Attended the adult Easter egg hunt on Easter Sunday! Love that it was limited to a certain number of people per hunt time and that they put this on for adults because you are never too old for an egg hunt. The drink included with the ticket price was nice. The people who were running the event from the restaurant were nice. We ate there yesterday as a lunch destination only to be fully disappointed & threw away half of a $30 meal. Ordered chicken & pork barbeque with cole-slaw, an order of loaded Tator Tots. We were the only ones in the restaurant for over 15 minutes. When other guest arrived, they were server before us. Chicken was freezer burned, with a sauce to hide the ruined meat, pork was over cooked and dry. I am guessing the cook a batch, freeze it then microwave serve. Tator Tots ($9) were covered with Cheese Whiz and bacon crumbles. I guess if you drink enough beer anything can taste good. Go there for the Beer and outdoors, but order a bag of Potato Chips to be safe. My friend got sick an hour after leaving. read more

I had a great time at the singo event tonight. The staff and food were great. I always enjoy the outdoor area every time I go. I will say tonight's evening was severely dampened when a groupof 6-7 men wearing club regalia sporting the confederate flag came in. I was immediately uncomfortable as were a number of other guests. One lady I didn't know stoped me and mentioned that she was also leaving due to feeling uncomfortable after their arrival. I really enjoy this spot. The staff and food are great. I recognize it is not the restaurants roll to police the the politics or clothing of their patrons. However I will not be coming back while individuals wearing racist iconography are welcomed or tolerated. It's too uncomfortable. Ill talk with my dollars and go elsewhere. read more

I love the aesthetic country Virginia feel to this establishment. The bartender that was on duty this day was NIC and he was extremely knowledgebale and helpful for my first time experience. I appreciate him taking the time to give us a heads up that a large Grubhub order had just came in and the wait would be a little longer, he then offered us drinks while we waited. What a ROCKSTAR! I ordered the Pulled Pork, Cole Slaw, Potato Salad, & Collard Greens! I must say that everything was made to perfection. The savory flavors of the bbq sauce with the juicy tender pork, the potato salad reminded me of my grandmothers back home, and the greens for sure someone put their heart and soul into it ! I was looking forward to the bbq I was told they have good bbq. Let's just say everyone's taste buds are very different. I ordered burnt ends, tots, cornbread, and a baked potato. My plan was to take the baked potato home for lunch the next day! Where do I begin the burnt ends weren't burnt at all it was more like stewed beef in bbq sauce. The corn bread was so dry, it crumbled in your hand as you tried to taste a piece. Not to mention no flavor at all. The tots were cold. I thought how could you possibly mess up a baked potato, but it's possible when you under cook it. I was more annoyed at the end when you close out your bill and you can't see the itemized bill till after you pay. What kind of system is that? One that needs to be revamped. To find out my bill was $33 I asked the guy what the hell was I charged for? So apparently my non burnt ends meal was $23 dollars for 3 chunks of beef, piece of cornbread and 20-2 12 tots. I took a stab at this place this past week. I ordered fried deviled eggs for a starter and the ribs with cornbread, Mac N'Cheese, and collard greens. The deviled eggs were delightful! The cornbread was burnt and very dry, I needed a lot of water to get it down. The ribs were not smoked, just seemed to be grilled. The Mac N'Cheese was pretty good. The collard greens stole the show, they were tender and had the right amount of salt and a perfect kiss of heat (spicy). I ordered German chocolate cake and red velvet cake for dessert. Be careful, I got charged $30 just for two slices of cake and they definitely weren't $15 a slice good. As for the atmosphere, it's small on the inside but opens up to a big outside area with a few fire pits and outdoor seating. The service was ok, nothing to write home about. It was frustrating that they didn't have sweet tea because they ran out of sugar. At a place that cooks Southern meals you have to have sweet tea, it complements the food. read more

