Party Platter with 10 regular rolls and 2 special rolls
    Jen S.

This is a small, hole in the wall, takeout-only sushi place ran by a humble and friendly family. This is our go-to place when ordering sushi party platters as it's affordable yet delicious. The service is great - usually pickup orders take 30 minutes to 1 hour max (if they are packed with orders) In addition to its variety of sushi options, they also make steamed rice rolls in the morning. While some sushi rolls are a hit or miss, their spicy salmon, pink lady, and tuna sashimi rolls are must-tries. Highly recommended for quality sushi at great prices.

Saw this place on Yelp and decided to give it a try. Had no idea how close it was to my baby's pediatrician. We actually walked right passed it before I wanted to go there as it's very unassuming and gets lost in the Asian market shuffle. The place is small, but clean and when I arrived, there were 4 people waiting on food. I decided on a poke bowl (3 proteins and 3 vegetables - $13), a crispy rice pizza with choice of spicy kani/salmon/tuna and 2 pieces of salmon roe (ikura). I would start by saying that it was a great value for all that food - paid 28 and change for all the items. The poke bowl was such a good deal and the food and fish was fresh. I would have liked if the edamame was salted, but no real complaints. The eel was also really good. The crispy rice pizza was not what I was hoping for as I had something else in mind, but it was nicely covered with the spicy salmon I chose as well as avocado, tempura flakes and tobiko. The salmon roe sushi pieces were at a price from the olden days when all sushi was $1. At $1.50 I had to try it even if it wasn't going to be good. I did not prefer this "flavor", but it actually went well as a topping in my poke bowl and on top of the pizza so not a waste at all. I was pleasantly surprised and looking forward to trying more again soon! The people who worked there were super nice and in my sleepiness after the baby's doctor appointment, I actually paid an extra $10 for my food and the guy gave it back to me. I don't usually pay cash (maybe I should stop lol), but that act of kindness made my day. Even though some might not think it's a big deal, it was to me because in this day and age, it's rough out there. Even if the food wasn't good, I would be a fan - thankfully I did find something I like! Looking forward to coming back soon!

Amazing spot for sushi platters! Affordable and good for sharing. I do prefer the rolls more than the nigiri here as the rice ratio is a bit high, but worth it for some simple and easy sushi when you're craving.

Ordered one of there combos I believe it was around $48. My friend and I shared it and we were both honestly pretty stuffed afterwards . The playing was beautiful and they were able to give me the platter pretty quickly. As for the quality of the fish, it was really good especially for the price! Service was very efficient and I would definitely come again! Love this gem of a business

I enjoyed the sushi from this restaurant. The rolls were filling. The sashimi sampler was fresh and delicious. I would order from Happy Canteen again. You can say, I was a happy customer.

a tray of sushi and avocado
    Suki C.

I've noticed this shop when it first opened last year. First tried this place when my MIL ordered a tray with a variety of rolls and special rolls. I dont eat raw items so I can only speak about the cooked rolls. Honestly for the price, the quality of the sushi isn't bad. It does remind me of homemade sushi except maybe just a bit better. Their lunch special is pretty unbeatable if you ask me. Though not all rolls are GREAT, they suffice for what you're paying. Lunch specials are $9 for any three rolls and you can choose a salad or soup. I ordered lunch specials from them and we chose the salad option- to our surprise it was a kani salad! Thought that was a nice change! I think one of the biggest feedback I hear is that in their spicy salmon, they add those tempura crunch to it, so instead of more salmon, there's an inconsistent amount of salmon ration to the crunch which didn't appeal to my family members. When I walk by the shop, especially on weekends, I do notice they have a lot of foot traffic so happy that they're doing well! I think we will frequent this spot mainly for their lunch specials!

#2 Tray (with three pieces of sushi missing because I ate them)
    Karen L.

So, so happy this is at Ave U and will definitely be returning! Don't let the small exterior fool you -- the food is delicious and the prices are so reasonable. I called to ask about their sushi tray specials (there are so many of them on the menu pictures) to figure out what would be the best bang for my buck and they were so patient in explaining the various pieces of sushi in each tray. I landed on tray #2 which has spicy Kani rolls, shrimp tempura rolls, California rolls, etc and it came in a giant tray! They said it would be ready in 20 minutes but when we went after 15 minutes it was already packaged and ready for us! The total ended up being around $27 paying with card (excluding tip). I would definitely recommend coming here! The people are so friendly and patient, making the experience even better.

Avocado Smoothie and Ice Milk Tea
    Lisa C.

