Great concept, gracious hospitality but the food and flow still need seasoning. We were really excited to try Hapa Barkada, Filipino and Hawaiian fusion is a rare find anywhere, let alone in PDX. Bonus: they're open late (until 1 AM per Yelp). Since Google showed incorrect hours, we called ahead before making the drive across town from Happy Valley. Perks: -Free street parking after 7 PM and on holidays -Open late (a big plus in Portland) -Casual, trendy vibe Ordering was frustrating. The cell signal was terrible due to its half basement floor. The WiFi passcode wasn't posted, we had to leave our table to ask a staff for it, and even then, it didn't work for either of our phones. The intent of a digital-only ordering system clashed hard with the reality. I suggested they keep a few printed menus on hand as backup. Kiaha, the owner, was incredibly attentive and responsive. When she heard about the ordering issue, she came to our table, apologized sincerely, and took our order herself. She even comped a few items, which we truly appreciated. Food: Not quite there yet -The surprise winner was the Volcano Broccoli, flavorful with great texture. Would order again. -Steak Bites were overcooked. We weren't asked how we wanted them cooked. The sauce added a little flavor but didn't save the dish. -Fried Tofu Plate came with mac and cheese, green salad, and white rice. All three were underseasoned and forgettable. The tofu itself was oddly crunchy in a stale kind of way, and the vinegar dipping sauce didn't add much. -Mac and cheese lumpia sounded creative, but it just didn't land, bland and kind of "meh." -The 15-hour pulled pork bao had generous filling, but the pork lacked richness, flavor, and texture issues. The bao was served cold, which didn't help. -Mocktails (we tried both available ones: pineapple, lime, and something else) were okay but not memorable. Super cozy 4x6 feet single stall neutral restroom. The scent diffuser was cranked up way too high for such a tiny room, almost overwhelming. We came specifically for the pork belly, only to learn it's a weekend only item, a bummer, but not a dealbreaker. The ambiance is great!!! A dark decorative place underground. The staff was super friendly and made some amazing drinks and food. The bar and resturant are separate, which isnt a big deal since the place is so small. We went early on a saturday and there were only a few other people there. As we were enjoying our dinner more people started to fill the seats quickly. The online ordering system for the resturant wasent working properly so some items I had seen people post on yelp didn't appear on the online menu to order. The bartender suggested we actually go to the kitchen window and ask, and were glad we did. I wanted to try the poke bombs which weren't showing up on the menu, but sure enough they made them for us and they were good. The spot is sort of hidden so make sure you look for stairs that lead down to a small bar area. Idk why I thought it would be more restaurant-y but this was more of a bar setting. You order from QR codes at your table that corresponds to a number. Once you order, food is served after a bit. Drinks are only ordered at the bar unless you want water and that is self serve near the entrance. It gets pretty crowded as the evening progresses and people end up waiting to grab a table once others finish. I really enjoyed the poke and I liked the sauce of for the steak bites. I was hoping there were more Filipino type dishes which is why I wanted to go here but didn't look like anything was available. Overall, things were an okay experience. Service here was top notch, however, the food was very underwhelming. We ordered the broccoli which had a great crisp to it but way too much sauce that took away from the freshness of the vegetable. The kahlua pork was good but the bbq sauce was definitely necessary. I did like the 5 spice chicken and the jalapeno popper rolls were okay as well. Just very underwhelming all around and wish that there was some reprieve to all of the fried foods. Also, the mac salad... sigh. I have been here three times since they first opened and absolutely have loved every experience! They offer Filipino and Hawaiian dishes (some fusion some more "traditional"), but they are all delicious! Ordering is simple, although a phone is needed as it is through a QR code. Service is speedy and the food got to our table very quickly. There are two main seating areas - at the bar and in a larger seating area and because we went earlier, seating was fairly easy to find. Food wise, all of the food is super delicious. Our group particularly enjoyed the Pork Belly bites and the Poke Bombz. The Pork Belly is perfectly fried and juicy inside. Paired with the vinegar, it is the perfect