My husband and I ate there two years ago for the first time ever after moving to the area and it was so good and the woman who runs the place was so nice.... BUT TODAY (8/27/26) my husband and I wanted to go there again for a lunch date and when we went there for lunch. We went inside to order and the sane woman was there but this time she seemed super unfriendly this go around. I ordered some fried corn nuggets and I reminded her that the last time we were there that she told me she liked eating the fried corn nuggets herself when a fresh batch was put it. Telling her that didn't jog her memory at all. We waited for our food and we were the only ones eating there and I glanced around... the tables and stools looked like they hadn't been wiped down in a while. We got our food and our bbq meat was not hot at all... barely warm! There was no smokey flavor to the meat and most of it was soaked in some type of vinegar sauce which was nasty tasting. Come to find out, it was their House Sauce. I was able to get some thicker bbq sauce only upon asking a man behind the counter, as there were no sauce bottles on the tables. While eating, I saw a large garbage can with an orange lid near the tables. It was so gross looking that I was definitely done trying to eat at that point. I felt that at some point they could have replaced that can with a nicer looking one. We spent $34 and it was not worth it. The customer service was zero, the meat was bland, and there was no atmosphere. In town for our daughter's wedding, she had previously been in town preparing. She & fiancé tried several restaurants and loved Little Pugs. So we ordered a lot of food for rehearsal dinner the day before. All the meat and sides were quickly packed up when we arrived. Smelling food on the way to dinner was difficult. The Pulled Pork was amazing. Beans were great. Collard Greens were amazing - I managed to get one serving before they were gone! Mac & Cheese and Hushpuppies were great. Coleslaw was creamy and delicious. Plenty of sauces were provided. Not much was left after dinner. The only disappointment was the hot sauce. The owner said they made their own Ghost Pepper sauce. Well, what a tasty surprise it was to stumble upon this bbq place while we were near Hickory today. The place has been around since 1963 and it still has that old school charm with vintage chrome stools and booths - everything was in great condition! Service was friendly and quick; food portions were generous and tasty. I had the smoked pulled chicken combo - clean, smoky, juicy meat piled high on thr bun with vinegar slaw...not too zesty or that awful over-mayonnaised deli slop! Just perfect. No weird gristle or fatty pieces. Just good pulled smoked chicken piled high enough that I didn't eat the bun - just filled up on the contents of the sandwich instead! I'm an eastern Carolina bbq girl so this sauce wasn't my favorite but that doesn't mean it's not good! It's just not my cup of tea. It tasted very good and the fries and hush puppies were amazing! The atmosphere is cold & awkward. The staff were emotionless and acted as if the customers (other than the handful of regulars) were nuisances. We were confused with all the awards hanging around stating they had the best bbq because ours was terrible. My husband had the brisket which was rubbery anf bland and I had the ribs which were nothing but fat. The fries and hushpuppies were the only good thing in our combos sadly. The slaw was mediocre, nothing special. Oddly there are no menus, just one printed menu sat on top of the counter where you order food. Haven't been here since I was a child and was looking forward to it. I was so disappointed! It was NASTY in the dining room. We had to clean our table with a wet wipes and others ask if they could borrow some to clean their table. The wipe from my table is pictured. The owners wife asked "what is the problem" and do you need a rag to wipe the table! Humm, no I don't get a W-2 from you I really don't want to clean your tables! I guess I can start with a positive note on the food. The french fries were good and the tea was great. I managed to swallow one bite on my burger before wrapping it up and it went to the trash. The burger was so overcooked it was hard to swallow. The bun on the bottom side could have been used as a hockey puck! As we sat there it was close to closing time. A elderly lady came in and order. She asked the owners wife some questions about the food. As she walked up to the register the owners wife turned around and rolled her eyes and said something to herself. I sat and shook my head! This was a lady who was trying to support local business. I will say for sure that the 3 of us that were there will never support this business