I had a fun cousins' luncheon at this Japanese restaurant. I haven't been here in maybe 20 years. They still have an amazing menu for AYCE sushi, rolls, and appetizers. The staff is nice and the decor is cute. I recommend this place if you love Japanese food and are a huge eater. I normally walk by this place but i was extremely shocked on how good it is. I usually order from ginza and wanted to give this place a try, the spicy tuna is a bit different compared to other places, i think they skimp a bit but was good still. philadelphia roll didn't quite taste like smoked salmon, the crunchy scallop roll was decent and the shrimp tempura roll was fresh which was great! Their lunch menu is a different as most places have set combos but they just give a free soup or salad with a $10 or above order (so quite isn't a lunch special but not bad) read more

This is a wonderful place on Avenue U in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, that seems never to be filled with diners, but should be. My friends from the neighborhood, who go there often, don't understand why it's never crowded. Perhaps this gem is still yet to be discovered. The service is very competent and friendly. When I visited the restaurant just a few days ago with these friends, the chef, who's also the owner, even came out to talk with us a bit and advise us about the menu. The decor reflects Japanese style: minimalist, yet warm, calming, and comfortable. And the food is great! The sushi I had was fresh and tasty. Others in our party had chicken yakisoba, vegetable yakisoba, and beef teriyaki. All the dishes were delicious. This place is definitely worth a visit. read more

We are visiting from San Diego and decided to check this place out for lunch -- just a 3 block walk from where we are staying. The chicken teriyaki and yakisoba lunch options were delicious, filling and super-reasonable in price. We ordered the yakisoba with wild shrimp, which was excellent quality and cooked just right. My boyfriend and I love to get the lunch specials from here! They are affordable and delicious. He has so many favorite dishes here including the teriyaki chicken lunch special and the jake roll. The teriyaki chicken is delicious! Usually I'm not a fan of white meat chicken, but they make it so good and it's not dry at all! I also like to mix the sauce with white rice. I was craving some sushi on a Saturday night, so I decided to come to this Japanese restaurant. I started out with a sake bomb, which is beer mixed with sake. This was a cool concept. I was with my girlfriend and her friend, so we all ordered different things, so we could each try them. The beef teriyaki tasted great. The sauce used worked well. I ordered a few different sushi rolls. I must admit the sushi rolls were very fresh, even for late at night. My favorites were the shrimp tempura and lobster speciality. They were both worth the extra money, as they were excellent. Overall, I was very impressed with the food at this location and would come back to try other menu items out. read more

My grandparents who live in the area always order from here when we want to add sushi to one of our elaborate feasts. I've also dined-in on several occasions over the past years. It's a super casual no-frills sushi spot but the food is good and the fish is always fresh. Great sushi and service. They have a decent lunch and dinner specials I would usally get thier lunch special come with 2 rolls with a choice of soup or salad. In my opinion the salad is better. Wish they had more choices to choose from. I would recommend the goyza and Philadelphia roll. The edemame and rock shrimp tempura appetizers were good as well. I will continue coming here. read more

Osaka used to be my favorite sushi place before Omiya opened up down Avenue U (sorry Osaka, but Omiya holds the coveted key to my heart now). Not that Osaka's a bad place at all, but Omiya's got lower prices AND better food quality. At Osaka though, the sushi is definitely good. It's not one of the best places in Brooklyn, but it's a great spot for a good meal, they have a nice variety, a nice staff, and the prices are a steal compared to the wallet-killer places in Manhattan. I used to go to Osaka for years, and I still have their takeout menu in my kitchen. The only thing I was never thrilled about is that nobody ever seemed to fully understand my order over the phone (even though I speak in clear and enunciated English), but now I'm smart about it and ask them to read back my order before I agree to it. It's a good place to take groups or your family for dinner, but I'd recommend going earlier if you can since it can get a bit crowded late nights. read more

Where to begin? I grew up in Brooklyn. Tried sushi for the first time in Brooklyn back when I was 16 and making $4.75 an hour (when that was minimum wage) and ordered a random piece of negri off of the menu at a hibachi place and thought the ginger was smoked salmon oops. A few years later I tried Osaka and learned that sushi in maki form was good. I discovered the eel roll, the crunchy spicy tuna roll, etc. etc. And then I moved away from Brooklyn and hadn't stepped into Osaka for oh about ten years.... Today I live in Hawaii where fresh fish is plentiful and well lets just say even in the dives that serve sashimi, they wouldn't dream of serving some of the things I was served here today. My father who is not an adventurous sushi eater and I came here for lunch. He ordered three rolls a spicy tuna roll, a tempura fluke or flounder roll and a thai chicken roll, and I ordered the sashimi lunch special. We both decided on the salad versus miso soup to go with our meals. The salads were your typical ginger salad, iceberg lettuce, shredded carrot and cucumber. My father's rolls were about six pieces each and he advised that his tuna and tempura rolls were tasty and his chicken roll was bland, but really I will not fault the restaurant on this because anyone who orders chicken in a sushi roll deserves tasteless imho. Now onto my sashimi plate. It was nicely presented on a plate of shredded raddish, however the slices of fish were rather thick and not cut thin like most sashimi that I am used to. The sashimi plate came with salmon, tuna, two white fishes I was not able to identify and IMITATION CRAB MEAT. The two white fish and the salmon were also not the freshest in taste or best in flavor. I lived in Ohio for three years where I also ate sushi and sashimi on a regular basis so despite living in Hawaii now I know that I'm not just spoiled by the fresh fish I have access to at this time and this in particular was not a good meal. Thankfully I'm just visiting and don't have to look for another sushi place to find to make a regular place to eat, but I will NOT be going back here during this visit or any other in the future. read more

