We saw the fine reviews for Handy Randy and contacted the company for a bid for some work we wanted to have completed. Bill was prompt in coming out and indicated that they could perform the work and that he would be able to get us a bid shortly after determining the cost of the materials but they were busy and the actual job could not be performed for about 30 days to which we agreed. He emailed almost a month later and apologized saying that he was running way behind but would get some info together and get back to us as soon as possible for one of the aspects of the job (a new front door). We asked that they complete the remainder of the 3 items we spoke to him about while he was at our location even if he didn't have the information for the new door. He never returned the email. We contacted them yet another time and they still have not responded. This review is bad due to the fact that they never followed through with anything they said they would do - we have no idea what their work would have been like as they never even started the job. He's a very nice guy and polite. I had a list to go over with him and needed some quotes. He went through my list with me and that took him more than 1 hour. He was honest with what he could and could not do. He even suggested me some cheap fixes I can do by myself. Before he left, he insisted on fixing my door knob because he thought that was a safety issue and he did that without charging me anything, saying that was his good deed for the day!! I've been too lazy to write a review on yelp, but my experience with Handy Randy compelled me to post my first. Once we decided that we wanted to ready our house for sale, I could no longer put off all the home repair projects. A friend of ours recommended Greg and Bill from Handy Randy and the only regret I have is not calling them sooner. These guys were punctual, friendly, super knowledgeable, honest, and did great work. Our backyard wood fence has taken a beating over the years and the bottom of the fence had completed separated from the base, causing the vertical planks to flap around and bang incessantly like huge wooden wind chimes whenever the Santa Ana's started blowing. Instead of trying to convince us to replace the entire fence, Greg advised us that he could repair the fence by cutting out the weak, rotted lower portions of the planks, caused by years of water damage from our sprinklers and then replacing and reinforcing the base with new, pressure-treated wood. He then re-painted the fence and it looks fantastic. The fence will last for years and we saved a ton of money. Bill and Greg also did a number of other jobs in the house including painting the inside of our garage, patching up and covering a hole under our cabinets caused by a not-so-smart plumber we hired, and building a case to cover up the ugly hoses behind the washer/dryer in the laundry room. Greg even came back on a Saturday to finish a small color-match on the floor for us...at no charge. Greg and Bill are now on speed-dial, cuz I have a feeling I'll be calling them a lot once we move. Here is how it went: To begin, I have always been skeptical of hiring house help, but I needed help in getting this project done since my husband could not do it. I got a neighbor's referral, researched on yelp, and decided to call. My project was to hang 3 metal art works about 20 feet high on one of my walls. I learned that Handy Randy is a father and son business (Bill and Greg), and they worked marvelously together providing support to each other. They arrived on time and were polite. These guys are awesome. I scheduled an appointment 3 weeks in advance for 2 pm. On the day of the appointment, at 1:45 they call and say they're running late. At 2 pm they text to say that they can't show up at all and have to reschedule. That's cool, not like I had to take time off work or anything. What a joke. I'd love to know any other business that can cancel an appointment on the exact day and time of the appointment itself. I just waited 3 weeks for... nothing to get fixed. Oh, and just to clarify - they didn't offer a "steep discount of 50%." Their exact words were that the job should only take 1 hour, and they wouldn't charge more if it took any longer. In other words - they get the job done in 1 hour as expected, and I pay full price. So we can add stretching the truth to their fabrication skills. I'm sorry to say that my experience with this business was not great. Our initial meeting went well and we had a good feeling about the company. We had to wait a month for them to come out. That seemed extreme but we thought it might be a good sign, that they were in demand. They were hesitant to give a quote for the work. That should have been a red flag but we pushed forward. They arrived on time and were pleasant and clean. When they were finished they billed for $200.00 more than was quoted. The work was pretty straightforward and seemed fairly simple. We had some electrical work done and it was not right. We had to have it redone. I contacted the company a couple of times for an explanation of the charges and NO RESPONSE. One of the main reasons we chose them was the Yelp reviews. I felt we should let others know our experience. read more
