So for my last dinner In London, having not eaten any "English" food since arriving 3 days ago, I went for the obligatory fish and chips (we don't get this in Houston). One of my colleagues told me of a place close by our old office that was good, and I guess it was here since it is the only place close to Frying Pan Alley. When I arrived I saw that it was a "chippy" and smiled since I had never been in one before. I had an hour till closing so did not dawdle. Went whole hog for the large cod and chips with a side of mushy peas - gotta have at least one veg. For dessert I had the Spotted Dick with Custard. Even though they were fairly close to closing the food was hot, fresh and delicious. Good to see real chips and malt vinegar. Again, they don't use vinegar in the US. Ambience was rustic and nothing fancy and also nothing pretentious. Server was a friendly fellow so service was great. Not the cheapest at £29 but worth it, especially since I was eating cheaply for the past 3 suppers. Well recommended - two thumbs up. read more

Very simple, very dingy takeout spot. I got takeaway today and ordered the 2 piece chicken with chips for a mere $5 which was a bargain considering the massive portion size. They were nice enough but didn't really have an easy to ready menu. The chips were decent although I asked for vinegar and they didn't taste much like anything. The chicken was phenomenal - very flavorful and juicy. I picked it off the bone it was so good. It was a very big portion of food for five quid and I would absolutely recommend it for a cheap lunch but I'm not sure if it's the best food in the area. Would go back. read more

First place overseas that I had eight since I had landed in London. I have been wanting to try fish and chips for a very long time and I figured I might as well try it where they're from. I'll start off by saying that the ambience was pretty cool, it wasn't as busy and I really like the weather brake looked. It just sort of stood out because every building around it was all metal and this was the only building that I had seen clear and concise brickwork. The fish: I really enjoyed the food, the official was really good, and the batter was not too much. It was just enough to where there was a little bit of space between the breading in the fish, which I personally like that because if you wanted to, you could separate the fish from the breading and eat it separate. I know a lot of people in the states like to do that but they're chicken nuggets or their tenders so I figured I would let you know about that. The chips: I know that they called them ships over there but to us in the states the known as french fries, they were really good they weren't too soggy and they were just crispy enough. I'm not sure if that's just how they're supposed to be but I'm sure used to Moore crispier french fries over here in the states. But nonetheless it was really good. I will say I didn't get the mashed peas. I regret getting them because I tried them later on and they were really good. Just go ahead and get the whole platter and when it comes with. The food believe it or not, did not fill me up too much. I was still hungry after this, but then again, I had just flown for about 15 hours and this was the first thing I had ate. All in all, I recommend you go and check it out yourself but be sure to get the whole platter. And don't forget that in Europe, you might as well get a Coca-Cola because the water will cost you much more. read more

Didn't like it... The staff lady was nice. The fish and chips were extreeeemely bland. This was my very first stop after I dropped my bags at my hotel because I read positive reviews. I thought because they have carry out (take away) that it might be authentic. I don't know if it was but I struggled to force feed myself so that I didn't offend the staff but I took probably 3/4 to go (but didn't eat it). How awful to have a giant portion of food you don't want in front of you while a kind staff person waits to hear what you think. It didn't taste bad...it just had no taste. I almost went back to the US thinking poorly of fish and chips but luckily, I went to The Huntsman restaurant in Bath. Their fish and chips was so flavorful. In both restaurants I had haddock. Dinner here the other night. Was weird, as it seemed barely anyone was inside the place (it was about 8ish on a weeknight), but they were doing a big business with takeaway. Had the large cod and the cod special (with mushy peas). This was great fish - white, flaky, and perfectly crispy. For dessert, we had the sticky toffee pudding with custard. Oh, boy, that was good. My colleague would kill me if he read this review. This is his favorite chip spot in London. It just isn't my style of chips. It was too breaded and too greasy for me. Each to his own. The service was incredibly friendly. Most people were ordering take out. The space is full of Jack the Ripper history. They believe that the only real shred of evidence tied to Jack the Ripper was found at this location. You can see a copy of the letter and pictures on the all. The space is dingy but somewhat clean. I had the standard cod with chips. From what I remember the serving size was huge. The fish was fried to perfection in matzo meal. Jack the ripper's neighborhood. As we headed towards the restaurant we saw a large crowed, fearing it was for the restaurant. A couple things come to mind, either the restaurant was that good and that busy which is a double edged sword or it was for something else. It turned out it was a tour group with the guide describing details of history around the brick wall. It was late and the restaurant turned out to be empty, the latter fear of why it's empty. On their menu was known for grilled fish, but we came here for fish and chips which usually meant battered fish. So I opted down this path, battered cod and chips. The fish tasted fresh and the fries were of the larger variety which meant more potato in the middle. We also got some pickled onions which were a good compliment. We had just landed in London when we found this amazing Fish and Chips place. Let me tell you, the food was amazing! The wife had the Cod and Chips, and I had the Halibut and chips. The fish is not over fried and the Halibut was nice and flakey. The Cod was moist and fatty and not rubbery like some places we'd tried before. The portion was just perfect for the two of us. The nice Easter egg was the history behind the place. There are pictures and art from the Jack the Ripper times. Ask the staff about the history of the location and you'll be pleasantly surprised! I am actually giving it 3.5 stars for take away fish and chips. Happy Days specializes in fish and chips. They have good size dining area which is very simple or minimal yet clean. Right next door is their take away counter for those on the go like me on that day. Apparently in this place you have two choices of either medium of large portions for your f&c order. So because I was hungry as I always seem to be, I had the large cod and chips for £7.80. Well, the large serving is huge here but that is how I like it. The fish inside the batter is pretty fresh, somewhat true to the size that you see when you order but not a tad bland. I thought it could be better. Like I was insinuating earlier, the fish is not thickly battered so you don't feel cheated. As for the chips, its the usual fat sliced and soggy potatoes. My other gripe about Happy Days is the fact that they do not offer freshly made tartare sauce. I got the lowly and mediocre packet tartare sauce which cost me 10p per packet. PerhapsI am a sauce person and to me condiments especially the homemade once enhance the taste of the food. As for my verdict, f&c is good here. I would definitely go back here and suggest it to my friends and family but I hope they would have better tartare sauce. read more

This being my my first trip to London, so my first request was to try fish and chips, and it was good. As a New Yorker, I'm accustomed to the the fried fish meals I get from from the corner Chinese restaurant, but this English style was a new experience when the owner suggested vinegar and salt, and it was delicious. One of the best fish and chips shops in London, by far. The seating area can get a bit cramped, and take care as Thursday and Friday lunchtimes will see a queue out the door (the restaurant entrance is separate, so there's usually no waiting if you want to stay in for lunch). The fish and chips are excellent, with lovely crispy batter and tasty perfectly done chips. They offer cod, haddock, plaice, rockfish (among others) as well as (battered and unbattered) saveloy, gherkins and of course mushy peas. Dining in, the menus also have a full range of options, inlcuding grilled salmon, calamari, fish cakes, etc. It's a great little place, definitely one of the best! read more

My family of four (two kids ages 11 & 14) are staying in Shoreditch. Walked here yesterday and had the cod fish and chips (9£) and side ordered 2 orders of mashed peas (1.5£) each. You get one HUGE piece of beer battered fish and a giant serving of thick cut fries. We really should have ordered half the amount and shared. Everything was fantastic. Very nice waitress/hostess. We were thrilled to find this restaurant via Yelp. It was within easy walking distance of the Tower of London. Our family tried the skate, cod and haddock.
