We arrived in London and on our first night we decided to come to the Golden Hind. We ordered the fish and chips with haddock. The meal was spot on and did not disappoint at all. The service staff was nice and helpful. It was also a cozy interior and we were seated by the window. I highly recommend this place if you are in the area.
If you were in England and you're looking for some typical English food that contains marmite or treacle or toad in the hole or something unusual with the name like that, but it's actually regular food, but it has a weird name then you might want to try some spotted dick. Now I know what you're thinking, but it's not what you think. Spotted deck happens to be like a firm pudding with a sauce over the top of it and it was named after a guy in his dog. I believe I could be wrong, but it's a long tradition as well loved in Britain and so we had to try it like we had with other foods with weird names. It was delicious. My wife had to call around to find a place that actually sold it, but when she found it, they were very helpful and kind on the phone and extremely gracious when we got there. The menu and the restaurant were wonderful. It was a pleasure to walk into a well run business like this and it's a small intimate neighborhood with this café in it. We highly recommend it. Oh, by the way, she loved the spotted deck. We all did.
An amazing find in the midst of wandering the shopping streets of Baker St. to run into a genuinely flavorful and expertly executed version of the iconic F and C, and mushy peas that were wonderfully fresh tasting as if just-picked. A nice selection of non-alcoholic options crowned a wonderful lunch. Having the option of Plaice as well as haddock & cod is truly happiness in a menu here. While fish and chips can be as casual as the newspaper cone, here they become a dining experience to feel like a much appreciated break from the fast takeaway pace that it is usually associated with.
I came here to The Golden Hind a LOOOOONG time ago, but due to time constraints I ended up having to do takeaway. So this was really the first time that I was actually able to sit down and eat here. Ordered the large cod with a side of small chips (note, it is not very small). I don't know how they manage to fry the cod so well, but yet the batter is so thin and doesn't overpower the fish. The English know their fry ups. My only issue is that the fish and chips is almost too pure. It's not salted at all, so you have to add your own flavor to it. Definitely found myself layering salt on, using the malt vinegar, or dipping it in tartar sauce. Service was great, everyone was really friendly here and very welcoming. Glad I got to try The Golden Hind for real this time!

When you walk in you are greeted by multiple people to seat you. They pretty take your order and bring your food. The restaurant is small so you are sitting close to your neighbor but that is similar to many restaurants in London. The food was excellent. The fish specifically was extremely fresh. A nice white flaky fish with a light breading. The peas and fries were a good serving and if there was only one person they would be too much for 1. They were good for two. I would 100% return. It was a little expensive which is why it gets 4 stars instead of 5.
Lovely, local fish and chips restaurant with reservations and table service and a friendly efficient staff who'll get you in and out for a quick lunch of fried cod (or haddock as you choose), chips, and mushy peas. The owner is on the floor chatting with guests which is great. The inside is a bit tight but hey the place has been here for like 150 with only 5 owners along the way.

