I love Happy Paws. I run a monthly doggie Meetup and this is my favorite place for them. The staff is helpful and nice, the price is reasonable and the space the doggies play in is straight out of a storybook. The walls are painted and there are hug fake trees in the middle of the room - you feel like youre in a forest. My doggie loses her mind when she walks in here - SHE LOVES IT. There are a ton of doggie daycares and indoor play spaces in the city - and this is by far the best. Stay away from Animal Haven - they are MEAN and the place is dirty. read more

I have been going to Happy Paws now for over a year. I travel from Queens to bring my baby to get groomed by his favorite groomer Lydia. For about six years my dog would get groomed by Lydia in Queens. When I found out Lydia was going to only be in the city, it was a must that we followed her wherever she was going to be. My cockapoo absolutely loves her and so do I. It's so important to me that he is in good hands at all times and I don't think twice when leaving him with her. Whenever she greets us, it's always with a big smile and she really seems genuinely happy to see us both, which makes my hour (sometimes more) long trip back and forth to go see her, worth every minute. As far as his haircuts, we always get compliments on how great he looks, especially his little Mohawk. I would follow her anywhere. Thank you Lydia for keeping Roan so fluffy and clean. read more

I am writing my (first) Yelp review in order to dispel concerns about Happy Paws. I was a bit skeptical about taking my two senior Pomeranians to the groomers because of the mixed reviews on Yelp, but decided to go for it due to convenience. The staff was friendly and courteous throughout the whole process, from booking my appointment to dropping off/picking up my dogs. I showed the groomer, Erika, a photo of the haircuts I wanted and she totally got it spot-on. When I picked up my two dogs 3 hours later, they came back happy as clams with their tails wagging, so I know they were handled with care. I checked my dogs' paws and private areas to make sure there were no cuts or nicks, and was relieved to find no such injuries. The only reason why I gave it 4 stars is because the Yelp coupon I purchased only covers the cost of one dog, rather than the total cost, so I was not able to redeem the full coupon value. As the other reviewers mentioned, the coupon does not cover taxes either, so I ended up paying more out of pocket than I expected. Other than that, I believe the service and staff are great. I would highly recommend Happy Paws to others and would gladly come back! read more

The short: Really poor customer service. Don't go here, go somewhere else. The Long: You'd think people that work with dogs all day would be more personable and caring, but I found them cold and unwelcoming when I tried to bring my dog in twice for daycare. He's a new rescue, and the first time I was turned away, being told to get more paper work from my vet (which I already had with me in the first place, they just misread) only to bring him back again this morning to waste another hour filling out all this paper work just to find out they don't allow new rescues til after three months (I've had him now for two months and he is in perfect health) When I expressed my disappointment they then asked me to wait for the manager for another 10 minutes to get the final word on the situation, the manager didn't even come out himself to talk to me. Instead they sent the same d-bag with no customer service skills. (I dealt with him on both occasions and he rudely turned me away twice) I don't know how he works with dogs or people. I definitely like Happy Paws better than some of the major pet stores. They have a wide variety of merchandise that is different and more stylish than what you see at Petco etc. There are some smart dog lovers there, but as with all retail stores in this city there are some people who work there who are less knowledgeable than others. If at first you don't succeed with one attendee ask someone else. The one thing I would not recommend is their Dog Obedience classes. The teacher, Saul, is not a positive reinforcement trainer. He convinced us that it was good to be rough on the dogs to train for sit (collar yank) and housebreaking (he literally said "freak out like a crazy person" ) and some of our actions backfired and caused us to have a very skittish pup. We had to hire a trainer to re-train our pooch and he is doing much better. That said, I like everything about Happy Paws except their training program. read more

This place really is the worst. I brought my dog here for day care, and he got bit with puncture in his neck then part of his ear the second time. He doesn't have any issues as dog parks or at Woof n' Whiskers in Brooklyn, or the Pet Smart around the corner on broadway. One day One day I walked down the back street to look in on the dogs and saw one of their employees watching the dogs on his cell phone texting not paying attention to the dogs. I went to speak to the manager a week later, and he didn't believe me that his employees would be on their phones while they were working. I told him to turn around and look at his employee on his cell phone texting as we were talking. I knew he was texting b/c the iPhone text app was open, and i saw the bubbles. He went to look at the employees phone, but the employee refused to show it to him, for obvious reasons. I don't trust these people, and i don't think you should either. It's one thing to operate a business with low standards, but when you put animals lives in harms way because of it- you don't deserve my business or anyone else's. Also, my vet has also hear dog other normal good healthy dogs being attacked and bit while under the watch of their employees. read more

