This place was my mother's day lifesaver. I originally had reservations at another restaurant. After a long wait. Even having reservations. We only received our appetizers and after one hour I lost patience since it was only fish that we both ordered. My husband paid the bill and we left. He suggested this restaurant and we have eaten here several times before. We ordered my food to go. I ordered the flounder topped with crabmeat and green beans. It was delicious. I realize it was Mother's Day. So I appreciate being able to place the order to go. My husband was happy and so was I. The food hit the spot. What a happening place! Hidden little gem full of staff who are amazing - literally wiping cabinets and booths between service runs (unheard of!). She asks for our order to which I requested accommodation for an eating program preference. She understood her menu and gladly fired an absolutely delicious rockfish with steamed broccoli! My husband ordered the fried flounder, hush puppies & rice pilaf which he loved - the fish was perfectly battered and had a delightful crispiness to it; the tartar sauce is one of a kind! My rockfish was gently seasoned and broiled to perfection with a light drizzle of olive oil. It was accompanied by a tender half head of vibrant green broccoli! The Crab Dip was very greasy and sat heavy in the stomach. The main dish with the shrimp platter made up for the dip, but there were only 6 shrimps on the plate, which in my opinion, was not enough for what the price is worth. I feel bad just now leaving a review because before last night, we always really enjoyed a quick dinner here. We have always wanted to sit at the bar but never been able to. Hopefully, we never will again. The bartender, who never introduced herself, could not have seemed more annoyed to have customers and spent most of the time talking to the two employees who sat at the end of the bar. We ordered oysters to start- I'm not convinced they were the right ones but oh well. I had a few questions about the Tomato & Crab Soup and wish I would not have ordered it. It was nothing more than a can of diced tomatoes, a few cans of other vegetables, and some crab meat. Zero flavor. Extremely bland. The Andouille Corn Chowder did not impress us either. My family came here while on a group vacation. We were craving seafood and looked for a good spot in the area where we were staying. They were pretty packed and there was not much seating in the main dining area so we had to sit in their front room, near the entrance. It wasn't too bad but service was affected a bit. The serving sizes are huge. The food was a bit bland but it was definitely very filling. Their hush puppies were not the best but they could pass. They were too big and hard for my kiddo. She did not like them with her fried shrimp. We had fried fish and shrimp po'boys. The Mac & cheese side was so tasteless. Hubby had a chicken sandwich and that thing was completely dry. I came here last saturday with my family ad we were VERY happy with the service and the food we recieved during our visit. Our server was the wonderful Amanda, and she was very patient, kind and knowledgeable about the menu and the specials of the day. We had tried the wings, the stuffed jalapeños, the tomatoe and crab soup, the Halibut special, the jambalya with blackened catfish, the fried red snapper, The the mac n cheese, the kids burger, the Bread pudding (DELISH! ), the coconut cake ( soooo rich), and the Chesapeake Beer. All of the food was top tier and we intend to return when we are in the area. It's high time I provide another Shucks review. They've treated me so well over the years and I've come to know and love many of their staff. I want to thank them for everything they've done for me. Probably the kindest gesture they provided me was after my dad passed away in July 2020. He was suffering from diabetes - we caught it fairly late and his entire body was slowly shutting down. After he had heart bypass surgery, things took a dark turn and he was gone 7 days later. Obviously, I was devastated. At the same time, it was tough to process everything because my mom was grieving, too (she unexpectedly lost her younger brother 2 months earlier). I put up a front by staying strong for the both of us, but it was extremely difficult. Anyways, I didn't do much for about 2 months, but finally made myself get out of the house. I ended up at Shucks, where I was greeted with hugs and well wishes from the staff. I had some meaningful discussions with them, too, and, wouldn't you know it, they wouldn't let me pay for dinner. They didn't have to do that, especially with the shutdown affecting all businesses. I felt them offering their condolences was beautiful enough. They went out of their way to make me feel normal again because they treated me as part of their family, which I cherish. Thank you, Shucks, for everything. You are the best. JV read more

