Hans is NOT Honest STAY AWAY this mechanic shop will fix everything but the problem. I have a 2013 VW Jetta . Replacing expensive parts that did not need fixed. I took it in for trouble shooting sticking breaks they replaced the master cylinder and brake booster and brake peddle when all it needed was new hoses for the brakes. They REFUSED to give my car back for TWO WEEKS. Gave it back with almost 300 more miles on it and 2 additional lights on. I've only put 600 miles in my car since I bought it. Charged a couple thousand dollars and were extremely condescending and rude to me. Returned with substantial interior wear and tear absolutely filthy. These horrible humans should NOT be in business. If you live in West Seattle and have a VW, Audi, Karma Gaia, etc. these guys should be your go to for general maintenance and repair. Not to bad to get in and work is done quickly. Knowledge. I have used them for run or the mill stuff like coolant flush all the way to complete dash and heater core tear down. Joe and Hans Jr. communicate well, have found other issues that they brought to my attention before they became problems, and have saved me $$ on alternative repairs and parts. My 2010 Jetta had the ABS warning light on. I took it to Han's and they said that they had to replace the right rear ABS wheel sensor. I agreed to them proceeding with the repair. They replaced the sensor for $800 and then called to tell me that it was not the problem. They said that they now needed to replace the ABS module which would be about $3,000. I decline their generous offer and will look to have it repaired elsewhere. read more

Hans replaced the compressor with a cheap, Chinese made unit that made a loud, whining sound and cooled intermittently. When I took it back, they told me the noise was from the alternator, which they replaced. The noise and was still present after this and I declined to take it back to Hans again. Two other shops were able to easily diagnose a bad compressor and I had it fixed elsewhere. Hans declined to refund any money but I did get my credit card company refund half of my payment and I filed a small claims action against them for the rest. I would avoid taking my car here for any service, there are many more honest shops in Seattle. read more

Needs to be Zero Took vw in for oil leak in 2022. After a supposedly rebuilt engine because mine was cracked. No invoice for rebuilt, no details on what was done to rebuilt and still leaking oil after 2 years and only 2000 miles. Finally took to another business for checklist of all the things wrong that Hans should have repaired. Requested again for copy of invoice with the new serial number. At home I'll try to find? That is against the law. Forgot to replace engine seal, loose heads, on and on. All this for $3500+ labor and parts charged for and not installed. I was on a road trip from CA all the way to Vancouver an oil light came on. I called them made an appointment and brought my car there. They are very knowledgeable with Audis and because they knew I was traveling back home they suggested me to replace the tires. They were concerned about my safety but they didn't force me to do anything, they just recommended me to replace the tires. I spent an extra day there and took my car to a tire place. but at the place they couldn't find my tire keys. (I didn't have any clue about it). I brought my car in for an oil change. My Audi's Instument Cluster is also 'toast' meaning none of the dials work, no mileage, speed, tach, water, check engine, gas etc. etc. It has been this way for a tad. We talked about this and I told them I had my Instument cluster rebuilt by two places and both failed so my money was reimbursed and the third place (in England...I have been researching this for over a year) knew once he looked at he could not fix it and only charged $50.00 and he paid shipping both ways since he had led me to believe he could fix it. Hans' called me later saying they had an idea and could do something no one else had done. He went on to explain about reading the electrical mapping (or something like that) as everything that didn't work was part of the same ground. Later he called again with some great discovery, sure he had it but would need the car the next day. He led me to believe he had a new answer and could fix it. The next day at 3:00 I called them. They could not fix and told me I had to send it to a specialist who they named. They told me the Instument Cluster had to be rebuilt as the part is obsolete; everything I had already told them. The person they told me to bring it to was one I told them had already tried...I guess he wasn't listening. In the end they charged me over $500.00 to tell me what I had told them when I dropped it off. This was outside of the $105.00 oil change charge. They then tried to get me to try Plan B. I agreed stating I wanted an estimate and contract of warranty/guarantee of their work. The reply was they would not guarantee their work. No Plan B for me. I am glad I met a few honest mechanics, but Hans' is NOT one of them. Charging me over $500.00 to tell me what I already had told them and sending me to someone I had told them I had tried. I am hoping for a call this week and reversal of this charge on my credit card or perhaps claim with the BBB may be in order. read more