My original post was removed, nevertheless I'll take the time to write another one. I am/was a regular at Happy Paws I never had a complaint about the groomer. The Groomer that use to take care of my babies was amazing. Erika was always so helpful and knew exactly how I wanted them to look. She was very patient and what mattered the most was that my puppies loved her too - FYI - They don't really like anyone which made me kind of relieved that they were fond of her. *I recently contacted Happy Paws and received news that Erika is no longer there.* I was offered to schedule with someone else... unfortunately the last time I was there left a sour taste in my mouth. It was December, My husband and I got there at our appointment time and was informed by the front desk that they had NO HOT WATER since they opened and if I still wanted my pups groomed it would be in ICE Cold water ... Are you serious? How would that be my only option? I said "NO WAY" of course my husband was upset because we came from Queens and wasn't even notified about their situation. When asked why didn't we receive a phone call she said they were calling the afternoon appointments. I think would've been nice to notify the customers that were scheduled in the AM as well (Maybe :-\) Management basically wash their hands and asked if I wanted to reschedule. If It wasn't for Erika I would've left long ago but if they can treat customers like this then I can see why she left. *****5 Stars for Erika ~ Excellent Groomer and Professional at all times. For Grooming...Happy Paws made our little dachshund look amazing today. He was a showstopper. We will always bring him here for his grooming and hygienic needs. Service was great. I just wanted everyone to be aware of an extremely unpleasant experience I had at this store. At around 6 pm on a Tuesday, I stopped by to pick up a few items after work. I was on my telephone (admittedly, not terribly polite customer etiquette) with my mother. It was her birthday, I was running late to get my dog from daycare, and I was trying to multitask. As I was selecting an item off a shelf, a man in a Happy Paws uniform walked up to me and aggressively snatched the items out of my hands. I asked him to stop, and he proceeded to wander around the store ignoring me and obnoxiously laughing. I was forced to hang up on my mother and had to physically block him and demand my items back before he gave them back. At no time was I offered assistance by any other employee. At this point, I was furious and considered leaving the store without purchasing anything, but was running late and needed supplies to feed my dog. While I was waiting in line for the cash register, I overheard the same presumed employee harassing another visibly distressed customer about her recently deceased dog. Upon payment I was approached by the man who had accosted me while shopping and gleefully informed that he was a comedian and a participant in a television contest. Two production assistants approached me with release forms and were startled when I refused to sign them. I informed by a legitimate employee how annoyed I was, and she shrugged it off with a mumbled apology. I've rarely been so offended while shopping. It is entirely inappropriate for a business to force this sort of tactless, banal interference upon its customers. I feel assaulted by their company's poor judgement and sad that it got in the way of wishing my mom a happy birthday. Additionally, I was not handed a receipt of purchase, so that now--after I have mulled on how disappointed I am with the store's service-- I'm unable to return my items in protest. I used to consider the store an asset to the neighborhood, but will not be shopping their again. read more

I always like going in to pet stores so I did just that when I came across this store while in the neighborhood. Place looks nice and clean, alot stuff to choose from for your pet supplies but a little pricier compared to petco. I bought two harnesses for my bulldog and pug and the salesperson who helped me was really nice. I saw plenty of happy dogs playing while being watched and cared for by the Happy Paws staff. I would love to to try their boarding and grooming services next time only if it wasn't too far from where I live. read more

I've had nothing but great experiences here. My 4.5 pound Maltese has stayed there many times. He has always come back clean and happy. He runs to the door wagging his tail every time I drop him off. I have boarded my dog here a number of times, and while I am never happy about leaving her behind this place gives me some peace of mind. The staff is friendly and seems to genuinely like dogs. The facility is clean and there are large windows to the street, which I think help keeps them honest. Best of all is the webcam, which allows you to log on and check on on your pup from anywhere in the world. The dogs are kenneled at night but there are 3 large play rooms (divided by dog size) where they can hang out during the day, kind of like puppy prison. The prices are kind of high, but this is not an area where I want to bargain shop. Free grooming with an extended stay; she comes back clean and shiny, never perfumed. read more

