This location is my second go to Hangar 18 gym. Located near downtown Upland, you maneuver through the industrial area in order to find the gym itself. Parking is not the best especially during peak hours; I find myself parking inside the residential areas just to come to gym. They have auto belay, a top out area, and a very large bouldering section. They don't have a super long slab wall, but they do have a wide variety of problems and types of boulder holds. As an avid v4 climber, I think the routes here a fairly easy for my grade, yet the problems are very fun in itself. The interior is very clean and the workers are diligently checking the gym, restocking, and cleaning restrooms. They have merchandise for purchase, too. On very busy days, the students from the colleges are here to climb. I'd avoid climbing in weekdays after 3 PM if you want more time on the wall without competition. Other than that, it is a nice gym with nice workers. read more

They value $880 in bad charges more than they value our relationship for life and the truth of what happened - their mistakes. Eddie would rather lean into their mistakes instead of saving what could be a lifelong customer. Do you think my family coming for life is worth more than $880? What about the value of all the people I now tell not to go to Hangar 18 ever via this post who read it and never both to give you a chance? That's why Yelp is here. Transparency. So, people can make up their own minds if they want to trust you with their business or not. Eddie would tell you we signed the contract, which I guess we did, but there's much more to this story, including their email to us saying both memberships were done after the two-month period we thought we were signing up for. That alone should be enough. I sent him proof of the emails showing our membership were OVER. Over means done. Over means no more billing even if you had some small print somewhere prior. What part of that do you not understand, Eddie? Not to mention, we had been there in prior years and never had this issue. Meaning we TRUSTED you. That's so much more valuable than your contract. Do you not understand that, Eddie? Also, their onboarding is clunky and done via iPads and small print (that no one reads when standing in their little 'lobby' area surrounded by others trying to check in and get started), which is a lengthy 45-minute process, especially when you thought you knew what you were getting, as we'd done in the past. Yes, my fault I guess for not reading that small print or going to the original email confirmation where you attached the small print. I'm sorry for being a handshake and trust kind of guy. It's served me well most of my life. I read the small print on business dealings, home purchases and stuff, but for a company I've trusted for years, I had no reason to question otherwise. My family and I enjoyed going. I will now tell everyone I come across with any interest in Hangar 18 to stay away, far away. I've already shared it with my barista in a discussion this weekend. And, believe me, a letter about bad business practices will be coming in my weekly email I send to thousands of entrepreneurs each week. And when I speak at future business events, I'll use this as an example of what not to do. How much more valuable would my positive story be to all these folks saying that Hangar 18 and Eddie did the right thing? That would send customers your way instead of the opposite. That's unfortunate for the people at Hangar 18 who love working there. I understand this is Eddie's call from your corporate office and it doesn't reflect on all Hangar 18 people. However, bad leadership and management trickle throughout organizations. I'm guessing if I were to spend some time with your local management and staff, I'd hear about lots of issues going on within your organization. If you're worried about finances Eddie, you have much bigger fish to fry. Maybe that's why you'd rather hold on to the $880 you charged me over the summer plan we thought we were buying. For those who wonder why I didn't see the charges each month, I don't scrub my transactions. I use to 'balance my checkbook' years ago but spent so much time doing that it wasn't worth it. I have alerts set for certain amounts to watch for anything out of the ordinary but with a family of 5 we have a lot of monthly transactions. I missed this. Yes, my fault for not noticing sooner. But, as soon as I did I notified Hangar 18 to find out why they kept billing me. My hope was reasonable, considering they sent me a 'membership is over' note after our summer for both of my kids who went. I'm super loyal as a customer, but when I've been treated entirely unfairly, and I'd even go as far as 'corruptly,' then I don't have any qualms about sharing my story to help prevent others from being treated as I've been done. I say corruptly because you don't get to create bad systems where you confuse your customers, tell them one thing at the counter, email them confirmation of being done and then keep charging them. If I wanted to waste more of my time on this, I'd go to court and win. But, you and your company aren't worth a minute more of my time. read more

