Soooo I have been in search of some legit Hawaii food for about 6 months now. I stopped by yesterday, he was closed. But today, I had the time to swing by and fortunately he was open, but SOLD OUT. Fortunately, he had a few things left over. So I said yes to a mix plate. Nolan's Hawaii accent is still thick it made me feel like I was back home on the west side for a second (!!!!thank you!!!!) I met some people outside the food stand, a business man from Hawaii and some California people I mistaken were from Hawaii as well, lol. It was an awesome interaction, from the moment I got there I got greeted by strangers waiting for food, to going up to the window and asking "so what? No more nuttin left?" Nolan's response was "Nah I only get mochicko chicken and kalua, you likem?" Haha that was a definite yes! Won't miss out on home food esp if word of mouth was already out there. So I waited a few minutes for my food, and the box was heavy. Haha it felt like when you would eat at your aunty and uncles house and they pack you the party left overs. I opened my plate lunch and I was greeted by a huge portion of chicken, pork rice and Mac salad. And let me tell you, the Mac salad didn't have so much frills like what you would see in a Portland Hawaii food joint. It was sauced, and seasoned. PERFECT! No need for all the extra add ons. As I started eating, let me say that kalua pork was no joke so moist and easy to eat not even close to dried out. The chicken tasted nice and crispy with just enough marinate and fluff. WOW -- this food is AMAZING! My family and I literally ordered one of everything on the menu, and not a single dish disappointed. Everything was packed with flavor and tasted like true comfort food. I'd been craving lau lau and was near the Clackamas Mall when we found this gem. SO glad we did! The lau lau was incredible -- super tender, packed with meat, and full of that classic island flavor. My other two standouts were the mochiko chicken and the pastele stew... I honestly want to beg him for that stew recipe! Portions were generous, the service was great, and he even sold out shortly after we ordered -- so get there early! It's a food cart on 82nd with street and lot parking available. The reviews looked amazing so I needed to come by and try this place. The truck itself looked good with no noticeable issues. It shares a space with a Mexican food truck which also looked great. The gentleman who helped me was extremely friendly and chatted with me and my son a bit. We ordered the Pork Adobo and waited an appropriate amount of time before it was ready. The gentleman asked if my son liked chicken which I responded yes. He set my son up with the Chicken Mochiko and said he wouldn't have to share with me. Super nice and generous. Wow...where do I begin? Food was ONOLICIOUS! I was immediately transported back to the islands after my first bite! The owner/cook was friendly and chatted with us about Hawaii as he was preparing our food. He thought we were from the islands since we were asking questions about the Pastele Stew. Told him about our favorite place for Pastele Stew on Oahu. Now for the food... We ordered 2 mixed plates. One with Lau Lau and Kalua Pork. The other with Pastele Stew and Mochiko chicken. Portions are generous. The two combos fed 3 of us and we had leftovers for the following day. Hubby loved his Lau Lau. He said it was the bomb! I wouldn't know since he didn't share. Favorite Hawaiian plate food in town, hands down. PRO TIP: You've gotta follow his IG page though, his hours are wonky. So check his IG before you head out to make sure he is open. He closes when food runs out (it's a popular place, so it happens) and he closes when things come up with weather or personal life. That being said, more than worth it for the extra effort to get this food in your belly. His chicken is like crack and his Mac salad is our favorite. The portions are also huge. This place is some straight flames. I feel like it's hard to find good Hawaiian food in Portland. It can be hard to catch this place when they're open but just check their Instagram. The owner is super nice. We were lucky to come on a day that they had lau lau. It was delicious. Super juicy and packed with flavor. The mochiko chicken might be the best I've ever had. It was so crispy and I love the sauce that it comes with. I also really liked the Mac salad. It was different from what I'm used to with potato mixed in but super pleasant. Okay, if you're looking for truly 'ono and legit Hawaiian/Local food, IoIani's is the place to go. Many Portland area eateries claim to serve "Hawaiian BBQ" or "Hawaiian Plate Lunch" but most can't even cook the rice right. First and foremost, Iolani (Nolan) is a Braddah, and his food is 100% pure Hawai'i. His menu is all old school/local kine' food. You won't find any corn and vinegar in his Mac salad or any Chicken Katsu on his menu. This is not an L&L! This is aloha comfort food. The Patele Stew is better than any that I've had at places back home and reminds me of the kind you only come across at luau or family gatherings or when Tutu is in the kitchen. His Kalua Pig is perfectly smoky and salty and clearly not prepared the lazy way (pork butt, salt and liquid smoke in a slow cooker). It is also not super oily, like those places where they keep it in a pot, warming all day. Portions and price also pass the Kanaka test. My mixed plate ($11) was massive and fed me twice.
