I really like Hancock! My man and I have been a few times since they opened and every time we've left satisfied. We usually get a whole bird "hot" or "hotter" and it's always been on point - really flavorful, tender and juicy. All the sides we've ordered have been great too - mashed potatoes, biscuits, waffle fries - but I would echo the other reviews and say that I wish serving was more generous for the price. Service was great when we dined in, and take out has been pretty good except the time they forgot the chicken. Caught it before we left thanks to the dedicated parking spot for pick up orders which is exceptionally handy in that neck of the woods. Great experience. Counter service was quick & easy, and we easily found a spot to sit for our group of four. Although, it filled up quickly after our party settled in. Really enjoyed my venture into the world of 'hot' chicken. It was incredibly juicy and the breading was thin with a nice crispiness to it. I also loved how they split the chicken breast, it made eating it much more manageable - could hardly tell it wasn't boneless to begin with. The sauce had a great combination of flavors - a little smoky with a subtle hint of sweetness... it also had a nice level of heat without going overboard. Our party tried the mashed potatoes/gravy, mac & cheese, cornbread, biscuits, baked beans, and pickles as side options. All were great, but portions were on the smaller side. I'd probably put this at a 4.5, but I'll round up to a 5 because I think Hancock will get there. This is a quick service restaurant: you order at a counter (or at the full service bar) and then take a number to your table. The staff was friendly, welcoming, and knowledgable about the menu. We ordered: - Half Chicken (Hot) - Half Chicken (Hotter) - Waffle Fries - Pimento Mac and Cheese - Biscuits - Lemonade Chicken: If you're worried about the heat, I'd stick in the Not/Hot range. I enjoy spicy food, and Hot got my nose running, but without the full on face sweats. Hotter was bring on the full on face sweats -- and as hot as I'd go and expect to enjoy the food. (Ie. I could eat Hottest, but it would be a Man v. Food situation). They also offer bottled and house-made hot sauce so you can create your own heat adventure if your preferred heat is between the offered tiers. Sometimes when you get into hot chicken, the outside turns soggy because of the oil used to get the hot chicken flavor, not the case at Hancock -- everything was nice and crispy. The dark meat was moist, although the white meat flirted with being on the dry side in some pieces. This seemed like an early kink, not a systematic problem. Sides and Drinks: Waffle fries came out room temp/cold, which again, felt like the restaurant working out the early kinks as it was mostly full on a Saturday afternoon. Mac and Cheese and Biscuits were great. The lemonade was great and they have free still and sparkling water on tap for free, which was a particularly nice touch. While the cups for the self serve water are small, staff come around to fill it up so you don't have to do a cardio workout to cool your mouth down. Nitpick: Hancock will do great, particularly as the patio opens up and the drinks start flowing. If I had one request it would be to create a couple of side options where jalapeños are optional -- not even from a heat standpoint, but from a pepper flavor standpoint. Their adult slushies will give you a serious brain freeze. They do a wonderful job of filling take out orders during COVID. Eating out is difficult for me as I am allergic to dairy, peanuts, and tree nuts. The staff here were so knowledgeable about the menu and what I would be able to have, especially the host and our server/bartender. They made me feel so comfortable about eating here and the food was great! I got the vegan chicken sandwich and tried something new- the collard greens which came in a flavorful broth! My bf got the hot chicken tenders and mac and cheese... 