I was passing through Statesville around lunch and saw the mountain of reviews for Randy's BBQ, so I made a quick detour to see what the hype was about. I got the large BBQ tray with pulled pork, hushpuppies, and white slaw (because white slaw is obviously the correct choice) plus fried cream corn nuggets after my girlfriend recently turned me onto them. Randy's feels like it's been serving the same loyal customers longer than I've been alive. I actually did a double take when I saw a sign saying they accept personal checks. I'm sorry... what year is it? The pork was good though not life-changing, not something I'm asking Santa for at Christmas, but solid / familiar NC BBQ. The white slaw was damn near perfect: finely chopped, fresh, and just needed a little more sweetness and creaminess for me. The hushpuppies were fried balls of heaven, and the corn nuggets were awesome too. My only real complaint: $22 for lunch. Guys... come on. I understand BBQ takes time and effort, but pulled pork isn't gold. A few ounces of pork and a handful of hushpuppies shouldn't have me checking my credit score afterward. Overall, I liked Randy's... it was an old-school BBQ joint with excellent sides and clearly a loyal following. Would I stop again if I'm in Statesville? Absolutely. Would I drive out of my way for it? Probably not. Would I enjoy paying $22 again? Definitely not. read more

I hate to say this about a long standing institution but don't get a hot dog. First time getting one instead of bbq and it was a mistake. The footlong dog was very shy of condiments, especially chili and slaw. But the real issue was the dog itself. It tasted bland and boiled and had no snap to the casing which makes a good dog. Granted, this is a bbq joint but usually the other food is pretty decent. NOT the hot dogs! Fortunately the bbq is outstanding and should have stuck to that. read more

Everything from start to finish was delightful! Super friendly staff, fun old school diner look inside, the cleanest public restrooms and THE BEST BBQ EVER! We get to visit this establishment once every few years on our trip to Disney and cannot wait to eat! We each had chopped pork bbq sandwiches with a side of hush puppies. Wonderful off the beaten path place! We had sliced and chopped bbq, red and white slaw and hush puppies. Everything was very good. Try the runnier more vinegar tasting bbq sauce in your red slaw! Found myself in Statesville for a training. Googled NC BBQ and came across Randy's, so I checked it out. Great local feel. Seems family run and you can see the teamwork in the staff and the family kids walking around learning the business. Cash and check only, but they have an ATM machine at the entrance. Staff was very cordial and invited me to dine in when I said it was my first time in town. The menu was broad but I ordered the combo plate, grilled chicken and bbq with fries, cole slaw, and hush puppies. The chicken cutlet was one of the juiciest and well seasoned pieces of grilled chicken I've had in a while. It caught me by surprise and tasted even better with some blue sauce. The blue sauce on the left was like a more vinegar forward Sweet baby rays, it was my favorite of the two sauces. The red sauce was a bright and tangy vinegar sauce. The hush puppies were crispy on the outside soft in the inside and well seasoned. The fries were standard, not greasy and crisp. The pork had good flavor alone and adding both red and blue sauce and pairing with the cole slaw put it over the top. The cole slaw cut the vinegar and made for a balanced bite. The plate itself was about $16 plus $2 for a drink with free refills. Great bang for your buck for some authentic NC BBQ. It's the most vinegar forward bbq sauce I've tasted in 10 years in NC and it was really good. read more

The whole family came here for lunch on a Saturday: four adults, a child and a baby in a high chair. Luckily, even with many cars in the parking lot, we were able to get a booth right away. The booths are long, comfy and clean. All the waitresses were super friendly and patient with us and our frequent bathroom visits, and unfamiliarity with the larger than expected menu. (Only two had been here before.) This is a bit different than what my husband and I expected from a "barbecue" place. But we've learned to expect the unexpected here in NC. We started off with fried pickles. Like everything else fried, including the sides of corn nuggets, okra, and hush puppies; the fried foods were great. Served up hot, crispy and not too greasy. My son and DIL had salads and my DIL had the baked potato. All were enjoyed. (My 9 month old granddaughter enjoyed the fluffy baked potato as well. Lol) My husband and my son both ordered BBQ combo plates and loved the pulled pork. My son had the chicken breast and enjoyed it while my husband thought the coleslaw was delicious but diced a bit too finely for his taste. My 7 yo grandson had the corn pups (little corn dogs) and fries and a serving of pulled pork (not pictured). He loved it all but said the pulled pork was his favorite. My DIL and I each had a foot long chili cheese hot dog. (It is a foot long hot dog with chili and cheese added on.) It was perfect. I had ordered the fried okra as a side with mine (delicious) but in hindsight, the chili cheese dog was enough food as is. (My DIL agreed. Both of us had eyes bigger than our stomachs!) Last, but not least, my DIL bought 2 bags of house made pork rinds (chicharrones). They sell them up front by the register in a variety of flavors. (So yummy!) Randy's BBQ was my first real taste of authentic Southern culinary. My favorite thing to get here is their crinkle-cut fries and their Brunswick stew. The place has an old-timey vibe to it, like what you would imagine a classic American diner to feel like. The waitresses are friendly and attentive, and are patient even with large parties (I always come in a group of five). My only real gripe is that they only accept cash and checks here -- neither of which I carry on me regularly. It may just be a "me" thing, but I'm not a huge fan of going out of my way to get cash or out-of-network ATM fees. For the lack of card and electronic payment options, it makes it harder to want to drop by spontaneously. Regardless, I'm a big fan; if I'm feeling barbecue or some good fries in Statesville, it's gonna be Randy's for me. read more