I was reluctant to try Happy Paws after a friend told me they returned his dog with three bloody nails after a simple nail trim, but the reviews on the site were raving and my normally angelic chihuahua has the strength and determination of a rottweiller when I trim his nails myself. I was pleased with the overall look of the place, the dogs in day care seemed to be very well-supervised and having a rip-roaring time. I was disappointed about a few things: My dog is not groomed in front of me, he's taken away and returned post-procedure. To HP's credit he seemed in good spirits but a treat would have done that after any ordeal. The price for a nail trim? $14. That seems extravagant. The so-called amazing variety of merchandise is a bit over-reported. While they did have a few clever t-shirts, the necks were all extremely small, and none of their merchandise is of luxury level. Its more of your edgy, "my-dog-has-an-attitude-just-as-ill-mannered-as-mine kind of fair, which may suit some, but I think might dissappoint the more discerning dog owner. Though I have not boarded my dog with Happy Paws, I think many will be pleased with the webcam setup and the apparent supervision, I think I would be comfortable that my dog was in safe hands. I tried to get my dog in for daycare and called before hand to make sure I had all the paperwork needed but when I got there I was told I needed something else and they wouldn't board him. Grooming Services are TERRIBLE and totally overpriced. My dog's foot was cut after grooming and of course I was NEVER told about it. When I called to complain they played dumb and acted concerned. I wouldn't go here again. They are also very rude on the phone and often keep you on hold for minutes at a time. I love around the corner but will gladly travel to the New York School of Dog Grooming on 2nd ave for a groom that is much more accurate and 1/2 the price. These people are typical SOHO scam artists. I normally don't write reviews however, I was really impressed with their customer service. I was interested in their boarding and daycare services so I called yesterday. The young lady I spoke with (Amanda) was very information and answered all my questions . When I asked if I could see the establishment I was told ok and even given the best times to stop by. So I did today. As impressed as I was by their customer service via the phone , I was by their in store service. I was greeted by the cashier and young lady (didn't catch her name) . I was walked around and shown the facility and shown the daycare rooms. She also answered my questions. When asked about the boarding facility she mentioned it was feeding time for the little dogs so wasn't sure I would be able to see them. She went to check and then got a gentleman by the name of Quincy . I was super impressed by this since most places won't even bother going an extra inch... Quincy walked me around. Showed me the boarding and he too answered my questions. The establishment was super clean (and there were plenty of dogs) and there was no "dog" smell. I've been to several doggie daycares and this one really impressed me! I hope my dogs will be as happy to visit as I was. read more

I've been taking my dog to Happy Paws for daycare and boarding for about 7 months now, and we love it. Here's the rundown of my experience there. General: -- All dogs are temperament tested before they are admitted for daycare or boarding. If the dog doesn't pass, it can't come in for either one. As a result, I've never had a problem with fights or dog bullies. -- The staff is fantastically nice, and it's obvious that they love animals and really are concerned about each individual dog that comes in. The people both at the front desk and in the playrooms knew my name and whose owner I was inside of a week. -- Although there isn't a vet on staff, the more senior employees clearly know a lot about doggy health. I've come in with questions and had them answered immediately at Happy Paws, then waited a week to get a vet appointment, only to get the same answer. -- Every so often, they run "meetups" in the Happy Paws space, which range from charity fairs (to benefit rescue pups) with free samples and raffles to wine and cheese parties for owners of particular breeds. Dogs are invited to all of these events. There are also cute special events for holidays. For example, you could pay $5 (which went to a rescue) to get pictures of your dog with Santa around Christmas. -- There is an option to sign up for a platinum membership (I think that's what it's called), which costs something like $200. This gets you discounts on daycare, boarding, grooming, the boutique, and you can prepay for bulk amounts of daycare or boarding (which comes with an additional discount). You don't have to get a membership, but if you plan on bringing your dog in every day, do this -- it has saved me a ton of money. Daycare: -- The dogs are put into one of three rooms, which are roughly divided by size, but if you have a timid St. Bernard or a rough-housing beagle, you can ask to have your dog moved up or down a room size. -- There are two metal grated doors going into each playroom, which is great when there are a lot of dogs in the room; the new guy comes through the first door, all the other dogs run over and sniff through the bars, and then when the other dogs have calmed down and lost interest, the staff lets the new dog through the second door into the room. -- No leashes or collars allowed in the playroom, which is great, so the dogs don't get tangled together. -- Dogs do not get walked during the day. For dogs that will not go inside, but the front desk staff can recommend a reasonably-priced dog walker if you're really concerned. Despite the indoor restroom, the facilities are very clean, since someone cleans up as soon as a dog goes. -- There is a webcam that you can watch your dog playing on. Unfortunately, such things are blocked by my work computer, but I'm sure it's nice to be able to check in. -- Happy Paws does run a pickup/dropoff service for an additional charge. Downside: I've never used it, since you can't leave a key and have your dog brought into your apartment (which, it seems to me, is the point of a dropoff!) Boarding: -- I haven't traveled much since my dog started here, so I haven't had much experience with the boarding. When he does sleep there, though, he stays in a kennel with a blanket from home. Although I don't think there are webcams in the sleeping area and I've never personally seen him sleep there, he walks down the stairs to the kennel area very happily, so I assume it must be fine. -- If you bring food from home, they'll feed your dog that. Otherwise they feed everyone a standard brand name food. No extra charge for using their food. -- Again, no outside walks, so this is probably not the place for your dog if it won't go inside. Grooming: -- My dog is short-haired, so I can't comment on anything beyond a bath and nail clip. Comes home very clean, smelling nice, and not at all dried out (he has sensitive skin). Shop: -- Everything in the boutique is very cute and high quality. I've definitely suckered myself into buying a new leash or chewie while waiting for my dog to be brought out of the playroom. -- Not the place for stocking up when you get a new puppy - they definitely don't have the range that a PetSmart or PetCo does. That being said, they do have a lot of specialty items that I've never seen at the big chains (doggy snowboots come to mind). I have had nothing but good experiences here. Here's my Happy Paws horror story: My sister is keeping my Yorkie for a few days, and against my better judgment I let book a grooming appointment here this weekend. And we both feel like fools for not checking the reviews on here first, as this doesn't look like an isolated incident. She was texting me with anticipation on her way there and then I got a frantic call saying they completely jacked his haircut and ignored the instructions they were given. My jaw dropped when I saw the pics. I've had him for 3 years, and while he's occasionally had a mediocre grooming, this was on a different level. The instructions were to keep his hair to an inch. Instead, they SHAVED HIM DOWN. His ears are shaved down so he looks like a rat. No groomer is dumb enough to groom a yorkie in this manner, except at Happy Paws. The before and after pics are pretty shocking. Most disturbingly, they were told specifically not to cut his whiskers - and they did so anyway. That is animal cruelty, plain and simple. Whiskers are important sense organs for dogs. Moreover, it's winter in new york and now my dog is going to be freezing b/c his hair is shaved down. Now admittedly, his hair had gotten matted before this grooming. Most groomers are able to handle that. If they didn't think there's alternative to shaving him down, then 1) don't agree to the instructions and 2) call for permission before doing something that drastic. I called Happy Paws and they kept saying they were sorry for the "inconvenience." Just their choice of language is insulting. This is not a product where I'm being "inconvenienced" - we're dealing with a little living creature here. The manager at Happy Paws has been apologetic and said they are going to review what happened here with the GM. They've also offered a refund, pending that conversation. I will give them credit for immediately copping to and realizing that something bad happened - but it basically means they have at least one crappy/lazy/careless/dangerous/insensitive groomer working there and they do not have any oversight. read more

