As a physician practicing in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 21 years I highly recommend Tobe Hanson who is a stellar muscle therapist. Not a physical therapist, as he uses a unique approach to healing strained muscles and tendons. 52 years old and an active tennis player for decades I recently developed tennis elbow which did not respond to conventional medical therapy; including strengthening, stretching, cortisone injections. So I was referred to Tobe by multiple local tennis players who've enjoyed relief from him in the past. When you enter his treatment room (which is located Clubsport Pleasanton, in the neuro- sport office) you will immediately be struck by signed testimonial photographs and jerseys from many professional sports stars. Let me warn you that acupressure and releasing trigger points by pinpoint deep tissue massage can be very uncomfortable for a few moments. But as you feel the tension subside it gives you instant feedback that his treatment is working. So if you are experiencing chronic muscle pain, I recommend without reservation that you visit Tobe Hanson. Tobe Hanson is a very knowledgeable and experienced therapist but there are a couple downsides. First the good. If you have very little self-awareness about your body and cannot really identify what issues you may be having, Tobe is great. He spends a good deal of time assessing mobility and strength in areas before beginning work (which is both good and bad depending on what kind of client you are). He will throw out a lot of anatomical and kinematic terms at you, which if you are unfamiliar with may be confusing. For me however he was essentially telling me things I already knew. The actual hands on work he does is very targeted and based in Accupressure, which I imagine is great if you have a very specific injury or problem. He also gives some corrective exercises and stretches (photocopied from a book he wrote I believe) with instructions to follow in order to help fix whatever issue you have. So essentially this ends up being a tissue work session with a little physical therapy thrown in. Downsides. It may be because I only went in for an initial evaluation, but the amount of assessment was too much for me, as I said before he told me things I already knew about myself (though it's something he probably needed to find out for himself). So the session I had amounted to about 15 minutes of assessment, maybe 10 minutes of actual manual work, and 5 minutes of "here's some exercises and how to do them" If his price ($90 per half hour for non club sport) was just for a half hour of straight tissue work, it might be worth it. Even then, not really. Because the work is so targeted, he can only address so much in the period of time you have. And because of the style of work, he spends a great deal of time on a single muscle. I would liken the work to beating a muscle into submission and loosening up. He essentially jabs a muscle repeatedly until it loosens. It's very intense work and if you are unaccustomed to deep tissue work might be too much to handle. Personally it was fine for me, just a little uncomfortable. Also, getting an appointment with him is ridiculous sometimes. I had to book mine a month in advance, evidently he is very popular. Now the biggest downside. Hygiene. Give what kind of work Tobe does, i'd expect him to take better care and precaution when it comes to say his nails. For my session, they were clearly not trimmed and despite all the work being done over the clothes, he actually pierced and broke skin in the area of my subscapularis and teres minor. This is a major issue for me, and given his reputation and price I would certainly expect better care. I had a hip that needed replacing but in the meantime this man kept me on my feet until I could find the correct insurance and Dr. He even got me in with his own Dr. in San Ramon which I am forever grateful. I am a member of the bay club gym which is also a amazing facility to work out at and have been looking past mr Hanson's office for about 6 months . I first went to Tobe about ten years ago. I had a debilitating back pain. I'm not a chronic back pain kind of guy, but this one totally threw me for a loop. Tobe was recommended by someone in the know. This man works miracles. Most telling was his evaluation of how the pain came about. He took the time to ask me what I did. At the time I was working for PeopleSoft, a software company in Pleasanton. "So you spend a lot of time in front of the computer?" Yes, I said. He asked me to describe how my office was set up and how I sat. Well, I said, my chair is here, my computer's in front of me, and my screen is over there. He nailed it immediately: To see my screen, I had to twist my torso to the right. That's okay if you're doing it once or twice a day, but I was doing it all day for six or eight years. Doing that screwed up my