The best sushi in town, but the owner/chef is constantly yelling abuse at his staff (impossible to ignore as he stands at the front of the house sushi bar) and he's often closed for random reasons. Surprised to find this little authentic Japanese place in the heart of a small town like Springfield. I've lived in Japan for a while, so I know what authentic Japanese food tastes like. The host was very warm and gave us a pair of pretty decorative chopsticks as gifts. They don't accept corporate American Express was a bummer but that didn't prevent us from eating here. I have to agree with Natasha, absolutely AMAZING. I lived in Southern California for 18 years and this place beats anything I've tried there. Owner, Hiro, is a wonderful guy, more than 20 years experience making sushi. If you don't know what you want, he'll ask you questions and then offer suggestions. He suggested the "Trudy" for me. I have no idea what was in it other than maybe yellow fin, salmon, mango, jalapeno, and ??? The presentation was a work of art. I had to take photos before I dug in. The soup that was served before the sushi was also excellent, different but much better than the typical soup that you might get elsewhere, beef based I believe. It's a small place, not in the best part of town, but the interior is very clean and pleasant. Just as I was finishing the sushi, Hiro brought over a stuffed muscle that also amazing. Our favorite place for Sushi in Springfield. The only time we're disappointed is when they are closed. Most people prefer takeout since dining space is limited, but we love dining in. Egg rolls are a must for an appetizers. We have tried a lot on the menu, but the Yammay, 10.10, and Anger Management are favorites. The ramen is very good here as well. You will leave full trust me. Being from Hawaii and eating fresh, just caught fish on a daily basis, I highly recommend Hiro's Happy Sushi as your first sushi experience. Presentation alone - you can see how proud Hiro is of his craft, and once you eat it, you realize you made the right decision for dinner or lunch. I was super skeptical about sushi in Springfield since we're so far away from getting any fresh fish, but this little hole in the wall proved me wrong. It is the only place I've gotten sushi more than once. Other places have disappoint but never Happy Sushi. The only problem is the wait, but what do you expect with such a small venue yet such a high demand. The staff well compensates for it. Once we waited for a semi-big order, 3 deluxe rolls and two makis and two a la carte, for about 45 minutes but the apologetic staff delivered our order on a SUSHI BRIDGE with free cucumber salad rolls for everyone. So, we left elated and bloated. And all in all, Hiro is just a nice man. I put an order for pick up one day after work and he saw how tired and hungry I was and just tossed me a free spicy tuna hand roll. If that doesn't convince you to try this place, I don't know what will. read more

Out of all the sushi places I've been to (New York, Chicago), this hands down takes the plate. We ordered four rolls and a bowl of ramen. 1st visit here. Staff is so kind and service was quick. Ordered 3 sushi rolls. Spicy tuna, spicy salmon, and a Philly for lunch. I was pleasantly surprised that the spicy rolls were actually spicy! The only issue was that the rolls weren't wrapped tightly enough, so they were falling apart and a bit tough to get a hold of with my chopsticks. Everything tasted yummy though. Well I didn't eat here so this isn't a review of the food, but this is hardly a restaurant. There are 3 tables and it appears to be mostly a take out place. To make it worse some strange woman followed me into the restaurant from the parking lot, making conversation the whole time and wanted me to buy her some sushi. Really odd. Happy Sushi is a pleasant surprise. Let's face it, good food and Springfield Il just doesn't happen. Hiro, the owner is a joy and seems to absolutely love what he does. His rolls are pretty damn good - I was truly shocked. The only thing I will say is that the rolls aren't packed as tightly as I've had them and did not hold their shape while eating but he still does an amazing job. We had the 'Heart Attack' appetizer and our main roll was 'Fire' and let me say that it was 'on fire'! The flavor and presentation are on point. Kudos to Hiro and his authenticity. read more
