I only review companies I have used repeatedly and have come to trust and respect. Hanson Overhead Garage Door is one in that special category. We recently needed a new motor; the old one had lived a long,full life. You'd think that would be easy, right...just swap out motors? As always, I called Hanson but they were so busy, they couldn't get here for a day or two and I needed fast action. So I tried another "highly-rated" company. That was a disaster from the start, with unbelievably incompetent installation and multiple visits before it was resolved. At the same time, I'd mentioned my complete satisfaction with Hanson to a neighbor. She had called them and, coincidentally, had them out just as our job finally finished. (She's delighted with them, BTW.) I dropped by her place to see the guy, thinking I'd know him. (We've had 4 of their techs out over the years.) It was Matt. When he wrapped up next door, he came over and--without my saying anything at all--checked out our installation and made a few salient comments. His competence just oozed out. We had an instant rapport. Then it got interesting. I mentioned the springs. I thought they might be a bit small for our double door. (Hanson had installed them 5 months earlier.) He looked, carefully thought about it, gently disagreed, we wrapped up and he left. Ten minutes later he's at our front door! "I called and talked to the boss about your springs. He said they'd really be fine but it'd be smarter to have bigger ones. They'll last longer." "I'm going to replace them now, under warranty, no charge. We just want you to be happy." I was blown away. Who does that???!!! That's why we love Hanson. All 4 of their guys who've come out over the years have been experienced, competent, fairly priced, and genuinely concerned for our satisfaction. Even their phone person stands out. You don't really think much about your garage door. You go in and out you park your car no big deal. Until it doesn't work! Last night when my wife got home as the garage door was closing we heard a loud boom. We couldn't figure it out and just kind of gave up thinking about it. Figuring would find out what fell later on. Well we found out this morning the noise we heard was the spring breaking. I thought no big deal we'll just unhook it and lift it up and we had no idea how heavy that thing was without the assistance of the spring. So I looked on Yelp and I called Hanson. At first it was quite obvious that I was talking to a very friendly call center; I'm betting they answer during their off hours. She was trying to work with me on the scheduling and ended up calling the owner to see whether we can have both the estimate and installation done at the same time. I talked to Adam the owner who is very friendly and gave me a very reasonable price. They were able to come out and were right on time. I also appreciated that I got text notification that he was going to come within a window, then a follow-up text saying he was on his way. Peter was the tech that helped me and he was very fast, very neat and friendly. He got that thing installed in no time. And the door seems much smoother than it used to be. He lubricated everything and double checked it. It was just a nice interaction for something that you don't want to have to do. Also it was nice; apparently I only had one spring on my door instead of two, so I was expecting a much higher price. Without seeing it I was quoted for what would have been two springs. This really impressed me because he never said it was based on spring count when I talked to him. So he could have charged me the $500 that he was estimating over the phone and I would have thought okay that's about what you said it was going to be ,but instead it was half of that! Anyway one of those things you don't want to have to do, but when you have to do it at least you want to be dealing with a nice company like this. I'm very happy with the results. read more

Seemed like a lot, so we called Hanson for an estimate. Mike came and just realigned the door sensors! My garage doors are 30 years old and weren't working right. Adam promptly came out and replaced the hardware on my double door and installed a new quiet belt-driven garage door opener. He took the old motor and re-installed it on the single garage door. Adam stayed late to get the job done. Unfortunately, I was still having problems with the double car door. Of course it worked without a hitch when Adam came out again. He asked me if I was troubleshooting around 4:00-4:30 and I said yes. He then informed me when the sun's at a certain angle, it blinds the safety sensor and causes the garage door to stop. This will happen for about a month at the same time of day. The repairmen were friendly, knowledgeable, flexible, thorough, easy to work with, and explained every step. We unfortunately had an accident with our garage door and needed a new one. I called Hanson's and they came by that same day to check it out and were able to get the door to open and close while we waited for the new door to arrive. The new door arrived in a week or 2 and they promptly installed it. About a week later we started having a wiring issue which was preventing the door from closing with our remote(this was unrelated to the door installation), they were gracious enough to come fix it for us free of charge. The spring on our garage door broke. I called Hanson Overhead Garage Door Service and was greeted by Theresa. She was understanding, funny and a breath of fresh air (I had called another company prior to this and was less than impressed). She asked if I had a date in mind for the repair, or if I just wanted the next available. I went with next available, and she was able to schedule me for the next day! My appointment was between 1pm and 3pm. On the day of the appointment, I got a call from Adam asking if he could come by any earlier. This was fine, and Adam arrived just after noon. He was easy to deal with and had my garage door up and running again within 30 minutes! Not only did he replace the broken spring, but also greased all of the door joints, tightened the chain on my opener and added a handle to the inside of the garage door to facilitate lifting in the event the opener fails. The price is reasonable but the service is below my expectation. The technician who installed the garage door did not want to start since the garage is not cleared adequately. I was not told to clear up 12 ft deep clear space. He reluctantly started after I told him I will cancel the job. I paid him $50 for the 30 min he has to wait for me to clear up the space. I have installed two garage doors with openers. I did not receive any instruction booklets. I have to call many times with multiple e mail to get the instruction booklet. I'll make this short and sweet - don't bother with this company. I had a single door garage that I