The location is in on a really cute, quaint street and the restaurant is clean and spacious. Our server was very friendly and handsome, see pic. Haha! The food was very fresh and cooked well. A great place for authentic British fish and chips! We highly recommend you come for the food (and server. ) Thank you, guys for a lovely lunch!
This place is tucked away by a few other popular restaurants so definitely try it out next time you're near- the fish is incredible. This isn't your regular chippy, this is fine dining fish and chips. (Though the chips are an extra cost which I thought was a little annoying but what can you do). The fish was spectacular. The service was really good as well, we were seated right away and they were able to serve us quickly as well. Not somewhere you'd go on a day to day basis as it's a little expensive but definitely a good spot for a date or bringing family.
If you are looking for the best fish and chips in London. This is the place. My friend took me here and apparently this place was used to be a hole in the wall. Nice inside of the restaurant is beautiful. It is so busy. The British people know where to get the best fish and chips. You need a reservation here. Very busy. My friends and I only ordered two fish and sides but we had to take some to go because it was soooooo big. The fish was very tasty. I don't know how they keep fish in one big size to fried. I had an amazing dinner. I want to give 5 stars but the servers were very busy and they were not easy to get any attentions. I hope they can improve the service or maybe I had a bad server. I had great dinner. I will try to get fish to go next time to bring back to the USA. There is NO fish and chips you can get in the states for this big.
Perfect crust on the haddock. Chips were not my style. I like them super crisp and these weren't. Pimms lemonade was delightful. Salad was vegetables, a rarity in England, so I shan't complain. A solid, low key restaurant but not as charming as I'd hoped for.
Steeped in history, this is an absolute must when you visit London! Had an awesome experience coming here during my last trip. Ordered a few items which included the Fried Haddock, Fried Cod, and Calamari. The Fried Haddock which was my favorite was battered perfectly - crispy exterior and soft savory inside. This was my first time trying Haddock and honestly it had a lot of flavor for a white fish. The Cod was also really good, again like the Haddock it was cooked exceptionally well. The chips that it came with were also abundant and cooked nicely. The Calamari that I ordered was also very delectable and had a lot of flavor. Service was great and the owner was courteous. He did a great job in explaining the history of the place and also did a great job in going to each table to provide excellent service to each customer. I would definitely come back again in the future when I come to London again.
The Golden Hind is an authentic British Fish & Chips restaurant that opened in London, England in 1914. It is located in the heart of London's Marylebone Village and was founded by an Italian immigrant named Mr. Esposito. He ran it through two world wars before selling the business to another Italian immigrant named Mr. Morri in 1947. It would be owned by a number of Italian and Greek immigrants over the years. Since 2002 it has been run by Anthony Christou, a Greek immigrant from Cyprus. Many have argued that the Golden Hind serve some of the best Fish & Chips in London, if not the best. Although the dish has long been associated with Great Britain, it actually has Jewish origins. In the 16th century, several Sephardic Jews fleeing the Spanish Inquisition emigrated from Portugal to England. They brought fried fish to the British Isles with them. The origin of Chips is up for debate; some believe they came from Belgium and were substituted for fish during hard times. Eventually, an Ashkenazi Jewish immigrant named Joseph Malin paired the two dishes together in the first ever "chippy"! 382 million portions of Fish & Chips are eaten in the U.K. every year. I ate at the Golden Hind in April 2018. My wife and I took a week-long sight-seeing trip to London on our April Break from teaching. My wife studied abroad in London for a semester and had eaten at the Golden Hind multiple times during her stay. On the first day of our trip, she said, "You NEED to try the BEST Fish & Chips in London!" Marylebone Village is a very charming section of London that is loaded with cool shops and restaurants. The Golden Hind prepares Fish & Chips from a variety of fish filets such as Salmon, Plaice or Skate. However, traditional Fish & Chips are made from Haddock or Cod. We decided to order one of each and share them. Holy moly!! My wife wasn't kidding! This was seriously the best Fish & Chips that I ever tasted. We decided to wash them down with some tasty local brews. I had an English Pale Ale made by Meantime Brewing and my wife had a hard cider by Curious Brewing. We look forward to our next trip to London; we'll definitely be stopping at the Golden Hind.
Dessert review only! Okay so we learned about the British food called Spotted Dick and honestly, the group leans more towards immature. Anyway, I was tasked to find a place that sold it so we could say we ate it. Not many places do! Well, thank you Reddit for telling us to come to The Golden Hind. I made reservations, which weren't needed. The restaurant is located in a populated area but wasn't busy. It's pretty plain and simple inside. There's seating both inside and outside. The service by the staff was friendly, fun, and efficient. For dessert, we got Spotted Dick, Sticky Toffee Pudding, and Apple Crumble. You have the option to get either custard or ice cream. So I tried the spotted dick and was not a fan. It honestly just tasted like a moist fruit cake with custard all over it. Sticky toffee pudding was sweet and delightful, wish we had more of this back home! The apple crumble was a balance between tart and slightly sweet all with a nice crumb. All were classic British desserts that were decent but not the best. The workers shared that The Golden Hind is known for their fish and chips. Desserts are decent here but maybe try them for what they're known for! Service is good. Located in Marylebone it was a fun spot to say we tried spotted dick. read more
I'm not sure if it was an online article or a recommendation I found on YouTube but I had noted this was the place to go for Fish and Chips. It was late evening and not many customers. The space is rather plain looking - nothing special. I ordered the Golden Hind Traditional Fish and Chips. The fish was good - crispy batter and a good portion size. Chips were average at best. Not being accustomed to mushy peas, I wasn't enjoying them much. Service was pretty minimal. They took my order, served the food, and provided the bill. No small talk, no smiles, purely functional. It was OK, but certainly no reason to return. read more
I wasn't into this place, it just seems a bit too stuffy. We made a reservation but strangely they put a bunch of us customers at tables huddled together, inches from each other, zero privacy, all at the far end of the restaurant. The large fish and chips were pretty good. It came with mushy peas and tartar sauce. Although, the fish portion was just a standard size. The sticky toffee pudding was a disappointment. When asked the server if it came with clotted cream, she said, "I don't know what that is!". Where do they get these people from. It came with ice cream or custard and we chose the latter, it tasted dry and awful. read more

We chose the Golden Hind based on the numerous positive review. Maybe our expectation was too high. We were completely underwhelmed by their fish and chips. We ordered the cod and the haddock just to compare (although our waitress told us they taste the same). They were flaky, but neither the cod nor the haddock had much flavor. The batter on the haddock was crispy but the batter on the cod was a bit soggy. Fish & Chips are a staple for anyone in London seeking a good meal. Though their prices can be exorbitant given its touristy association, The Golden Hind manages to keep prices reasonable and deliver on its promise of delicious fried fish. We came here after dropping by another establishment for breakfast but left unsatisfied. While we were only the second party after it opened, the restaurant quickly filled with locals and tourists alike. Sounds like this spot may have been featured in a guidebook or two! We started off with their Fried Calamari which ended up being six rings with not much else to rave about. It was simple and good but would pass on the next time. However, moving onto the actual fish and chips, we each got our own critter and decided to split the chips. THIS WAS THE BEST DECISION EVER. Our fish came out shortly after the appetizer and it was massive. For less than £10, you've got yourself a giant plate of food. One order of chips was enough for the two of us so please be aware if you decide to order individually. If you can't decide what fish to order, definitely go for the cod. Despite it looking a bit smaller, it's superior in taste and juiciness than the haddock option. They were both crispy and satisfying. The Golden Hind was a great experience. It did end up getting busy so service started lacking and we ended up paying at the front. However, for the price and quality, you can't go wrong with enjoying fish and chips here at their establishment. read more

