I was in the Hickory area today and looking for a good place for lunch. Been awhile since I have had BBQ and decided to try this one. What complicated things was that Susan was in Pittsburgh and I had Watson the Corgi with me and did not want to leave him in the car for an extended period of time. Walked in and was promptly seated although no thanks to my Iphone. I asked for directions when I was at the Mall and it said 5.3 miles and driving time of 2hours 13 minutes. Followed it and I knew something was off when ti told me to turn left onto NC 127 N and I knew it was NC 127S. Simple lunch of a Smoked BBQ sandwich with a side of Onion Rings. All was good and while I normally ask for no pickles. That said, if it's served with slaw, I normally ask for no slaw and it's not because I don't like slaw. I love slaw if it's fresh and nice and crispy and not soggy. Around here, you order something with slaw, the juice from the cabbage along with the mayonnaise become a slimy mess after 30 minutes. Was going to kick myself when sandwich came out but on first bite, the slaw was perfect with a nice crunch and texture to it. In addition, for my friend, Watson the Welsh Corgi, I ordered the Angus Cheeseburger with no buns, lettuce, tomatoes, or other condiment to go. Great service and very attentive. While I was waiting, my iced tea was refilled at least 4 times without asking. Looking over the place, not fancy and very rudimentary but clean and neat and very utilitarian. Sandwich came out and it was great. The BBQ is perfect and has the sweet taste that comes from hickory smoke. Was disappointed a first because it had no bite to it but then I realized the sauces were on the table and they were quite good. God Onion Rings as a side and they were great. I strongly recommend this restaurant because it hit all the marks and is a solid place to go. After I left, I drove home with Watson's Togo stripped down Cheeseburger and when we got home, he had half to the Cheeseburger and will get the other half tomorrow. My parents had been going to Hannah's for years. And, anytime I was in town, I made sure to go for their delicious pulled pork sandwich! I was able to take my Dad there for lunch after two years. He wasn't comfortable going out. But, a trip to Hannah's was worth getting out for him. He ordered the vegetable plate and while he normally eats like a bird, he almost finished everything on his plate! Of course, I had my favorite pulled pork sandwich and took one to go for my husband! We were travelling through Hickory and wanted some local barbecue for dinner. We decided on Hannah's BBQ and were instantly charmed by the decor and young lady who greeted us at the front! The menu had a lot of chose from. I opted for the BBQ pork plate with Brunswick stew and green beans. The pork was juicy and full of flavour. My mom had the brisket, which was debatably even better. After reading reviews for barbeque we decided on Hannah's. We are not from the area but I have a friend who always boasted the Hickory had NCs best BBQ. The restaurant is nothing special but it was clean and quiet. The waitress was very friendly. When an error was made and my wife was served the wrong side the error was quickly remedied. For the most part the food was good. The chopped BBQ was excellent and their hot NC style sauce may have been the best I ever tasted. On the way out I looked to see if there was a display of jars of the stuff to buy but I didn't see any. My wife had the brisket and said it was good. I also had a sampling of the ribs. They weren't bad but they were overcooked. The hushpuppies left something to be desired. They had a special on fried flounder and unless I miss my guess they cooked the hushpuppies in the same oil as there was a slight fishy taste. Prices were fine. My wife and I ate dinner for $25 including the tip. For me 4 stars is a good score as it is not now or will ever be a 5 star restuarant. read more