I recently took my 2014 Jetta here for some minor repairs, new spark plugs, and a full 80k diagnostics check, and I was blown away impressed with the customer service, honesty, availability, and quality of work completed. You know how sometimes it feels like a tsunami of bad luck happens and things feel overwhelming? I hope your answer is "no" and life is treating you just right. BUT that has NOT been my story recently. One thing after another, then the engine lights started blinking and my not so old car made ALL the funny noises. Hans and company got my Tiguan in quickly and I heard from them by the afternoon....but with the worst news EVER....the engine had died. My car would drive no more. I had to ask if I could call back, because I couldn't hold back the sobs at this point. Poor souls on the other end of the line. Thing is, I could have been treated as just another customer, but the crew were so compassionate and so kind. I do wish this had a happier ending and I got to drive away, but I could tell they wished that for me, too. I want to pay that kindness forward. Please take your car here. Using Hans VW Repair will cost you money, grief, and time. We took our '09 VW Jetta Sportwagen in for basic maintenance and upkeep. What came back to us was an utter disaster. Immediately upon starting the car we got a heavy dose of fuel fumes in the cabin of the vehicle. We figured this might be normal and thought it'd burn off. Upon pulling out and going down the road we were no further than Roxbury when we started to notice that whenever we'd try to accelerate the car would slip and spin out. When we would attempt to brake, again, we would slip and fail to brake correctly. The next day we did a test drive and noticed the same behavior and that the fuel was dropping quick. We ran out of gas and coasted into a gas station. Upon popping the hood and inspecting the engine area while the car was running, we noticed that fuel was streaming heavily out of the fuel filter and subsequently draining to the ground, coating the passenger tires. We believe this is what was causing the braking and acceleration issues, the slipping and skidding. We contacted the owner who replied with a terse couple sentence email telling us to contact a tow company and arrange pick-up and drop-off, which we did. He never tried to call us that day or any day about the matter. We felt the owner was attempting to turn the situation around and at no time accepted blame, responsibility, nor showed remorse. No offer to compensate, even partially. Only the Lyft ride was offered. We were forced to call them. We again had to call them at which point they told us to take Lyft, get our car, and hung up on us while we were in mid-sentence. Hans Auto Car Repair wasn't a good experience for us. The owner's behavior is shocking as a former small business owner myself. You cannot depend on him for excellence nor professionalism; however, there is a bright spot and that is Joe. This place is great and I completely recommend having the service for your VW done here. I had my scheduled 80,000 mile work that needed to be done with the vehicle and I called around to the different shops and dealers they had the best pricing and from talking with them they were very knowledgeable. I had a bit of a time frame restriction and once I decided to bring my car to them they immediately started work on the vehicle prepping it to receive parts (I have never seen that before). Furthermore they were military friendly. The total cost was a few hundred less than was quoted by every other place I called. Through their inspection they found a few other issues and called me with pricing. Again I felt the pricing was fair. All said and done I got the car back in much better shape than I left it. They even gave the car a little wash cleaned off the caked on brake dust. I was very pleased with how the shop talked to, treated me and the work done was top notch as far as I am concerned. These people should be ashamed of themselves. My fiancee brought her TDI Beetle in here because she'd developed a fuel leak. Hans quoted her the ridiculous price of $1750 to fix the problem. Luckily, she was suspicious, and didn't take them up on their generous offer. Turns out, I was able to fix the problem myself, in my driveway, in one hour, at the total cost of $10 in parts $10 for the part plus one hour labor, does that mean that Hans VW charges $1740/hour for labor, or does it mean that they're lying crooks? I don't know, but that might be something you should ask them, if you're bringing your car in for service. read more

I've gone to Hans a couple of times now for random parts for my '79 bus. Nothing major, mostly interior/cosmetic pieces - and no problems, until today. I went in, looking for a window crank and a driver's side reflector. I can get both parts online, but they're relatively inexpensive, and the shipping would likely be as much as the parts - So I figured I'd swing by Hans'. Joe was the guy that helped me, and he had the window cranks on hand and said he could order the reflector for me, and that it would be there in a couple of hours. He went out to look at the bus to make sure we were getting the right part/color, etc. I paid for everything, and said I'd be back later in the afternoon. I returned, and my part was there. Or rather 'part' of my part. He only had the lens, not the mounting bracket or any hardware. I was like, 'where's the rest of it?' and he said that's it - that's all I asked for, so that's all he ordered. I told him no, that I was there when he looked up the part on his computer, he said, 'Amber lens, black base' and reminded him that he went out to look at the bus (with me) and the entire unit was not there, etc... He immediately started yelling, and said that he was 'only trying to help me' and asked if I wanted my 'damned money back' It went on from there, but suffice it to say that yes, I got my money back and will NEVER GO TO HANS AGAIN for either of my VWs, and would NEVER recommend them to even my worst enemy. This is the shop to go to for VW Bus, Vanagon, and Eurovan work! I drove by this place for years and always saw sweet camper vans parked out front, which looked promising. Finally got my own Eurovan Camper and this shop was recommended to me, and I am so thankful to have Hans as a resource now! Both Joe and Hans are, professional, communicative, and always a pleasure to work with. Their experience allows for quick diagnosis, access to parts no longer manufactured, and knowledge on rebuilding hard to source parts. In the short time I have owned the van, they have completed routine maintenance, oil change, and a few electrical repairs- fixed a power window, cruise control, horn, and windshield sprayers. They gave me the confidence this new to me van could conquer a 3k mile road trip without leaving me stranded, and it didn't! While maintaining these old and loved vans is not cheap, Hans provides excellent value with deep knowledge and experience. Highly recommend! read more