combination of fat and acid. The Poke Bombz were also delicious. The tofu skin is slightly sweet, and stuffing the savory poke inside is an ingenious pairing! While there, make sure to order a drink at Below. Decided to venture to their soft opening. They were still working on some kinks when we came, but were quick to acknowledge them. Hapa Barkada is a fusion of Filipino, and Hawaiian flavors. The restaurant doesn't have physical menus. You'll have to use your phone to scan a QR code to see it. You also order from your phone, and pay prior. Drinks and liquor are from Below by Botanist. They give you a drink menu when you sit. You then order and pay for your drinks at the counter. Chef Melvin's take on favorites such as lumpia, twice cooked pork belly adobo, etc. is a wonderful rendition of Filipino cooking. You'll have to try (his mom's recipe) the lumpia. We didn't have any Hawaiian food at this visit. They were out of salmon for the poke nachos. The food is brought out to your table when it's cooked. They don't wait for all your food to be ready to bring it out. Which is a plus. Hapa Howie's used to be in the Tigard area before they relocated. Chef Kiaha's cooking is something I look forward to having more often with their coming together as Hapa Barkada. The restaurant is located in the Pearl district on SW Lovejoy. They are inside Below by Botanist. You'll have to go down some stairs to get in. I didn't notice if they had an elevator for wheelchair accessibility. Located inside Below by Botanist, this was my first stop for food after arriving in Portland. I had been watching their delicious offerings on their insta feed for months and could not wait. I dragged along a couple of friends and I think we ordered a good portion of the menu! Love that you just scan a QR code at your table and pay that way too and then magical food appears! We had the Mac-n-Cheese lumpia (top tier), tofu bites (yummy), tofu rice, chicken rice (my friend could not stop raving), and masubi (spam, fried chicken and tofu). Again my friends raved about their meaty versions. Wait! How could I forget the poke bites? Inari (tofu skin) filled with rice and topped with poke? Yes please. My only regret is that this spot is not actually in my city for me to eat at weekly. Location is down stairs and in a bar (so no kiddos). Parking is on the street. read more

This is a new and interesting concept but needs to be better communicated with first time guests. I came in on a Thursday evening with a friend and right away we were confused. No one greeted us or told us what to do. We went back and forth from the bar on the right side and small dining lounge on the left. There were no host/host stand so I went up to the bar to get the attention of a worker and they let me know that we seat ourselves over in the lounge area and scan the barcode to order food. If we wanted drinks we come to the bar. Unfortunately, it was packed and there were no tables available so we had to wait for people to leave. Luckily within a few minutes, a table left but it took awhile before someone bussed the table. Beware of which table you are scanning the barcode from bc that is how they know where to bring the food out to. You must pay and tip prior to getting your food. You must also get your own water by the bar. It's pretty much a self-service concept. Although service is little to none, food was amazing. I got the Mochiko Volcano Chicken with garlic rice. Our cafe at HP was featuring Hawaiian for lunch by "Hapa Barkada" today. They were serving a choice of Kalua Pork, Shoyu Chicken or Pork Adobo. I wanted to try their pork adobo pictured below. I wasn't sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised how moist and flavorful it was. I felt like I was back in the islands, eating a delicious plate lunch. I love the combination of rice, Mac salad and thin sliced cabbage with dressing. I just have one word to describe my experience, "onolicious!" Hapa Barkada is located inside Below by Botanist. After descending a flight of stairs into a dark subterranean establishment illuminated with the occasional colorful light, you find yourself in front of the bartenders. The decor is unique and interesting. This establishment is most definitely not ADA accessible. At first it was difficult for me to determine where the seating was in the dark and with the layout of the restaurant being what it was. There is bartop seating, a large booth, and many smaller tables that surround what could easily serve as a dance floor in an adjacent room which has several TVs and what looked like a DJ booth. Hapa Barkada utilizes a QR code based system that allows you to order and pay for your specific table all on your phone. Unfortunately, while this seems like a great idea there