I ordered the pork plate and husband ordered the B.O.B. Sandwich (bbq on a bun). My plate had crinkle cut fries (seasoned just right) and bbq beans (tiny bit of a spicy kick) and was really good. Husband said his BOB sandwich "was one of the best" he's ever had. The bun was toasted ciabatta and had the right amount of pork on it, along with some spicy slaw (he says he wouldn't consider it "bbq slaw" but it was nice and pickled and not full of Mayo) and dill pickles. On our visit to North Carolina my wife and I wanted some real local BBQ. Hannah's was recommended. Upon arrival we were greeted and seated immediately. Our server,Tammy recommended the combo platter. My wife had the brisket,ribs and chicken with pinto beans with onions and fried okra. I had the chopped pork,chicken and ribs with macaroni and cheese,and BBQ beans. We each got 5 of the best tasting hush puppies. All of their sauces are house made,the vinegar base sauce was great. For dessert we each had some fresh baked blackberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream. Every thing we had was well prepared with good balance of flavors. I always like to try local places when I travel for work, and BBQ is one of my favorites so I was excited to try them out. However, I have mixed feelings after eating lunch here. I've always found that a good sign of a good BBQ spot is how good their Mac n cheese and hush puppies are. Both here are good which was a good start. Unfortunately the brisket was a let down. The meat itself didn't have a lot of flavor to it (but the house made sauces were good and had a nice flavor) and the slices I got looked more like bacon with the amount of fat that was on them. They either need to smoke the brisket longer so the fat breaks down and melts into the meat, or just trim that top layer off before slicing it to serve. The server was very polite and made sure to swing by the table a few times to check on things. Overall, I'd say they are middle of the road (based on this one visit). Not bad, but not somewhere I'd be dying to come back to. read more

The sauce that they place on the table for it isn't that great. It has a nice flavor, but not what I wanted. The mac and cheese was watery. Excellent BBQ! Tender, tasty and plenty of meat. If I lived closer, I'd be here once a week. Service was friendly and the business is very clean. I got the chopped pork sandwich and it had a great coleslaw on top, with a nice tangy NC BBQ sauce. The other reviewer said the fries were great. But I didn't think they were that good. They were thick and crinkle cut, but weren't that crisp and just an OK flavor. I probably wouldn't waste the calories again. But, definitely stop here for a sandwich if you are in Hickory. read more

First time eating here and I have to say that this is some real good BBQ! The pulled pork is tender and not dry, the BBQ baked beans come with shreds of the BBQ pork in it. Hannah's is great if you are wanting chopped pork. I notice most of the negative reviews are folks getting things other than what Hannah's is known for. Go for the chopped pork plate with white slaw and fries or onion rings and you won't go wrong. It's the best value and comes with great hush puppies. I love that they offer BOTH vinegar and ketchup based sauces. Folks from both sides of the BBQ sauce battle can eat in harmony. read more

The Ribs I had were tired and dry. May have been originally cooked a few days ago and reheated. Had an after taste of having been chemically smoked. The French fries were the crinkle cut bag variety but we're prepared well. The hush puppies were actually pretty bad. Somewhat rubbery in texture. Definitely not made on the premises. Most likely from a bag of frozen. Taste, even for hush puppies, was fairly bland. The service was attentive and friendly. The 127 location has always got a fairly good crowd. Great chopped bbq! Friends brought us some bbq from Hannah's while visiting us in Ohio, so while visiting NC we had to stop in and check it out. We didn't have the address and couldn't find it in Hickory while "searching" in maps but luckily our friends gave us directions to it. We all had the smoked chicken and it was good but I'd say the chopped bbq is there speciality. You can get bulk bbq to go so yeah, we've got 5 lbs to take back to share with friends. This is the second time my call in order has been wrong!!! The first time I went to the pick up window and received my food, drove away with my daughter going through the plates. She asked "who ordered apples?" Is when I realized something was wrong. I pulled into a parking lot, OPENED ALL the plates and nothing was what I ordered. Drove back , went in and explained none of the food was my order, the girl took the ENTIRE bag and gave it to a car waiting at the pick up window! Really! Second time I called in an order, my husband picked it up. One plate was wrong so I called them and was told they could take my name and give me a free chicken plate later. Well great but, what about now? I would like some dinner! Not a very good way to do business. Food is fair at best. We love Hannah's and it is the ONLY BBQ place we eat. My son LOVES their sweet tea and drinks it by the gallon. No where else will do for him. When we go out to eat, this is our go to joint. Everything about it is wonderful, the food, the service...EVERYTHING. The variety on the menu is great, and I have never had anything that I wouldn't order again. You can tell they have a passion for what they do, and they do it very well. The waitresses are great and the service is beyond.