again! A local place that offers freshly made Q. You can hear the staff chopping your order while you wait, which is pretty cool. Atmosphere - local, clean, hint of smoke in the air, blue and white, neat setup of short tables and 50s style diner stools. Food - I ordered the chopped BBQ (pork) plate w/ a side of fries, coleslaw, and hush puppies. The chopped BBQ I received came preseason-ed/ dressed, which is something I rarely come across in the Carolina's. Normally, it would arrive without sauce. The sauce provided here is more tomato based than vinegar, w/ a hint of smokey flavor. The hush puppies I received were made fresh...as in when I ordered them. These puppies were savory in nature without any sweetness. Again, something I normally have not experienced with such an order. The coleslaw was okay and the fries were crinkle cut and a bit forgettable. Service - Local, friendly, and fairly quick. Price - Reasonable for what you receive. Overall - I enjoyed the fact that the BBQ was chopped after I ordered it (I think they smoke the meat on site) and the hush puppies I believe were the freshest I have ever experienced. Ok so apparently I'm not the only one who is going to complain about the atmosphere of the place. As one Yelper described, COLD, out of all the times I've been they have never been friendly. I ordered a children's cheeseburger through the phone. Comes with fries, drink, and a "snack." I get there to pick up my food and I'm told I can't purchase it because I ordered off the kids menu. The kids menu doesn't have ANY limitations as to age and I pointed it out the the cashier. I wasn't going to argue so I ended up paying over $6 for a "childrens" meal. Big pile of hickory outside, they do really smoke their meats, demonstrated by the smoke rolling out of their chimney every early morning. We arrived 3:30 in the afternoon, which may not be prime for any restaurant. Restaurant clean, staff helpful. We had a ribs plate and a BBQ plate. Ribs were excellent, full of flavor and juicy. BBQ was merely adequate; not much flavor and on the dry side. Chopped, not pulled. Hush puppies were good. Other sides regrettable. French fries were stale, unpleasantly chewy and lukewarm. Slaw was an unmemorable Mayo-based version w/o much flavor and no crispness. It was a cold rainy day. So perhaps they prepared food for a lunch crowd that didn't show up. I'm a trucker, and one of my stops is real close this wonderful place, so I've been stopping in every time I'm in town for the past 4 months or so. I've had Q from every state worth a damn having it from, and this is my freakin favorite. Places in Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, and Texas all have their smoked meats, but many places in those states do it with a tinge of pretentiousness. They go over the top to display a certain stereotypical "BBQ culture" like they're putting on a show. Not this place. This place is real, and honest in the most "this is how we've always done things, nothing special" sort of way. Lemme tell ya. I've tried bbq from all over this dang state, and no one has the balance down quite like these people. The perfect balance of just smokey enough, just vinegary enough, just sweet enough, with just enough kick. The meat is tender and moist, but not fatty and doesn't leave your lips all oily. The hushpuppies... Lord the hushpuppies! I can't even begin to describe them. I can't help but close my eyes and go mmm on the first bite every time. The sweet tea isn't as sweet as most it seems, but I prefer it that way. It doesn't distract you from what you're eating after you take a big swig. Love the interior, gives me a local run of the neighborhood feeling. The couple that runs it are very nice and and super friendly. I had their bbq pulled pork sandwich with fries and a sweet tea. If you like your BBQ with a vinegar taste then you'll love this place. I like my BBQ on the sweater side. You have to season the fries yourself and the sweat tea was not really sweat to me. An insult to TRUE barbeque and a slap in the face to those who love it. Let's start with this. This place USED to be amazing, I don't know if this place changed hands or what but my family would eat here regularly when I was younger. But within the last few years the quality of the food has dropped so far that it is laughable. And to make matters worse it seems that they jacked up the prices as well! They claim that they smoke their meats but this is a lie as there is absolutely NO smoke flavor at all in what they serve. Cooking meat over charcoal briquettes is NOT smoking! It just cooks the food, It doesn't impart any flavor at all! The portions are laughable as well. The last time I went I ordered a sandwich plate and got a tiny bun with a