AVOID!!!! After $3000 in "repairs", the warning, stop engine light still comes on and stays on. They said "just top it off with water". Did that, still no resolve. They also broke the interior face plate and they told me "it is not our fault" and they will replace it, if they found a used one locally. They offered to put in a new one but it will be at my expense. I was bullied by the abrasive mechanic slash manager and feel terrible about spending my money there as well as question the quality of the repair. Don't let your mother, sister, wife, friend or enemy go to Hans, ever. PS. I sat on this review for a couple of months and waited for them to make good on the promise to replace the face plate, left multiple messages and still has not happened nor have I received a return phone call. I also took out and edited some very strong and unkind comments... they made me so very mad. Futhermore - his prices are right in the ballpark with the dealership, not that much better. Hans specializes in Volkswagen service and repair. Yes, there really is a Hans, and a Hans Jr. General service (oil changes, tune ups) are on par/slightly less than the dealership. I've gone in for a few oil changes, regular service and a couple of repairs. Each time I felt were fair in price and completed in a reasonable time frame. I'll be back and would recommend them. One funny thing though - that Hans is a clever marketer. I realized some time after my last oil change that my dealership license plate covers had been quietly replaced with Hans' plate frame. DO NOT GO TO HANS. They have terrible service and charge a lot of money. I could write a book on the issues I had with them, but suffice to say my car is worse off now then when I brought it in....and they charged me a lot to have it this way! My car is now smoking..and it wasn't at all when I brought it in. I had tie-rods replaced and my car was pulling to the right really badly when I picked it up. I took it to another shop and they said that the bolts holding the tie rod in place were never tightened! This could have been a serious incident. I wrote a formal complaint to the attorney general and copied them on the letter. I also put a complaint in with the BBB. I asked them for a full reimbursement (minus the parts) and they refused. You have been warned. If you value your car at all, stay away from Hans at all costs. trust me. read more

Hoping to take advantage of the extended warranty purchased at Carter/Subaru in Ballard, I took my '05 Jetta to the dealership to have the very jerky transmission diagnosed and treated. Instead, I was told there was no problem and charged $100. After a second visit to the dealership and then another to an independent mechanic - I was told the transmission was going out, but they couldn't predict when it would finally go. I had resigned myself to an inevitable transmission replacement. Luckily for me, I ran over a curb and happened to stop into Hans' to have him fix the plastic under the bumper. While he was fixing the car, he diagnosed the transmission as missing 3 out of 4 bolts and having a terrible leak. He fixed the bumper AND repaired the transmission. All for a very reasonable price. The car drives like a dream now! I will never take my car any where else. read more

Unsure what it would mean for my day, I consulted my handy-dandy manual. Diagnosis: Alternator/Generator/Belt. me: "Fuck". So, by now, obviously, I've got Hans on speed dial at this point after the last debacle. He directed me around my engine and advised me to bring it in. Since towing it in wasn't an option this time (financially), I drove it in. He offered me a used part and made it easier for me to get this taken care of. After almost six years of owning a 2003 VW Passat, we decided to try out a mechanic other than the super-convenient dealership shop we'd been taking it to. (I know, everyone says don't take it to the dealer, but they're so convenient and have great customer service, so I stuck around). Hans was a stupendous change of mechanics for us! The heater that our dealership crew told us would be $1600 to fix was $250 at Hans' joint. Then the rear brakes we needed - also a great job. He told me immediately to get new tires - and he doesn't sell tires. I got 'em, they make such a difference. Then my car had another issue which ended up being a vacuum problem - just $150. He's changed fuses and lightbulbs in my dash for free, and I swear when I pick it up (always same or next day) the car is washed and vacuumed. Hans Sr. works on the old VWs, and Hans Jr. works on the newer ones. They are both easy going, friendly, and great to work with. As long as I still own this Passat, I'm taking it to Hans. read more

I LOOOOVE Hans Volkswagen Repair! I have been taking my cranky 2004 Jetta to Hans for the past few years. I made the switch from University Volkswagen (dealership) to Hans after I caught University VW ripping me off through repair work that was unnecessary and sometimes not even done! I haven't turned back since. My first visit to Hans was a doozey.... The clutch needed to be replaced. Hans said no problem and tackled the repair quickly and efficiently. The repair cost hundreds less than what Carter Volkswagen (another Seattle area dealership) quoted me. A few years later and the clutch is still working as if it were a new car! Each time something goes wrong with my Jetta, I take it to Hans where it is fixed quickly and affordably. The shop is no-frills, but still clean and convenient. Hans Sr. and his son both work together with a team of mechanics to complete the repairs. I can tell they take their work seriously and value honesty. They tell me when work can wait until a later time, keep me informed throughout the repair of expenses and time frames and they've even done small repairs at no charge! I have read the negative reviews on Yelp about Hans. All I can say is that with an auto repair shop, there are going to be both good and bad experiences. However, all of my experiences with Hans have been stellar. My best advice, give them a try and see how things go.... I've turned to Hans time and time again...
