BEWARE!!!! WOOD STOVE ENTHUSIASTS... After a long search in my area for an installer of a wood burning stove (purchased from a well known company) I found Hancock Chimney Service. All of the other companies would not install due to the fact the stove was not purchased from them.. Hancock would. Hancock Chimney charged $99 off the bat to come take a look, then they would send a quote. If I ok-ed this, the $99 would be taken off the total, otherwise you were out of luck - basically locked in. I was quoted $6,000. High end from my research. With obviously wanting the stove, I agreed to have them install. End of October 2022 was set for installation. They had called for the stove manual to be sent before installation, so it was HAND DELIVERED to them. Installation date was approaching and after many attempts to reach the installer to go over what I needed and when to expect the installer, I finally received a call TWO days beforehand. The installer ASSURED the 2 pieces I did not have (hearth & stove board) would not hold up the job. Morning of installation came and the two installers spent half the day measuring where to place the stove and looking in boxes of parts. They informed me that unforeseen parts were needed (couple elbows & straps). They were going to pick them up and return the next morning business as usual and get this thing installed!!! The office called the next morning.... $1,700 ADDITIONAL CHARGE, for the few pieces. That was the end of this disaster. Classic bait and switch.... To make this even more of a scam, they sent an invoice for $1,400??? WTF Having worked hard for a living, I understand paying the two workers for their time. But that is just unreasonable for what "labor" they did do (approx. 6 hours). They really expected me to pay a total of $1,499 for an incomplete job and a run-around. UNPROFESSIONAL! Shady company. Jason and crew showed up when promised and repaired our stone chimney exterior and replaced the interior heat shield/liner. When they finished, you could not tell they had been here, except the chimney exterior looked great. Mortar joints repaired and sealed, an old ash door removed and replaced with a stone that matched the chimney. They're coming back to work on our driveway pillars next. If you sit at home all day, everyday, and can wait until the afternoon of the day before your appointment to finally be told when your appointment is (without you having an option), perhaps they will do fantastic work. Otherwise, look elsewhere. Scheduled an appointment two weeks out, was told I could be first call on a Wednesday morning and have someone between 10-12. Was fine with that...received call mid-Tuesday afternoon the day before to be told between 3-5 pm (first person I scheduled with forgot to make a note). Gee, thanks, but no thanks. Have school pick-up in that time window. Tried rescheduling...to be told I could again pick a day (two weeks out again) but would have no idea of a service window until the day before. Sorry, life does not work that way and I could see this cycle lasting months of not getting a time frame that actually fits the CUSTOMER'S needs. Called elsewhere. Got an appointment at exactly 1:00 with a competitor. read more

Had them come out to do my fall time chimney cleaning. I should have planned ahead better because it took them a few weeks to get out :( my fault. But when they came out they were on time and did a super job. "Jason" also explained how I should get a cap for my chimney, and how to do it myself! Would have given zero stars but that wasn't an option. We paid to have the company come out and review our current chimney to see if a fireplace could be done. The service personnel came out and said they would review and quote one week later. Three months later after no correspondence back to us (no quote provided) we asked for our money back. We received nothing for their service but they still charged us a $100 service fee for inspection. Terribly disappointing on their lack of follow up and even more frustrated that they wouldn't fully reimburse us even though what we had requested ( a quote) was never received. Seal that Hancock put on my chimney crown failed and allowed water to enter. I had a real masonry contractor remove and replace crown adding needed expansion joint between flue and crown. Hancock should stick to chimney cleaning. read more

Be careful of their deceptive pricing tactics. They came out for a chimney cleaning, recommended a roof cap. Was quoted a price of $185. Sounded reasonable for the labor/time/parts so I agreed. After the job was done, I was hit with a bill of over 3 times that. The reason? The installed three. There was no mentioning of that in the quote. $555 is an absolute rip off for 3 roof caps installed at the same time. Felt extremely taken advantage of. Would not recommend. read more

First, my 4-star rating is strictly due for the legitimate inability to perform and exterior inspection (snow on a STEEP roof) as I would have given them a 5-star. The crew was on-time/date, totally professional and explained in detail of every aspect of and during the interior inspection. The flue had NO lining (which I was aware of), only masonry brick and explained that the fireplace chimney was dangerous to utilize and explained that in today's codes it is out of code (DON'T USE) to which I am in complete acceptance of due to the VERY strong possibility of a house fire (structure of house is in contact with the chimney, another code violation today). They also explained options and costs with several options that would make a safe use of the fireplace and meet current codes. Yes, it is sad that I won't be able to use the fireplace any longer, BUT I very much appreciated and respected their conclusions and the options are truly exciting (one, a wood pellet insert, far more efficient and clean). Fantastic work guys! I'll be looking forward to seeing you again in the Spring to inspect the exterior of my fireplace and furnace masonry chimneys! P.S.: When it comes time to sell your house, having significant issues like this to be within current codes is a significant selling point and can actually increase your asking price! read more

Had Hancock come out to clean my chimney and inspect it. I knew there was something wrong with the damper and I expected a cleaning would fix it or help the situation. First, I was told the would be there between noon and 2:00 pm. They did not show up until 2:20, I was not impressed already. Second, the were hired to clean and inspect which I had been told would cost $229 for the cleaning and they would do a free video scan as an inspection. It jus so happened that the damper was rusted shut. The tech that came to my house didn't clean the chimney or fireplace, and still charged me $179 as an "inspection fee" he told me all about how hard it was to carry a ladder through the snow and that he squirted some lubricant on the damper to try to get it to work. I needed a pretty basic repair to my chimney. I just had the chimney topper come down. I called about 3-4 chimney places and they were all "busy" for the next 2 months. I emailed Hancock Chimney Service with my issue and I received a call the next morning. They were available in the afternoon to inspect my chimney and address the repairs. It was all done in 24 hours. Very friendly, knowledgeable and quick service. I would use them again. read more