My coworkers and I met up here for a Friday after/work hangout and had a great time. It was a beautiful day and they had good outdoor seating along with fun games like corn hole and darts. The service could have been better. There were times that we were trying to order but didn't get acknowledged. Also, I wish they had buzzers for when our food was ready. It was incredibly difficult to hear our names getting called out. For food, we ordered burnt ends, bourbon bbq wings, and loaded tots. I honestly wasn't impressed with the wings and would not get them again. We also ordered crushes and they were very good. After all the savory, we had to get some dessert because we saw the cool cake display when we came in. The cake slice size was a little intimidating but surprisingly light and flavorful. Cool spot for a fun night out with friends. We were there for their weekly team trivia. The drink selection is impressive; I tried two different ciders, both of which were crisp and refreshing. The food is great as well, I had the pastrami reuben, which was flavorful and perfectly prepared. The strawberry shortcake slice for dessert was a sweet finish to the meal, with just the right balance of strawberries and cream. The main drawback is the difficulty in hearing when orders are called. The place gets quite busy, making it hard to catch your name amidst the noise, and the distortion in the speaker system (which seems to be in dire need of repair). Parking can be a challenge, as the lot is quite small and fills up quickly, and street parking in this area is a whole other battle. Despite the minor inconveniences, Hank's Filling Station offers a wonderful combination of great food, drinks, and entertainment. However, the night I visited every IPA was a hazy/NE style. The reason I can't give this place 5 stars is for the BBQ. I guess a decade in Carolina has made a bit more selective about BBQ. The price for a burnt end plate was $24, and for that, I honestly expected more. The portions were small, and lacked the caramelization I'd expect to see in a good burnt end. They were a good balance of lean and fatty, but I've had many better burnt ends than these. The sandwiches and appetizers that others ordered looked great, and the men's restroom even had a changing table - which is a pet peeve of mine when they don't. All in all, I'd go back to Hanks, but would skip the higher priced BBQ plates in favor of a sandwich, and spend the difference on another beer. read more

Solid place to have beer & BBQ while hanging out in their adult playground of a backyard area! I love the layout of Hank's. You have the option to order and sit inside or do all of that outside where there is plenty of seating and a cool setup for outdoor games including cornhole. As someone who isn't super fond of beer, I'm glad that they serve up fun cocktails as well. Their BBQ is also pretty good too! The only thing holding me back from that fifth star is that the food is a tad bit overpriced. You're paying $20+ for a rather small portion of BBQ in my opinion. This place was horrible. I wanted to give this place another chance after going here previously with a good friend of mine. I was unimpressed with the portion sizes then, but the food was decent. My girlfriend and mom had seen the local advertisements on Facebook and had wanted to go here to try Hank's prime rib Thursday special. We got here just after 6 and it wasn't busy at all. Ordering didn't take any time at all, and I was surprised to see my mom's meal come out quickly. She noted that the meat looked raw, and at the time I chalked it up to her refusal to eat anything that wasn't well done. Her loss, right? It took about another 10 minutes before our order was ready despite being right after hers and the place being nearly empty. I started on my mac and cheese first. The steak looked a little on the rare side, but I'm not the squeamish type toward that. I took a bite of the steak to find it colder than room temperature even after just receiving it. Wow. I'm speechless at this point. I've never returned anything, but this forced my hand. I had to take all 3 steaks back after we spent over $60 on the meal between the three of us. The employee said he would have the cook sauté the food more. His excuse somehow for the cold food is that they usually do that special for takeout, which I had a hard time understanding. Upon receiving the food I checked the temperature with the back of my hand thinking it would be satisfactory and returned to our table. After passing the steaks back out we observed that the although the steaks had been warmed they weren't cooked in a pan as indicated. You can see the marks on the steaks in the attached showing that more than likely they were microwaved in the original position I handed them to the employee. My mom refused to eat hers, and a portion of mine was raw. See the picture. The establishment was given the opportunity to fix the issue and failed. I don't recommend anyone come here, and in fact I would have people steer clear of this place if possible. This is probably the worst restaurant experience I've ever had. read more