Even though we had a long day, we still had to eat. Fish and Chips was on our list of things to eat while in London, and I found the Golden Hind that was about a 10 minute walk from our hotel. The place was in the middle of many popular eateries. Despite the cold evening, people didn't mind queuing up for these restaurants. Lucky there was a short line for the Golden Hind, and our wait was about 15 minutes. The specialty of the restaurant was fish and chips, and they were known for their generous serving. The Yelp reviews were spot on. Stephen and I could have shared a plate, and got a side of chips and mushy peas. The price was fair, and the food was good. I would come back again, and recommend to others. read more

My friend Christian and I were on the search for fish and chips in Westminster and we could not have happened upon a better spot. They have a short menu that specializes in fish (fried or grilled) and then sides. The fish is fresh, the batter is fresh, the chips are hand cut, everything is on point!! Founded in 1914 this is a place where you will be treated to one of Britain's finest contributions to world cuisine! read more

Fish & Chips is a must try while you're in London. Luckily my friend who lived in London is a foodie and had tried out every fish & chip place you could think of - & recommended that we go to The Golden Hind. Now this place doesn't open till like 6P or something like that, and there is usually a wait. Also, this place gets packed - super fast - probably because it's one of the most popular places to eat F&C. Mom & Pop shop vibe. I ordered that standard with a side of mushy peas which were pretty tasty! The bill was a bit large, but I learned that you pay a pretty penny for everything in London, so you really can't avoid something being expensive. Portion is pretty big too, very filling. Definitely check this place out next time you're in London! read more
Oh, it was good. So very good. Five-star fish and chips. Family-operated (with a plaque on the wall showing the history going back to 1914!!), the fish was fresh and yummy and flaky and light and delicious! My uncle has a thing about his food and his chips being extra hot, he always asks that the plate be hot (and if he's having chips, that they are extra hot) whenever he dines out. Sadly, this was overlooked by the waiter. A little while later, the owner came by and it was mentioned - he immediately brought us a fresh bowl of insanely hot chips. As mentioned elsewhere, this restaurant does not have a liquor or beer license (too much hassle, I am told), but they have no problem with BYOB and in fact are quite happy to return glasses to the pub on the corner. Bonus! This is a very small restaurant and they tend to not take reservations, so expect a wait. And expect that people may well be standing and waiting right next to your table while you're eating. read more
A massive fillet of perfectly battered haddock, some decent chips, and a whole mess of mushy peas for a mere £10 including tip? That's truly inspired. If not for the fact that my fish fry was already starting to lose its crispness by the time I finished it, I'd suggest that this is actually enough food for two meals. Then again, doggie bags aren't really the done thing here, and even mushier chips don't sound so appealing. For no frills and no nonsense British fried food, this is a fine find. I do wish it were slightly less convenient to my office; the temptation has me worried for my figure! read more
This place got great reviews on Yelp. And upon walking in (I had to be aggressive and push a guy out of the way with the door just to get in), I thought the restaurant had great promise. It was crowded and filled past fire marshal regulations (probably), but my friend and I got seated rather quickly. Service was great. People were nice. Though crowded to the point where my friend had to ask the table next to us to move their table over so she could get out to the bathroom, I didn't mind. I was just starving and wanted to get something into my body. Sure enough, the food came out promptly. I ordered the deep fried cod with chips. The cod was giant (about the size of half my arm) and fried to perfection. Though there's not much to complain about, there's also nothing too amazing about it. I guess I just realized from the meal that fried fish, is just fried fish to me. I wanted my fish n' chips experience in London, and I was definitely satisfied with the meal. However, nothing amazing to rave about. I guess a little more flavor in the batter would have been nice. Something like a little salt would have been nice. read more
I just wanted to try some fish and chips in U.K. and this place was really close to my hotel. It was pretty busy on a sat night but the service was still pretty good. I ordered small order of fish and chip to take away. Overall I didn't like it much. For some reason, the fish was a little fishy. Maybe it's way they cooked fish here? I'm really no expert on fish and chips, but my experience was generally positive. I arrived here on a rainy August afternoon with the restaurant being half-full. The atmosphere was very laid-back. The staff were very friendly and helpful in explaining things to us as well as the two Japanese girls at the table next to us. As for the food itself, it was decent. The cod was tender on the inside with a crunchy exterior. The chips were similar. It was certainly better than what I've had in Canada. We each ordered a small and it was very filling, and the bill came up to around 25 pounds with two Cokes, not bad when compared to the high prices usually associated with eating out in central London.
