Good food choices but be ready for a wait! I have been to Wheat twice and tried a variety of the vegetarian dishes. I had the Vegetable Lo Mein, Braised Tofu, Mapo Tofu, Fried Rice and Spring Rolls. The Braised Tofu is not very flavorful, so I would avoid that. The Mapo Tofu is absolutely delicious and has that perfect peppercorn kick. It is spicy, so get a sweet drink on the side if you are not a fan of spice. Vegetable Lo Mein is a large quantity with lots of vegetables. Ask for some sauces on the side because it is bland on its own. On the other hand, the Fried Rice is yummy on its own or with the Mapo Tofu. Spring Rolls are a little oily to my liking but are a good vegetarian appetizer option. I will say that this place is always packed, even on weekdays and sometimes the wait staff forgets about you. It took several rounds to get them to take our order, give the food or even get the check at the end. I will try it out next time at lunch time because maybe it is a little faster. I was excited to finally try Wheat with my friends, and while the food that we ordered was good and came out relatively fast, we all felt that our waiter was very rude and judgmental. For example, when my friend told him that she wanted to order the beef intestine soup, he straight up said "uh are you sure? Finally had a chance to try Wheat this week and boy was it worth the wait! We had minced beef noodles and braised beef noodle soup. Also got some pork dumplings. I tried a lemon/lime drink that was very tasty and refreshing. The restaurant was super clean. We were seated and orders taken quickly. Our waiter was very friendly and helpful. Our food was very delicious and flavorful! Portions were perfect- not huge but not too small either. The waiter talked us into dessert since they make some homemade on site. Finally decided to visit on a chilly Sunday evening with a discount from a local dining club. Looks to be popular with Duke students. I got the beef noodles and my partner got the spicy noodles. I thought my soup had the perfect balance of savory with sour (vinegar and other ingredients), while my partner thought his noodle soup was adequately spicy. Chinese noodle place located in a shopping complex in Durham. Ambiance/service probably trumps the actual food taste. Prices were on the higher end but given that it was in a more upscale area, this made sense. Interior design was also bright and slightly fairy tale like giving it a higher end feel. Soups- ok large portions but the soup felt a little watered down. It was as if though they made a concentrate this morning and then watered it down to match up to the large portions. Or, they just didn't stew that broth enough. A good noodle soup needs a good soup to drive that dish! I would highly recommend they look into making their soup richer and stronger. This was true across the 4 different types of soups we ordered. This restaurant is seated right off the corner of the road. When I walked in, I was the only customer there in the early afternoon hours (11:30). I was greeted and seat immediately. The server provided a menu, a glass of cold water, chopsticks as soon as I was seated. I took in the views of the beautiful restaurant prior to ordering. The attentive server provided an awesome background of the restaurant. He advised that they are a Chinese ramen noodle restaurant and that the noddles are made in house. I opted for the scallion pancakes as an app and the pork ramen. My food was piping hot which was great. The pancakes were soooo flaky and packed a lot of flavor. Paired with the dipping sauce and it's sure to be a table favorite. The pork ramen was nothing short of delicious. The pork was tender, the noodles were soft yet had a nice buoyancy in the light broth. I did wish that the egg wasn't cooked all the way through however it was still good. To my surprise, when I asked for a to-go box, it comes with the cutest to go bag that I now use while shopping for groceries and they give you to-go chopsticks. As the daughter of Chinese immigrants, my litmus test for chinese restaurants is, "Would I bring my parents here?" Wheat gets a resounding YES! on that front, so I've deemed them 5 star-worthy, even if I had some quibbles about some dishes. Their specialty is noodles bowls, and boy do they deliver! The noodles are chewy and served in massive quantities, as good Chinese noodles should be (we came for lunch and had enough leftovers for a second lunch). My husband got the crispy minced beef noodles, which, unlike most noodles on the menu, are not served soup-style. Instead, the noodle:meat:sauce ratio is like an Asian bolognese. The minced beef sauce had soy sauce/umami flavors and was sweeter than expected, with a hint of Szechuan peppercorn edge (this may be the metallic tinge that I saw one Yelp reviewer complain about; Szechuan peppercorns famously bring a tingling numbing sensation). I love me some sweet and savory and could eat this every day. I got the chicken gizzard with pickled peppers noodle soup. Though it had one on the menu like the above minced beef noodles, I found it packed more heat and made me need to occasionally blow my nose. The gizzards were nicely chewy but not too tough. The real star of the noodle soup, however, was the broth. It was incredibly rich, flavorful, and complex (I found whole garlic cloves and chunks of ginger in my bowl). It's too salty to sip much on its own, but it was just perfect mixed together with the noodles. In other words, at least this particular noodle soup is different from ramen and pho, where the soup overflows the noodles. Instead, the soup is a stellar accompaniment that lets the noodles shine. Now that I've raved about the noodles, I'll note that the two appetizers we tried were serviceable, if not as standout as the noodles. The shrimp dumplings (har gow style) had a thicker rice dough wrapper than my preference. I liked the popcorn shrimp more: big, battered, fried crispy but not greasy, and served with a spice blend on the side. Finally, we tried a snow lady for dessert, mostly out of curiosity for what the pristine white balls tasted like. They came in strawberry or mango (we got mango), and turned out to be a thin layer of mochi wrapped around Asian whipped cream (lightly sweetened and stabilized to have a foamy texture) with fruit bits mixed in. While I thought the shrimp dumplings had wrappers that were too thick, here I wished for more mochi to chew on. This was fine, but more than I really want to be paying for mostly whipped cream. I really, really hope Wheat sticks around, as we have a dearth of authentic Chinese in Durham. The noodles are a must have, and better than any Chinese noodle dishes I've found anywhere in the Triangle. read more

Went in to pick up some pastries from the bakery section. It was ~6 pm but completely empty inside (maybe because it was stormy outside). One of the waiters rushed over immediately and helped me with a menu. He was very nice and courteous. It looks like they've upgraded their interior - it's a lot of small thick marble tables, good for small groups of people. The one I sat on to wait was a little wobbly but not annoyingly so. There's plenty of space inside and ambiance is good. It took a couple minutes to get the pastries because they heated up the egg tarts, but it was packaged beautifully. The egg tarts were the best I've had in the triangle area so far - creamy and firm custard with no cracks & a soft, slightly chewy, not too flaky crust. Snow lady was great - soft thin mochi outside with a fluffy creamy inside. It's very overpriced, but I guess it's 9th street. That and the table were the only downsides, but the quality of the pastries and the friendliness of the staff more than made up for it! read more

This was the first Chinese/Taiwanese noodle place I've tried here and probably one of the few that exist in the triangle, and it was decent! I personally enjoyed it a lot and I would go back again. I've had a good amount of Taiwanese food back home in Hawaii and often find myself craving it. Now that I've tried other places here and can compare, I find that the soup and the flavors here taste more "clean" than say, Asian kitchen, and I kind of appreciate that about this place. If you're used to more flavorful deep soups with beef noodle soups, it's possible you wouldn't like this as much as what you're used to. But if you've never had something like this before, I think you'd like it. It is kind of pricey and I wish they gave more than 1 piece of yuchoy. For the area it's in, I do hope it continues to be open because this sort of cuisine is not common in the triangle and it hits the spot when I'm craving it.