Jason has been taking care of our chimney for years. He and Chris called me when they were on their way, did fabulous work, and cleaned up everything. Much like our turning off our sprinkling system, we know that we have a window to be available. One year, we had a chimney fire and our insurance company gave us a difficult time. Jason (and Hancock) did a very thorough job helping us document and prove that it was a chimney fire. We are very happy with them and highly recommend them. read more

They came out to clean and inspect our chimney in a house we had just purchased. They told us it was unusable because the tiles were all cracked. They sent pics and an estimate of nearly $10000 to fix. I called someone else for a comparison quote and I was told there were no cracked tiles and that he had seen fake photos from Hancock before! read more

Hancock may do well at cleaning chimneys, but I saw them talking about clearing up leaks on your inside walls from the snow and ice on 8 west. I had them come to my house since I had a leak from the previous thawing. Two guys came out and said it would be $850. for the 4 ft. around the entire house. I said I would have them do the back section where my leak was and they spent 20 minutes charged me $250. for the service and another $100. for the de-icer they said I should have. THREE days later, my walls were filling up with water in the same spot. If you have issue w/leaking from snow and ice, I don't think Hancock is your company to call. I contacted the company and they said that since the weather is always changing, they can't guarantee that anything will be fixed. I am now going to call a roofing company and do what I should've done in the first place. Stinks that I spent $350 for basically nothing. read more

If there was a negative star, I would use five of them. Worst company ever!! "Cleaned" (and I use that term very loosely) my chimney and told me I couldn't use the chimney and gave me a quote to fix it of $9000. Got a second opinion and didn't need any work to use my chimney and they asked if I saw them clean the chimney because Hancock didn't do a very good job. Called Hancock back and told them about the second opinion. They claimed the other company didn't have the equipment or knowledge to do an accurate inspection. Customer service at its finest, or not! Asked them to refund my money for my inspection, that didn't happen and I told them I would be leaving reviews all over the Internet in return! Please don't use this company!! read more

I really wanted to support this local, family owned & operated business. Had used them for a home I used to own and they did a fine job (gas fireplace, didn't need much attention). Then I called them when I bought another home with a wood-burning fireplace... not a good experience. At all. Guy who came out was related to the owners and there was another guy with him. When they arrived I waited for them to come to the door, seeing them in their truck. When they didn't get out of the truck for a few minutes, I walked out, because I wanted to see if they'd be starting inside the house or outside with the chimney. The driver/relative opened his window about 1/3 the way, blew cigarette smoke out of his mouth, and said, "We'll be there in a minute" then he and the other guy continued to smoke cigarettes that looked like they just lit them. I am very anti-smoking after losing 3 very close loved ones to lung cancer, and this bothered me - as did them expecting me to wait for them to smoke cigarettes in my driveway before they got to work. My English Bulldog - smaller dog who weighs maybe 60 lbs and is very friendly- got out when I went to go back in my house. I ran out after him. The workers were getting out of their truck at this point, so I grabbed my dog so he wouldn't bother them. He's friendly, doesn't bite (ever). The driver said he was okay with dogs and I could let the dog go. When I did, my little dog was walking around the two guys as they were walking down my driveway to the house. He started to sort of jump up for attention and the driver kneed my dog in the chest (!) then looked at me, smirked, and said in a sarcastic tone, "Sorry." Completely unnecessary. I had told him the dog was completely friendly and he told me he was fine with dogs. I felt his kneeing my dog in the chest was entirely out of line - he was not being threatened or attacked, but met with a friendly dog with a wagging tail. The fireplace/chimney work I needed done included replacing stones inside fireplace that were broken and some falling out, repairing cracks in chimney, etc. Not one stone was replaced, and we had stones that were broken in half from when we bought the house a few months prior and several stones that were simply falling out and leaned against the sides of the fireplace inside. The "repairs" to the chimney cracks? The guy took a small tube of clear silicone/caulk and squeezed a line into 2-3 small cracks, and in the process dripped a couple gobs of the caulk onto my painted Adirondack chair, never mentioning it to me or bothering to wipe it off, so when I noticed it a day or two later, it had hardened on my chair. They put a couple pieces of flashing on the chimney - leaving an edge of it sticking out past the chimney. Not sure if this is standard, but it looks shoddy, like it simply wasn't cut to the right size. Overall, I felt the price was very high for the service provided, the guy I dealt with (the driver) was unfriendly and not professional in his actions with my small, happy, bouncy dog) or in his making it a priority to smoke an entire cigarette with his co-worker while I sat waiting for them to get out of their van and get to work. I read the responses from the owner to the other reviews, and the thing is, as the customer - paying customer - I don't care what the business' challenges are. Those are for the business owners to manage, not me. What I expect as the paying client is professionalism (didn't get it), quality, complete work (didn't get it), punctuality (half got it ... except for being second priority to a nicotine addiction). Sadly, I wouldn't hire this company again. Too much money paid for too little service, adirondak chairs with blobs of hardened silicone (or whatever), fireplace stones not replaced and left falling out, and being upset about the way my dog was treated. read more