This place is amazing! Food (5/5): We ordered the All The Way dog ($5) and a Philly Rachel ($15); they were AMAZING. I wasn't able to finish the Philly Rachel, but every bite was perfect. Ambiance (5/5): Inside where you order is very casual and has quite a bit of seating for the space they have. You order at the bar and then wait for your name to be called on the loud speaker out in the backyard. They had trivia bingo going on so we were able to join in on the tail end of that. It was about to storm, but still packed with people. Service (3/5): It took a long time to get our food out. We had a party of 4 and ordered the same 2 items 1 min apart, but our food came out 15 mins after theirs; they finished their food before we even got ours. We thought they lost our order. Totally surprised! We drive by Hank's Filling Station pretty regularly as it's right on Colley but had never stopped in. I was completely surprised by the setup. You walk in, order and there's indoor or outdoor seating. The outdoor seating is very much "picnic" vibe and we loved it. They call your order over an intercom when it's ready. The atmosphere was very casual with a mix of ODU students and Norfolk locals! I tried the Cuban based on recommendations from the bartenders. It was very good, but not traditional. There was a layer of pork BBQ which gave the sandwich an interesting flare. My husband got a Rachel (like a Rueben but instead of sauerkraut, it has coleslaw) and he loved it. We shared an order of the Mac and cheese that was loaded with all kinds of cheese. The margarita I got was delicious and the staff friendly. If you like to enjoy a fave beverage and maybe play pong or Corn hole and table soccer this is the place for you. The only thing we found better than the beverages or food is the service. Once you go there once they treat you like family. My wife and I found this place while attending to our daughter who inpatient at the Norfolk heart hospital for the past 3 1/2 months and the service and the outpouring support was unlike anything my wife and I experienced from any business. Hank's is the epitome of cool -- it's got the chill bar vibe inside and an amazing outdoor patio area for you to kick back, enjoy a drink or two with friends, and maybe play some cornhole or darts. They also routinely screen films out back, which is a really fun communal activity. At happy hour, they do a cool thing where you roll the dice -- if you get a 1, your drink is $1 - a 2 is half price - a 3 is $1 off. 4-5-6 are all regular price, but hey, you had a shot! When I was in, I got lucky and rolled a one on the glass of wine I ordered (which was supposed to be $8) -- so it's definitely a fun twist on happy hour. As far as the food goes, it's alright -- every time I've ordered, I haven't been blown away, but I also haven't been underwhelmed either. It's just good solid pub food. It's good for drinks but my husband and I both got food poisoning there after we ate lunch. I had a California club and he had a BLT and they were both awful! I only ate half of my sandwich. I felt sick for 6+ hours afterwards. They didn't put any mayonnaise on my sandwich either! It was the driest sandwiches I've ever had. I went a few months ago and had the fried deviled eggs and they were awful too. Tasteless and I don't know what was fried about them. They had some powder over the yolks. It was weird. We love Hanks!!!! Their happy hour is awesome: bartenders let you roll the dice for dollar drinks or other various discounts. The bartenders are great, and always helpful with suggestions when needed. The big draw with Hanks is the awesome outside area. Plenty of picnic tables, high tops with anorandak chairs, benches, a fire pit, lots of games. It's very kid friendly and keeps everyone entertained. The bar window to the outside is great and makes it easy to order drinks without going in and out. We've tried a handful of food items over the many times we have been, and while we usually go for the drinks, the food is every bit as worthy. The pretzel knots are always a favorite: "served with Coelacanth's beer cheese and Yorgo's everything seasoning." A very generous amount of both pretzel knots and cheese. Last night I tried the Crawfish Mac, and I will absolutely be going back for that one. Large chunks of crawfish tails throughout, a creamy brie base, and a cajun crumble on top that really added to the texture profile of the dish. Get in there and check it out! Great spot to try for bbq. I was shocked that they even have vegan bbq. I live the back porch seating area with games and fire Pitt. I don't think I would sit inside tho. Staff is super friendly. Food is good and drinks are plentiful. Believe it or not they offer mimosa bottle service a this bbq Pitt which I think was awesome. I love that Hanks frequently has events at their location. I would definitely follow them on social media to keep up with the entertainment being offered at this facility. Great hang out spot for a nice spring or summer evening. The backyard atmosphere comes complete with group fire pits, ping pong tables, corn hole boards, and live music. Hank's reminds me of that one neighbor who fires up the grill and has invites everyone on the block over to his house for a good time. Everytime I've been here the place has been a great time. From the service to the layout inside and the ability to go outside but still order on each side is convenient. Plenty of games outside to play & good amount of seating overall. The parking can be a little rough considering but not too bad! The food can be hit or miss, but I think it's all dependent on what you order. All of us enjoyed our food and could not have been more pleased with the timing it took for it to be done. Plus, it was nice they had a vegan/vegetarian options, so a friend of ours ordered the Jackfruit totchos and honestly I had never had jackfruit before but it was pretty good. I would recommend.