I usually go to the orange location but orange is bouldering only. I came to upland for Auto belay training. There are 2 Auto belay reels with 3 routes of varying difficulties accessible from each reel. The class was brief but covered the safety and using the Auto belay device and harnesses. There are quite a few top rope climbs and lead climbs in the hangar. There are a good number of bouldering areas. Unfortunately there were very few V0, V1, and V2 level bouldering problems. read more

Ask anyone who knows me well and they'll tell you that I'm DEATHLY afraid of heights. I can barely look down from the second story of my home. Yet here I was climbing four times that (I think)! What kind of monster actually LIKES subjecting themselves to such heights?! I was never that brave to find the fun in doing something like this and to be completely honest, I'm still not sold after hours of braving my version of Mount Everest. But I can see how people find this thrilling and healthy like any hobby/sport. First timers might be intimidated by the sheer size of the wall and the amount of experienced climbers who look like they can parkour their way out of every situation ever. I tried two versions of climbing: auto belay and the other one where you rely on your buddy to make sure you don't fall. Believe it or not, auto belay was scarier for me because of that one second you're in free-fall before the machine actually activates and catches you. You just gotta trust that it'll catch you. Luckily the employees were nice and showed us all there was to climbing and I had friends, who are clearly nuts for doing this every week, to show us how to tie knots and the basics of climbing. Veiny arms, sore legs, sweat, anxiety, thrill, wedgies from the gear, and a healthy dose of fear. It's definitely something to experience, and for me it was pretty fun! Fellow climbers are very helpful and friendly, and don't judge you for making a fool of yourself. Definitely go with a group if you can, it's more fun when your friends encourage/laugh at you for being a complete newbie. As for me, I'll be spending more time at the tennis courts and airsoft fields. Maybe occasionally I'll visit this wonderful, terrifying playground. Happy climbing! read more

Packed gym, as others have noted. It's pretty popular after work hours on a weekday, and even on a Sunday when I came right at opening time, I was alone for about 2 minutes before 4-5 others came along. But I'm very impressed with the sheer number of routes here and how one entire section is for top rope. There are plenty of V0-1 routes for beginners to try, and the more intermediate routes were fun and doable. This will likely be my home base as I've been to the Rancho Cucamonga location and those routes are a lot more difficult. read more

It's $22 for a day pass and $3 for the shoe rental. This place is cramped like a hallway with rope climbing on the left side and bouldering on the right side. Be careful with where you're walking and standing, and you might be really close to a fellow climber on the walls. Crash pad is dense. Because it's a smaller gym, there's not as many problems as what I'm used to. But I did enjoy my session here. read more

Getting there: To get there from the 210 freeway, take the Mountain Ave exit and head south. Hangar 18 Upland will be on your left in the Mountain Green Shopping Center. I haven't had a problem with parking here since I started going to this location. Experience: I frequent this location and always have a great climbing experience. The facility itself is pretty cool, offering both belaying and bouldering options. The routes are well-maintained, and the staff is friendly and helpful. On a somewhat boring afternoon, my wife located an online coupon for indoor rock climbing at Hangar 18 in Upland. My wife and teenaged nephew participated, and I provided safety and security. Hangar 18 was packed, and it appeared completely chaotic. The male staff member with the mustache assisted us with registering, signing the waivers, and getting suited up. The staff member was serious when giving the safety instructions, which I appreciated. At one point, my nephew seemed to drift away while the staff member was speaking. The staff member quickly got my nephew's attention to make sure he was listening; awesome. There was a decent sized birthday group that was occupying most of the beginner area, and we had to wait a long time for space to clear. Once the space cleared, the wife and nephew started up the wall. They did a great job and had a lot of fun. Again, kudos to the staff member; no injuries were sustained! read more

