Ate there at lunch today. The place is decorated well, lots of plants and big windows. The food is good. Creative without being insane. What needs to be worked on is the wait staff. Page delivered our water and silverware and promptly disappeared. We had to summon another waiter to find him. He reappears takes our order and disappears. Had to ask him twice to refill our waters. When it came to leave, he was no where to be found. Another waiter had to track him down to collect our bill. Literally 30 minutes of our lunch was waiting on him. This place would be a solid four stars if we had a better experience with our waiter. read more

Waited 30 minutes to get seated, gave us full menu, another 10 for someone to come up, got "soft opening menu" which revealed less than half of the original menu. Waited yet ANOTHER half an hour to be waited on again, food was burnt and soggy, still edible, but not really worth it. Quite loud too, echoey, really, just save your money. read more

good happy hour, good cocktails, potential for great GLUTEN FREE options but not quite there. typically we call ahead to restaurants if we are unsure what the gluten free options will be, especially if they aren't clearly indicated online. we were assured hanks had gluten free bread for their sandwich heavy menu and plenty of other choices. when we got there, we were pleasantly surprised to see gluten free crackers were available for the cheese board. yay, nice touch! however they were actually out of gluten free bread. we had a couple apps, charred veggies and an artichoke. the artichoke was one of the worst, most tasteless chokes i've ever had. the cocktails were great though! so we waited a couple weeks then called ahead to verify gluten free bread and we were assured they had it this time. oddly enough when we arrived and tried to order GF sammie's we were told they still were out of gf bread... and the gf crackers for the cheeseboard. so that was super annoying and while we debated what to do, a server came back to tell us she found gluten free crackers! so we got the cheeseboard and it was lovely, along with the cocktails. overall, some gluten free highs and lows. happy hour is nice. the patio is really neat but can be hotter than hell and not very shaded at all. but it was dog friendly so that was cool! TL;DR -- go for cocktails and a happy hour cheeseboard but maybe check in advance on the gluten free situation if that applies to you! read more

I really like Hank's: it's beautiful, the prices are reasonable, and the menu items and cafe baked goods are legitimately delicious -- like for real, I go to Hank's multiple times a week. In fact, I like it so much that I feel like a parent seeing her bright, promising young son make poor life choices. While Hank's hasn't dropped out of college to follow Phish, they have mysteriously neglected two very important aspects of running a restaurant and coffee shop and I fear that this will hurt their chances for a long and happy life: the first is that they clearly have not hired managers who have run larger restaurants before, and there is often good and polite, but comically inefficient service. The other is good coffee. Their coffee comes from Texas Coffee Traders, aka the coffee company that supplies the coffee on the UT campus. It's weird being in a super designy, fun space with great music and cool staff and clientele, sipping on airport coffee. All that said, Hank's you could be so epic, and you have almost everything in place to make that happen! Your father and I love you and we just want you to be successful, I know finding qualified management isn't easy and good coffee beans cost a little more, but we believe in you -- you have the potential to be the best place in town, please just step up your game a tad and be the phenomenal restaurant we know that you are!! read more

I live in San Antonio, but needed a venue for a baby shower I was hosting in Austin. I was referred to Hank's and it was the best decision. We were given the private party room which was so cute! The staff was highly accommodating. David coordinated the event for me and was excellent at communicating and touching base. The food was delicious. Wonderful experience! read more

While I appreciate that this restaurant is here in the neighborhood, dang, the service and quality control here are atrocious. Four of us arrived at 8pm one evening and were told that we couldn't be seated at the vacant tables inside or on the completely empty patio because they "had a lot of big reservations." We settled for a seat in the cafe and....no one ever arrived to be seated indoors or out and those tables stayed vacant throughout the hour and a half we were there. When our food arrived, one person had burnt toast (not the advertised baguette) with a burned sausage. My order didn't arrive and so when no server seemed to notice or remark on that fact I went back to the counter to ask about it. A manager ultimately brought out my avocado toast and said it had been "forgotten." Like that was totally a-okay. This meant of course that the toast was soggy from the avocado and the poached egg was stone cold. Every single employee we encountered that night was amazingly indifferent to everything they did, and the communications between them all, as well as the service itself was super random and chaotic. I was a big fan of Henri's on S. Lamar(same owners) and was saddened when it closed. But when Hank's opened in my new neighborhood I was thrilled. The menu is interesting, the service is great, and the restaurant itself has a really cool vibe. There's a semi-separate coffee bar, a great outside deck, and a full bar. Loving it! read more