Let's be honest, there's no shortage of food choices out in Brooklyn. Anything you're in the mood for is a quick walk or Uber away. So if you're in the mood for a culture dish, then it better be good. "Osaka" was one I could be satisfied with. When I walked in with my entourage it was quiet. Two female waitresses sat us. They seemed nice, but not so talkative. It was fine I was with a rowdy group. We had the place to ourselves and it was nice. I actually enjoyed the surrounding quiet around us. The attention we received was amazing, I know it was only because we were alone, but two waitresses, come on. We ordered our meals and no surprise, they came out fast. Could this be enough to fill me? Well I was going to find out. I was definitely surprised about the amount you get. Eight California spring rolls for under five dollars! Normally you get about six at other places you go. But were they good? Yes, the were okay, but I'm not jumping out of my chair over them. I definitely liked them. I'm not a big fan of rice, but the vegetable rice were one I could get use too. After the bill came I thought I would go in debt because I had to be a gentleman and pay. But it was extremely reasonable. I would definitely go back and recommend this place to others. Just make sure you go when their empty for the two waitresses service. read more

Hidden gem in my area! I usually go to Kawaii for their all you can eat but I've always passed by here after work. I finally told my boyfriend and he said we should go. The area inside is more spacious than I would've thought when I see it from the outside. The waitress was also quick and courteous in seating us. The area is more intimate so it is perfect for a date. We ordered some appetizers and even their fatty tuna. Since I've fallen in love with Nobu's tuna, it can't surpass it here but it was still decent. I had their salmon teriyaki which I thought was great. We also had a kani salad and a spicy salmon roll. Their spicy salmon roll was one of the best I've ever tried so off you're a fan, definitely go and try it! Would definitely revisit. read more

First of all this place has excellent food, the problem lies with their service. For some reason delivery isn't always guaranteed, especially when their restaurant doesn't do dine-in service since the pandemic. Some days they do pick-up only, which is really annoying because for someone like me who has to get on a bus to get there to pick up the food. Or someone who has a disability and can't get out of their house. Or someone with COVID-19 isolating. This is really unacceptable, unprofessional, and not deserving of a delivery fee. When this place finally gets their act together I'll be a regular customer again, but for the time being I'd rather avoid this place. read more

Ok so here I am 3.5 years later, and like everything else, it turned on me. I got bad sushi. Yes I know they are proud of your A rating from the DOH, and that other people are eating the sushi (rolls, not sushi on rice) also, but that doesn't mean a thing on my g-dam plate. My filets were sliced incorrectly, which made for tough chewing and terrible presentation - added to the fact that the overly vinegared rice was half the lenth of the piece and too thick. The nori was double-wrapped against the tuna roll, which made for more tough chewing. The sinker however was the temperature of the fish which was not cool, and the sliminess of one piece in particular. After a few pieces, I gave up any hope and explained to the waiter how it was not edible - he flew into a quietly insulted rage. He took away my food- but a moment later came back with the bill and no apology. Yeap he charged me full price for the plate in which I ate 3 suspicious pieces. I flagged down our original waitress who grugingly took it off the bill. I've been going here for a long time now, and have never sent anything back. I've also eaten sushi enough times to know immediately "this doesn't taste right." That evening I was queasy all night, and the next morning sealed the deal. In the extremely rare times when I have either done, or noticed someone else do it, they are never questioned, made to feel embarassed, or made a fuss. They simply take it away and see about making it right. But that's today's way of life. Skimp just a bit on quality and see all customers as disposable, easily replaced with other customers at that table. Consider me out with the trash as well, then. read more