10/10!! Be careful, its spicy! Overall, definitely would recommend this place for both the food and the amazing service! Trendy area, great outdoor eating area with ping pong, Jenga and corn hole to play while you wait. It would appear that the chicken is made to order as the wait for food seemed to take a while. The chicken tenders- great breading and hand cut. You get 4-5 per order. I will say they were on the small to below average size compared to other places. You can get a variety of heat levels. The menu said that the hot is actually hot and you could request it on the side. What I didn't see on the menu or realize is that I would be charged and additional .50 for the hot oil to come in a sauce cup on the side. I don't think there would have been a charge to just get it applied to the chicken. Anyways.. the mashed potatoes were just ok. Nothing special. The waffle fries were on par with what you would be given at a chain restaurant and battered. The pimento Mac and cheese was decent but not finished. The lemonade was delicious. Canned pop at $2 . The biggest let down (back to sauce rant) was that the ranch that came as an up-charge was your standard sauce cup and literally half full. Not enough for an order of tenders and seemed like a scammy move. Not a make or break but noticed. Over all priced fairly for the portion $12 for 4-5 tenders and a side. Delicious!! There is no other place like this in Grand Rapids so I was very excited to try it. Their fried "hot" chicken is incredible and is highly competitive with true Nashville hot chicken. I ordered my chicken Not Hot but with their homemade hot sauce on the side and that was perfect. Their Hot Sandwich is also delicious. For sides I'd recommend the waffle fries or the Mac 'n Cheese (which is gluten free). All of their food is fresh made and can be made gluten free. The environment is so fun and exciting. The open garage door style walls create a great, fun environment! They also offer takeout which might be a better option on a busy Friday or Saturday night. We went for dinner yesterday and it was great! The atmosphere was fun and friendly. We sat outside, the weather was perfect. Games to play with kids if want too. Chickens was so yummy! Very tender and juicy! We got hot and hotter chickens, I like spicy but it too spiced even for me with the hotter. The sides dishes was delicious but very small portion. To be honest. It's ok. Was very excited to try this but it didn't live up to the hype chicken wise. We ordered chicken, greens, Mac & cheese, mashed potatoes and beans and two boozy slushes. The best part was the dark & stormy slushy, tangy, sweet and rum enough to know you were drinking, but not enough to make you taste like you were drinking free cocktails from a bucket at college decades ago. The southern sipper was ok-my friend who likes bourbon liked it. The service was friendly and fast. My favorite side was the Mac and cheese, creamy with just a bit of pimiento. The beans and the greens were good, not spicy at all and both a bit soupy. The mashed potato was bland and gummy. Now the chicken, which is what you come for no? The meat was moist and well cooked, but the skin/breading just didn't do anything for me. I'm not sure how this is possible but it seemed to have too much breading and not enough crispy, greasy, unctuous skin? Like the layer of skin had been shaved down before it was cooked? The crispy breaded skin is usually my favorite part of fried chicken, but not here. It also seemed under seasoned, needed salt and also something else. Maybe if we had the hot chicken the flavor would be better? Also the chicken breasts were pretty small and oddly globe shaped. The other pieces were normal size. On the way out I heard someone saying it's the same owner as Donkey, if true they are way better at coopting Mexican food than southern food. They have a nice little outside seating area that has big umbrellas, we were able to sit outside even though it was raining! The food was quick and delicious. Decision: If you're looking for somewhere relatively quick, low-key, and are calling it a diet cheat day, this is a great option. I will definitely be swinging through again. For those of you still reading: Hancock is designed around a fast-casual setting. Not a new concept by any means, but GR doesn't typically see this in new restaurants unless it's a major franchise. Needless to say, the atmosphere is chill. I have not dined in, but I did check out the dining area while grabbing my pick-up order. Online ordering is simple, so is calling it in. They were busy and it still only took about 20 minutes. The menu is simple, but this is a very good thing. I ordered a two hot chicken sandwiches, only one of which was for me in in this instance. I ordered hot and hotter. I can handle spice, and hotter was stinkin hot, so beware if you order hotter/hottest. Regardless of spice, the hot chicken sandwich puts Chick-fil-a and Wendy's spicy chickens in the "other" category for dining options from now on. And I'm a huge Wendy's spicy chicken sandwich guy. The sides were also good. Jalapeno cornbread is the best around, and you can top it with jalapeno honey butter. Waffle fries are just as you expect them to be, delicious. Mac and cheese was good, but not quite as good as Slows BBQ. read more