We came in for dinner yesterday and we're seated in the patio area. We were given menus and patiently waited for our waitress. Another party was seated shortly after and the waitress came to take their order. Another couple of guests came in not long after the first ones that came in after us and the waitress came over to help them, meanwhile not one person came to take our order and we were there first. We got up and walked out. Both parties were white, which we felt discrimination. One thing for sure is our green money spends everywhere so we took our business elsewhere! If I wrote this review at the beginning of the meal, it would've been 5 stars; however, after we got our food, our waiter disappeared. Long story short...we waited at a cleared table for 45min before we were able to pay and leave. Long story long... It wasn't that busy, so we were seated right away. I was initially impressed with our waiter as he took our order quickly and had it memorized without writing it down. The cocktails were great, and the food was delicious. Other staff members brought out all of our food and drinks, but our server came to check on us once after we had our food. After that he disappeared. When we had finished, yet another staff member cleared our table. We were sitting at an empty table for a bit, and finally, our server came by and said he'd bring the check...and then we waited another 25min to get the check. After giving him our card, he went to take other tables' orders. We were waiting about 45min total at an empty table - water glasses and everything cleared- before we had completed payment and were able to leave. The menu said that 18% gratuity was automatically added to the check for parties of 5 or more. Our check had 20% gratuity added, which would have been generous for the poor service received. At that point, we'd been waiting for so long we just paid without saying anything so we could leave. At the beginning of the meal, I was commenting how I wanted to come back with more family and this would be my regular spot for crab legs. Delish!! Let's see my husbae and I have visited this restaurant about three maybe four times now. Each time, we love it more and more! I love the vibe inside and I love the set up as well. We have dined in all the seating options... at the bar, at a table top and even in the outside like seating area. Each time our server has been on point and the food, simply irresistible. My husbae is in love with their catfish. It is plentiful and always a hit with him. I believe it's blackened. I love the salmon. I've had dessert here too, on my first visit earlier this year. I cannot recall what I had but check out my pics from Feb. 2021 and you should see it... it was devine! The cocktails are a real treat too. Parking has never been an issue for us. But I do suggest you call ahead of time to check to see if there is a wait to be seated. We have tried this each time and have been successful at being seated upon arrival. Very cute and reasonably priced place for seafood. We showed up with no reservations and were lucky enough (considering Vday weekend) to only have to wait 30 mins for a table. We ordered glasses of wine and the mussels to start. They were very good and loved the sauce they were in. We shared a large order of the steamed seafood combo. It was great to get such a large variety: oysters, crab legs, clams, potatoes, corn, sausage, and shrimp. All was delish. Our oysters weren't cracked open so the server was perceptive enough to notice and immediately took them back to have them opened. They were plump and very good. Their hushpuppies were very good as well. Ended with a slice of their delicious strawberry cake cheesecake combo. I think it was a special for valentine's. I would order this again..and again. Went here for a lunch date yesterday, and loved it! My boyfriend and I got drinks and our server recommended the Pink Lemondroptini. I thought it was quite nice, a little sour and a bit sweet. I didn't realize it came with a sugar rim, so that was a pleasant surprise! We also ordered the Oysters Romano to start, and it was probably the best experience I've had with oysters ever! As for our mains, he got a half shrimp, half oyster Po'Boy with a side of Mashed Potatoes, and I got Fish and Chips with Garlic Green Beans. He said it was really good, and having taken a bite of his potatoes I'd say so as well. As for myself, their fish was super hot and crisp. The french fries are definitely some of the best I've ever had though, that's for sure! They are super crisp and seasoned very nicely, I know it's a bit basic of a side, but I'll be getting them every time I go here now. The green beans are nice, fresh and seasoned well. Their remoulade sauce is also quite nice, very cajun in taste, and adds a bit of flavorful spice to whatever is being dipped into it. At the end we split a piece of chocolate cake, which was a nice touch to the end of our outing. It was a bit basic, but nice in chocolatey flavor. It came with some good whipped cream as well! We devoured it in probably 5 minutes or less. Overall, definitely coming here again, cute little place with good food is always great! read more

