I have taken basic life support many times in a 39 year career as a RN. The hands to heart class is one of the best I have taken. Although there is a short video at the beginning, the rest of the instruction was given by an enthusiastic young man (jake) who has developed easy pneumonic devices for the details of the class. I was supposed to take a large group CPR class at work; however, I came down with strep throat and was unable to attend. I was scrambling around looking for a CPR class to take and found Hands to Heart CPR in Burbank. AJ, who runs the company (I believe) and also teaches the classes was great. I attempted to sign up for a class on the first Saturday, but had problems with the website. I called and left AJ a message. He returned my call quickly and informed me that the class on Saturday was full. I was totally bummed! Alas, AJ offered me a private session that fit with my schedule (on a Sunday) for only a little more than the group class. The benefits of the one-on-one class is that I got to ask all my questions and not take up other people's time! My favorite part, it didn't take 3 hours like the group class. I took an adult and pediatric CPR/AED class with Jose here last night for my personal training re-certification. Jose was not only extremely thorough, he made the class enjoyable. I was definitely not looking forward to spending three hours relearning the same techniques, but Jose's method of "See one, do one, teach one" made the process super fast and easy to remember. There were only five of us in the class, and we all participated through the entire class which I believed helped us retain the information. I was dreading taking this class after my last experience (last time I went through the Red Cross and took a class in Glendale - it was long and awful and I didn't feel like I got the best knowledge). But I was beyond impressed with Hands to Heart. Small class, informative instructor, ample materials for us to work with, and it didn't take as long as I thought it would. Our whole office got our re certifications done today in our office with Hands to Heart. It was GREAT! We were a total of 7 people and had an instructor come down to our office to instruct everyone at the same time. I called them on Monday and Maggie was able to arrange and instructor to come down as soon as Wednesday. This was awesome! Our instructors name was Jose and he was super nice and helpful. He new exactly what he was talking about and we all felt real comfortable with him. Definitely made the class enjoyable with simple descriptions that did not intimidate you. Emergency situations are not easy, his demonstrations will help you keep calm to focus on just the simple things that need to be done. I would definitely recommend Hands to Heart for your training. If you are looking for a fun and informative to way to get your CPR/First Aid certification, this is the place to go! I called to make an appointment and Maggie (the owner) was so helpful. I could only come in after 5pm on a friday, and even though thats not the normal class time she put me down for a one-on-one training at the time the worked best for me. Once I got there, Maggie was professional and personable. She was extremely informative and really made sure I was understanding the material. I've taken CPR classes before and must say there is no comparison. This class was not boring or drawn out and I really feel like I could put what I learned to use (hopefully I won't have to!). The price was right as well! Before I found hands to heart the cheapest classes I could find on 2 days notice, were around $90-$110. At Hands to Heart I paid $70 for both AED CPR and First Aid. Today I tried out Jose and BOTH instructor are great they will teach you everything properly and they are very smart with what they know! I am baffled that this place has so many good reviews. I just got home from my CPR training to become a foster parent and it was frankly, bizarre. The instructor talked a mile a minute and made it his stated intention to 'get us out of here by 12:30' (the class was scheduled till 4). When someone who had been asking questions left the room, he complained that she was asking too many questions and 'we could have gotten out of here earlier if she hadn't done that'. During the video portions of the training, he fast forwarded through most of it and the portions we watched he talked over so we couldn't hear anything. Beyond that, he: - said that if a victim had a nipple ring their medical emergency was 'probably drug related' (?????) - Went on a weird rant, apropos of literally nothing, about how he got beat when he was a kid and that's illegal now but he still thinks children need a good swat now and then - Singled out a woman doctor in the class in a way that felt really weird and sexist, calling her 'the doctor' in a very condescending tone. - Used really glib language when describing potential emergency situations like 'if granny strokes out on you' or 'if you find the baby face down in the jacuzzi' So, I guess technically I learned CPR today, but it probably would have been more effective to watch a video than to sort through the mess of gibberish I was just presented with to tease out some helpful information. I can't understand how this place has a license to certify people to give first aid. read more
