Have not had Hanco's in over 2 years because Nicky's used to quench my sweet pickled thirst for Banh Mi within the area. However today my co worker and I hopped on the bus en route to Smith street. Hancos is pretty awesome. They used to be around the corner at a hole in the wall next to van leeuwen. But New Yorkers have a way of discovering a good thing. When they moved to smith st they got a larger sit down space in front. Meanwhile they only marginally upped the prices! To my mind they are one of the best deals on smith st. Consistent & tasty. I'm officially obsessed with Hanco's vermicelli bowls with vegetarian chicken. I always order this when I'm in the area. Pro-tip: When you dine in, you get a LOT more food than what fits in the to-go container. I learned that today when I decided to enjoy a late lunch here. The vermicelli bowl is filled with cold rice noodles, a big bed of leafy greens on the bottom, jicama, carrots, cucumbers, delicious fake chicken (seriously tastes so good), crushed peanuts and garlic chips. It comes with fish sauce which I pour all over and this bowl is seriously the tastiest thing. Incredible filling for a meal less than $10. Go here! read more

I am not a Vietnamese sandwich expert. These sandwiches are awesome. Period. You don't have to be an expert in anything to get this. The first time I dropped in, I got the Classic spicy & I kept thinking about it until I went back to get more. Such fresh and tasty flavors...the pate is scrumptious & it's overall bangin'... The vietnamese coffee is authentic (wonderful iced), and the bubble milk tea is really good--the tapioca pearls taste non-fake & while it's sweet, it's not overly sweet nor watery. The first time I got the summer rolls they were delish. I got them a second time but had to return them bc they smelled off...but it was prob the hottest day of this summer so I forgive them. Unless it happens again, which I am optimistic it won't. It also makes me happy that this place is in Brooklyn & that it's so easily accessible by the F/G train. Keep up the yummy work, Hanco's! I was craving some warm soup to make my cold symptoms feel better. I was sneezing all day and even had to call in sick. I found this spot and ordered some pho. The broth was very oily and tasteless. I did not taste the type of broth where it takes hours and hours of prepping and cooking. The vermicelli had a nice chewy texture, however, I had to put lots of hoison and some hot sauce (can't put so much because I was sick) to make the broth to have some taste. I had never tried banh mi before, but now I am sure glad I did! I got the pork chop sandwich, and it was DELICIOUS. It was sooo delicious that I was inspired to come post a review on Yelp about it, and I think the last time I posted a review was 4 months ago... it's that good. The combination of pork chop, mayo, butter, pickled carrots, daikon radish, and cilantro was like a flavor explosion packed with just the right balance of sweet and spice (I got it medium hot). After every bite of the sandwich I just couldn't stop thinking, "This is delicious!" My initial impression was that the sandwich was kind of small and I'd probably need to supplement my dinner with something else... but looks are deceiving. It was surprisingly filling, and an excellent deal at only $4.25. I can't wait to go back and try the other varieties. Plus the staff was pleasant and courteous, and I only had to wait 6 minutes or so while they prepared my sandwich. Came here with my boyfriend to try out for the first time. I frequent the area all the time and somehow never noticed this Viet sammich/bubble tea place. I love both so I had to try it out. Firstly the coconut bubble tea was great. "Quickly" in Chinatown is usually my go to spot for bubble tea but I liked this one much more. It tasted more natural and had the right amount of sweetness. Now the grub was kind of a mixed bag. I had the chicken sandwich which I thought was the bomb. Even the mild is slightly spicy but I don't care. It tasted very fresh. All the veggies had a nice crunch. The chicken was good. (Though I prefer a more burnt barbeque-like flavor). My lady had the "classic" which had pork and possibly some other type of meat if my memory is correct. She said she didn't like it but I'm not going to detract from my rating for her review as I didn't give it a taste. We both had the Rice Vermicelli after a recommendation from the counter person. This was the only weak point. The Rice Vermicelli was so bland. It was like eating plain pasta. We had to dump in all of the included sauce to make it "decent" enough to eat but it was still pretty bland. We were both wondering why the person recommended it to us. Prices are good and we had this big feast for about a 20-spot. Mixed experience but mostly good food for a good price so I would recommend it and eat there again. read more

Definitely a fan of this place! Came here this past weekend with my girlfriend and friend to find the place totally packed! We ordered our food quickly and painlessly, and were able to grab a seat without any issues. The food came out quickly, too! I had ordered a grilled chicken rice entree, and my girlfriend ordered the shredded chicken sandwich. I personally love this kind of stuff, and was already setting my expectations pretty high! The rice entree bowl is about the side of a traditional ramen bowl, half filled with salad, half with rice, topped with some cabbage slaw and your protein. It's a pretty big serving for the price, which I'm totally a fan of, especially considering the options in the area. The chicken, unfortunately wasn't the best I ever had. It tasted almost like a kind of better-made mall food court chicken, but the real taste maker was in the rice, salad, and different sauces available. My girlfriend had the shredded chicken sandwhich, but was a little let down to see that it wasn't so much shredded, but just cut up into slightly smaller chunks then what I had received. More bland then the grilled chicken, the sandwich was good, but nothing impressive. The bubble tea we all got was excellent, though. Definitely some of the best I've had, for sure. I love that they do warm bubble tea, and their menu is pretty huge, too! I'd definitely come back here again, but would totally order something else. I think banh mi sandwiches are on my top 10 list of favorite foods. With that said, I think that New York is sort of lacking in really amazing ones. I have tried all the usual suspects - Nicky's, Banhi Mi Saigon, Banhi Mi So, etc. and while they're all good, none of them are mind-blowing. Out of all the ones I've had in NY though I think Hanco's is my favorite (but I'm still searching). Quick note - the people that own and run this place are Cantonese, not Vietnamese. I'm not sure how much that matters but I thought it was worth pointing out. I always find it a little strange but I guess it doesn't really matter? I've had both the pork (classic) and the tofu and they both had their merits. The tofu one is way better than any vegetarian banh mi sammie I've had at other places. They use firmish tofu instead of tofu skins so it tastes more substantial. The pork one was really flavorful - the pork was kind of crumbly - I don't know how else to describe it but the important thing is that it was good. These sandwiches are addictive; I'd have them for lunch every day if I could. Though they're not the largest, they're more than enough for lunch, and the price is certainly right. If you're coming during peak times, do yourself a favor and call ahead; they do get busy. The spicyness does vary a fair bit from order to order, but that's my only mild complaint -the ingredients are always great. read more

