Horrible experience.... I genuinely don't treat myself to ice cream but I wish I never treated myself to begin with. My primary concerns are regarding health and allergens. To my fellow friends with allergies this is not the place for you... after I had eaten 2 scoops of my small dish I felt a odd crunch in my mouth, not only was there a pecan, but also a short yet long piece of hair was embedded in my ice cream. I will not be returning, and I truly urge this establishment to do better for the future. Especially regarding the allergy concern... yikes... and for the health aspect gross. We recently paid our first visit to Handel's (in large part because of a promo card my wife got for running the Fort-4-Fitness Half-Marathon) and now I'm kicking myself because I wish I had known about this place sooner. Situated directly off of Illinois Road, it's grand, arched front façade it as eye-catching as it is welcoming. Just looking at it says "this place is cool!" (pun intended). The interior is very Red, White, and Blue, and just past the counter where you order your ice cream delight is rows of freezers housing the confectionary awesomeness. To the left you'll find the Current Flavors wall. Based on that wall they can accommodate up to 48 flavors of ice cream. Forty-Eight flavors of ice cream! (One more time now for those in the back): Forty-Eight Flavors of Ice Cream! My brain is hard-pressed to think of a place that offers more. Holy WOW! If you can think of an ice cream flavor it's a good bet that they've got it. For a VERY long time I've been on a quest for apple ice cream. Looking at the Current Flavors wall I scoped it out, hoping I'd finally find some and. *bam* There it was! Deep Dish Apple Pie ice cream! It was an ice cream dream-come-true. Once I decided what I wanted we went to the register and Sage took our orders, then Ryan (as I recall) was tasked with preparing our cones. I don't think it was 5 minutes from the time we placed our orders to receiving our cones. I'd share a picture of the awesomeness that was the Deep Dish Apple Pie ice cream, but it didn't last long. There isn't a lot of seating inside of this Handel's, (basically a couple benches) but outside there are several pic-a-nic tables for sitting down to enjoy your treat. Living in Louisville, we don't have anything like Handel's. Yes, we have local ice cream, but not 48 flavors worth. Both Sage and Ryan (?) were helpful and friendly and appeared they loved what they were doing. And, let's be honest, that wouldn't be such a bad gig, selling ice cream and creating smiles. read more

It's rare I offer 5 stars. This visit truly warrants all 5 stars easy. The ice cream is magnificent. It's tasty, creamy, not overly soft, but packed with cold creamy goodness. I had the black Cherry in a waffle cone, each bite was better than the last. I ate my entire cone, something I rarely do. It was just that good. The service and staff was quick and efficient. There was no rush to get to the next customer, they allow time to make the best decision for each customer. The space is clean and they have ample outdoor seating. What a great addition to the city! There is not a lot of parking. We had to cram in there. But, the best thing about this place is it is open until 10:00 on Friday night when almost every At jefferson point closes at 9:00. That's probably why it was so busy. I don't understand why most things in Fort. Wayne, close at 9 on Friday and Saturday night. I loved the ice cream! It's nice and dense and has great flavor. The cones were nice and crispy as well. Portions are large - a small waffle cone had almost 2 full scoops above the cone. My husband got a medium and almost couldn't finish it. The reason I rate this place 4 and not 5 stars is because if you don't already know what you want to get here it's hard to make a decision. You can't see the ice cream in the window (all of the ice cream are in chest freezers in the center of the work space), there aren't descriptions of the ice cream with ambiguous names on the menu, and it makes it difficult to navigate if you've got any allergies to worry about. Also, it's a one way street in there and when it's packed it's difficult to get back inside to get napkins or spoons. The barriers were closing the way to get to the end of the pick up counter from the entrance. I don't know if it normally is that way or not. The place is clean inside and well staffed. Just be sure to research what you want before you get there and ask for extra napkins when you pick up your order. read more

Ive been to Handels now twice and both times I have walked out not impressed. The last time I got a cheesecake ice cream and it was okay but it wasn't great enough for me to finish the rest of it. Tonight I ordered a hot fudge sundae. Once I got the ice cream I could tell it wasnt hot fudge at all. It was Hershey's syrup. I was not impressed I paid $6.50 for vanilla ice cream and way to much hershey syrup not even hot fudge which its in the name of the sundae. Another ice cream I couldnt finish unless I wanted to eat more hershey syrup than the ice cream. No thanks. read more
