Two words, pretty awesome. I think about popping into Hanco's every time I head for the Bergen st. stop. The shop is small, with a few seats (translation: no bathroom for you) and a friendly staff. I have only been to a few banh mi places in NY but this is the only one that I would willingly stuff one down my tummy even when I'm not hungry. Ah, the gluttony. I have tried all the variations except the chicken, vegetarian and the sardine ones, they were all thumbs up. Their spring rolls are alright, nothing to write about. Bubble tea is ok too, although I obviously prefer Ten Ren's better. So apparently Hanco's Vietnamese sandwiches are slightly overpriced but I'm ok with it. Why? Because it is delicious and good enough to fill you up under $6. You get ripped off most of the times when you go have brunch, but hey... you still go for it. read more

Sometimes ignorance is a wonderful thing. There is beauty in not knowing. - I don't want to know what goes on in the kitchen of my favorite restaurants. - I don't want to know if she's faking it (although ladies, sometimes the snoring is a dead giveaway) - I really don't want to know how cheap a banh mi sandwich is on the West Coast or Canada. It's hard to get 2 slices of pizza or fast food for less than $6 , but for $5.50 at Hanco's you get a pretty kick-ass sandwich. Besides being cheaper than fast food the abundance of fresh veggies makes me feel like I'm eating healthier. The pork is well seasoned and never greasy, the bread is fresh and they never over do it with the mayo ( I'm not a fan of mayo drenched sandwiches). Only two shortcomings i can think of : 1. While I'm not familiar with West Coast pricing I do know you can get a larger and cheaper banh mi in Chinatown. Saigon Vietnamese is hard to beat for $4.25 2. Balance of meat & veggies. Scroll up to peter d's review for explanation. Too lazy ? Okay. They seemed to put veggies on one side meat on the other. You can't eat meat & veggies together in single bite. This may be good if you ordered a spicy sandwich and are using veggie side to cool down. Or maybe if you sharing sandwich with a vegetarian. But for the most part the balance seems off. $5.25 for banh mi?! Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas any more. I'm used to paying $2.50-3.50 for banh mi in DC and Boston. Excellent banh mi, to boot. And usually if you buy 5, you get one free. At $5.25 per banh mi with no volume order discount, this banh mi had better contain kobe beef, foie gras and filet mignon. Alas, it did not. I had the classic with medium spicy sauce, extra butter, no veggies. The roasted ground pork made the banh mi very sweet. The vietnamese ham and pate tasted fresh. The baguette was too chewy. It was a few inches shorter than the average banh mi but it was packed with meat. It was very flavorful but I feel like Hanco's caters to a western palate. The owners of Hanco's speak my language and I'm not Vietnamese. It's Cantonese-owned and run which further detracts from the authenticity. The place is small but efficiently run. There are a few small tables. Hanco's seems to be the only banh mi shop in the hood so hopefully more will pop up soon to drive the price down. read more

At first glance, this may look like just a sandwich shop, but Hanco's serves up the type of food that will haunt you. In that maddening craving, dream-about-it way, not the haunting you get when you go out of town to visit less than gourmand relatives and get stuck eating at Chilis. The classic is a large, crispy crust baguette piled high with pork, vietnamese ham, pate, cilantro and marinated carrot and daikon salad. At less than $5 a pop, it's the best bargain on this block and tastier than most of the other offerings nearby. The bubble tea is loaded with boba -- Hanco's serves up at least double the portion of chewy, tapioca beads as Beard Papa. You can't beat that with a stick. About a year ago I was looking for apartments in Carroll Gardens and the broker was telling us about spots in the neighborhood. I had been to the neighborhood for years, but had never noticed Hanco's just off the very busy Smith St by the F/G Bergen subway stop. The broker claimed Hanco's had the best sandwich he had ever eaten in his life. At the time I shrugged it off, but found myself in the area a couple weeks later and decided to give it the test. After all, how good can a sandwich possibly be? I ordered the spicy chicken sandwich and it was absolutely amazing. Not just amazing, but amazing. As in, amazing. Since that moment every time I think about Hanco's I immediately begin salivating like a rabid dog. Ok, that's probably a bad metaphor. I've since tried all of the other sandwiches on the menu as well as several of the appetizers. I highly recommend the spring rolls. The mango bubble