Went to this white building on Berkman with people sitting at tables on the porch ... no name out front, so it was hard telling from the street what it was. They really need better signage out front. Inside was good, and the wait staff were good and friendly. We had the Steak and Gouda sandwich ... excellent .. and the fried brussel sprouts were very, very good as well. They do need to update their website, as it just says "opening in early 2018". I will be back!! read more

I live about 2 blocks from Hank's and have visited the establishment several times: twice at the cafe and once at the main restaurant. I have to say that I've enjoyed their food immensely. All of the waitstaff have been extremely friendly. The service at the main restaurant was a bit spotty, though. I was pretty tolerant since they still seem to be getting their sea legs on. I'll definitely be back! It's a nice option to have in the neighborhood. read more

I have mixed emotions, we came for happy hour and things were great - then here for dinner and not as impressed - while good flavors, just seems like need more training for their waitstaff - this might help when you say you will be bringing waters then don't bring them, or that you suggest burger is best medium well and that will have pink in it but then it has no pink when delivered yet still tasty is more so that waiter doesn't know the menu - also was a bit put off that waiter's only suggestion was the most expensive item on the menu - then we placed order yet still have our menus sitting on the table and just find follow up is missing on a few things but excited for them to be in the neighborhood and know they will improve on service and hopefully their WiFi too - as a coffeee ship without WiFi or WiFi that is super slow is a bit of a turnoff too - yet am confident that is a work in progress and have been happy with improvements so far read more

My experience at Hank's was above and beyond any words! The space itself is beautiful, homey and comfortable. We walked through the cafe and got a coffee, Alan helped us! Once we sat for dinner, the service was top notch! Angel waited on us and was just great with recommendations and service. But the FOOD was outstanding. We had the pasta and salmon dish. YUM. Somehow we were lucky enough to have the chef bring out the food! 14/10 recommend read more

My wife and I went to Hank's for brunch with our little boy and no real expectations. It looks like a nice enough place; we sat in the front covered patio area. Unfortunately, things went downhill from there. She had the Hank's breakfast, which is your standard potato, eggs and breakfast meat affair. She complained that the sausage was low quality and the potatoes tasted like they had been sitting out for a while. Her sourdough toast was tough and greasy. I had the pastrami hash, which left me disappointed. It was mostly flavorless and the Brussels sprouts were undercooked. At least they didn't mess up the horseradish. The real complaint is the lousy service. We both got coffee, which was syrupy and unappealing. The cups were covered in an additional serving of coffee, and no attempt was made by our disinterested server to clean it up. At least we weren't offered a second cup the during the single "did everything come out okay?" fly-by. Hank's has the look and prices of a classy establishment, but the food and service are probably better compared to IHOP or Denny's. Not recommended. read more

I've been to Hanks twice for their happy hour with girlfriends and to their cafe a lot of times. Service has always been great and we haven't tried anything that we didn't like ( Love their drinks too!). The baked ricotta, cheese board, and frose are my favorites but I plan on trying something different next time. OH. And if you are in the cafe around breakfast time get the kolache and iced latte, so good. I've been enough times now that the bad reviews surprise me, it's a new restaurant so maybe they are still working some things out but my servers have always been super attentive. read more

The food is ok - the real problem is the staff! HUGE space with plenty of tables yet a crazy wait time - I presume because they were understaffed. Waiters and bartender (ONE during brunch on a Sunday!) were frazzled and could not get their act together - multiple parties were exasperated by how difficult it was to get anyone's attention. Hostesses were generally incompetent and had no idea how to improvise. When we finally got seated and moved over from the bar, our waiter was super awkward and had no sense of urgency whatsoever. He also tried to upsell us on every single item we ordered by encouraging us to add various "protein" or other extras to each of our meals AND drinks. The food was fine, but it was not a relaxing experience! It is a nice venue and there were basic instagram girls galore taking advantage of the space and lighting and getting food in the air pics, etc. but if the business thinks they can rely on that alone to drive their customer satisfaction, I don't think I will be back! read more