My home gym is the hangar in orange and this one does not even come close for bouldering. The routes are terribly set with lots of reaches that feel like they weren't designed with human beings in mind. Really disappointed by the offerings for bouldering here. This is an update NOT about the second or third time I've revisited this fine establishment. It's an update about my first and last time climbing here. A continuance of what I wrote as the first review. I stand by every single letter and am not changing my mind about anything, regardless of all the other positive reviews. It's been five and a half years, going on six, and the case I have with Hanger 18 is finally over. After 5 different lawyers, 120 phone calls (I'm rounding up on the phone calls), 4 appeals, I'm left with zero savings, one fractured spine, a pair of legs that will never ever know what's it like to be in the sleeves of a pair of pants and an impending doom of the defense coming after me, for the rest of my life, to pay for their attorney fees. I'm leaving out a lot of other little details, but that's about the gist of it. Nobody wants to hear or is interested in all the nitty gritty particulars, so I'm not going to bore anyone anymore on that, let along repeat myself for the 200th time (again, rounding up). This update is just to let anyone know, who is willing to take a second (or 30, it's long, but it's not that long) and read, the heeded fable of what happened here and I'm sure, will happen to someone else. I'm not the first one to fall and be severely, permanently, damaged and I will not be the last. With all the gross negligence of this gym and their ridiculous brush with borderlining requirements, it's amazing that they haven't closed down. I guess this is where it pays to have excellent insurance and big money to pay resourceful lawyers that can get them out of any jam with any judge. I still haven't lost my interest and love for rock climbing, it's truly, truly, a great sport, but please, if you are going to participate in this great work out, find a place that does their research and know how to protect their members. If I wasn't so financially crippled by this ...establishments, I'd be out there climbing rocks and jumping out of planes all day. Money can be earned but our bodies cannot. (Not yet, at least.) Once some things are damaged, they are always going to be damaged. I'm not even 30 and I already know what it's like to live like an 80 year old. Well, maybe not all the 80 year olds, some of them are still pretty painless. Anywho, this isn't a ploy to get anyone to feel sorry for me or to tell me how great life is after 80, I know it can be great and I love my life the way it is. This is a ploy to get people to know what a cut-corner-kind of place this gym is and the people who own it as well as the people who represent it. Cheap and decent. I got a membership for two months after taking a break for a year. I figured it's cheaper than going back to Touchstone. I think I paid $30 or so a month for this Hanger membership which really doesn't bite compared to the $100 per month. The grading here is definitely harder, which I like. It's a cool place for the price, but I'm not too fond of the crash pad and the huge crowd. I only climbed one time there and was floored with how a lot of members neglected safety. I saw a relatively huge whipper with people underneath. Little kids climb and jump off the boulders without watching. It's a good place, but I saw things I won't go back for. read more

Compared to the Hangar 18 in Hawthorne, the Hangar 18 is Upland is way better. The Hangar 18 in Upland is nice. It seems bigger to me... but I'm probably wrong. I think the one in Hawthorne is bigger. I just like the one in Upland more. What I like about the one in Upland is that if you go in the daytime, they leave all their doors open. So there's a nice draft that blows through from the one end of the gym to the other. There's always a fresh breeze blowing so there's no smell to it. The locker rooms are alright. There are lockers you can put your stuff in. And a good enough space to change clothes if you need to. Parking is alright. There's not as much parking as the Hangar 18 in Hawthorne. read more

