This is a small second-rate grocery store with little to recommend it except closeness, especially when compared to other local Hannfords. Their customer service is almost non -existent. I have been a regular customer (3-5 visits per week) for 5 years, but there is not one single employee who recognizes me. Always too expensive, tiny, very low quality produce department and today a horribly tough and stringy New York strip steak. No it was not overcooked. I actually Sou vide cooked it for 8 hours at 126F to tenderize it. I knew to try this because I cut a piece of it a couple of days ago and it was stringy and tough with that try too. I knawed on a few bites and threw it away. Yes. The beef section is tiny and slim pickin's of very over priced product. read more

This is undoubtedly an older Hannaford, I'm guessing, based on its smaller size and the fact that the customer rest rooms are way in the back, behind the swinging doors you would typically go through as an employee going to the butcher area. But they have made excellent use of space here. Every area is well stocked (though cramped, especially produce), and above all, the store is exceptionally clean. I get the feeling this is maybe the only major grocery store in the area. I know some grocery store chains aren't always as focused on a store when it's the only one in town - I have never found that to be the case for any Hannaford! read more

On vacation from Mich and camping at Shore Hills in our 5th Wheel and did some grocery shopping at Hannaford Supermarket. It does have limited parking, our grocery store is the Kroger chain, huge store and huge parking lot. What do you expect, you are in Boothbay, what this area does not need is multiple businesses ( think Mc Donald's, Wynn Dixie to ruin the quaintness of this beautiful place) Husband and I had no problem at all with this grocery store, I was impressed with a lot of the areas and found just what we needed. Had no need to use the pharmacy, if you needed a flu or Covid shot you can go to Walgreens and try that store. We got checked out in a timely fashion and the employees were very friendly. Be careful what you wish for, Kroger's is huge and the people can be impatient and unfriendly and unruly and the store can be very confusing. Like every where, all places have the problem of being short of help and long checkout lines. I will gladly return to shop at Hannaford Supermarket while in Boothbay. Just your typical Supermarket with average prices and basic fare. It kind of reminded me a bit of an old-school shop-rite but more like the messy smaller PathMark. I guess when you are the only game in town , you don't have to be anything special. read more

While the grocery part of the store is generally good, the Pharmacy at my local Hannaford is pretty dysfunctional. Ive stood in line for 40 minutes to pick up a prescription. Today, I had a 1PM appointment for a Covid shot. When I got there, there was a line of about 15 people. The woman in front had been waiting 40 minutes. So why even pretend that appointments matter? I understand that finding people is difficult. i have heard that when temps are offered to go to Damariscotta, they generally recoil because the working conditions are so bad. Oh - and all the self checkouts? Thats a subject for another day. I really need a better pharmacy and a more personal grocery store. read more

Quirky and convenient The first Hannaford's was sort of started back in 1883 when Arthur Hannaford sold rutabaga and other veggies and fruits from his cart on the docks of Portland, Maine. Over the years the idea expanded until now there are about a hundred and eighty stores employing over 26,000 people. Most of the stores are in New England but a few are scattered across upper New York state. Most Hannaford stores tend to be on the small side and feature local items. This particular Hannaford in Boothbay Harbor just went through some pretty major renovations and although still smallish, has a nice, new feel to it. The aisles are still kind of narrow and things are still kind of organized in an odd, Maine type of way, but the store is very pleasant to shop in and has a friendly, small town feel to it. Hannaford's certainly isn't anything like the "super" groceries that are popping up all over, but then it doesn't try to be. It's a quirky, pleasant and very useful store that is designed to serve the local community. And this it does very well. read more

Have you ever been to prison? Me neither, but I can imagine that the prison commissary is a bit like this. When you are way down on the peninsula, there are no real options and you take what you can get. The employees know who the new inmates are (those from away, or like me, the summer resident) and have special favors for the long-timers that are not extended to the rest of us--oh, the line is too long? a magic lane opens, but only for the two locals in front of you still in their footie pajamas, and as you sneak in behind you will be greeted with, "You better only have 14 items." Express checkout lane apparently equals personal checks, no baggers, and the slowest of the employees that puts you neck-in-neck with the customer in the regular lane who had 147 items--so much for being in a hurry. I should know better, and remember that I am in the slammer. (Courtesy star for my insensitivity) The selection is pretty good, although with such small shelves, the aisles are filled with restockers throughout the day in the busiest season, nearly sending some customers to blows as they jockey for position. I swear I saw one with a shiv. The 2015 remodel is appreciated, and likely a commentary on the community, as the most notable expansion is the quadrupling of the liquor section, and an elevation from the corner of the store to the widest central aisle--frankly, I could use a drink after surviving a stint on July 3. Will I be back? Of course, recidivism is 100%. read more

When you are down the peninsula on the Maine coast, you get what you get, if you know what I mean. In the past, the Boothbay Harbor Hannaford was exactly that - you got the essentials and got back to the cottage. If you needed to do real shopping, you went to the large Hannaford over in Damarsciotta that is more of the mainland version. Surprise, surprise when pulling up the first night in to find not the 1960s version of a store, but a new front façade and entrance. I walked in and noted that the entire place had been transformed. The area in the front seems larger with a better produce and meat selection. It still had that small grocery store feel, but the layout seemed thought out this time and not thrown together and added on like the original store setting. Overall the selection worked and the quick check was, well, quick. Definitely happy not to have to trek all the way back up the peninsula any more. read more

i questioned whether it was tourist in the store that were rude, or whether it is the locals dealing with the tourist that may have been the rude ones; however, i believe this store captures the epitome of grabbing a shopping cart only to realize there are just 3-wheels to get you through the very tight and discombobulated display of groceries. i never knew how confusing a grocery store could be, and they carried food that i had no idea existed. they have what you may need, but it is truly the biggest grocer in this area... good luck. read more

This one is the only one in Boothbay but I will say it has a great selection of natural cleaners. Produce department has a good selection of veggies. Really impressed by the selection of mushrooms. Lots of great choices in their seafood department. Meat department has some awesome finds that I'm not used to seeing. I love all the organic/healthy choices that they stick in this store. They actually make sure to have a wide variety of alternative flours and grains. Pleasantly surprised by the amount of choices packed into this store. read more

It's the only 'show' in town!! There is only one grocery store here and Hannaford's is IT! This store is a manageable one. It is small and easily shopped in well under an hour which is how I like it. That means a lower selection of goods than some of the super stores, but that's okay with me. To find another grocery, you'd have to go out to Route 1 and head south to Shaw's on 1 or north to Damariscotta to a larger Hannaford's. Of course, you could always go to the Market in downtown, if you didn't need a wide selection...or just needed basic goods. This grocery store has a selection of liquor, beer and wine; a bakery and the usual other 'stuff.' We are captive shoppers here, but don't complain too much! read more

sorry to hear about "rude" but old time yankees are fairly direct and dont mess a lot with being nice. granite coast, stoney people. plus boothbay is way off the beaten track. only has about 1200 living souls in the winter. yup, your no longer in kansas when you come up here. people from away, and you sound like one, usually come up here to get away from their "civilization" and all its trappings. hanneford stocks "staples" and for that it works for the locals. otoh the dairy products are right off the farm, the fish about four hours old, and a lot of the meat was someone's cow about a day or so ago up the street so to speak. just think of this place as rough, boiled wool; not silk nor nylon. read more