I love this place, the staff are quick and really nice. They're actually food (not sushi) is freaking amazing and comes out hot and steaming. DELICIOUS NEGA-MAKI, TO DIE FOR!!!! The place is always clean, always has an A rating. The only thing is that in the interior is a little dated. But i don't care, as long as its clean and the food is good. They have a large selections of rolls also, relatively inexpensive, and they love to help you get creative. They also have an all you can eat special if you are brave enough to face the challenge. Also reasonably priced at around $20. I did it once, but i didn't cause too much damage :P Great free delivery, and they're really quick.. My First Love when it comes to Sushi. FORGET the bloated price you pay for Sushi in Manhattan, it is well worth the train ride and time for a heaping, mound of fresh fish, and awesome slices of Sashimi in this end of Brooklyn. I am warning you, there is not much to come to this neighborhood for other than this Sushi place - OR - Brenna and Carr. Besides that, keep on going to the movie theatre on Knapp St. I have been enjoying this restaurant for several years now. The prices are awesome. The absolute best day to go there is Thursday - Fresh Fish Day. Although, I eat there regularly enough to not care what day I go, i just find that Thursday the White Tuna is perfect. There is an awesome dish called the Triple Sashimi Dinner: Tuna, White Tuna, Salmon, and Yellow Tail - 20 pieces for around $20 bucks.... yes I said triple and there are 4 kinds of fish... I dunno. They have an AWESOME seafood soup that is 7.95 and jam packed with huge shrimp, scallops, noodles, yummy, yummy mushrooms, and vegetables. There is also a seafood sald that is diced cucumber, avocado, with shrimp, oyster, and octopus with fish row on top. The Spider Roll folks - OMG - A HUGE big ass Soft shell crab roll, that is Fatty Fat! big! for 11.95 and it is the real deal, they fry it up, and you see the waitress bring it by to to the sushi chefs. They have awesome presntation. The service - for me - is great, then again they know me when i walk in, it is best to eat there early as it does get packed - a good sign, if you go after 8 there will eb a short wait. I do not recommend parties bigger than 4-5 people for quick seating. BTW awesome, AWESOME liquor store across the street, that has a SUPER knowledgable staff and great inventory. This block borders a high end neighborhood, so even though it looks sort of - eh.. we are still in NYC and quality lasts, bull*hit fades away and gets shuttered. read more

Everyone seems to like this place, and I suppose it's ok if you go to Osaka for a sit-down meal. My one experience with them left such a distaste in my mouth that I haven't been able to go back. My friends wanted pizza and decided to go next door to N&D. Not being in pizza mood, I decided sushi was what I wanted. I decided to do takeout from Osaka. Now sushi is one of those things that isn't made super fast but it's simple enough that it doesn't take super-long either. Three rolls should take about 10 minutes to make, give or take a few minutes. I ordered it thinking I'd meet my friends at the pizzaria and chow down with them. 10 minutes go by and nothing. 20 minutes go by and nothing. 30 minutes go by and nothing. Mind you, there was no crowd at all in the restaurant. Maybe 5 or 6 patrons. They did have a bunch of call in orders, but I was already in, standing right there. After 30 minutes, I asked where my sushi was. Of course, it was nowhere in sight. Another 10 minutes go by and still nothing. So I ask again. Finally after almost 50 minutes, I get my stupid damn sushi. For all that wait, I'd expect it to be served by little angels and taste like what I would request as my last meal on earth. No. It was just average tasting sushi. With all the sushi places around the area, I don't see why I should waste my money or time at this joke of a place. read more

I am so upset at the staff change here. The level of incompetence in absurd. My boyfriend and I sat down at 4 in the afternoon. There were two other tables with two persons also. SIX people in total in the restaurant. Every single thing we ordered was incorrect. I got my appetizer 25 minutes AFTER my meal arrived. And my meal arrived before my boyfriend even received his soup or before they decided to bring our drinks. I didn't even know who my server bc two different people were taking our orders and bringing us only portions of our meal. I asked four times for chopsticks. My boyfriend asked for teriyaki sauce, he got garlic sauce. I ordered Kobe beef appetizer, it was completely overdone and I didn't even get sauce (and of course as I said, it arrived almost a half hour after I got my meal). When I asked for the sauce to my kobe beef, the guy looked at me like I had four heads. He repeated the question "sauce?" three times before I said "Yea, the sauce that comes with Kobe beef appetizer" and he just walked away. He came back with the correct sauce but by then I was already too annoyed at the entire situation that there was no way he was going to salvage my meal. But that's okay because he didn't even try. The other person I identified as our partial server came back to ask if we needed anything else. We asked for the check. Took another ten minutes. This place had the best portions about 5 or 6 years ago. Since then, they've made them slightly smaller. Their specialty rolls are excellent (slightly smaller than before ...but also the price seems to have gone down a little bit). I've been coming to this place for quite some time and although I always try other sushi restaurants... something about the food here always keeps me coming back. One gripe I do have about this place is that whenever I order take out (which is all the time), they never included a napkin. Not once. But the quality of food is excellent and the price is great. I've paid much more for much worse sushi. And I've had my fair share of "bargain" sushi that never hits the taste buds. read more
