It's a quiet, out of the way Hannaford that typically keeps stuff well stocked. The staff can be a bit of a hit and miss at times though.

When we entered the building, it was the quaintest, little urban shop--a counter with prepared foods on the left and a trendy restaurant entrance on the right. The market in the middle was full of curated items intended to capture customers. From fancy jarred items to unique serving tools, there was a curiosity around every corner. When we looked over the divider to the bar area, we were captivated. They advertised a happy hour that included six dollar drafts and sangrias. So, we figured we would give it a try. My husband ordered a Peroni, and I ordered one of the three specialty sangrias--the garden sangria. Since the happy hour appetizer offerings didn't interest us much, we opted to order Kalamata Polenta Frites off the regular menu. When the sangria arrived, it was garnished beautifully. The muddled fruit was an intriguing addition to the semi-sweet wine concoction--truly garden variety. While my husband's Peroni was pretty straightforward, the polenta frites knocked our socks off. They were piping hot. They were incredibly crispy. They were creamy and flavorful in the center and accompanied by a complementary dipping sauce. An item we have never experienced before in our pretty diverse travels. Needless to say, we never made it to Chianti.

There's a lovely space where a private event was just about to start that is located right behind the bar area. Took a few minutes to walk around the market and everything is immaculate with lots of great choices. It's definitely much smaller than a regular supermarket, but it's an open, airy space that I understand was taken over by a local couple recently.

I don't like their sale signs, they are hard to see from a distance. Not like one competitor's that are bright yellow. This makes it harder for me to shop, since I only buy what's on sale. It makes good business sense, as there is a lot of traffic on NY 67 west and NY 50 north, particularly during the evening rush hour. Also, the only other grocery store reasonably convenient was the Price Chopper in the village of Malta, whose motto appears to be "More Roundabouts? Sure!" The store is actually quite aesthetically pleasing. It's well laid out, particularly the produce department. It's brightly lit, and the aisles are easily wide enough for shopping carts going in opposite directions to not interfere with each other. There's a large dining area in the front, with a utensils stand including a microwave. If you're a regular shopper at Hannaford, the organization of the store will feel familiar, except for the beer aisle being closer to the produce/pharmacy departments. It was well stocked and clean, though that's understandable, as it's only been open 6 days as of this review. A few nits: Disappointed that they don't have a hot air hand dryer in the men's room... the salad bar containers don't have the 4-digit number on them for ease of entry at the self-checkout stands (though the newer self-checkout software does have a nice search facility)... only 3 self-checkouts, and I predict there will be a back-up of customers wanting to use these, especially if any break down (which seems to happen more than it should). Of these, only the last one is likely to bother anyone. I'm certainly glad to see a Hannaford here, as opposed to what might have otherwise gone in.

My girlfriend described it as a "poor man's Costco" and it is sort of like that. It's a restaurant supply/food service company that so happens to have an "open to the public" retail operation as well. You'll find meats, seafood (including live lobster), produce, GIANT containers of mustard, ketchup, hot sauce, olive oil, you name it. They've also got plants/flowers for sale outside in the front. Inside also contains bread, milk, cheese, really all of the "essentials." In a pinch they do sell single rolls of toilet paper like you'll find in a hotel, and paper towels. They have some kitchen utensils if you're in need. Hell, I picked up a bottle of windshield washer fluid here too. Added bonus: they carry nuns of new skete cheesecake! If you aren't familiar with this, google it. It's made by local nuns and is delicious, puts Sysco to shame. $36 for a 4 lb cake. If they don't carry something here that you need, you can find it the dollar general or CVS that's right down the street. Despite not being anywhere near a full service grocery store, Green Mountain Food Service's store is a godsend for the depressed town of Whitehall. Remember to bring cash, or if you're someone who pays by check (how many people do that anymore?) you're covered. Same with EBT, that is accepted. GMFS does NOT accept credit or debit cards. There is an ATM and a restroom on site. Hours are 8 am to 5 pm Monday-Saturday. The store is closed on Sunday.
