This morning I called Don's garage door in Petaluma to estimate a repair. I called around 9:30 and before 11:00 the owner came and made the repair very quickly. He was courteous and very helpful. It was completely worth the cost. I am extremely happy with this repair. It actually worked better than it did before I accidently bumped into the door with my car. It had problems before with closing it and I lost the remote so I had to go into the garage to open and again to close it every time. My garage door spring broke, it would only open about 2 ft. I called Don's garage door company. They had a technician (Brian) there within 1 hour. Not being able to open the garage door to make the repair easier. I had a jeep and a truck camper shell in the garage right up next to the door. Brian worked around these obstacles being very careful not to damage anything. He did a fantastic job, installed new springs, the job was completed quickly and very professional. Very happy with the work done by Don's Garage Door Company. They replaced the springs on our garage door when they broke years ago and when the door suddenly stopped working yestereday we decided to call them again. Spoke to Tim when I called and he had Brian come out to our house within 20 minutes. He diagnosed the problem as a broken spring that had jammed the door and also caused damage to the motor from trying to work against the jammed door. We decide to replace both the motor and the springs. Brian had all of the necessary components in his truck and installed the new unit within a couple of hours. I had Don's Garage Door Co install a Chamberlain Lift-Master GDO Cam 2 on 1/12/23 and am very happy with their work. Jeff installed the unit from scratch in about 2 hours. For some reason the new motor did not work so the owner Tim came the next day and replaced it with another new motor and it worked fine. Both Jeff and Tim arrived on time and cleaned up afterwards. The cost was fair. They gave us 2 remotes and a key pad was installed outside on the garage door frame so the overhead garage door can be opened easily from outside the house with or without the remotes. Arranged to have Tim come and replace our old garage door opener, and was pleased they texted me and told me what time to expect Tim - he showed up on time. Explained the old opener had broken, and I wanted a much quieter opener. He said he would install a Liftmaster belt drive and I would be happy with how quiet it will be. I suggest anyone considering using this company think very hard before doing so unless you don't mind paying a premium, enjoy poor communication, poor customer service, and non-transparent pricing. I was told the bill would be about $1K over the phone and when I received the invoice it was for $1,825.00. I was supposed to receive a call first if the opener itself was bad and given an estimate to replace it, but that never happened. I was expecting a bill of $1K. No one called me for my approval of the opener replacement or even once the job had been completed. They also sent the invoice to my tenants instead of me, the owner. The bill was for $1,825.00 instead of the $1K I expected and the opener had been replaced without my approval for an additional $875.00. The original opener did in fact turn on and attempt to move the door so I do not even trust that it did in fact need replacing given the way this company chooses to do business. Their invoice does not separate parts from labor and the owner refused to do so saying that they just don't do things that way. I explained that I needed the parts and labor separated for rental home tax accounting purposes, but I was again told that their system doesn't allow for it and that they had never been asked for this in 40 years of doing business, which I find very difficult to believe. The owner did not apologize for no one following through and calling me first for the garage opener replacement. He did not offer to lower the invoice or break down the parts and labor on the invoice. He simply offered to send someone out to remove the opener if that's what I wanted and that was it. When a business refuses to be transparent about pricing, it automatically makes you wonder what they're trying to hide. After calling around I learned I could have had the same exact opener and spring system replaced for about $500 less by another company. This company does not want you to see how much labor you're being charged for hourly and/or what they're charging for the parts, because it's a high hourly rate and no doubt a hefty mark-up on parts. When I mentioned I needed a third remote I was told I could buy it cheaper from Amazon. So, my advice is to call around, source the garage door opener yourself and any other parts you need and can find from Amazon since many of the same units are available that these companies are installing/selling, then find a company who will give you their hourly rate and install it for you. You can easily save yourself $500 or more. read more