tea is very good as well. It's a little blasphemous of me to love their pho as much as I do. It's so wrong. Why? Because you can choose what kind of broth you want, with what kind of protein. Egads! It's also been a looooooooong time since I've had pho outside of Hanco's that I can actually call "good". So maybe my pho barometer is a little shot. But eff it, I need my pho fix. If it's cold outside, if I'm sad, if I'm in the mood for something warm but light, I turn to pho. And the fact that you can mix different broths with different proteins. Sometimes instead of beef on beef, I want a beef broth with tofu. As of late, I have been going for a vegetarian broth with tofu (though vegetarians, they have vegetarian meat). And it's still good! It doesn't just taste like salt! And the noodles are the right kind! Side-eyeing you, every other pho place I've tried in NY. There are layers of flavors in broth. Admittedly, it is not quite love that's in it, but maybe a "like you a lot" feel. The price is *decent* as well (decent for NY, not SoCal): $9.25 with tax. For some reason it's a few cents more expensive than their Brooklyn Heights location, but that location doesn't have vegetarian broth. Admittedly it's been a while since I've had their sandwiches, but I can't imagine it's changed too much. It's decent. It's no Lee's sandwiches (I really miss the ridiculously hard bread...), but it'll do. And the boba is pretty darn good. They have a "rewards" card for pho, sandwiches, and boba, which is a little annoying that they're all separated. But if you go there enough, it just might be worth it. I haven't tried their other stuff. Because honestly, I just needed a pho in my life that's decent, that's easily accessible, and here we are. Also, I don't know if this matters to any of you (maybe only to the true pho-ers), but they are Chinese-runned. now that was good. I have never had a Banh Mi sandwich before so this was the perfect spot for Jim and I to hit up before attending the Yelp Elite event. For $5.50 you get a generous helping of spicy ground pork, carrots, cucumbers, pate and Vietnamese ham. I mean this sandwich was literally bursting at the seams. I love their food, especially the tofu sandwiches, so I was happy to see they had opened back up for takeout and delivery during the Covid crisis. I stopped, called them (as it say to do on a sign in the window) and was surprised to hear from the person who answered that they only take online orders, and only at their website. I love this place. It's not as good as the Vietnamese places in San Jose, California or as cheap but then that's cause there isn't a huge population of Vietnamese people in NY vs. CA. - Clueless Kitchen Spitter- I've been to HANCO's a few times and I was ready to make it a regular take out spot, but then I saw something that I couldn't forget...and even worse was the staff's response to it. On a busy Saturday night in December, I waited for my order near the front, with a view of the kitchen. I was taking off guard as I watched a chef drink from hit soup container cup and then spit out what he was drinking in the middle of the floor, near the stoves. He then went on to fill up his cup like nothing was wrong. I could not believe he was spitting ( and not small spit) in an active kitchen around open food! When I brought to the attention of staff, I was told there was no manager on staff... and this was a busy Saturday night?. The young staff might of been in shock , or just clueless about customer relations, because they didn't apologize, they just looked me baffled. This tiny little sub shop delivers, no question. The subs are served on crunchy, chewy baguette and are heaped with cilantro, cucumbers, shaved carrots, and, in my case, perfectly cooked tofu. But if you prefer chicken or pork that is available as well! They are dressed with a sweet, tangy, slightly vinegary dressing. YUM! The best part about these subs is that they cost less than $6! Yelpers who claim that Hanco's is the best have either never been to Ba Xuyen or are not Vietnamese. However, Hanco's is still pretty good! They both have a fantastic authentic baguette, but Ba Xuyen also has authentic trimmings (right down to the Vietnamese mayo, pate, and head cheese). Ba Xuyen's spring rolls are more delicious, and they serve the best avocado shake ever! I tried Hanco's Vietnamese iced coffee and didn't like it too much. Hanco's classic sandwich has roasted ground pork instead of roasted pork slices. I have to say that the roasted ground pork at Banh Mi Saigon is much more flavorful but the baguette is not as good. Bottom line, I'm going to stick to Ba Xuyen, but I wouldn't mind Hanco's if I was in the area. read more