back. Tobe fixed it with some acupressure--yes, hurts--and gave me some exercises to do. And told me to face straight into the screen from then on. I did. Problem solved. I went to Tobe this week per instructions from my orthopedic surgeon and my personal trainer. I've been having back issues since I could remember and I've been straining my back off and on with my workouts. I was warned before that this could be painful. This isn't a massage. Tobe asked me some questions then started moving me around. Within five minutes he told me my left ankle was rolling in and it was throwing everything else off and that's where we would start. He loosened my muscles up to relieve some of the pain (which it totally did). He also brain ninja'ed me, he knew that the specific part of my foot was connected to the bladder and asked if I had issues with it in the past, which I did. Then asked about specific dreams I was having and my brain exploded. He explained that they were all connected. It was like a therapy session within a physical therapy session. I loved it. But note it is super painful when he is releasing your muscles, once he relaxes them it's amazing how they just stop hurting instantly. Tobe gave me some recommendations for a sole insert for my foot and gave me some stretches to use to help with the pain. I was sore the next day like he said I would be, but I can see a bit of a difference already. I've been to countless doctors, chiropractors, etc and none have ever mentioned my foot being the issue. This rating is long over due, however, in 2000 I suffered from upper back pain causing reduce mobility. I saw an orthopedic Dr. and only answer was medication. I took the recommendation Ralph Gracie to see Tobi about the pain in my back. I scheduled an appointment with Tobi a few days later as things got worse. At the appointment, within 10 minutes, Tobi had diagnosed the source of the pain, and was ready to administer therapy. Pressure was applied to both hip flexors through each side of the lower abdomen. After some pretty brutal massaging, he asked me to hop up and try touching my toes. To my surprise, full mobility was restored. He went on to demo some exercises to avoid a repeat and said that I likely do not need to return for a follow up. Just keep up the stretches and watch the hydration. I've never had a recurrence to this date. I can 100% endorse his skill and expertise. read more

Here's the deal on Tobe...if you are trying to defy age and still charge as hard as you did when you were in your 20's (oops...giveaway...I'm 47) his services have got to be on your speed dial. His clinic is out of Club Sport Pleasanton which is a super-plush gym and this guy must have 20 clients a day. He's a big, blond Swedish ex-bodybuilder whose walls are filled with signed pictures of Pro athletes that he's worked on. He does a form of accupressure that is very effective (and admittedly can be painful during these sessions). It's amazing how many times I've gone in there with a jacked up back, neck, shoulder, etc. from snowboarding/mtn biking/weight lifting and have experienced immediate relief by the time I've left. The cool thing is that he will give you printouts of stretches, exercises, etc. that can help you do stuff on your own to get better. He's really into Eastern medicine & is super-knowledgeable about health and fitness. I've referred him to a ton of family and friends. He's not cheap, and he's not easy to to get an appointment with, but if you have pains that conventional medicine/therapy/chiro/accupuncture etc. have not resolved, I would certainly recommend you check him out...especially if you're debating to have some type of surgery. 52 yr old very active male - developed serious knee pain last year on the medial part of the knee. Had to stop all cycling, most exercise - when it would flare up, which apparently could occur from just about anything, it was exceedingly painful and would take days to calm down. Went to months of physical therapy - no improvement. Went to an orthopedic surgeon, got an MRI, then arthroscopic surgery which was 100% unnecessary - no improvement. More PT - nada. Was getting quite depressed because I had already booked a trip to Africa to hike Kilimanjaro with some friends. Then heard about Tobe - got an apt. to see him, and he diagnosed it in about 10 minutes - I had developed a serious imbalance in my left upper leg/quad which was pulling my kneecap in a way that was affecting my femur and aggravating some nerves. He released it using acupressure, and I walked out of there feeling 90% better. Was able to go mountain biking the next day and was back to doing all activities immediately, including serious hiking. Just got back from Kilimanjaro (made the summit!) and there were no issues at all. Tobe gave me some exercises to prevent it from happening again too. I cannot recommend Tobe highly enough. read more