Honestly this place had some of the worst service of my life. We had a reservation at 7:45, when we got there we waited around for a while and then they finally came over and said they still had to bus our table before we could sit down. Then when we ordered drinks it took about 30 minutes to get half of our drinks, so we got up to ask someone and they were very apologetic and said they would hurry the drinks and hurry our food. But then the food STILL took forever, and our appetizers came with our meals. THEN, we ask for our checks around 9, and it's take me 50 minutes for them to figure it out and for us to finally leave. So this place is super super cute. We sat out side and the outdoor seating area is so airy and light and well decorated. The server was so nice and pretty attentive (although he did need to be asked for water refill and he also forgot my spoon for the soup but overall was pretty good) The food was very good. I got the turkey sandwich and it was HUGE! Very tasty and not dry at all. I ordered the tomato bisque as a side and was pretty excited about it but was let down. The soup was barely lukewarm. There was cheese in it and the cheese stayed as a big lump because the soup wasn't hot enough to melt it. We got dessert and it was the vanilla chantilly (sp?) and it was delicious!!! Highly recommend. 2 people in our group got the pesto rice bowl and they said it had good flavor but wasn't warm but not cold so it was a bit confusing as to what the appropriate temperature should have been. I really like the place and everyone said their food was tasty. I'd come back again just for the atmosphere. It's weirdly in a strip mall but on the corner so it kinda stands out on its own. But don't let that fact fool you, it's so nice. read more

Quite disappointed. My girlfriend had her 21st birthday brunch here with 20 guests expecting a good time. However, the staff ended up being quite unprofessional and did not help make her celebration a smooth one. Additionally, when we made the reservation they promised us a comfortable outside patio, but there ended up being flies all over our food. Staff spilled ketchup on one of our guests and did not apologize. Waitor rudely grabbed credit cards out of people's hands, felt like we weren't being well taken care of and were being rushed to leave. Asked for a to go box but never got one. Overall, was a very average experience, just expected more from Hank's. read more

Love, love the ambiance and the staff! We sat at the bar and enjoyed chatting with the bartenders. Each one was very engaging and helpful with ordering. The house margarita with spicy rim was EXCELLENT! I also tasted the Frose and loved it too! We thoroughly enjoyed the hummus plate for our appetizer...so fresh and yummy! My husband loved his burger. Unfortunately, I wasn't crazy about the pesto bowl (too much pesto for my liking) and they promptly told the manager and had it removed from our bill (when I told them it wasn't necessary!). Met with some friends there late afternoon recently(humidity was 90% to go along with 94 degree temp) and sat outside on the patio. Heat/humidity doesn't bother me (born in the islands) my friends although were. The fans are ineffective and the shades are as well. Our server was quite slow which added more to the frustration caused by the heat. In terms of the food quality that part was awesome. The Pei Mussels with the wine sauce right on the money and spicy margarita and frosé were perfect for such a hot day. All in all I love the setup(its a huge space which was unexpected) I know that the negatives above will eventually be taken into account. I would still recommend checking it out for yourself if you are a fan of local eclectic eateries especially in east Austin. read more

This place has the worst service, especially in the cafe portion. First of all, I have been here before for lunch and had a decent burger. The decor and the patio are beautiful. Very Instagrammable. However, that did NOT make up for my experience today. I went to order food at the cafe, which I had done in the past. The barista said they weren't taking orders but you could call the restaurant and get a to-go order. So I called the restaurant thinking I'd just go pick it up and sit in the cafe. The woman in the restaurant told me that I could order through the cafe. So I went back up there and told the barista what I was told by the restaurant. After saying saying, "No we don't do that," I finally asked if she could check. Of course she checks and she was wrong, you CAN order through the cafe. So I ordered a fried egg sandwich, which, according to the menu on the website, came with breakfast potatoes. Seemed reasonable since the price was $12. Sandwich came, no breakfast potatoes. It was one egg, which honestly was barely cooked and still had raw egg white all over, two pieces of bacon, some cheese and arugula slapped on a bun. Def not a $12 sandwich. So I asked the baristas if it came with breakfast potatoes. Again, they were clueless and didn't even try to check when I told them that's what it said on the website. I paid $12 for a SAD little breakfast sandwich - RIDICULOUS. The only saving grace is that they do have good coffee. BUT I highly recommend getting some sugar free syrups... read more

The location is nice. However the server took about 20 minutes to help us and the server had a little attitude like we were bothering his day. Then after a total of 10 min of getting one drink and the other drink order was messed up the server then decided to appear. We decided to leave because the server did not make us feel welcomed.