Thrill seekers, rock climbing enthusiasts, and lovers of scraped hands and peeled skin rejoice! This is the perfect place to get all that, and a full-body workout without actually going to the gym. The place is spacious enough to accommodate large groups of people with room left over, and the climbs themselves are suited for people of all levels; though, beginners will have a tough time the first few tries. It won't take long for you to realize that as easy as it looks from the ground, you will need to train your body to move in ways it's not used to and use muscles that you didn't even knew you had to keep your hold/ balance on these walls. The cool part is that they have both free climbs, where you're not strapped into anything, as well as harness climbs that will take you all the way to the ceiling- in the safest way possible, of course. It's perfect for people who need a bit of a rush in their lives. The memberships start off pretty affordable, but get more and more expensive as the months go along. I guess they're confident enough in the addictive nature of rock climbing that they know you'll want to pay upwards of $30 a month just to keep a membership there. If you live nearby, however, and you happen to hate the gym or working out normally, you're in luck. When you're a member, you can go every day, and stay as long as your heart desires/ your hands and body hold out. For newbies, I highly recommend finding someone who has a membership and using one of their free monthly guest passes to scope the place out before you sign up yourself. I also recommend buying a cheap bag of chalk powder at your nearest sporting goods store as your hands will be feeling the burn after the first few climbs. If you decide this is your new home away from home, you may also want to invest in some rock climbing shoes of your own, as renting them here will cost you $3 a pop, and may or may not make your feet smell really badly. Awesome indoor rock climbing gym! I've been coming here for about three years now and even though they are smaller than some other climbing gyms, the customer service and belaying lessons are great! They have a wall designated for rock climbing and another adjacent wall for bouldering with cushioned mats all around. The skill level of the climbs are clearly labeled and they change it up pretty often. This past weekend I came with my bf to use a Groupon for a full day of climbing which included the belaying lesson and rental equipment. Our belaying lesson was taught by Mason and he was patient and very thorough in explaining all the details of how to tie the figure 8 knot and going through all the safety procedures, even though he had already taught several lessons for the day and was getting ready to leave. There are also several other locations of Hangar 18 in Riverside, Long Beach, South Bay, and Mission Viejo. I've only been to the Riverside location which is a lot bigger than the Upland location. Visited for the first time after trying Sender One and I can say I won't be coming back here, Sender one all the way way nicer staff and better climbing facilities!! First the staff had an attitude especially the brunette girl behind the desk, seemed annoyed at every little thing and the instructor was nice enough until a while later when we asked him to tie a knot for us (which he said we can always ask for help) was not nice about. Staff just left a really bad taste in our mouths (maybe understaffed?) for the crazy amount of people in their and not a big area at all. Wouldn't recommend esp if you want more space read more