Tried this for the first time, service was great! I did order "hot" and "hotter" and I will say be careful because they actually are HOT! Chicken was nice juicy not dry at all. Biscuits with honey jalapeño butter,waffle fries and mashed potatoes with chicken gravy were so so good. Didn't get to try their slushes but the sweet tea was perfect! the first time I had Hancock in 2021 I wasn't too impressed which really halted me from going back. a few weeks ago though, during the first snowfall of the year, I was crazing some fried chicken and with Hancock being less than a mile from my house, it pops up on my Google food search's quite often. I decided to take a chance, brave the heavy snowfall, and give it a go again. We ordered some Fried Chicken Sandwiches and Mashed Yukons for carry out, which would only be 15 - 20 minutes. even with some careful driving there and back the food was still hot by the time we got home. the food itself was delicious! everything was crispy, flavorful, and just all atriums tasty! I enjoyed it so much that I went back the following day to order some of their Chicken Tenders. so far everything there has been delicious! the only downside is their carry out window system. both times I stood there for 5+ minutes after ringing their bell multiple times before someone came to the window. each time my order was sitting at the window ready to be picked up but inaccessible. not too big of issue in the grand scheme of things! read more

We placed our first carry-out pickup today. I tried the online ordering, however, it was lost, so we ordered in person. Traditional Chicken Sandwiches, served with nicely sized chicken, cheese slice, their pickles and special sauce was very good. Their Mac and cheese topped with toasted breadcrumbs and waffle fries completed our purchase. Service to our car was quick and very nicely delivered. While waiting I noticed a strong following. I saw a big picnic area with great overhead lighting and commercial grasses. Their packaging is very thoughtful with a bright white with red lettering Hancock. Ordered take-out from Hancock for the first time and had a pretty good experience. Ordering online was quick and easy. The site mentioned the food would be delivered to our car which wasn't the case. There's a tiny parking lot (2 spaces) off of fuller that is a bit tough to get in and out of, but it close to the takeout window. We were happy that the turn around time on our order was super quick, only 15 minutes. It was ready when we arrived. We took it home to eat and it was delicious. Unfortunately the fries did get pretty soggy, but the sandwich was perfectly fine and had crispy chicken. The portion size of the fries is pretty big for one person. I got the traditional sandwich (not spicy) and my husband got the hot, which he thought was pretty hot for being the first level of hotness. Overall the food was delicious and would get takeout again, but may consider a different side than fries. read more

To say that I love fried Chicken would be an understatement. And within that category I'm particularly fond of Nashville hot chicken. We love Bolton's in East Nashville and have been longing for a good hot chicken joint up here in west Michigan. Hancock isn't exactly Nashville hot chicken but it comes close and is excellent although their hottest isn't anywhere near the hottest you can get in Nashville. They do have an extra hot seasoning that isn't on the menu. It's sort of a secret and you have to ask for it when you order. Otherwise their choices are "not", "hot", "hotter" and "hottest." They also offer a bunch of southern inspired sides like braised greens, cornbread, biscuits and gravy, and lots of other things. They have a breakfast bowl that sounds amazing but we haven't had a chance to try it. It's sort of a quirky place, in a good way. If they're busy you put your name on a list and they let you know when you can sit. Then, when the time comes, you order your food from a counter and they bring it to your table. They have a no-tipping policy which is sort of cool (they claim that they pay their staff a working wage and don't need tips) and they have a self-serve water station where you can get still or sparkling water. The only chicken that I saw offered was bone in (which is they way God intended chicken to be eaten). The have a very limited alcohol selection but what they have is good. Our favorite was the frozen dark & stormies. Otherwise they have Stroh's in cans and a few wines including Spanish Cava (champagne method sparkling wine). I don't remember seeing any non-chicken entrees so you'd better like chicken if you come here. We loved it. Went back two days in a row. The bottom line: if you like fried chicken and southern inspired sides in a laid back original atmosphere thenyou'll love this place. UPDATE: we went back again last week and the manager told us that they are switching to full service instead of the whole go up to the counter and order your food system I described in my review. I don't know why they're changing it and I liked it fine the way it was but full service is nice too I guess. Less worky for the customer. read more

Really cool atmosphere, great for warm weather. The chicken was cooked very well, and was nice and juicy. Forewarning, if you cant handle spicy foods then just get the "not" severity of spiciness. I got the "hot" and I was sweating. The cole slaw wasnt very flavorful in my opinion, and it was quite expensive. The chicken definitely makes up for it however. The chicken was very good but still a bit too hot (at level 1 out of 3), and I eat a lot of sriracha. The mashed potatoes were in a small cup, ordinary, and seemed expensive for what you get. The chicken feet were really fun to try one time but I will never get them again. They are all bones with a little breading and fat type stuff. The service was a bit on the slow side and it was only moderately busy. Overall though we enjoyed our meal and the beautiful outdoor sitting area. read more

Average fried chicken. Good sides. Chicken was small, skin fell off, and it wasn't hot steamy crispy and magical. Some of mine was no longer crispy at all. Bits of chicken were tough and stringy. Either it wasn't dried enough before frying, sat for a while, or perhaps fried at the improper temp. Ordered the hottest, which wasn't hot enough for "hottest" in hot chicken terms. It was sort of spicy and had great flavor. Needs to go up a few levels though if you're gonna call it hottest and serve it with protective gloves. Probably about the level of heat as Habanero Tabasco (but not the same flavor) if you're familiar with that. Maybe 7-10,000 scoville units? Weak. Hattie B's Shut the Cluck up is perhaps 3-4x the heat for reference. Sides were really good. Great pickles, good greens. Waffles fries and Mac and cheese also good. Unfortunately the chicken is one step above KFC and 5 giant leaps below The Southerner in Saugatuck. The Southerner is one tiny step below Hattie B's and Princes in Nashville which puts Hancock chicken somewhere in mediocre purgatory. Buddy had a boozy slushy which was really really good. Overall. Each had 4 sides. Way too much food, but let me tell ya - best fried chicken in GR and maybe MI. Got half regular, half hotter, and a whole hot. The hot was hot and the hotter was amazing.