A hidden gem! Walking past, I never would have expected this spot to have such fresh and tasty seafood. The interior looks like a dive bar that only serves burgers and onion rings. While I have heard great things about their burgers, I was sticking to seafood. The seafood menu is pretty vast with plenty of options to choose from and a fresh catch of the day. I ordered the salmon special which came with a veggie and potato hash topped with a herby chimichuri sauce. So delicious and the fish was fresh and cooked to perfection. Awwwwwwww shucks y'all! The name just reels ya in even though it's technically A.W., doesn't it? Came here for dinner with friends and boy did I struggle with finding the place. It's in the shopping center across from pixels next to the coastal place. Inside of restaurant is pretty tight. If sitting at a table, you will definitely be touching backs with the party behind you so we opted to sit at the big booth, but were told we had to be up by 8 (which was no problem!). Started off with the dragon berry drink which was cute & dainty; a bit watered down though. A lot of us ordered the crab cake sandwich so our waitress suggested it broiled for sake of flavor and...it's a no for me dawg. It just wasn't that good & I've been on a crab cake sandwich tour the last couple months with this being restaurant #3. The bun was also a little stale so I couldn't even eat that. The sauce it comes with though?? The fries??? The lemon cake cheesecake???? Yes, yes, and yes! The cake was immaculate. Tasted even better once I got home & left it in the fridge for a little bit. This place is so homie and warm! Loved the esthetic and the food was really good! The standing bar is missed opportunity in my opinion. While we went it was a shift change and we stood at the standing bar but weren't served or helped I think it's more of storage area for them but that's a great opportunity for this waiting to be seated. The food is decent. The fish and chips is served with some type of thousand island type sauce. It's different and honestly doesn't really taste all that well with fish. The fries were amazing though. Crisp and salty. Everything you want in a good fry. The crab dip was also very different. It wasn't like any other dip I've had. It wasn't bad but as far as flavor goes I wouldn't put it down as a typical crab dip. The service wasn't too great. Only saw them to get the orders and deliver them. So take that for what it's worth. Don't get the shrimp and grits app. Probably the worst I've ever had, despite a nice presentation it was pretty flavorless and had an odd charbroiled taste to it. However, the main issue was our waitress's behavior, she was very... strange! She barely spoke when she came to and from the table. She reached across us for plates to clear the table without saying a word and for refills she just very awkwardly grabbed our cups and walked away. We let it go because I just couldn't tell what was even happening. At one point she said "I'm just bad with words today" and even though that was also weird we just laughed it off like "okay, yeahh that happens".. ironically she had two other tables near us of Caucasian families that she would stop at and talk and laugh for minutes at a time.. I mean it's whatever but still very strange that you're basically stoic when at our table and walk 3ft away and become the bubbliest person ever. All of the other servers were super nice when they checked on us so I'm not sure what her issue was. It was my sister and I along with two kids just having a quick dinner before my nieces cheer practice. I would go back but if I get her as a waitress I'd definitely respectfully decline. An overall ok experience at A W Shucks. BTW, I love the name. We had originally intended to get some seafood to go, but the hostess told us that the kitchen was no longer taking orders. However, we saw a waitress taking the order of another table so (understandably) we were a bit confused. That said, we were told that it was fine for us to dine in, but we could not do carry out. You mean to tell me that you cannot prepare food to go, but it was fine to dine in? Couldn't someone just order food at a table, request to-go boxes, pack up their own food, pay, and leave? After dealing with the brief dine-in/carry-out confusion, things went pretty smoothly. Since I had a craving for crabcakes, I went with the crabcake sandwich with a side of hushpuppies. I will say that both my sandwich and hushpuppies were absolutely delicious. The sauce that accompanied the hushpuppies (a honey/butter concoction, I think) was out of this world amazing. If I'm back in the downtown area and have a craving for seafood, I more than likely would return to A W Shucks. Fresh, sweet up front, perfectly balanced. Wow. As for the rest of the food... Great calamari, moist, crispy. Steamed clams are sweet and perfectly paired with garlicky collards and beans. Steamed shrimp, very good. Fresh, perfectly seasoned and cooked. Surf and turf, medium rare cooked steak, seasoned. Plump shrimp, garlicky green beans and sumptuous fries. I cannot believe that I have been sleeping on this place for so long. A W Shucks is tucked away on the corner of 22nd and Colonial in Ghent, and it's been on my list of places to try. I recently had a chance to stop in with a friend, and I'm glad that I did. I live for a good Po' Boy and their's was absolutely delicious as well as served a nice sized portion. I loved that they let me customize my sandwich with two different types of meat; I got buffalo shrimp on one side, and fried oysters on the other. Both sides were absolutely delicious, seasoned to perfection, and went so well with their house made the remoulade sauce. Even though both sides were delicious, I do have to say that I preferred the oysters to the buffalo shrimp. In addition, their "Summer in Winter" sangria with fresh fruit was nice and strong and had me sitting right after a hard week at work. Overall, I left A W Shucks full, tipsy, and happy. I wish I had more room to try one of their desserts, but I will try them on my next visit because I was seriously eyeing that Reese's cheesecake and that chocolate mousse cake. read more