It turned into a problem, quickly. That's how good these damn sandos are. I had to quit cold turkey. I'm super sad about the self imposed ban, but what's a girl to do? Good, but there are definitely much better, more authentic places than Hanco's. I got the original, but it tasted more like a Cuban sandwich than a Vietnamese one. (Note: Hanco's is run by Cantonese folks.) Real Viet sandwiches don't use lunch meat. Hardly noticed any pate, and the whole thing was really just too... juicy. Mushy, even. Ba Minh with butter and mayo????? Is this MORE or LESS traditional? Somebody Vietnamese, please answer. Maybe next time I'll ask for "light" mayo and butter, but even a hefty slathering of mayo and butter doesn't stop this sandwich from being delicious. If it's a departure from pure French Bread meets Vietnamese Condiments gastronomical infamy...if it's an entire creation unto it's own...if it makes purists run for the hills...or if it's the recipe of champions but done without reverence to it's roots, this all matters not! It's delicious. Like I said...all my Ba Minh has been dry, which I love. Good French Baguettes as Ratatouille wonderfully points out must be measured by the "crackle"...and the crackle is always present in Ba Minh because there is always pride in the gift of the French...that wonderfully airy loaf of bread that starts out in tact and then crackles under the pressure of your hands, your bite and turns chewy! Enough on bread...even though good bread can make or break a sandwich. The meat is different here too... We tried the grilled pork and the sardines. Next time the Classic must be tried because I've never heard of ground pork, Vietnamese ham and pate on a Ba Minh...let alone worthy of being touted "the classic". The grilled pork was savory BBQ'd strips folded one over another...very tender...very delicious. The sardines weren't too salty and mashed up with a slathering of some mayo...also very delicious. In the words of Pete Schwetty "quick plug"....... I need to say: quick plug for SARDINES! Hey people...start eating more sardines! They are a great source of protein and very delicious...help remove the stigmatism associated with sardines. Sadly the last US Sardine Cannery just closed in April this year because people associate sardines with junk depression food that is not desirable. This is hardly the case...people all over the world use sardines as a staple in their diet because they are sustainable to harvest, full of great protein and calcium since you eat the bones as well, and free of mercury because they're small fish! It's time we step up and promote the Sardine! I'll start by saying the Sardine Ba Minh at Hanco's is insanely delicious! Hanco's a great value for the neighborhood. I accept the fact that this is not California and I can't go to Lee's for a $2 Ba Minh. I'll notch this one up as yet another example of how the best food to eat does not have to be expensive. In fact, why pay for expensive food unless you are a huge fan of it. Don't take the pills that the Media Machine feeds you. Yelp instead! I got love for my shoes...K Swiss. I've never bought or worn a pair of K Swiss. Saying that was my way of saying I got love for my fellow Yelpers without actually saying it because I felt it sounded a tad touchy and flinty... Great banh mi sandwiches! This very small, unassuming place in Boerum Hill is actually a delight. I chose a traditional banh mi sandwich which I took to be spicy. The ingredients were of good quality. I was particularly impressed with the very fresh cilantro. The ground pork was nicely spicy and very flavorful. I loved the pate, and the carrots gave great texture. The bread itself was a touch untraditional though. Not quite a traditional baguette, but the added texture was still there. Definitely recommend it. I additionally had the Vietnamese coffee, but I couldn't drink much of it. I typically take my coffee black and prefer it strong, so it being sweet was something I just couldn't allow myself to get used to. Oh well. I still had a great time! This is the only Vietnamese banh mi shop I've been to that has proper Vietnamese coffee. And they don't mind adding extra condensed milk for me, either, which makes me extra happy. That, plus the fact that the original sandwich is ABSOLUTELY FREAKING FANTASTIC (just enough crunchy, fresh vegetables, moist and seasoned ground pork, and a kick of spiciness!), are all reasons why I will go out of my way to Brooklyn to pick up lunch. Yeah, there's not really a lot of room to sit, and yes, the shop is really tiny and awkward, and if you drive, the parking in the neighborhood is a crapshoot, but WHO CARES? Just go and get a sandwich and you'll understand. It's allllllll worth it. read more