Great activity to do with friends! I have been wanting to go here for so long and I finally got a couple friends to go with me. I purchased a day pass for $21 (or $22) for myself. Upon entering, I had to fill out 2 lengthy digital forms at their ipad station. Checking in took longer than expected because the front desk was so busy. I would come in 15 mins early to get forms filled out and to beat the rush of people. After checking in, my more experienced friends and I chose to try bouldering the easier v0 and v1 options. I really enjoyed the wide range of climbs that that they offered. I found one called the "squatty potty" where you started in a squat position with your hands on two poop shaped grips. It was a great laugh and fun to try. We stayed for about 2 hours. I wish I could have stayed longer but I was just too tired and my hands already ripped. Overall, this place is large enough to come with a group and the atmosphere is very friendly. I found multiple times that strangers helped us find the right footing and holdings while climbing. I was hesitant to come here. My manager said it was a cool place but I read a lot of reviews stating poor customer service and the staff being rude. I'm also completely new to bouldering and know very little about it (sorry if I fudge up the terminology or am wrong about something) I don't know if other reviewers have their panties in a bunch or if I just lucked out on who helped me, but I had a pleasant experience, almost exactly how I would want to be treated. (Unless you ask questions or look like you're having issues, they leave you alone to fill out the forms [2 forms for adults], give succinct explanations of the rules and how it works there, and give you free rein after you pay) The cost for a day pass is $18 while monthly membership is $36, so membership is definitely something to consider. I'm still on the fence since this is close to work not home, which means I have to bring another set of clothes each time and would only come here after work. (They have multiple locations but none near my house, closest would be a 30min drive) Shoe rentals are $3. They were really helpful and nice about shoes. They explained that they will be very snug fits for usage purposes but if they were too uncomfortable, I could switch them at anytime. I did have to switch sizes after 2 climbs because they were too tight. I didn't experience anything rude, condescending, removed, or anything negative in general from my interactions, questions, and request. TL;DR customer service is good. The facility itself looks alright, a bit smaller than what I thought it would be. There are very bouncy floors for the bouldering areas which made me feel safe in case I fell. Place doesn't look dirty, it doesn't look pristine clean, but that's what I'm expecting when you have tons of sweaty people with their hands covered in chalk. A wide range in difficulty available and it's at most a small wait to climb the wall you want. So why not 5 stars? 1 star is docked for a few nit picky details and what I felt was lacking. What was lacking: More beginner routes, maybe separate them as well so it's easier for new people to navigate. There's a limitation on space so not everyone can be catered to, but I think there should be one easy incline wall for newbies to start on. Lockers would be cool. There are cubbies under the benches for you to put your stuff. I don't think people will go through/swipe your stuff; but you just feel more secure with your stuff locked away. Nit picky: A/C would be nice. Didn't need it the evening I went since it was cool enough. I imagine it would be uncomfortable in a hot summer afternoon Fans they're using look nasty. I get they're hard to reach and maintain, but the dust build up on them is pretty significant. I don't particularly care other than for aesthetics since I have no health issues, but I imagine some people would find it concerning. Bottom line: Good place, especially if you opt for membership. This is a gritty place as the sport itself is tough, so don't go in expecting a luxurious comfy upscale setting and service. The employees are just regular people being themselves. I wouldn't recommend going on your own if you're not in the best of shape since you'll be on your own and even the beginner bouldering walls can be challenging. The rope climb/belay has that perk of whoever is helping you, could probably assist you in addition to keeping you safe. Came here June 24 with my 3 other people. Terrible experience with using Groupons, their waiver system, and the workers there. We had 2 groupons for "2 intro to rock climbing classes". We came in 1.25 hours before closing but they said that they don't give out lessons after a certain time. NO WHERE DOES IS THAT MENTIONED ON THE GROUPON. I already drove 45 mins to get here so I don't want to come back another day, plus I was leaving for college the next day and won't be able to use the Groupons before they expire. The worker gave us the option of bouldering so we did that. I've done the rock climbing class at Riverside but my brother, cousin, and friend haven't. My brother and cousin have been to this Upland location before for bouldering so their waiver was already in the system. However it took the front desk 10 mins to pull up my waiver from Riverside, they had to call the Riverside location to finally confirm it. This was my friends first time at a Hangar 18 location so he had to fill out a new waiver. After submitting it, he had to wait for a confirmation email but it never came in so they had him fill out the waiver again. Waited more, still no confirmation email, so he had to fill out the waiver another time! Finally got this waiver confirmed AFTER THREE ATTEMPTS and 35 MINUTES OF WAITING. After confirming the waiver we only had around 40 mins left to do stuff. None of the workers even bothered to explain how bouldering works or safety precautions. My friend who has never done bouldering before was completely lost and I had to explain to him what to do. The Groupon states all gear is provided, but I guess that is only rock climbing gear. When I went to the front desk for chalk, they said it isn't included. You would think since we weren't rock climbing(so already not using any of their material) and with our time they wasted waiting for the waiver system, they could at least lend us some chalk, but nope. No compensation at all. I'm writing this review really late because I tried contacting them about my poor experience, to see if they could do anything about it. But one month later and I still have not received a response. Overall I was disappointed with this Hangar 18 location. Not worth the drive, my time, or the price I paid for the Groupon. read more

Sometimes you'll see me at the gym bench pressing 250, sometimes you'll see me at the track at 5:30 in the morning before the rooster cocks a doodle do, but most of all you'll see me cranking hard rocks HARD at Hangar 18. I might be new to these rainbow walls but I'm no stranger to clapping climber's chalk and getting VEINY. If you haven't caught me at the Hangar yet, you must not be climbing hard enough. Or too busy. Don't know which is worse. I've only gone rock climbing once so I have nothing to compare this to... but I had an awesome time and would definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants to try it. My friend and I shared a groupon that was $30 total for both of us, and included a belay lesson and equipment/shoe rental, then you can climb anywhere in the gym to your heart's content. The staff is very nice and helpful, and the climbs are labeled with the level of difficulty. For those who don't want to use ropes and harnesses, there are plenty of walls for bouldering. I know there's mats and all, but it's still kind of scary. Yes, recommended and would definitely go again. read more

Went for a birthday party of my daughter's friend. At first she was skeptical about this place because she never been to one. The staffs are super friendly and fun. They taught the beginners tricks and tips how to climb the walls. Of course my daughter got too excited and kept on challenging herself to try the harder and harder obstacles. There were different levels and they color coded them. We loved this place. She even think of doing her birthday there too. That was an awesome party for like 7years and up, up, up.