I'm going to keep this short and simple. Went in, was greeted by a guy behind the counter. I asked him how much for full grooming, and he didn't seem to know anything about what it included. I give my dog to the groomer, and they told me to come back about 3 hours later. So 3 hours later I come back and my dog (who was probably in the crate for over an hour) comes out. I immediately notice that all his nails are bloody and cut way too deep. This was months ago, and now his nails will never heal. In two of his nails there is dried blood in the inside, and it will never come out thanks to Happy Paws. I will NEVER goto this place again. Oh, I also forgot to mention they charged me nearly 100 dollars for a wash, and a light trim. What a rip off, STAY AWAY! read more

Terrible. Regular customer for 8 years. Never again. Took two dogs in for 8 days boarding on a Friday of one of the hottest weeks in August. Their ac wasn't working and none of the dogs were in the upstairs room. Alarmed, we said we didn't want to leave them like that and we asked what the situation was and they assured us the ac would be fixed and back up next day. Long story short the dogs were kept in their basement for 8 days - no ac - a fan - no exercise or natural light. We called every day and each day were told the ac would be fixed "tomorrow".Two distressed dogs with gastro and anxiety issues when picked up. We insisted on seeing the basement where they had been kept and left absolutely livid. No offer of discount when asked - had to pay for the service offered - daytime exercise in an air conditioned room - but that certainly wasn't the service provided. No apology. Nothing close to apologetic or good customer service but most of all the welfare of the dogs not it seems a priority UPDATE based on Managers response below (1) that we should have tried another route like calling - we asked to speak to the manager on the day - not available. I telephoned four times over the next ten days - each time was told he was "not available" (2) that our dogs weren't suffering anxiety - we picked the dogs up on Friday afternoon. After a weekend of vomiting we took one to the vet on Monday. His diagnosis was that she was stressed and suffering anxiety. She has been to the facility over eight years. This was her first time being anxious - direct consequence of the conditions she was kept in (3) that downstairs basement is air conditioned and spacious - my partner went downstairs to look because we were so angry.