are several problems with this system. The first issue is that the QR codes get worn off the labels on the tables, and no longer scan. It's pointless to scan a different QR code, because they are specific to the table numbers; so you simply have to move to another table. The second issue is that, being underground, the cell phone reception is pretty awful. Ordering and paying require internet access. I believe they attempted to fix this issue by providing wifi, but the password isn't readily available unless you ask staff. The third issue is that the wifi doesn't actually work, or at least it didn't for me. This makes what would otherwise be a streamlined method of reducing staff and increasing the speed of service (and service WAS fast) overly inconvenient and frustrating for the customer. I had mixed opinions on the food. My friend got lumpia, island bbq bao, and a spam musubi. I got the poke bombs. The poke bombs were good. I would put them on par with what I would expect at a decent sushi restaurant. I also tried some of my friends bao, and was disappointed. The pork was delicious and tender, but the bao bun had been fried and in the process had soaked up oil like a sponge to the point where it dripped when I bit into it, and felt nauseated after eating it. The feedback I would offer Hapa Barkada is this; -Address the issues with the wi-fi, and consider putting information about the network name and password on the QR code tags on the table. -Also consider laminting the QR code labels so that they are protected from wear and tear. -The star of your island BBQ bao is most definitely the pork. There is no need to fry the bun, it takes away from the enjoyment of the dish. Overall, if they addressed these things I would go back and try some of the other items on their menu. read more

5 stars for food, service, and ambiance! I can't be effusive enough in my enthusiasm for the food here. Hearty, warm, and a perfect pairing with the drinks offered by Botanist. I love how they're continuously iterating their menu - developing and testing new menu items/options. Everything I've tried here has been delicious. From their mochiko chicken to spring rolls to adobo mac-chicken sandwich. The meat is prepped to perfection and delectably seasoned. This is the perfect place to spend a weekend evening with friends. There's seating at the bar and plenty of space in their dining room in the back if you're looking for a quieter environment to chat and hang out. As other reviews have stated, ordering happens via QR code, so do be prepared for paperless ordering/cardless payment. That being said, I'd still say the service, in regards to the people delivering the food to the table has always been warm and hospitable. Definitely check out Hapa Barkada and get a drink from Botanist to complete the experience while you're at it! read more

We had a bit of trouble ordering food on our phones because it was at the tail end of happy hour so we ended up having to go to the kitchen to order. This place sucks. Food was aight but not worth the price. My chicken was chewy and dry. The mac salad was good but only about half a scoop was given. The salad was lazy, pretty sure they just bought a mix from Safeway across the street, especially considering some of my leafs were brown and sad like the same salad mix I told myself I'd finish in my fridge right now. White rice. The service is what sucked the most. Staff was either rude, dumb or both. Came in and was asked if we are drinking or eating and we said eating and asked if we can go outside. They use a QR code to order food. They did not have any QR codes to order food outside. We had to walk back downstairs to get the QR codes. We ordered on the QR codes then in person asked them to put the mac salad(contains tuna) on the side for our vegetarian in the group. They did not put the mac salad on the side. We asked for teriyaki sauce and the guy asked how many we wanted so we said 4 then he said he can only give us 1. Why did he ask how many we wanted. He then never came back. We went downstairs again to ask for it and were told he would bring it. He never brought it. Also asked for soy sauce. Was given soy sauce and a different sauce. She did not know what the other sauce was. It was unagi sauce and honestly it saved the day, the unagi sauce which is probably more expensive than teriyaki sauce made the meal significantly better. As a Filipino that just moved here a few months ago, I've been trying to search for quality Filipino cuisine in the area. This place didn't disappoint! I forgot to take pictures because it was so damn good I couldn't wait! I took my fiancee out for a date night to Below by Botanist, and the venue was really awesome with the interior decorations with a dope floral vibe.