My favorite parts of a banh mi are the pickled carrots and the spiciness, both which are all too often overlooked by other sandwich shops. Not so at Hanco's! I had the spicy vegetarian chicken, and it was definitely a five-star sandwich. The aforementioned pickled carrots were plentiful, as was the cilantro. There was a prodigious amount of sriracha AND there were jalapenos. The bread was fresh and crusty on the outside, while soft on the inside. I could live off Hancos sandwiches. If you are body and calorie conscious like me, get the shredded chicken sandwich on whole wheat with no dairy (sans mayo and butter). One time my husband got me a sandwich on white bread and I refused to eat it. I took the insides out and put it on whole wheat toast and it wasn't the same. Their bread is incredible. All of the ingredients balance compliment each other in just the right way. If you get it "hot" it will come with jalapenos. I suggest getting it medium and keep the bottle of Sriracha sauce on hand...I pour it on every bite. The vinegar from the veges balances out the spice. It's a sad story when I drop ONE pickled carrot on the floor... Cherry on the sundae: Punch card which gets your 10th sandwich for free. read more

Have not had Hanco's in over 2 years because Nicky's used to quench my sweet pickled thirst for Banh Mi within the area. However today my co worker and I hopped on the bus en route to Smith street. Three Banh Mi's and a Thai Bubble Iced tea later and I couldn't move...We shared the Banh Mi's mind you. I'm happy to be back with Hanco's and am content with it being my go to spot for Banh Mi's. I was quickly processed to the reception desk where the owner expected me to know what I want. But there seemed to be so many great food here, such that I indeed had a hard time trying to figure out what I should have for dinner. Food: after a sec-careful-consideration, I chose their vegeterial bahn mi.!!! WOW The sandwich is crispy and inside veggies are fresh as it just picked from the garden in their back yard... Service: very nice. They clearly allowed you to be a first-time customer here. No rush, full consideration, and great food. This review is only for the bubble tea. I was passing by Hanco's on 134 Smith St & spotted a sign for bubble tea so I stopped everything & ran over to get some. I have a serious bubble tea addiction which I am battling unsuccessfully. But hey, there are worse things in life. I had the Original - black tea with milk plus extra tapioca bubbles. If you don't like tapioca bubbles, Hanco also offers lychee jelly, green tea jelly, herbal and mango jelly. They also have soymilk and a nice selection of flavored teas without milk. I liked their bubble tea. They were very busy that day, the tea was good but I wished they'd given me more bubbles. Seemed like a normal (not extra) amount of bubbles. Hancos is pretty awesome. They used to be around the corner at a hole in the wall next to van leeuwen. But New Yorkers have a way of discovering a good thing. When they moved to smith st they got a larger sit down space in front. Meanwhile they only marginally upped the prices! To my mind they are one of the best deals on smith st. Consistent & tasty. Probably the best bahn mi you can find in this area. Absolutely delicious and authentic Vietnamese food all around. There is no way you can come here, get the bahn mi or pho and not be happy. It's a winner all around. I've tried the grilled pork bahn mi and the original, and honestly the grilled pork is ten times better. Paying for extra meat is worth it. and the Pho is flawless. I am not a Vietnamese sandwich expert. These sandwiches are awesome. Period. You don't have to be an expert in anything to get this. The first time I dropped in, I got the Classic spicy & I kept thinking about it until I went back to get more. Such fresh and tasty flavors...the pate is scrumptious & it's overall bangin'... The vietnamese coffee is authentic (wonderful iced), and the bubble milk tea is really good--the tapioca pearls taste non-fake & while it's sweet, it's not overly sweet nor watery. The first time I got the summer rolls they were delish. I got them a second time but had to return them bc they smelled off...but it was prob the hottest day of this summer so I forgive them. Unless it happens again, which I am optimistic it won't. It also makes me happy that this place is in Brooklyn & that it's so easily accessible by the F/G train. Keep up the yummy work, Hanco's! I was craving some warm soup to make my cold symptoms feel better. I was sneezing all day and even had to call in sick. I found this spot and ordered some pho. The broth was very oily and tasteless. I did not taste the type of broth where it takes hours and hours of prepping and cooking. The vermicelli had a nice chewy texture, however, I had to put lots of hoison and some hot sauce (can't put so much because I was sick) to make the broth to have some taste.
