tasted a lot like Halvah, being made from similar ingredients. It's a Chinese sweet that's quite difficult to find in NYC, so I was pretty excited to try it. It was quite good, but prepare to have it stick to all your teeth like a mutha. But it was definitely fun eating, regardless. They're also still open for delivery / pickup!!! They have all your favorites on the menu - lots of dumplings, bao, and noodles. I went with just a few small plates - the dry aged beef potstickers and the "Gwaco" pork belly bao bun. The pork belly bao was interesting. Kind of an open faced bao. Kinda hard to eat with your hands without making a mess, so be sure to grab a knife and fork if you're grabbing it to go. Very generous pork belly portion with a nice sweet glaze. The beef potstickers were actually more bao-shaped than anything (very similar to Sheng Jian style pan-fried buns with the crispy bottom). Five to an order left me satisfied and satiated. Staff is super nice, there's a TV playing Asian game shows, and there's enough space where you don't feel crowded. Definitely stop by! read more

Been hearing great reviews about this shop from a couple of my neighbors, so I had to try it for myself. Their menu isn't huge, so if you're indecisive like I am, you won't have much of a problem. I was feeling more hungry than a snack, so I decided to order "The Shanghai Belly" on top of their "Dry Aged Beef Pot Stickers". I must say, their smaller snacks are definitely the star of their menu. I wasn't impressed by "The Shanghai Belly", but I did enjoy the potstickers! I was excited about finding quality dim sum yummies nearby by unfortunately EASt Wind Winsor Terrace didn't really make the cut for me . The portions were rather small and the pork dumplings were bland and very doughy..they could have used some chives to perk them up. The spring rolls were extra greasy and uninteresting. Also I do realize rents are crazy in the area but it still it doesn't leave a great feeling when you get a skimpy portion of just okay Chinese vegetables for 15 bucks. I suppose if you haven''t been to the Dim Sum places in Sunset Park or Flushing you might settle for East Wind but once you've tried the real deal it's hard to settle . read more