was looking to have replaced. The technician came out to my house and quoted me $990 for the job. I did do some research prior to having them come out and give an estimate so I knew what to expect. When I told him that was way too high, the guy was pushing really hard saying things like "I will do it right now. ... this is the best deal you're going to find. ... and I'll throw in a keypad for $50 (it has a $70 value". I even went as far as to tell him that I could pay in cash if he would call Adam (the owner, I think) and get a more reasonable quote. Long story short, he called Adam and still quoted me $990. When I told him that I needed to "shop around" and get a few other estimates he said, "well, the next time that we come out we will have to charge a Service Fee so you should probably just have it done now to avoid that cost". I laughed. ...What a joke. I decided to go with Mark's Garage Doors (www.MarksGarageDoors.com) who did it in the same day and included everything - sensors, 2 openers, keypad, LiftMaster system, plus he programmed all of our cars and even lowered the garage door becuase he noticed that it was rubbing against our AC insallation. ... and he charged half of what these guys quoted... and did a great job. An update to our review 6 years ago. We are still very pleased with our garage door but it was time for a tune-up. The door was getting a little noisy and less smooth going up and down. I got a same day appointment, and even with communication problems (missed calls and wrong phone number) the owner and his folks still worked to get a technician out to handle my broken door before dark! I had a Craftsman garage door opener. Adam came out to look at it, told me the gears were striped and sold me on a new garage opener by Liftmaster. I immediately compared the Liftmaster to a new Craftsman that was on sale at Sears, BIG difference! However I am not handy, so I decided to go with Liftmaster I took him up on it because I had had an excellent experience with this company when they repaired a very old garage door and got it working, saving me a bundle. Adam installed the new opener charging me about $566 for the opener and outside keypad (installation included). When the keypad failed to work the next day, which was a holiday, he came out immediately to resolve the problem. His customer service was excellent. Hanson Overhead Garage Door Service (Adam & Josh) is awesome!! Three years ago Hanson came to our home and did a complete overhaul of our garage door. It was completely rebuilt with all new cables, bearings, springs, rollers and drums. This came with a 10 year parts warranty. Unfortunately, yesterday when I tried to open the garage door to get the morning paper I heard a snap and the garage door stopped. For some unknown reason one of the cables malfunctioned and broke. I was literally trapped inside my garage. The door would not open and was totally jammed closed. I called Hanson. I explained my situation to the receptionist. She was very polite, professional and genuinely seemed concerned about our dilemma. A little over an hour passed by when there was a knock at the door. I explained the situation to Adam. He and Josh inspected the door and determined the problem immediately. A defective cable had broken which caused the garage door to malfunction. Adam & Josh spent next hour and a half completely rebuilding the door and replacing all necessary components and cables. They also discovered a broken bottom bracket on our door and replaced it while they were here. The charge for this service was $50.00......TOTAL. All I can say is that Hanson Overhead Garage Door Service did a great job repairing our garage door. I can safely say that they stand behind their product 100%, and are a pleasure to deal with. read more

We called and they sent out a tech who would reset (same thing we were told to do previously) The door and it would fail within the day. He came out a 2nd time it happened again. Thought I was making the right choice supporting the local family business...I thought wrong. I was urged to purchase more than I needed by the owner, luckily I chose not to and was later told by the technician that the extra purchase would have been unnecessary. I'm glad somebody was honest with me. After a $1300 purchase of a new garage door, only six weeks after it was installed, I had an issue with it. The owner (Adam) didn't offer to come out and look at, he wanted to charge me a service fee right off the bat. I would understand if the door had been there for a while, but come on, it had only been six weeks since installation! I will give you the good, the bad and the ugly so depending on what you need they may be able to help you. The Good: 1. Our garage door has been malfunctioning and finally it got so off the track we couldn't even manually lift it. My car was stuck in the garage! We called first thing in the morning and a serviceman was out within 2 hours. 2. The technician was very friendly. He called prior to his arrival and gave me a 15 minute warning and then was right on time. He was there for about an hour and I got my hours worth. Other than just opening the door, he made some other small repairs. 3. The technician was professionally dressed and had a nice vehicle and had all the tools he needed. 4. When I called the owner Mark to ask questions he was very friendly! [See my ugly comments below.] The Bad: 1. There was a $55 "service call fee" and an hourly charge of $90 hr. This may be standard but I thought $145 was a little steep just to be able to manually get my car out of the garage. 2. Without asking the service technician covered the sticker of a prior repair company we had used. When I asked him about it he laughed and said "now you will have to use us." I understand they want to promote the biz but you should really ask before doing something like that. The Ugly: 1. As someone else posted I too had a huge (over) estimate given to me. We also called the company we had used in the past and there was a $200 difference in the estimates. Do your homework and ask questions! Thank goodness I did because I will now save $200. 2. I was also told that he would "throw in" the keypad. The company we are going to use (not this one that I am reviewing!) said that it was "included" and aren't acting like they are doing me a big favor. 3. When I called the owner Mark to ask questions he was very friendly! And believable! I asked him why he had to "throw in" a key pad when another company provided this as standard equipment. He explained to me that the supplier they use only gives them the opener and one remote. They have to pay for the second remote and key pad. I actually told him he should consider another source! If he is telling the truth and is really being nickeled and dimed, he is certainly passing it on to you. Otherwise he is ripping you off. read more