The Bubble Teas are fantastic! The staff was very lovely and friendly. I even had a chat with the manager-type person about the preparation of tapioca pearls! Which was wonderfully enlightening. Very disappointed with this spot. Was one of my favorite spots in the area precovid but the staff and food quality changed. The staff cooked their food first and sat eating while my order took 20 mins for a rice entree and a sandwich. My order was brought out with the person that ordered 15 mins after my order. This place has perfectly good Banh Mi, which is all Ive had there. I would ask for extra hot cause the emphasis on the Vietnamese mayonnaise makes for a pretty tame sandwich. My main gripe, and the only reason for 3 stars is that the place closes so damn early, even on weekends. With its location on Smith st, Hancos should be ideal for drunken late night visits, but just like everything else on Smith except diners, its closed. also I would say that Hancos is basically identical to Nicky's on Atlantic, and since both close so early its a wash. read more

It was sooooooo cold out and I was HANGRY! I've been wanting to try Vietnamese food and saw this place so I stopped in. I ordered the grilled chicken Pho which was perfect! Huge though. Geez, I could've fed my family of four with this meal. The broth was tasty and the basil included gave it such a great flavor. This is the kind of food you want to write a song about. Like a song has many notes or even layers of depth, this sandwich does too. You've got the spice, the sweet, the bitter and the freshness all in one bite. Hanco's has become one of my favorite spots to hit up during lunchtime. It's a bit of a walk from work, but since I'm pretty speedy I can make it there and back with time to spare. The inside is small and from what I've seen so far... always packed. And for good reason. These sandwiches are pretty damn tasty. Hanco's has a nice variety options on the menu -- salads, vermicelli, pho, bubble tea and of course... their Banh Mi. At $6.50 you get what you pay for. Like others have mentioned, at a first glance the Banh Mi looks small but it's in fact packed to the max. I've had the shredded chicken, classic and pork sandwiches... all equally delicious in their own right. If you want wheat bread (like I always do), they have it. And my favoriteee feature: choosing mild/medium/spicy. Spicy it is! Their hot sauce surely packs a punch so beware. The bread is super crispy, hold the insides well and everything juicy/flavorful. Everyone knows Hanco's around here because the place is solid. My review is going to be simple and straight to the point. It's the mock chicken. If you're going to offer it as a vegetarian alternative, please make it taste good, otherwise it ruins your otherwise beautiful bahn mi. I don't know if they microwaved this stuff but it was just nasty. I could and should have returned it but was short on time and needed to eat. I am trying to increase my spice tolerance but I felt spicy was too much for me..he on the other hand looooves spice but true to his bestestet friend title decided he would add the heat on at the table...via the bottles of liquid fire AKA sriracha. I took my first bite and I was hooked. Man oh man this stuff is great!!! The pickled veggies add the sweet and coolness for a heat punk such as myself. As some other reviewers stated it is kind of constructed in an odd way with the meat to the back so I had to open it up and re-modify it so that each bite was a perfect one. I also ordered the lemonade and we split a Vietnamese iced coffee which is so strong and yummy I could drink it everyday. This Hanco's is just as good as the one in Park Slope. I asked for a grilled tofu this time, wanting to avoid pork and meat for one day. I know, what was I thinking?? The soft, chewy bread with a buttery crunchy exterior, filled with (extra) spicy tofu and fresh pickled vegetables. This sandwich hits the spot every time, and I always say I want bubble tea but everyone who knows me knows I have issues with drinking (nonalcoholic) calories. I had high hopes for this place but was sadly disappointed from the first bite. I ordered the Chicken sandwich and my husband ordered the pork chop sandwich. The chicken was way too salty, the pickled carrot was soft and was lacking in flavor. It wasn't terrible but it was nothing like the amazing BBQ chicken sandwich Baoguette does in the East Village. My husband was also disappointed with his sandwich, nothing special. We also ordered drinks- Vietnamese iced coffee and a coffee bubble tea. Both were WAY too strong and I usually love strong coffee. I really like this clean, modern banh mi spot. Yes, there's a certain thrill in getting a mystery sandwich from a dark dank counter but other times you just want to go somewhere nice. I think their banh mi is the best one I've tried in the city and maybe better than the street ones in Saigon. The bread is warm and spot on and the meats are all delicious. The bubble tea is good, nothing different from usual bubble tea but definitely good. It's nice that they have soymilk as an option. Almond milk would be nice but at least I don't get a stomachache from a bubble tea. Crowd is definitely on the families with kids side but you're a bitter fuck if you can't deal with that in a quick serve place. Like many people, I consider a willingness to share to be good thing, and for the most part, I do share. I frequently offer bits of my latest food discovery to friends and family. Since I do not live near Hanco's, I make it a point to stop by whenever I am in the area, typically on the way to somewhere else. Unfortunately, I may have someone else in the car.
