The General Tso's sauce was perfectly spicy and the chicken was crisp and tasty. The pork fried rice was great with a little soy sauce. I enjoyed the egg drop soup, it was hot and savory. If you are a New Yorker, you know what kind of Chinese food we are use to and this is it! Just the set up of the kitchen I knew it was the right spot! Of course I ordered the wings with chicken fried rice. Just wish the rice had more chicken as that was a bit light. But the food was great. The family who work here are so sweet too. I normally would order 1/2 a chicken but it's not on the menu-bummer as I prefer it over the wings. But the pork egg roll was yummy and tastes exactly like back home. The atmosphere of Handy Kitchen is very simple. A completely average looking interior. The staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable, and will make sure your needs are met. The food doesn't take very long to be prepared, even if you put in a big order for a family. Its location is very convenient for quick dinners if you don't feel like cooking. The food itself is varying in quality, sometimes it can be extremely good and sometimes it can leave ALOT to be desired. Been coming here for a very long time. We almost always do take out but it never misses. This food is always the most reliably good and tasty. The lo-míen shouldn't be missed and the chicken on a stick and ribs are delicious. Their sesame chicken with fried rice is also a hit. I love good Chinese food and this restaurant didn't disappoint. After moving here 3 years ago I ignored this place- but no longer. Took a chance and ordered Wonton soup. The wontons were huge and delicious. Soup base was perfect! What sealed the deal was the fried noodles included in the take out. Some places try to pass off the bready canned noodles. Fried noodles are superior. This place is now my new favorite take out. (At the time I visited it was no longer offering eat in). I selected chicken egg foo young as my entree and was served 3 big "cakes" along with the gravy topping. Took me 2 days to eat. We ordered vegetable chow mein, sweet and sour chicken and egg rolls to go. I picked it up and verified with the cashier that that's what was in there, the bag was stapled shut and there wasn't really anywhere to check to make sure everything was in there so I trusted them. I bring it home and find out that there aren't any noodles for the chow mein, the sweet and sour chicken was separated (I get if they wanted to do this to keep the chicken from getting soggy but it already was) which meant that the chicken didn't get stir fried with the sauce nor did it have anything else in it (usually you get pineapple at least). It was all a major disappointment especially considering we ordered this on Christmas Day. My husband was sick and I'm not much of a chef so we decided to go with this place that had good reviews, but it didn't live up to the hype. read more

Locale: Handy Kitchen has been one of those few Chinese places that I frequent in North Carolina. Its North Durham location is a bit out of the way for me, but it is a good location for where it is for those nearby. When I tell many of my friends who live in Trinity Heights or Forest Hills about this place they give me this fixed glare with a raised eyebrow as many people who live in Central Durham will get a nosebleed if they go north of highway 85. I know that this place is not a chic hangout, but the food makes the trip worth it. Ambiance: As you go up N Roxboro Rd, you will reach the '70s to early '80s-looking Eno Square Shopping Center that Handy Kitchen resides in. Not impressive by any means by today's standards, this nondescript shopping strip has seen better years. There are no trees within the parking area, so the sun beats down heavily in the summer months and reflects off the pavement. Don't forget to bring your parasol, shades, and sunblock. You will find no solace from the summer heat inside of Handy Kitchen because it does not have air conditioning, although there are several ceiling fans that spin at full blast when it's hot. The tables are rarely used for eating (mainly for waiting) and most people order ahead and don't bother sitting. That's fine, since the décor, inside temperature, as well as the tables and chairs don't inspire you to eat-in anyway. Cuisine: Their lunch specials are a very good value, as they are priced under $5 and come with rice and soda or soup (go for the soup as it costs slightly more than soda, and buy the soda on the side for a better value). Over time I have tried the Chicken with Broccoli, Chicken with Cashew Nuts, Hunan Beef, Kung Po Chicken, General Tso's Chicken, and Sesame Chicken. For dinner, their combination platters come with an egg roll and rice are mostly priced at $6.50, with a couple priced a little lower and a few priced a little higher. Many other places don't have such value after lunch, often with their lowest-priced dinner option costing almost $10, and usually it's the least interesting meatless dish they offer. I like to order the Szechuan style beef as it does not appear on the lunch menu, and is very good. They offer a respectable "healthy food" (steamed) option, which states "no salt, no fat, and no cholesterol," as well as vegetable and tofu offerings for those of the soy-vegan persuasion. Every time the (fried) rice has been a good consistency and tastes good, the vegetables are always fresh, and the sauces have a nice weight to them. As a normal-sized adult, without any pro-ana tendencies, I find the portions enough to share with another person (with an extra appetizer and drink), or to save for later. For those who like to eat hearty portions, this will make a good meal for you. Food for Thought: For those not acclimated with New York style Chinese food, it does taste different than the local faire. You may mistake the slightly different palette as "bad" local Chinese food, when in reality it is just another variation of Americanized Chinese food. Handy Kitchen's consistency of fast and polite service with good food over time has won me over. Additionally, unlike many Chinese restaurants in the Triangle area that claim authenticity when they really are not, Handy Kitchen does not claim anything but to be New York style Chinese food and it does that very well. This was my first time eating from this particular restaurant. We usually order from another Chinese restaurant but since we've moved this was our first time ordering Chinese. The wait after we ordered was a little long. But it went by fairly quick. The inside is very old and outdated. The walls and decor is so old and discolored! The staff member that checked us out seemed to be the only English speaking employee. The food was good and very hot..which is also a good thing! The only reason I'm giving them as many stars as I am is because we ordered to-go! Based on the condition of the inside I don't think I would have felt too comfortable eating inside. read more

Handy's is a local family restaurant with traditional American Chinese food. We come here when our refrigerator needs restocking or work meetings run Into dinner time. The Kung Pao is good and beef fried rice is our go to order. Other dishes to consider include beef in garlic sauce, crispy tofu and wonton soup. Its a good feeling to support our local businesses so they can keep their doors open during these challenging times.