Very friendly, professional and attentive. Offered various menu item suggestions. Pricing - 4 Reasonable compared with other restaurants on that side of town. Rest rooms were clean and well stocked. The dining area was clean and they we're keeping the tables cleared. Over all a very clean and presentable experience. This location is open Wednesday thru Saturday. You can come on Saturday, but their food is popular so it is better to come earlier than Saturday since they do run out of some menu items. The flavors were very good. The chopped pork was tender and well seasoned with a smoky flavor. The coleslaw was smooth with a with a good texture. The baked beans were the surprise with a sharp mildly hot flavor. Not too hot and yet sweet and adds a great deal of flavor. I chose the small barbecue tray and there was still a large portion of each. So come hungry! Not a bunch of different sauses but the ones they have are very good. The servers are extra nice and always around to help or get you a refil. I was in town for work so I thought I would check this place out. My server Anais was very attentive and I actually struck up a very nice conversation with her. I ordered the daily special which was the taco salad. It was very bland-no seasoning or flavor to the meat at all to make my taste buds take notice. I covered it in hot sauce and sour cream which made it edible to me. The inside and outside was clean, including the bathroom. It is a cash/check only place, and in the 21st Century, is kind of a drag. They are a small business though so I can understand them thinking that it's just not worth it to them financially. I hadn't been to this spot in years -- In fact it was still the Carolina BBQ. Carolina always had great food, but it closed early and the ambiance left a bit to be desired. Randy has spruced up the place with new tables, chairs and flooring. Since I have eaten at Randy's in troutman several times, I was expecting the same high quality food. I was not disappointed. Was feeling hungry so I ordered the large bar-b-q tray. Totally unnecessary. Tray (comes in a plate, not a tray now) is loaded with a full pound of meat, a giant pile of coke slaw and 3 hush puppies. Looks like I have lunch for tomorrow. Still closed at 8pm on a Saturday; and it's cash only. But we'll worth the trip to downtown Statesville. read more

The hushpuppies are life-affirming. Fast and fresh these have some serious CRUNCH (not a bit greasy!) opening up to reveal a properly dense (not doughy but not donut texture light) inside that is steaming hot, slightly, sweet, slightly oniony, and VERY addictive. I'm not one for fried food but I ordered extra and BEGGED my boyfriend to come back for dinner. I joked on our return trip that we needed to Franchise a hushpuppy-only location up in DC. I had a small chopped tray for lunch this week at Randy's. The BBQ was very good, and the server brought me "half and half" slaw so I could try them both. I liked both. The red was great with the BBQ but the white was also good--it actually complemented it well with a bit stronger cabbage flavor and a little more crispness. Had written off Randy's after no service at the Mother store in Troutman but this newest location shows promise. Had dined at the original location in Troutman several times till one of those moments of awakening and realization that you, as a customer were incidental. I went to the Troutman store a couple of times but the last time which I will admit was several years ago, was a disaster and I have not been back sense. Walked in and there were three or four customers ahead of me which was no problem and I waited. All were able to place their order but when it became my turn, the two ladies at the front counter disappeared into the kitchen and at least the five minutes I stood there, never to be seen again. I suspect that this is an indirect attempt to control the flow into the kitchen so as to avoid overwhelming them but it leaves customers in limbo. Have not been back since. With interest, I followed the new location in Statesville which recently open. First of all, it is a huge improvement on the Troutman Location. Still cash only with ATM on site which is not convenient because I rarely carry more than 10$ in cash and while they have an ATM, you end up paying a service charge to use the ATM so what is the saving. Bottom line is that they do not want to pay the approx 5% fee from the Credit Card Company and they get a cut of the ATM Service Charge Fee. Adds to the cost of Lunch. Walked in and tried to place my order and was asked if this was dine in or to go. Said dine in and they told me to take a seat and someone would be there shortly. That did occur. I ordered the chopped BBQ Sandwich with a side of Okra. Order came out in a reasonable time but remember we are talking about BBQ. It's not a dish that is made to order but needs to be worked on for at least 10 hour if not longer. The BBQ Sandwich was good. The meat was nice an moist with a good smoky taste. The problem was the sauce. I like Eastern NC Sauce which is pepper vinegar based and they did have what was supposed to be and Eastern NC Style Sauce but it was anything but. The Okra was so oily that it was almost inedible. Overall evaluation was big improvement over the original Troutman location but still not quite there. I love BBQ and the Que was good but everything else need improvement. read more