I came across this while browsing around on yelp so decided to try it. The pricing is not bad at all especially for the party platter. We got platter A, avocado smoothie and iced milk tea. The sushi had good ratio and look very pretty. A lot of places I've tried, it's either too much rice or not much ingredients. I feel like the ratio was pretty good! The milk tea is good, just how I like it. The smoothie was a bit thick but after letting it melt a bit, it taste better. More creamy and less icy. The place is kind of small if you want to sit in. I would definitely come back when my husband or I crave for sushi again!

    Kani Salad Miso Soup
    Irene L.

Small mom and pop spot with friendly service and food came out quick. They have sushi platters and lunch specials. For 2 rolls and salad or miso soup it is $9. For 3 rolls it is about $11 with tax. I got the salad and it was a poorly made kani salad. The cucumber was shredded and soggy and the imitation crab was drowned in this bland mayonnaise sauce! Go with the miso soup. This taste generic but way better than the kani salad. I rather have the garden salad with the ginger dressing that most Japanese restaurants have. The shrimp tempura and the salmon mango rolls were good. The rest of the rolls were not well made and fell apart and the rice need more vinegar seasoning. It does taste homemade. But the lunch special is descent.

While wandering through Bed-Stuy on a weekday evening, my husband and I decided to try out this new…read moresushi spot. It wasn't terrible--but I had a lot of mixed feelings. Food: 3/5 I'm a huge sushi fan, so I was excited when I saw a deluxe sashimi set on the menu. Unfortunately, it didn't quite hit the mark. The scallop was thinly sliced and lacked the rich texture I was hoping for. The salmon and other cuts were decent, but short and oddly shaped--chunky yet small, which made the whole presentation feel a bit off for something labeled deluxe. We also tried to branch out and ordered the short rib entree. For $21, it was shockingly small--definitely a single-person portion, not sharable. I added extra ikura to a salmon donburi bowl for $2, but it was barely a teaspoon's worth--just enough to say it was there. Oddly, the salmon slices in that bowl were thinner than the sashimi we had just eaten, and overall, it left me still hungry even after sharing a maki roll. Lastly, my husband ordered a green salad, which somehow took the entire meal service to arrive. When it finally came, it was just plain romaine, cucumbers, radish, and dressing. For a dinner that clocked in at over $150 (after tip), we definitely left underwhelmed. Service: 3/5 This part wasn't bad, just confusing. We were seated quickly, but the pacing of the meal was strange. Our seaweed salad and soups came out promptly, but the green salad came last, after the hot dishes and nearly after my husband finished eating. Also, a small thing--but when I'm paying $16 for four oysters, I want to know what kind they are. The menu just said "West Coast oysters," but our server couldn't tell us the variety or origin. Not a huge deal, but it added to a general lack of polish that didn't quite match the pricing. I don't think I'd return. For the price, there are better sushi options in Brooklyn with higher quality, better portions, and clearer service. Still, I appreciate new spots opening up in the neighborhood, and I'm always happy to try something new. Hopefully they refine the menu and service with time.

We started with the salmon belly carpaccio which I'd say isn't really a carpaccio because the salmon isn't sliced as thinly as you'd expect. But! I mention that just to set expectations. Nomenclature aside, it's an excellent appetizer. Served in a truffle and ponzu sauce, the salmon is lightly seared which yields two different textures to the fish. It practically melts in your mouth. Highly recommend this dish. For my entree I went with the trio don, which is 6 pieces of sashimi served over your choice of plain or sushi rice (sushi rice for me). The fish was fresh and flavorful. The portion was perfect for me. My boyfriend ordered a yellowtail roll and enjoyed that as well. We also shared a carafe of the cold house sake. I'd definitely come back and try more items on the menu. It's great for sharing and trying new dishes. The staff was friendly and attentive, and the prices were very reasonable.

Lots of people came in and out for takeout orders so that seems to be more of the target audience. Service was quick and polite, we were there until 9:30 and they definitely seemed ready for us to be out of there before the 10PM closing time. As for the specialty rolls, there were some pretty creative options - don't shy away from seemingly odd combinations because the flavors really do work well together. I appreciated the rice:fish ratio on all the rolls, the rice was a thin layer letting the flavor of the other ingredients really come through. The plain spicy tuna roll on the other hand was filled with spicy tuna mixed with something crunchy - maybe puffed rice? It seemed to be an unnecessary filler, I would have preferred just fish. I enjoyed the Lovers Dream and Golden Sunset roll the most. While I was debating it while ordering, in hindsight I would definitely get two rolls per person, maybe more if you're really hungry.