small scoop of the most watered down bland meat I have ever tasted and what would probably equate to a small order of fries from mcdonalds, And what was I charged for this insult? Roughly 8.00$. Yeah. This place is the sorriest excuse for a barbeque restaurant in town, If not the entire state. Steer clear. Horrible food quality. They lie about how they prepare their food. First off, I stop in at about every BBQ joint that I can to try to find the best local BBQ possible. The barbecue (chopped) here is the best that I have found. I have been to a bunch of highly reputable barbecue restaurants and this one takes the cake. The sauce is perfectly spicy and flavorful. The meat is excellent with or without sauce. Fries are cooked crispy but not burnt, and not too greasy. Hush puppies are worth going as it is. Sweet tea is amazing, having trouble finding anything bad obviously! Great hometown atmosphere and the members of the staff are all friendly. I have been several times just to make sure that it is not a fluke, and it seems to taste better every time. I have eaten here twice, and the only reason I did then was when I was having tires put on my truck at Whites Tire Service, I got really hungry, and because its before I discovered Dicks Café which is two blocks away in the opposite direction. Neither the food or the service here is any thing to write home about. You place and pick up your order at the counter. When I picked up my order today the tray was shoved at me and there was no "Thank-you". When I ask the girl at the counter who had a I hate my job/My Life/The world look on her face for some sauce to go with my meal since they don't have any on the table, she let out a big huff and rolled her eyes and acted all put out like I was bothering her as she slammed the bottle of sauce on my tray and turned and walked away. My daughter said she rolled her eyes and huffed at her too when she asked which unlabeled tea pitcher was sweet or unsweet. If it pains you that much to answer a simple question from a customer, then label the damn tea pitchers!! The barbeque was only slightly smoky and very dry. Slaw was the green mayo based slaw which I do not like, not the Eastern Carolina/Lexington red slaw. Hush puppies were over cooked to the point of almost being inedible. I took one bite and left the rest. The barbeque sauce was just plain nasty. I could tell by the taste, it was that Kraft bottled sauce thinned out with some apple cider vinegar and some extra red pepper added. After 2 visits here, I can't see how in the world anyone thinks the food here is good. There are much, much better places to eat barbeque than here. A regular combo- a sandwich, fries or pups and a drink was $6.90 with tax. Not worth it at all especially since I thew at least half of it in the trash. I will never eat here again. I'm not paying for below average food and for someone to huff and roll their eyes at me. If you hate customer service that much, then go get a job somewhere else. MOTHERS USE CAUTION!! Yesterday I met a friend and her three children at Little Pigs for dinner. After I arrived there with my three children we discussed in our cars side by side what we we're going to order. I sent my nine year old son in to get a menu. As he was walking out, there was a white mercedes pulling up. A man got out his car starring at us so evil. He asked what we were doing and she said excuse me? He asked again, and she replied, were about to eat. HE said no your not, your not eating here. He was reaching down in his car so I rushed my son into the car and we both sped off in our cars, heading towards Thornton Elementary. We pulled over to call the police, as my friend was on the phone. We heard a loud noise. It was the same man, except he was on a dirt bike. So we pulled out the drive way we we're in and he starting chasing us, causing us to wreck and caused me to run a red light. I flagged an officer down and he held us until they pulled the man over. Come to find out. It was the manager of Little Pigs. He lied to the police and said our children were out playing in the parking lot, which was a lie. The parking lot is right by the road so why would we have children age 3-9 (6kids) playing in a parking lot. He also advised a police he was going home, but another newton Po knew he wad lying because he seen him chasing us. Nothing was done after the danger he put us through and also harassing us. It really hurt my heart because I've heard negative things about the employees previously, but I never thought I would have had to experience what we went through. It's sad that our kids were shaking, crying and scared and nothing was done. I will never eat there and I dont recommend and single woman, nor african americans go alone.
